Well fleet 2025

Welcome to Wellfleet ... the pearl of Cape Cod

First inhabited by several Indian villages of the Nauset tribe, Wellfleet can trace a long history. Captain Smith voyaged here in 1614 and the pilgrims visited in 1620 before moving on. In 1763 it separated from being part of “the north district of Eastham” and incorporated as a town. In the early days, whaling ships dotted the horizons, and salt mills interrupted the landscapes. When the Fall River & Old Colony Railroad laid its tracks to Wellfleet around 1869, the industry of tourism was born and survives today. Instead of the railroad, we have the mid-Cape highway winding from one end of the Cape to the other. Instead of whaling ships, shell fishermen grace the harbor at low tide cultivating that world-renowned mollusk—the Wellfleet Oyster. We welcome you to our historic seaside village located between the sandy shores of the Atlantic Ocean and Cape Cod Bay. We invite you to walk on the miles of unspoiled beaches, browse through the shops and galleries, swim in the fresh water ponds, savor the sweetness of a Wellfleet Oyster, surf the waves of White Crest, bicycle for miles on the Rail Trail, kayak in the bay, deep sea fish the Atlantic, spot a beautiful bird at the wildlife sanctuary, visit the Historical Museum, bounce the ball around the tennis court, hike on Great Island, play a round of golf, watch shell fishermen tend to their beds, skateboard in the park, crack into a fresh lobster, experience the theater or take in a movie at the drive-in, square dance at the pier, sail into the sunset, and stay longer than the pilgrims did.

Once you have experienced the wonders of Wellfleet, you will know you have found the true gem of the Cape. Come to Wellfleet… for the beauty of it… for the fun of it.

Enjoy Cape Cod at its best!

Oil 20”x 24” by Agnes Collis

Capturing the simple beauty of life on Cape Cod, the minimal compositions of Agnes Collis depict the changing energy of the ocean and its environs. Returning to painting in 1995 after a long absence, the artist settled into oil painting as her medium. She creates shore vistas evoking childhood summers in the Highlands of New Jersey shore and decades of living in Wellfleet where her studio over looks sweeping dunes and the Atlantic Ocean. Her work can be seen at Jules Besch in Truro or at AgnesCollis.com.

Wellfleet Waters

Ocean and Bay Beaches

Towering dunes, cool surf and six miles of golden sand make the ocean beaches favorites for body and board surfing, sunbathing and beach walking. Come watch an early morning sunrise.

If you prefer warmer waters and calmer surf, the bayside beaches are for you. They are wonderful for swimming, collecting shells, or just relaxing. The vibrant hues of the sunsets at Duck Harbor are not to be missed.

Freshwater Ponds

The hidden gems of Wellfleet are the crystal clear waters of our fresh water ponds. These “kettle hole” groundwater fed ponds were formed from ice chunks left behind by the glaciers centuries ago. They are perfect for canoeing, kayaking, swimming and quiet reflection.

To preserve the beauty of these fragile ponds, for now and for the future, internal combustion engines are prohibited, as are soap, detergents, and shampoos. Pets are not allowed. Fish and animals at the ponds are fun to observe but should be left alone. Respect shoreline vegetation, which protects the pond waters. Enjoy...

The Town Clock

According to “Ripley’s Believe it or Not” the only Town clock in the world that strikes on ship’s time is located on Main Street in the steeple of the 1850’s First Congregational Church.

In 1952 with $500.00 raised by the town, Lawrence Gardinier, a town selectman and tinker shop owner, built and assembled the clock mechanism and the bells.

Bells chime on the half hour thus the half hours are struck by adding one stroke to the corresponding even hours.

“two bells” at one, five, and nine o’clock

“four bells” at two, six, and ten o’clock

“six bells” at three, seven and eleven o’clock

“eight bells” at four, eight and twelve o’clock

Thus one bell at 12:30, two bells at 1:00, three bells at 1:30, four bells at 2:00. The cycle repeats. The clock tower still ser ves as a beacon to boaters approaching the harbor today.

Mayo Beach Lighthouse

The 30 foot, cast-iron tower, erected in 1881, was the last lighthouse to be built in the harbor area. A notable distinction is that it was the first one to have a female lighthouse keeper. Rumor had it that it was destroyed in 1939. Imagine the shock and surprise when 80 years later, Colleen MacNeney along with her parents, Bob and Sandra Shanklin, discovered the lighthouse sitting 3,000 miles away at point Montara, just south of San Francisco. The reason is not clear why a lighthouse would have been moved so far, but it had been transferred from excess stock from one Coast Guard district to another. The lighthouse keeper’s house still stands in its original location on Kendrick Avenue and remains a popular subject for artists.

Cultural events occur throughout the summer season including musical performances, art demonstrations and lectures. The area hosts multiple live performance theaters for adults and children.

Most galleries are open daily from mid-May to mid-October. Some are open year round. Pick up a Gallery and Restaurant Walking Map and a theater schedule from any of the galleries, lodgings or restaurants.

Wellfleet’s Oyster Shacks

Located next to the Anchor Memorial, this 8’ by 10’ cedar shingled building, circa 1935, was one of the many that centered around the Duck Creek railroad bridge when oysters were regularly sent to Boston and New York City by train. The shack now located at Mayo Beach belonged to Earl Rich.

Shellfishing is an important part of the Wellfleet economy.

Shellfishing and Shellfish farming on grants take place in specific areas throughout the harbor. Aquaculture areas are marked with floating yellow buoys at each corner. White floats with red stripes and a red diamond mark underwater fishing gear. Please check with the Harbormaster's Office at the pier for rules and regulations concerning all water recreation.

What makes Wellfleet Oysters special?

The salinity in Wellfleet Harbor is relatively higher than the more brackish estuaries. Wellfleet waters have significant tides, averaging 10 to 12 feet. This means a high volume of fresh, plankton rich ocean water washes swiftly through and feeds the oyster beds twice a day. These variations greatly contribute to "Wellfleets" distinctive balanced flavor of creamy sweetness and brine. Enjoy our best!

THE CAPE COD BIKE TRAIL

The Trail itself extends from the Route 134 trailhead to LeCount Hollow Road in South Wellfleet. The name stems from the old railroad right of way it follows, which used to transport passengers and freight to Cape Cod in the early 1800’s until around 1960. The route passes by many local points of interest and several lakes suitable for swimming and picnics, including Nickerson State Park in Brewster. Continuously monitored by local police bike patrols, the Cape Cod Rail Trail is a safe and enjoyable way to spend a Cape Cod summer day. Bicycle and rollerblade rentals are also available at various bike shops conveniently located along the trail in Dennis, Brewster, Orleans and Wellfleet. Parking areas at different starting points.

Wellfleet’s “Fruits of the Sea”

Savor that one-of-a-kind experience as a cooled freshly-shucked Wellfleet oyster hits your palette with a sweet and briny sensation. Mussels, with their deep blue-black shells, are steamed with garlic and fresh herbs. Littleneck and cherrystone clams are commonly served on the half shell. Quahogs are served as stuffed clams or used in chowders. Soft-shelled, longnecked clams are best known as “steamers” for the way they are prepared. Sweet, rich sea scallops are available year round while the smaller bay scallop is harvested in the fall. While in Wellfleet, you must sit down in front of a steaming lobster full of luscious meat. All you need is butter and a bib! Be sure to enjoy all of our “fruits of the sea.”

Fishing in Wellfleet

Whether you are surfcasting at the ocean, line casting from a boat, or fresh water fishing in our glacier ponds, the sport of fishing on the waters of Wellfleet remains a draw to anglers from all over the world. Please refer to our listings for members dedicated to making your fishing experience the best. For information on fees and/or licenses: mass.gov/dfwele/dfw.

For over forty years we have been serving seafood so fresh any fisherman would approve. Indulge in our world-famous onion rings, legendary fried clams, one of our fresh salads or one of our heart-healthy baked seafood dinners. The Changing Tides of Wellfleet

The tide is the alternate rising and falling of the surface of the ocean and of connected water bodies. High tide is when the water is at its greatest elevation. Low tide is when the ebb is at its furthest point. Tides are caused by the gravitational attraction of the sun and moon occurring unequally on different parts of the earth. The tide changes every six hours.

In Wellfleet, the average difference between high and low tide is 10 feet. If you are a boater, this is important information as the boat ramp is closed for one hour on either side of Mean Low Tide. When the tide is high enough, the bridge going out to Lieutenant’s Island will be covered and impassable. At low tide on the bay side, you can watch the shell fishermen working their beds of oysters and clams. By Keith Scott

Uncle Tim’s Bridge

Constructed in 1844 the wooden footbridge, known then as “the bridge over Duck Creek” served as a shortcut into town. At the time, Timothy Daniels, referring to himself as “Uncle Tim,” lived at the bottom of Whit’s Lane. Being quite a self-promoting character, he was a fisherman, seaman, merchant, tour guide, and the “go to” man in town. He died in 1893, but somehow his name lives on.

In the late 1940s, people started calling the bridge, “Uncle Tim’s Bridge.” So why fifty years after the death of this colorful, but undistinguished individual the bridge took on his name remains an historical mystery.

Replicating its original look, the bridge was reconstructed in 2008 and remains the most photographed scene in Wellfleet. Take a stroll over the bridge to Hamblen Park, Wellfleet’s first public park. Marked trails lead to the top of the hill where you can enjoy a great view of the harbor. As you explore, please be respectful of the private shoreline outside of the park. By Donna
