Owned and operated by Riverview School, a local boarding and day school for students with complex language and learning challenges, also located in East Sandwich, this café and thrift store give the unique opportunity to eat, sip, shop, and give back to a growing educational community all in one visit.

Café Riverview’s menu offers a variety of delicious options, including breakfast, specialty coffee drinks, freshly baked pastries, and a lunch menu centered around their signature sandwiches, salads, and quinoa bowls. What truly makes Café Riverview and Second-View Thrift store exceptional is that behind the scenes, Riverview School is providing the opportunity for enriching vocational and educational experiences within these enterprises.

Riverview, a school focused on empowering students with complex learning challenges, revolves its curriculum around strong academic support in combination with independent living skills and social development. Riverview consists of a middle and high school, as well as a 3-year postgraduate transition program called GROW

(Getting Ready for the Outside World).

As soon as students arrive on campus, they are encouraged to embrace self-advocacy and celebrate what makes them unique.

Vocational readiness becomes a priority starting in high school, as Riverview helps match seniors with local businesses for internships and teaches the foundations of managing the workplace environment. After high school, many students go on to attend GROW, which focuses even more heavily on independent living and professional opportunities.

Café Riverview provides invaluable experience by giving Riverview students the chance to work in the hospitality industry, acting like a hands-on classroom located right down the road from their campus. Students immerse themselves in the art of food service, mastering every aspect of restaurant operations. From

crafting beverages to providing impeccable service, they gain invaluable vocational skills.

Meanwhile, at Second-View Thrift, students delve into the world of retail and customer service, learning the nuances of inventory management and customer relations. They learn the value of the day-to-day upkeep and gain familiarity with the hustle and bustle of a retail environment.

To socialize and get the buzz of what’s happening in town I head to Main Street and pop into the Sandwich Arts Alliance to see the new exhibit and poke in the gift shop - next stop Jarves and Main to pick up something special for my clients or friends (or myself) around the corner to Collections to scout out a great handmade treasure - then a stop at Beth's Bakery & Cafe for a coffee break and then back home with a stop at the Brown Jug to pick up a delicious sandwich and a stop at the library to rest a bit. PS: On a day that I hear the beach calling me I’ll skip the shops and head to the Sandwich Boardwalk instead to refresh my soul with cool ocean breezes and sand in my toes. I am always inspired by walking lovely Water, Grove and Main Streets, and their adjoining side streets, taking in the rich architectural tapestry of our village.

From 17th century early-American to 20th century Greek revival structures, Sandwich Village is entirely unique as it offers vistas of each architectural era in America. Within a 15 minute walk, one can visit a working 17th century Dexter Gristmill, admire handsome Greek Doric columns of the old Town Hall, stroll past several different styles of polychrome Victorians, or delight in the perfectly proportioned entryways of early and mid-18th century cottages — all beautifully scaled and set within a charming framework of grand trees and gardens or against the peaceful backdrop of Shawme Pond. On a day off, there’s nothing better than heading out with our family to Sandy Neck ORV—it’s our happy place. When it’s not a beach day, we like to swing by the Sandwich Co-Op for a little shopping, grab a Hillport Burger at Off the Grid, and treat ourselves to something sweet at The Sweetish Fish candy truck. The kids love to end their day with ice cream from Shipwrecked or Twin Acres. And for dinner dates, my husband and I love Fishermen’s View or sipping drinks at the outdoor bar at The Pilot House. It’s a plus when there is live music at both locations!

Sandwich Glass Museum

With 10,000 pieces of Sandwich glass, daily glassblowing demonstrations and exhibitions, no trip to Sandwich would be complete without a visit to this extraordinary museum. In the heart of Sandwich's Glass Town Cultural District, this fascinating museum features a stunning Museum Store offering locally made glass objects, jewelry and more. The Sandwich Glass Museum and Historical Society interprets the history of the town of Sandwich, and its role in ushering in the Industrial Revolution to this once agricultural and fishing village. Sparked by the building of the Boston and Sandwich Glass Company in 1825, the company grew to be one of the world's largest glass manufacturers, leaving an indelible mark on the face of Sandwich which remains today as glass studios dot Cape Cod, including some in Sandwich, and beyond.

David Rogers' Big Bugs (Sept 1 - May 31) returns for the first time since 2014!

Massive insects constructed from forest material will take over the Heritage grounds, offering visitors a chance to connect with the minuscule world of bugs on a massive scale.

From Carriage to Classic: How Automobiles Transformed America (May - Oct 19) discovers the origin story of the American automobile through 27 cars from Heritage's collection. Come along for a ride from the late 1800s to the 1960s as the car evolves from a horseless carriage to a streamlined symbol of freedom and independence.

Nye Museum

Dexter Grist Mill

No visit to Cape Cod is complete without experiencing the Dexter Grist Mill, arguably the most photographed landmark on the Cape. Positioned majestically overlooking Lower Shawme Pond, this historic mill creates a postcard-perfect scene surrounded by the Town Hall, the active herring run, charming colonial residences, and an ancient cemetery where gravestones tell stories dating back to the 1600s.

What makes this mill truly special is its original machinery—the earliest type used in America, still powered by the natural flow of water from Shawme Pond. Cape Cod Canal Visitor Center The Cape Cod Canal Visitor Center transforms learning into adventure for visitors of every age. Dexter Grist Mill

This scenic 2.8-mile loop, clearly marked with signs and sharrows, connects the Cape Cod Canal to historic Sandwich village center.

The Route: Begin at the eastern terminus of the canal path near Sandwich Marina. Follow Freezer

Road, then turn right onto Tupper Road. Exercise caution when turning left at the traffic

light onto Route 6A, then make your next right onto Jarves Street toward the village heart.

(For a scenic detour, turn left to visit the town's famous Boardwalk instead.)

The marked route continues right from Jarves Street onto Main Street. Before following

the official route left onto River Street, consider extending to the end of Main Street where you'll discover a charming park featuring bike racks, seasonal restrooms, and benches.

Across the street via crosswalk, you can explore Sandwich Town Hall, the historic grist mill, and an artesian well perfect for refilling water bottles.

Dining & Amenities:

Multiple eateries throughout the village offer perfect rest stops. Bike racks are

strategically placed at beaches, public buildings, parks, and the Sandwich Welcome Center on Route 130, with additional racks added annually.

Beyond the Village Loop:

Mountain biking enthusiasts should explore Shawme-Crowell State Forest and the single-track trails between Oak Ridge School and Corpus Christi Parish off Quaker

Meetinghouse Road. These trails connect to Maple Swamp Conservation Area (parking on Service Road between Mill Road and Noel Henry Drive), creating nearly 50 miles of

trails highlighted by a panoramic lookout platform atop Nye Mountain with Cape Cod Bay views.

BMX riders can enjoy the Cape Cod BMX track off Quaker Meetinghouse Road between Cotuit Road and Route 130.

Future Connections: Sandwich's Bikeway & Pedestrian Committee is developing a designated route linking the village to an upcoming multi-use path along Service Road, which will eventually connect to the Cape Cod Rail Trail. Their 2018 master plan focuses on creating safer
