For over 30 years, Willowbend has been widely recognized as Cape Cod’s premier private club and luxury lifestyle enclave. Ours is a family-friendly community where the emphasis is on good times, good friends, and celebrating life together. Whether you’re looking for a club that offers the very best of everything, or a special place to create your Cape Cod dream home, we invite you to discover Willowbend.
As I step into my role as the new Executive Director of the Mashpee Chamber of Commerce, I’m excited about what lies ahead. This year marks the 40th anniversary of the Chamber’s incorporation in September 1985, so it’s a time to reflect on our story while looking forward to our future.
Our story begins with the original people of this land, the Wampanoag Tribe, whose deep-rooted traditions and community still resonate throughout Mashpee. We look forward to the 104th Mashpee Wampanoag Powwow — Connecting the Generations on July 4-6.
The Chamber and the Mashpee community remain steadfast in their commitment to progress and unity. Our businesses are building on a timeless and forward-thinking legacy. We’re dedicated to fostering a healthier community by proudly supporting the Mashpee Farmers Market. This platform provides economic opportunity for area farmers, makers, and microbusinesses. It serves as a launchpad for fresh ideas, a community meeting place, and a springboard for the future of small businesses in our Town.
This year, we have introduced “Lunch and Learn,” a series of interactive workshops and seminars designed to bolster business skills and knowledge. We’ve also welcomed new members from neighboring towns and added an entrepreneur membership that offers exclusive benefits and resources that will bring fresh ideas and energy to Mashpee. We’re launching our first-ever Mashpee Restaurant Week from June 8–15, and we encourage everyone to dine out and explore the flavors of Mashpee.
Year-rounders and visitors know that with nearly 50% of our land in protected status, Mashpee has the second-largest accessible open space on Cape Cod, and Mashpee Commons was the second most visited place on Cape Cod in the summer of 2024, just behind the National Seashore according to Zartico Geolocation Data. USA Today also ranked us fourth on the list of the Best Small Towns in the Northeast. From award-winning ice cream to Cape Cod’s favorite lobster rolls, there’s no shortage of local flavor in our Town. The Chamber remains steadfast in its commitment to serving our visitors, people, and businesses with support and connection.
As we honor our past and set our sights on the future, please join us in writing the next chapter of Mashpee’s story. Please mark your calendars to attend our 40th Birthday Cookout, which will be held this September.
I am grateful for your continued support and involvement in our community. Thank you for being a part of Mashpee, whether you are a visitor, resident, or business owner. Here’s to another 40 years of growth and prosperity.
Stephanie Viva, Executive Director
Infinite Mashpee: A Deep, Enduring Legacy
BY RODNEY C. COLLINS, Town Manager
At first glance, describing Mashpee as “infinite” might seem like an overstatement, but Mashpee’s infinite spirit can be experienced in countless ways and its rich history underscores a deep, enduring legacy.
Mashpee’s roots trace back to the Wampanoag people, who have called Cape Cod their home for thousands of years, long before English colonists settled here in the mid-17th century. These early beginnings were modest but steeped in sacred tradition and a profound connection to nature. To explore this history, one can visit the Mashpee Wampanoag Museum, the Tribal Government Center, or the Mashpee Archives, where the Town’s story unfolds through the lives of its first inhabitants.
Mashpee thrives as a community largely because of its emphasis on services, programs, activities and events that offer something for everyone.
Today, Mashpee remains tied to its natural surroundings. Its allure still springs from the enduring connection between its inhabitants and the natural world. Its coastal ecosystems not only sustain an array of native plants species and wildlife, but also inspire residents to live sustainably. Mashpee’s open space certainly feels boundless, and opportunities for outdoor activities — swimming, kayaking, boating, fishing, and more — are endless. While Mashpee’s woodlands, beaches and neighborhoods still define its charm, its appeal continues to grow through tourism, commerce and recreation, drawing people near and far to be part of its story. Whether you are seeking a boater’s paradise, a quiet escape or an active lifestyle, Mashpee truly embodies a spirit of adventure and opportunity.
The Mashpee Recreation Department, widely regarded as the gold standard on Cape Cod, plays a pivotal role in enriching family and community life. Their mission is consistently carried out with vision and

enthusiasm. In 2025, events like the Super Swim, Community Picnic and Fireworks, and Oktoberfest are on the calendar. Additionally, new offerings this year include First Aid/CPR Training, a Home Alone Kids Safety Course, and a Boating Safety Course. Among these programs, “You Go Girl”, now in its third year, continues to stand out. Designed for girls aged 8-13, this initiative focuses on building confidence, life skills and self-awareness. Recently, it was nominated for a Community Impact Award by the Massachusetts Recreation and Parks Association. Mashpee is privileged to have a Recreation Department that is committed to building relationships that strengthen the fabric of this community.
Mashpee’s Annual Seasons of Illumination, organized by the Chamber of Commerce, is a highly-anticipated tradition that brings the Town together in an impressive display of lights, costumes and music. Each year, Mashpee Commons is transformed into a winter wonderland, featuring a holiday parade, creative floats and a magical atmosphere. We are proud to support the Chamber, and to work alongside local businesses to help bring these festivities to life.
Mashpee’s blend of natural beauty, rich history, vibrant culture, and community-focused lifestyle are a rare combination that captivates all who experience it. From time-honored traditions to innovative programs, there’s an infinite cycle of growth and connection here, and I am proud to join my fellow citizens in celebrating Infinite Mashpee. I look forward to the future where we can continue to collaborate together in a positive and productive way for the betterment of the entire Mashpee community.

A Renewed Landmark: The Mashpee Wampanoag Indian Museum
BY DAVID WEEDEN, Director and THPO Mashpee Wampanoag Historic Preservation Department
Nestled in the heart of our beloved Mashpee at 414 Main Street, the Mashpee Wampanoag Indian Museum stands as a living tribute to over 11,000 years of tribal history. This 232-year-old National Register-listed property recently received a significant facelift, thanks to the expert restoration work completed in April 2025 by local contractor and historic specialist, C.H. Newton. With new windows and fresh finishes, the museum now boasts a vibrant exterior that matches the rich cultural treasures held within.
Visitors can explore artifacts, collections and exhibits like our “400 Years Ago” exhibit, and experience what life was like long ago by entering our full-scale wety8 (wigwam); all showcasing the resilience and traditions of our Mashpee Wampanoag people. The museum is open seasonally in 2025 from April 14 through December 12 on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10:00am to 4:00pm. Admission is $15 for adults and $10 for children, seniors, and groups of three or more. For more information or to schedule a group visit, call (508) 477-9339 or contact the Tribal Historic Preservation Department at (508) 477-0208 ext. 101. Come experience Mashpee’s unique history told by the original People who have always called this land home since time immemorial.
Please join us for the 104th Mashpee Wampanoag Powwow. The Mashpee Wampanoag Powwow will be held on July 4th, 5th and 6th 2025 on our Tribal Reservation Lands at 483 Great Neck Road-South in Mashpee.
Over the course of our 3-day event, we invite you to come share our Culture, Traditions, Foods and Crafts. We welcome you to witness first hand Native American dancing, music, storytelling and more. We will host Indigenous craft vendors and a variety of Mashpee Wampanoag food vendors offering that delicious and unique Taste of Mashpee!
Children’s Museum & Discovery Center
There has never been a better time to visit Cape Cod Children’s Museum & Discovery Center with multiple new exhibits designed especially with the older child in mind. Not just for rainy days anymore, our partnership with Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, the creation of our STEAM Room for ages 6+ and the opening of our “Farm to Table” exhibit in 2025 are just the tip of the iceberg of new and exciting options at the museum.
Summer 2025 will also feature our first traveling exhibit — Take Care with Peanuts — curated by the Charles Schulz Museum and celebrating Peanuts 75th Anniversary! Tickets to the exhibit include museum admission and are a fantastic opportunity for Snoopy fans young and old to see original comics, learn about Charles Schulz, visit Snoopy’s doghouse and Lucy’s Psychiatrist Booth as well as multiple crafts, games, cartooning and much more.
Cape Cod Children’s Museum & Discovery Center has also embarked on a capital campaign to celebrate our 35th anniversary! Visit our website to see the renderings of the incredible additions planned for our museum. Phase I construction has begun, and we look forward to working with you to raise the funds “For the Next 35 Years.”
Historic One-Room Schoolhouse
Where is Cape Cod’s Smallest Historic One-Room Schoolhouse? It is in Mashpee! Mashpee’s historical gem sits in the heart of Mashpee Center across from Town Hall at the intersection of Route 130 and Great Neck Road North and is open to the public, free of charge, every Tuesday from 11:00am – 2:00pm from Memorial Day until Indigenous People Day in October. It is the 1831 One-Room Schoolhouse. Come take a tour, learn about Mashpee history, see some of the early educational artifacts, take part in an 1850 classroom and write with your quill and ink pen and on your slate board.
Originally located in South Mashpee, the historic dwelling served as a schoolhouse until 1901, as a chapel (Ockway Chapel), library and the location of important pieces of Wampanoag history with the preaching of Blind Joe Amos and William Apess. It was also the site where the Mashpee Wampanoags signed what amounted to a Declaration of Independence. They wrote “all men are born free and equal” and declared that they would act against further encroachment by white settlers; 102 Wampanoag women and men, signed that Declaration of Independence in the schoolhouse, which later led to some basic rights for the Wampanoags to govern themselves.
Each Tuesday throughout the summer, the schoolmaster will welcome you to tour through this important piece of Mashpee history. So, come and visit and go back to school in early Mashpee. Those unable to make the Tuesday openings can instead schedule a tour on another day by contacting schoolmaster DeSorgher at Richard.desorgher@gmail.com or by calling (508) 314-2605 to work out a time for a tour.
New this year, on every Monday, will be a one-hour guided walking tour of Community Park, that will include the Archives Building, the war memorials, Veterans’ Garden, the 1831 One-Room Schoolhouse and a look back at the history of Mashpee Center. Tours will begin at the Archives building every hour with tours at 11:00am, 12 noon and 1:00pm. Come learn about Mashpee’s rich history through the artifacts, maps and displays inside the Archives, learn about Mashpee’s role in our different wars, honor those who paid the ultimate sacrifice and go back in time with a tour of the historic Mashpee One-Room Schoolhouse.

A Culinary History: Remembering Mashpee Restaurants
BY DINO MITROKOSTAS, Self-Proclaimed Mashpee Restaurant Historian
Since 1985… give or take a few foggy memories before then. As one of Mashpee’s longest-operating restaurant owners — second only to the legendary Bobby Byrne — I figured it was time to put pen to paper before I forget it all. As the Chamber’s most enduring active member and someone who’s spent decades feeding this town, I feel responsible for documenting our culinary history — at least from the moment I rolled into town.
I first came to Mashpee in the mid-1980s, just after the tribal land suits were settled. Some friends encouraged me to check the place out. My family had been slinging pizza since 1962, and we’d already put down roots on the Cape by 1970, so opening a shop in Mashpee felt like a natural move.
Before I officially arrived, my only memory of Mashpee — aside from not knowing it was even a town — was from the late ‘70s. Back then, it had a reputation for late-night drinks. After the Hyannis bars closed, we’d speed to Mashpee to catch the last call. I still remember places like The Farm, On the Rocks, and Bobby Byrne’s.
When I told my father I wanted to take over the family restaurant, he kicked me out — with a Greek send-off roughly saying, “There’s nothing in Mashpee but trees and indians.” So naturally, I opened Finally Dino’s Pizza on September 12, 1990. It was a tribute and a rebellion rolled into one — my way, not his. Since then, I’ve seen fires, rebrands, comebacks, and closures. Here’s a stroll through Mashpee’s restaurant past, as I remember it:
The Classics and the Lost Legends:
• The Farm (John Cahalane) became Cherrystones (Jimmy Kogut) before a fire took place in 2007.
• On The Rocks became Pickwicks, then Sailors — also lost to fire.
• Ratoli’s became Cefalo’s, which moved from the Commons to Rte. 130.
• Carbo’s and Michael’s Italian (now Bangkok Thai) gave way to Sopranos
• A string of names rotated through the Bagel Haven plaza: Subway, Atlantic Seafood, Coneheads Ice Cream, Chopstix, and finally, Great Wall.
Popponesset Marketplace Icons:
• Piz’ A Poppy, Dino’s Pizza, The Raw Bar, Vito’s, Marketplace Café, espresso from yours truly, New Seabury Café, and Ben & Jerry’s.
• The Popponesset Inn (Bill & Linda Zammer) was built in 1940, and New Seabury Country Club was founded in 1964.
• The Beach Tent (1963) served burgers on the Spit.
• The Lure, formerly the Beach Club, got its name in 2012.
• Don’t forget Jonas Snack Bar at South Cape Beach — destroyed in the hurricane of ‘54.
Dino Mitrokostas making pizza.
A Culinary History: Remembering Mashpee Restaurants
At the Rotary and Beyond:
• The Flume (now Naukabout), where I met the excellent Earl Mills.
• The Hotel Attaquin has existed since 1955.
• Blanche Pocknet Dean’s Tea Shop became Moffitt’s B&B (1948).
• Ma Glockner’s, forever in memory.
• Cape Cod Coffee traces back to roasting legend Demos Young.
• The Wigwam morphed into River Bend, then Richard’s Pub, later Zachary’s — home to the infamous “Cape Cod Ballet.”
Mashpee Commons Era:
• Carol’s Breakfast spot became Starbucks.
• Market Street Pizza went to Evans, then Zoe’s.
• The Tea Shoppe to Estia.
• Hot Tomatoes turned Gone Tomatoes turned just Tomatoes, then Siena, Trevi Café, and Bleu.
• Asia, Panera, Burrito Bistro, The Lane’s (formerly Angelo’s Supermarket).
Other Notables:
• Pizza Prima became Castaway’s.
• Pizza Guyz had many lives before becoming Fresh Roll.
• O’Neil’s (now breakfast) was once Laura’s Home Cooking, then Jimmy’s BLT.
• Pickle Deli was once in a former hardware store.
• Cormier’s Gas Station dabbled in food — now home to WildFire Pizza
• Wendy’s sits where Honey Dew Donuts once served.
• Saga Hibachi/Sushi is the latest concept in a space that has hosted Wicked Pizza, Sailors, and Heather’s (from Regatta).
Through it all, these places weren’t just where we ate — they were where we laughed, cried, met new friends and built our community.
Sure, I missed a few. But from sleepy backroads to bustling plazas, Mashpee’s food scene has always had flavor — and it’s been a wild, delicious ride.

Protecting Our Waters
BY ASHLEY K. FISHER, Water Quaity Coordinator/Grant Writer
The Town of Mashpee is leading a broad and sustained effort to protect and restore its water resources through infrastructure investment, watershed management, and collaborative conservation. While sewer expansion is a central element of the Town’s clean water strategy, ongoing initiatives extend well beyond traditional wastewater infrastructure.
To address nitrogen pollution from the widespread use of on-site septic systems, the Town adopted the Comprehensive Wastewater Management Plan (CWMP) in 2015. This phased plan outlines the transition from individual septic systems to a centralized wastewater collection and treatment system. Phase 1, including construction of the Water Resource Recovery Facility (WRRF), is now operational. Phase 1A is progressing, and design and permitting for Phase 2 are underway.
Beyond sewer infrastructure, the Town is advancing several major water quality restoration efforts. At Ashumet Pond, a nutrient inactivation treatment is planned in coordination with state and federal agencies to address internal phosphorus loading and reduce harmful algal blooms. At Santuit Pond, the Town received approximately $1.7 million through a Massachusetts Municipal Vulnerability Preparedness (MVP) grant to implement nature-based stormwater improvements and ecological restoration in partnership with the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe. This year, restoration of the adjacent Chop Chaque cranberry bog will return the site to a functioning freshwater wetland system.
At Mashpee-Wakeby Pond, nutrient intervention strategies are supported by long-term monitoring of phosphorus, cyanobacteria, and freshwater dynamics, in partnership with the Association to Preserve Cape Cod (APCC), the Cape Cod Commission, and UMass Dartmouth.
The Town also secured over $10 million in federal funding from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to restore the Mashpee River, Quashnet River, and Red Brook. These projects, conducted with the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe, APCC, and the Waquoit Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, focusing on fish passage, habitat restoration, and overall ecosystem health.
Mashpee’s Shellfish Program remains a vital component of the CWMP, providing in-system nitrogen removal through the deployment of oysters and quahogs, which act as natural polishing agents in nutrient-rich estuaries. The Nature Conservancy is currently supporting the development of an oyster reef restoration project in Hamblin Pond, a sub-embayment of Waquoit Bay.
Through strategic planning, strong partnerships, and sustained investment, the Town remains deeply committed to preserving the health and resilience of its ponds, rivers, and estuaries for generations to come.
The EDIC’s Mission
To advocate sound growth policy and to stimulate sustainable economic opportunities that will enhance the quality of life within the Mashpee community.
In the past, the EDIC has sponsored job fairs, surveyed businesses on their challenges and concerns, and made efforts to address the housing crisis.
In 2025, the EDIC is committed to supporting local businesses by engaging with business owners to understand their experiences in Mashpee, the challenges they encounter, and their concerns. The EDIC invites all Mashpee business owners to join the Committee in these important discussions.
The EDIC is also seeking new members. If you live in Mashpee and own a business here, please consider joining us. If the EDIC isn’t for you, there are many town committees that need members. Our Town needs the energy and involvement of the people. Join us in making Mashpee a place to be proud of.

Growing Roots: My Senior Year Experience
BY RACHEL BLACKBURN, Graduating Senior at Mashpee High School
Having lived in Mashpee for my entire life, one of my favorite things about this place is the strong sense of community we have here. Not only in the school system, but even outside of it.
Throughout my years and especially now, I’ve met various kind and supportive community members. At Mashpee Middle High School in particular, I was supported in both academic and even non academic ways. All my teachers, guidance counselors, and admin helped me accomplish all that I have today. While at Kenneth C. Combs School, one of my teachers encouraged me to start my own dance club for kids, and it has been running for the past 3 years thanks to her help and that of many others. Additionally, Mashpee Middle High School has so many clubs, courses, and extracurricular offerings, that I never felt as though I was behind or lacking opportunity. Specifically, the school-tocareer program here, in which I participated in this year, has enabled me to have some truly unique opportunities. Thanks to Mr. Looney, the head of the program, I was able to land an internship at the Mashpee Chamber of Commerce.
Although I’ve only been with the Chamber for a few months, I’ve already gained valuable experience. I’ve connected with Mashpee business owners and community members, explored marketing as a career, and contributed to social media campaigns and events. I’ve also developed communication and technical skills that will benefit both my professional and personal life.
Overall, my high school experience, especially my senior year and working at the Mashpee Chamber of Commerce, has been one that’s felt supported, inspiring, and broadening. I look forward to taking what I have learned and using it in the future. Next year, I plan to go to college and major in marketing with a minor in dance. After college, I hope to come back to Cape Cod — Mashpee in particular — and be able to build a life in a community that I know is supportive in all aspects of life.

SCORE Empowers Small Businesses Through Mentorship & Education
BY MARC L. GOLDBERG, Certified Mentor - Outreach Marketing, SCORE Cape Cod & the Island
Starting and growing a small business can be challenging especially in a seasonal environment like Cape Cod, but SCORE, a nonprofit organization, provides invaluable support to entrepreneurs through mentorship and educational resources. As a resource partner of the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), SCORE helps small business owners overcome obstacles, develop strategies, and achieve success through the various life cycles of an enterprise.
Personalized Business Mentorship
One of SCORE’s key services is its free, one-on-one mentorship program, connecting entrepreneurs with experienced business professionals as was done with Cape Cod Nail Co. These mentors — many of whom are successful business owners or industry experts — offer personalized guidance on topics like business planning, marketing, financial management, and operations. Whether a business is in its early stages or looking to scale, SCORE mentors provide actionable insights and strategic advice, helping entrepreneurs make informed decisions.
Workshops & Webinars for Business Growth
In addition to mentorship, SCORE offers educational workshops and webinars that cover a wide range of business topics. These sessions — available online and in-person — help entrepreneurs develop essential skills, stay updated on industry trends, and access valuable resources. Topics include Business Planning using the Business Model Canvas, funding strategies, digital marketing, cash management, financial forecasting, and leadership development.
“Entrepreneurs
who leverage SCORE’s resources are better equipped to build sustainable, successful businesses that contribute to the economy and local communities.”
Building a Community of Entrepreneurs
Beyond mentorship and education, SCORE fosters a supportive network, enabling entrepreneurs to connect with peers, industry professionals, and business advisors. This sense of community encourages collaboration, inspiration, and innovation. Through mentorship and education, SCORE continues to empower small businesses, helping them navigate challenges and thrive in competitive markets. Entrepreneurs who leverage SCORE’s resources are better equipped to build sustainable, successful businesses that contribute to the economy and local communities.
