WELCOME TO EASTHAM, GATEWAY TO THE CAPE COD NATIONAL SEASHORE
Welcome to the Outer Cape where our rural village community will provide a seamless link between our unique attractions and all your needs throughout your visit. As you enjoy our long sandy ocean and bay beaches, miles of hiking and biking trails, shopping delights, dining for all tastes, and lodging accommodations to your style and expectations, we are confident your stay will be a treasured memory.
Eastham is the gateway to the Cape Cod National Seashore. The Seashore offers miles of unspoiled shoreline and beaches, with marshlands and forests for your swimming and hiking pleasure. After a visit to the Eastham Visitor Information Booth, the salt Pond Visitor Center will be one of the first stops you’ll want to make. The Salt Pond Visitor Center will give you a listing of the many activities, events, concerts and ranger-guided programs. These offerings include options for families, seniors, and persons with disabilities.
Eastham is found on the Outer Cape, isolated from the commercial and suburban, yet a short drive to Hyannis Port, the Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket ferry service, whale watches and hundreds of other Cape Cod attractions.
Home to Cape Cod's oldest working windmill, built in the 1680s, along with several historic buildings, sites, museums and districts, Eastham is proud of its many National Register of Historic Places designations. Also listed in the Massachusetts Historic Register are: the Old Town Center Historic District, Bridge Road Cemetery, and Cove Burying Ground, protecting our lineage.
Experience Eastham's hospitality as you dine on local seafood, rent bikes for an outing, visit specialty shops, play on the beaches, and absorb thousands of years of Americana starting with the Nauset tribe of the Wampanoag Nation.

ABOUT EASTHAM
EASTHAM - THEN AND NOW
Situated on the Outer Cape, Eastham is Nature’s quintessential paradise. Originally called Nauset, Eastham is a narrow strip of rural country with marshes, ponds, bogs, and forests unharmed by time. Bordered on the east with miles of the majestic Atlantic Ocean, and on its west, by Cape Cod Bay, Eastham is a natural treasure.
First Encounter Beach in Eastham is the site of the first meeting between the Pilgrims and the native Nauset Indians in 1620. To learn more about this “first encounter” you may visit the Eastham 400 Commemoration’s webpage, eastham400.org. Descendants of the Mayflower settlers still live in the area. Three original passengers are buried in the Cove Burying Ground.
Today Eastham is best-known Cape-wide and around the world for its spectacular beaches and sprawling conservation areas. As the Gateway to the Cape Cod National Seashore, both residents and visitors can revel in a land with little change. Discover windmills, museums, and salt air breezes in the classic Cape Cod village known as Eastham.

ABOUT EASTHAM
CAPE COD NATIONAL SEASHORE
The Cape Cod National Seashore is the crown jewel among our National Parks system. President John F. Kennedy signed a bill on August 7, 1961, reserving 44,000 acres of pristine seashore and uplands for perpetuity. Eastham is the gateway—literally the starting point—for these 40 miles of undeveloped Atlantic coastline.
Extending from Chatham to Provincetown, Cape Cod National Seashore encompasses many habitats that invite exploration, such as, beach, dune, salt marsh, freshwater pond and upland forest. There are also many human stories to discover – shipwrecks and lifesaving, whaling, wireless communication and early tourism. We invite you to discover your own personal connection, to create memories and partner with us in preserving this special place.
Get your bearings by starting at the Salt Pond Visitor Center. In addition to clean restrooms and helpful rangers, there are orientation exhibits, a museum focused on the Outer Cape’s human stories, an auditorium with regular showings of park movies and a well-stocked book and gift store. All types of family exploration activities, and trails, including the Buttonbush Trail, designed for the blind, take off from the Visitor Center.

MUSEUMS & HISTORIC SITES
EASTHAM WINDMILL, (17) Stop and see an actual working windmill. Located on Windmill Green across from Town Hall, this piece of Eastham history is one of the few remaining windmills on Cape Cod. An early colonial artifact, the windmill operated for over twohundred years (until 1896) as a vital economic resource. The mill was built around 1680 in Plymouth Colony by Thomas Paine and shortly before the Revolution he moved the mill across Cape Cod Bay to Truro. In 1793, a prominent Eastham resident, Seth Knowles bought the mill and moved it to Eastham overlooking Salt Pond. It was moved once more to its present spot on Windmill Green, in 1808. The windmill operated until the turn of the century. Recognized for its American historical significance, it was sold to the Village Improvement Society where it served as a library. In 1936, the now Town owned mill underwent extensive refurbishment and has been open to the public ever since. July & August, Monday – Saturday 10am – 5pm, Sunday 1 – 5pm. NRHP*
OLD SCHOOLHOUSE MUSEUM (12) (opposite the Salt Pond Visitor Center on
Nauset Road) is a post Civil War one-room school house which served Eastham for over 70 years. Built in 1869, this historic schoolhouse displays various objects from the town’s history including everything from daily life to a Life Saving Service for shipwrecks that commonly occurred just miles off Nauset beach. www.easthamhistoricalsociety.org NRHP*
PENNIMAN HOUSE, (23) (on Governor Prence Road at Fort Hill) was built by Captain Edward Penniman. The house was constructed in 1868, in the Second Empire style, making it a favorite of both architectural and history buffs. As one of the most resplendent sea captain’s homes on the Cape, it denotes the once profitable whaling industry. Open seasonally, contact the Salt Pond Visitor Center. (508) 255-3421 NRHP*
SWIFT-DALEY HOUSE MUSEUM (18) is located on Route 6 next to the Post Office. Built in 1741, its bowed roof is typical of early houses built by ships’ carpenters, with wide board floors, deep kitchen fireplace and narrow stairways. Completely furnished, its collection

THREE SISTERS OF NAUSET
LIGHTHOUSES (2) The Nauset Beach Light Station was established in 1838 with three small brick towers. In 1892, as the Atlantic was about to claim the brick towers, three new towers of wood were commissioned. In 1911, two were abandoned leaving the center tower known as “The Beacon” until 1923. Today the wooden set of the “Three Sisters” has been reunited, restored, and preserved by the Cape Cod National Seashore. Walk about on your own or check with the Salt Pond Visitors Center for tour times. NRHP*

, (18) (located behind the Swift-Daley House) displays hundreds of tools, many unusual and unique to New England. On the same site is the A. Thomas Dill Beach Camp, a survivor of the 1978 storm that ravaged the spit south of the Coast Guard Station. www.easthamhistoricalsociety.org NRHP*
NAUSET LIGHT (3) In 1923 the Lighthouse Service replaced “the Beacon” with one of Chatham’s cast iron and brick lined towers built in 1877. In 1940, it was painted a distinctive red and white. The light characteristic was changed in 1981 from three white flashes to alternating red and white. Threatened by erosion in the 1990s, Eastham residents formed the Nauset Light Preservation Society in 1993 to save and restore the lighthouse and oil house, an effort realized in 1996. In October 1998, the 1875 lighthouse keeper’s home was also moved and reunited with the light tower and oil house. Open to the public May to October; check the days and times in our calendar of events. www.nausetlight.org NRHP*
COAST GUARD STATION (7) Since the early years of the Pilgrims, the Outer Beach of Cape Cod was known as a notorious “graveyard of ships”. In 1871, the United States Congress appropriated funds for 9 life saving stations along the outer shores. The Nauset Station was built and served for many years. It was rebuilt in 1937 and currently stands overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.

COVE BURIAL GROUND (24)
This ancient cemetery, which dates from the mid 1600s to 1770, is one of the oldest cemeteries on Cape Cod. It has some of the
oldest slate gravestones and the oldest known inscribed fieldstone gravestones on the Cape. Located near Town Cove on Route 6, it marks the sites of the town’s first Congregational Church. It is the final resting place of three Mayflower passengers: Constance Hopkins Snow (1677), Lt. Joseph Rogers (1678), and Giles Hopkins (1690), as well as most of the oldest families known to Eastham. NRHP*
BRIDGE ROAD CEMETERY (20)
This cemetery is noted for its variety of gravestone styles spanning two centuries from 1754 to 1886. Some have elaborate inscriptions and epitaphs. NRHP*
Also of historical significance are two additional Eastham cemeteries; Evergreen Cemetery (9), dating back to 1806, and Congregational and Soldiers Cemetery (10), started in 1813, are located side by side on Route 6 in Eastham.

HENRY BESTON'S OUTERMOST HOUSE
Henry Beston came to the Cape as a journalist writing about the Coast Guard. Like most of us who visit the seashore, he was smitten and didn’t want to leave. The Henry Beston Society summarizes it well: Eventually, he had a 20-foot by 16-foot house called “The Fo’castle” built on the dunes of Eastham in 1925, came to visit his shanty for a two-week vacation, and decided to stay for one year. Beston meditated on the rhythms of waves, observed the migrations of birds, and braved the brutal elements in severe winter weather. At the end of his “year on the beach,” he decided that “it was time to close my door,” and returned to his native Quincy. The Fo’castle was ripped from the dunes of the Great Beach in the Blizzard of 1978. Today, there are still "Outermost House" types of structures on the Outer Beach, where occupants live in the same fashion that Beston did in the 1920s. www.henrybeston.org

THE NAUSET BIKE TRAIL is a paved trail which starts at the Cape Cod National Seashore Salt Pond Visitor Center (Nauset Road at Route 6) and ends 2 ¼ miles later at Coast Guard Beach (Doane Road at Ocean View Drive), leading you to magnificent vistas of the salt marsh and the Atlantic Ocean. The trail is wheelchair accessible. Additional parking is available at Doane Rock picnic area, which shortens the ride.
The following guidelines should help provide a safe and enjoyable biking experience in Eastham:
• On bike trails, cyclists must stay to the right and keep children from wandering into the path of oncoming bikes or suddenly stopping on the paved trail.
• Cars have the right of way when crossing town roads. Cyclists MUST STOP at stop signs. Cyclists do not have the right of way.
• Ride single file and moving with traffic on Route 6 and busy roads. Watch children carefully.
• Route 6 is very dangerous for cyclists; you are advised to keep your bike on the sidewalk.
• Wherever possible, cross at the stoplights. State law requires that all bicyclists 16 years of age or younger must wear approved helmets when bicycling or riding as passengers on public ways or property.
Those who drive through Eastham miss the point. To actually see Eastham, you need to take a road less traveled, like one of the two bike paths that cross Eastham. Restaurants and bike shops have access to the trails. Explore wooded forests, kettle ponds, cranberry bogs, a salt marsh, winding creeks and eternal beaches. Perhaps this year you’ll try that bicycle built for two…. indicates map locations on pages 40-41

ACCOMMODATIONS
As the Gateway to the Cape Cod National Seashore, Eastham attracts visitors, sightseers, naturalists and artists from throughout the country and around the world. Many come for just a day; others stay for a week, or even an entire season. And whether you seek upscale and modern or rustic camping, you will find that the hospitality is always warm and genuine.
Some visitors may favor the traditional family owned motel or motor lodge, while others may prefer the more personalized hospitality of the many B&Bs and small historic inns conveniently located throughout the town. Families opting to stay for a week or longer can also consider the camping and RV park, or the many cottage colonies or individual homes available for rent, each offering a variety of amenities to suit your particular needs.
Because Eastham is such a unique destination, many of the facilities are reserved from one year to the next, so it is wise to make reservations early. When that spur-of-the-moment urge hits you to visit, call ahead to check availabilities with the Eastham Visitor Booth, 508-255-3444 (or off-season 508-240-7211). Most establishments accept credit cards, although policies vary from place to place.
On the following pages we have included some easy reference charts as well as a list of real estate rental agents to help plan your next vacation. Please note that this information should serve as a guide only, and while we have tried to verify each listing, you should always confirm details and amenities with each individual accommodation or rental agent.

DINING OUT IN & AROUND EASTHAM
No visit to Cape Cod is complete without sampling our specialties from the sea. It couldn’t be any fresher, as local fishermen draw right from our waters to your plate. Among the delights to choose from are clams, scallops, lobsters, haddock, oysters, and the always popular namesake, “cod”.
The opportunity for great food goes well beyond the sea. Today’s Eastham eateries feature cuisines found throughout the United States and the countries beyond our shores.
Dining on the Lower and Outer Cape is casual; however, shirts and shoes are always a must!
