21st). Enjoy local food trucks, craft beer and wine, over 100 artisan and craft vendors, live entertainment, a 5K road race, and a Dog Costume Parade.

as 1627. The first free enterprise in America was located near the west end of the land cut of the present Cape Cod Canal. The Aptucxet Trading Post was situated on a piece of land between a creek and two rivers; the Manomet River connected with Massachusetts Bay, and the Monument River connected to a body of water that eventually reached the entrance of

ourne is the first town visitors encounter when entering Barnstable County. It has the distinction of occupying most of the land through which the Cape Cod Canal flows.

Whether traveling to the Cape on Route 3 or Route 495 to 25, visitors must pass through at least one of Bourne’s many villages.

English colonists lived in this area as early

New York Harbor and the Hudson River.

It was at this trading Post that the Pilgrims traded goods with the Dutch colonies from the New York area. And it was here that the first currency in America was developed: it was called wampum and was made from purple parts of quahog shells. A replica of the Aptucxet Trading Post is situated off Shore Road in Bourne Village.

In the 1880s, Bourne became an ideal location for manufacturing. Power was provided by windmills and water wheels, and raw manufacturing materials were available in the region. Finished products could be shipped out on trains or ships.

One noteworthy company was the Keith Car Works of Sagamore, which built freight cars. It began work in 1826 and remained in operation for over 100 years. Many houses built by the company can still be seen on both sides of the east end of the Canal.

As the large industrial centers in Massachusetts prospered, the state’s wealthy residents wanted to escape the cities and enjoy the country. They scouted the Cape Cod Canal Region and decided it was perfect for their needs. The cool ocean breezes, sandy beaches and wooded lands made it an ideal summer retreat for the whole family. Over the next few years, many elaborate and expensive summer homes were built in the area. President Grover Cleveland, Shakespearean actor Joseph Jefferson and Boston Globe founder Charles H. Taylor were a few of the region’s famous summer residents.

The features that attracted people here over 100 years ago are still present today, including moderate year-round temperatures, sandy beaches with water temperatures conducive to water sports, abundant fishing and shell fishing locations, and wooded areas in which to observe and enjoy nature. It is an excellent region to use power and sailing vessels both large and small. In the early 1800s, factories were started in the region, taking advantage of the national resources of land, waterpower and wood fuel. The Boston and Sandwich Glass Company was founded in 1825 and grew steadily over a 63-year period to employ 500 workers who created various t ypes of glassware. The company is best known for its pressed-glass items, which could be produced quickly, inexpensively and in large quantities for sale to middleclass shoppers desiring fine objects for their homes. The Boston and Sandwich Glass Company closed in 1888 after the center of pressed-glass production shifted from New England to the Midwest, where the cost of glassmaking was less expensive. Today, glass made at the Sandwich factor y is a highly prized antique collectible. The Sandwich Glass Museum, located across from the Grist Mill in the center of Sandwich village, displays thousands of glass objects made at the factor y during the 19th cent ur y.

areham was discovered in 1603

by Bar t holomew Gosnold, an Englishman who sailed across t he Nor t h At lantic Ocean to explore t he East Coast of Nor t h America.

Gosnold named Cape Cod, Mar t ha’s Vineyard, t he Elizabet han Islands, Cut t yhunk and Agawam—bet ter known as Wareham—as well as ot her local towns.

In 1666, local t ribes sold Agawam to t he Plymout h Colony for grazing lands. The t ribes did not realize t he f ull extent of what t hey had signed;

t he sale gave t he Pilgrims exclusive rights to Agawam.

Early on, t he residents recognized t he impor t ance of herring. Even in Colonial times, st rict r ules were set for how many herring could be caught.

Because herring was a necessit y of lif e, catching and preser v ing t he f ish became a family affair. Oysters were anot her great ly sought af ter food found in t he local waters.

implements and ironware. Many homesteads set up f urnaces and forges so t hat t hey could process t he ore. During t he processing, it was discovered t hat if charcoal was burned instead of wood, t he f ire would be hot ter and t he ore would t hen harden and t urn to steel. This steel could be used to make st ronger nails. In 1819, t he f irst cut-nail factor y in t he region was st ar ted; many ot her nail companies soon followed. Only one nail company is still in existence: The Tremont Nail Company holds t he distinction of owning one of t he oldest operating indust rial buildings in America.

Realizing it’s historical signif icance, t he town has purchased t he proper t y in order to ensure its preser vation.

O verlook ing t he calm waters of Buzzards Bay is t he pict uresque seaside v illage of Onset. Once a favored destination for Duke Elling ton, Tommy Dorsey and Cab Calloway, t he v illage continues its fondness for t he Blues wit h its Annual Onset Blues Festival held each Aug ust. Today, Onset is a burgeoning vacation destination again, wit h t he resurgence of newly renovated Victorian mansions and cot t ages t hat line t he sandy crescentshaped beach.

A Brief History Of The Cape Cod Canal

The Cape Cod Canal is a navigation project designed to facilitate safe movement of ocean-going vessels and shorten coastal travel around the historically treacherous outer shores of Cape Cod. Though the primary purpose is navigation, the Cape Cod Canal and surrounding 1,153 acres of federal lands are also managed for public recreation and environmental stewardship.

Opening to ship traffic in 1914, the Cape Cod Canal was constructed, financed, and operated as a private waterway. The US government purchased the Cape Cod Canal in 1927. The US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) assumed operation and maintenance of the Canal on March 30, 1928. USACE oversaw a massive reconstruction project between 1933-1940. During this time, the Cape Cod Canal’s dimensions were expanded and realigned to what we see today. It was also during this time, with the use of New Deal funding, that all three bridges that span the Cape Cod Canal were constructed.

Today, USACE still operates and maintains the 17.4-mile-long sea-level Cape Cod Canal and its bridges. The tidal waterway is surveyed and dredged to keep the channel at least 32 feet deep by 480 feet wide at mean low tide. capecodcanalchamber.org

It is operated 24 hours a day. USACE marine traffic controllers monitor all vessels transiting the Canal and direct the movement of all large traffic. USACE patrol boat operators aid the controllers in helping to keep vessel traffic safe.

USACE Park Rangers serve as stewards of the federal lands surrounding the waterway and provide recreational opportunities for 2+ million visitors a year. There are multiple day-use areas along both sides of the waterway where the public can park, free of charge, to enjoy the view and picnic, as well as access 13.5 miles of paved water-side service roads. They are open for the public to walk, run, cycle, skate, and access some of the best shoreline fishing on the east coast.

USACE welcomes you to learn more about the Cape Cod Canal’s history, operations, and recreational opportunities at the Cape Cod Canal Visitor Center.
