Reflecting on The Warm Side of the Cape
What makes Harwich so special to each person who lives, works, and visits here? It’s the sense of belonging and the welcoming feeling you receive in each of our seven villages. Reflecting on where we came from, where we are, and where we are going is this retrospective and celebration of our community. Within Harwich are seven villages − East Harwich, Harwich Center, Harwich Port, North Harwich, Pleasant Lake, South Harwich, and West Harwich –offering culinary delights, captain’s homes, historic buildings, and intriguing cemeteries. We are sharing some of the unique treasures, people, and places that have made us who we are.
You’ll find that each village has its own special flavor − all seasoned with a large helping of warmth and friendliness. Whether you’re checking in to one of our charming bed and breakfast inns or our 5-Star Resort Wequassett Resort & Golf Club (now open year-round!), visiting for the day, or living and working here, our warm Harwich hospitality will welcome you.

recipe for success
What’s the at Harwich’s restaurants?
A heaping scoop of culinary talent infused with passion
Brax Landing’s Fish Tacos are filled with local Cod, the freshest ingredients from the garden, avocado, and topped with a flavorful combination of sriracha sauce, chipotle mayo, and a wedge of lime.
With more than 30 dining establishments within Harwich’s seven villages, there is always something to tempt every palate. For these owners and chefs, the common ingredient for their success is a passion for what they create. From the owner who started at age 15, to the retired EMT who creates colorful unique cakes, to the couple who has made ice cream healthy and enjoyable for all, Harwich restaurants are led by an interesting group of folks! Even if you had the “recipe book” from these culinary partners, you wouldn’t be able to replicate their offerings. That’s because they not only serve the best local food, they blend that with generosity to the community, a welcoming feeling, and comfortable surroundings. They have all marinated their businesses in enjoyment and inspiration − and that comes through as you peruse the menus and their special offerings.
Even after many years of working in the business, these restaurateurs absolutely boil over with enthusiasm for their customers and community.
Brax Landing
At one of our longtime waterfront gems, Brax Landing, a key ingredient to their success is pride, and has been the mainstay for more than 40 years. Partners Ron Leidner and Jeff Gomes had an admiration for one another back in the beginning in the early 1990s, and that helped Brax get to where it is today. They learned the business together, and early on − like all restaurants getting started – it was a struggle at times, but they built the foundation of what residents and visitors alike love about Brax Landing.
Ron admired Jeff ’s loyalty and the fact that he knew every square inch of the building, as he worked himself up from dishwasher, raw bar guy, and bartender/manager to owning it today with his current business partner Tad Peavey. An annual tradition Jeff and Tad started years ago, and still continue today, is Brax’s free Thanksgiving dinner,

served to the socially and economically needy in our community. Another ingredient to their success? Giving back to the community and treating everyone fairly. Here’s a great example of that: Brax had a lobster tank had in the lobby, where they used to have 1 ½ lb. lobsters delivered. At one point, there was a 15 lb. lobster in the tank − being two very sensitive men, Jeff and Tad agreed they couldn’t sell it and drove the lobster down to Red River Beach and let him go. Jeff and Tad both grew up here, and they continue to build on what Jeff and Ron started 30 years ago. They have high standards, treat their staff fairly, and give them opportunities to succeed. With their waterfront location and delicious local food − from salads and appetizers to lobster rolls and fish and chips − you’ll always leave satisfied and smiling.
Hot Stove Saloon
Next, we travel up the street in Harwich Port to the Hot Stove Saloon. This is another restaurant that Ron Leidner started − this time with his son, Gabe. The Hot Stove Saloon opened in May 2005, not long after the Boston Red Sox won their first World Series in 86 years, and it hit a home run.
Centrally located, this family friendly relaxed atmosphere has 13 high-definition TVs to kick back and catch the game. It’s also a great place to meet up with friends after a day at the beach or work. Decorating the walls of the restaurant is wonderful baseball memorabilia, some dating back to the early 1900s. The youngest visitors are treated to a handful of baseball cards and other ballpark favorites! This local favorite is open year-round. The recipe for success at the Hot Stove is quality food and friendly staff − many who have worked at the “Stove” for well over 10 years. With a chill vibe and cozy atmosphere, you can’t help but keep coming back.
As veterans of the Air Force, Ron and Gabe to continue the tradition of giving back, honoring our veterans every year on Veteran’s Day with a free pot roast dinner. The Hot Stove has also raised more than $125,000 to give back to the community.
Young or old, the Hot Stove truly hits it out of the park!

Lanyard Bar and Grill
Continuing along Route 28, you’ll find the Lanyard Bar & Grill, which is heading into its 6th season. A favorite of locals, this friendly hometown hot spot is open yearround. When dining at the Lanyard, you will find true comfort food. Owner and Chef Ben Porter says these have been a staple since they opened − and with 27 years of experience there’s a special zing that embodies the flair of Ben and his culinary team. The menu offers comfort food with a twist, and the Lanyard’s imagination comes through in their nightly specials.
The recipe for success at the Lanyard Bar and Grill is the joy of cooking fresh food from scratch with an array of offerings. They also welcome functions in the upper level for up to 40 people and the patio area for a more intimate 30 people.
A special highlight for the Lanyard Bar and Grill was watching Ben compete in the Food Network’s Beachside Brawl this past season. On Sunday nights, the Lanyard would welcome their customers to come in and cheer on Ben while watching the show. As the oldest castmate, he was thrilled with the integrity of the show and that it was all about the cooking. He recalls that at times

Brenda’s Cakes for All Occasions
With one giant mixing bowl, two career paths, raising a family, and a batch of passion, Brenda’s Cakes for all Occasions is created. For Brenda, creativity started at a young age − if it was colorful, confetti or glitter, and she could make it with her own two hands, it was for her. She was always
interested in baking and enjoyed helping her mom at the holidays. She eventually started cake decorating after making a cake for a friend’s birthday, and continued to perfect her skills while creating increasingly beautiful and delicious baked goods. One of her earliest successes was making a cake that she used a bag of Oreos to decorate. She remembers really loving how it came out, and even better it sold right after she put it in the case.
Brenda had a career as a full-time firefighter/paramedic for 23 years while still baking and decorating on the side and raising her family. In 2017, Brenda decided to retire from the fire department and make baking her primary career. She already had a fabulous client base, so it was time to educate herself on the latest techniques, invest in equipment and supplies, learn about running a business, and help people make memories and celebrate special events.

FOOD
With any new business there are things you learn, and when during the first few months of Covid Brenda’s husband, Dennis, was laid off from his job, she learned quickly how to integrate him into the business. He was able to help with baking, making frosting, hand-cutting sugar cookie dough, creating fondant figures, and learning how to make chocolates. Brenda notes that Dennis is very creative and is always coming up with new ideas for decorating, and they really enjoy working together every day.
A high point for Brenda is the cake consults in her home, where she offers everything from traditional cakes and pies to towers of cookies and whoopie pies. She loves meeting with clients and helping them translate their vision and theme to beautiful, tasty treats. Being creative and enjoying what they do as their cake business grows are key components to their business model.
The recipe for success for Brenda’s Cakes for All Occasions is making sure to take good care of a client so that they will come back to you. She truly believes that is how her earlier profession as a firefighter/paramedic helps her business today. As she and Dennis continue to maintain the quality of homemade cakes, cookies, and more, they look forward to being the icing on your cake.
SchoolhouseIce Cream
Susan Stanley had a dream and like many dreams, if you wish hard enough, they just might come true: She wanted to live on Cape Cod and own a seasonal business. She also loved ice cream. So, in 1996, when she had the opportunity to buy Schoolhouse Ice Cream, she jumped at it!
Since then, she and Jack Hickey have produced the most sought-after ice cream on the Lower Cape, with super premium ice cream made with all quality ingredients, 55 different flavors in all, some sugar-free! There are 35 flavors always available in rotation, including sherbet, low-fat yogurt, and sorbets. Generous portions are always served and they even offer special “doggie” sundaes for your furry friends. It’s a small scoop of vanilla topped with a dog biscuit, free with your order.
You can enjoy your ice cream in the shop, which is fully air-conditioned, on the deck with its wind chimes and birdhouses, or on the sweeping front porch filled with seasonal flowers. Schoolhouse Ice Cream has plenty of parking and is handicapped accessible.
Schoolhouse Ice Cream’s recipe for success is their 55 different flavors and the love for ice cream that they share one scoop at a time.
Sundae School
Sundae School was a family business from the beginning – when it opened in 1976, it was a way for a schoolteacher, his wife, and their young son to spend summers on the Cape. From the first scoop, they knew Sundae School Ice Cream would be something special because of the involvement of so many friends and relatives. Customers love watch-
ing the high-quality ice cream being made right in front of them in a White Mountain freezer. It quickly became obvious that they couldn’t keep up with the demand and added a second ice cream machine. Even so, there were many days when they would sell out of ice cream and have to close the doors early.
As years went by and the business grew, so did the family, which now has five children, all of whom have worked or still work in the family business. It has become a tradition that employees are hired as high school students and continue to work there throughout their college years. There is also a large number of siblings who work together at Sundae School, creating a true family atmosphere. The Endres family takes pride in watching “their” kids get accepted to great colleges, go on to successful careers, and start their own families of little scoopers.
Over the years, the store locations have

also grown. The East Orleans store opened in May 1984. The shop is a great place to stop at on your way to or from Nauset Beach. The Harwich Port location was added in May 1998. All three locations offer the same delicious ice cream and each store has its own personality.
The recipe for success at Sundae School is making high-quality ice cream using a fresh mixture of milk, cream, and sugar with a high butterfat content. The price of ingredients may continue to climb but they won’t compromise on quality. For example, when it comes to flavorings, they only use the best pure vanilla extract, real chocolate chips, and fresh fruit.
All the ice cream and frozen yogurts are made on the premises in small batches, and they take pride in serving their famous hot fudge sundaes topped with real whipped cream and a fresh Bing cherry. The fresh fruit sundaes include strawberry, blueberry,
and raspberry when available.
The Endres family look forward to your next visit and for you to further your ice cream education at one of their Sundae School locations.
Sweet Izzy’s
Ice cream brings happiness, unless you are allergic or have health challenges. Mike and Elizabeth Doucette launched Sweet Izzy’s Ice Cream Shop, named after their daughter Isabella, to help fill this need. The concept came from Isabella not being able to eat ice cream, so they created a vegan, gluten-free ice cream shop.
Sweet Izzy’s in Harwich Port has made ice cream enjoyable and accessible for everyone. Everything they make is plant-based and is vegan, soy-free, dairy-free, and gluten-free. They use as few ingredients as possible,

and everything is made from scratch. They offer hard-packed and soft-serve flavors, sundaes, banana splits, milkshakes, toppings, and cones − all of which are vegan, soy-free and gluten-free. The ice cream is a base of gluten-free oat milk and coconut milk. The fudge sauce contains the same oat milk. They bring eating ice cream to a whole another plateau of delectability, and you wouldn’t even know the difference.
Mike and Elizabeth are self-taught ice cream makers who knew what they wanted the end result to be: A place for sweet, safe, and healthy treats for all to savor.
The key ingredient for Sweet Izzy’s recipe for success is simple: Having a safe place to bring a child with allergies and a team that is dedicated to making everyone’s experience memorable and delicious. team that is dedicated to making everyone’s

unique collaboration to preserve Harwich’s history
The Harwich Fire Department traces its roots to the old fire station, which sits at 203 Bank Street next to the beautiful former cranberry bogs that are now part of the Robert F. Smith Cold Brook Preserve. That fire station opened under the leadership of Chief George Moody in 1928 and remained the heart of the Harwich Fire Department until its move in 1995 to the current facility at 175 Sisson Rd.
When we look back to how the old fire station came to be, it is thanks to the Annual Town Meeting process on February 6, 1928.
ALL PASSED UNANIMOUSLY AT ANNUAL TOWN MEETING ON FEBRUARY 6, 1928
Article 37. To see if the town will vote to raise and appropriate the sum of $10,750.00 to purchase a five-hundredgallon Pumping Engine with 3,000 feet of 2½ hose, four lengths of 4 inch suction hose, and other necessary small equipment.
This appropriation to be taken from the surplus now in the Town Treasury, a committee of seven citizens to be appointed to select the apparatus and equipment.
Article 39. To see if the town will vote to purchase a piece of land on Bank Street for the purpose of erecting thereon a Fire Engine House, and to raise and appropriate the sum of $500.00 for this purpose, and to act fully thereon.
Article 40. To see if the town will vote to raise and appropriate the sum of $7,000.00 for the purpose of building a fire engine house and installing a fire alarm; a committee to be appointed to select the design, let the contract and

supervise the erection of the same.
Article 41. To see if the town will vote to pay a salary of $1200.00 per annum to a man to be stationed at the fire house at all times, as a driver of the apparatus, and to maintain the equipment, house and grounds.
Fast forward to 2022, when a collaboration between the Harwich Fire Association and the Harwich Conservation Trust works to preserve nature and history together. They jointly bid on and were awarded the purchase of the property at 203 Bank Street.
Both organizations will use their skills and expertise to improve and preserve the site.
Going forward, the Harwich Conservation Trust will continue to enhance the public walking trails there, along with plans for major Americans with Disabilities Act improvements to the trails and walkways along a half-mile stretch in the preserve. The area is now part of the Harwich Conservation Trust’s diverse catalog of walking trails and nature preserves in town, open for all to enjoy.
At the same time, the Harwich Fire Association is in the early stages of restoring
the old station at 203 Bank Street back to its historic beauty and simplicity. The old fire station will stand as a monument to the tradition of firefighting. It will also serve as the new home for the 1928 Maxim Fire Engine that served as the first motorized fire engine for the Town of Harwich, which the Harwich Fire Association restored in the late 1990s.
The plans for the building are still in the design phase, however, one of the interesting pieces that will potentially grace the inside is a fire pole that was originally at Boston Fire 1 − so if you have ever wanted to slide down a fire pole, this may be your chance. The Harwich Fire Association also plans to incorporate meeting and event space, displays that celebrate the rich tradition and history of the Harwich Fire Department, storage for the Maxim fire engine, and most likely some residential space as well.
The preservation of this gem will have many uses as a learning center and museum, and will even be able to host celebrations − what a unique spot for a birthday party, whether you are 6 or 60. In five short years this building will be 100 years old − what a gift to Harwich it truly is.
Much of this preservation work is being supported by donations, so watch for the firefighter boots during Harwich Chamber’s Port Summer Nights on Wednesdays in July and August in Harwich Port.

Special, not spooky
Local cemeteries provide a look at Harwich history and local personalities
While some may find cemeteries disconcerting, they are an ideal place to get a feel for the history and notable residents of our community. Exploring the cemeteries within our seven villages is a journey through our history and who we are. Did you know there are almost 20 cemeteries cared for by our town? Strolling through these highlighted cemeteries, we found fascinating people buried right here in Harwich, who were part of our history with many ties to our community.
While people often visit a cemetery to honor the final resting place of someone they have lost, we can all learn something from these special places, whether we have a personal connection or not. The cemeteries of Harwich feature many notable people who carved out history on the local, regional, and national level.
These include a Speaker of the House, the First Lady of Jazz, a 1936 Olympic hockey player, a comic strip artist, as well as numerous veterans and Harwich’s hometown hero, Jimmy Marceline. We start our journey at Harwich Center’s Island Pond Cemetery.
Captain Alvin Cahoon
In 1846, Captain Alvin Cahoon was credited with producing the first commercial crop of cranberries from a bog near Pleasant Lake. This was just the beginning − when he ran into issues with the water supply, he dug the canal to solve the challenge, and as time went on the canal was the key to the success of other cranberry farms in the area. The land in the area was gifted to the Harwich Conservation Trust as a way to protect Har-
wich, and it all began with Captain Cahoon’s interest in the cranberry.
John Charles Lax
John Lax was the captain of the Boston University ice hockey team, and was elected to the BU Sports Hall of Fame. Lax was a member of the 1936 USA Ice Hockey Olympic Team under Walter Brown, which won the bronze medal. He continued to play hockey until World War II.
Marceline was shrewd in his real estate dealings, researching property deeds and clearing titles. He built homes on some of the properties and rented those to locals at reasonable rates, becoming a local legend when it came to affordable housing.
A huge supporter of education, he sold land very inexpensively to be the home of Cape Cod Regional Technical High School. Due to his advocacy for education and learning, he was the first inductee into the Harwich High School Hall of Fame for his civic involvement.

upbeat attitude. She always said that her reward was that she gave people joy.
Traveling out of Harwich Center and down into Harwich Port we stop in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, where a charismatic former Speaker of the House is buried.
Tip O’Neill
Tip O’Neill was an American politician who served as the Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1977 to 1987. He was the only Speaker to serve for five complete consecutive Congresses. O’Neill was a great-hearted man who treated everyone with the same respect, no matter who they were. He was the son of a bricklayer and as a youth would mow lawns for 17 cents an hour. He rose to become one of the most powerful men in the world as the Speaker of the House yet always remembered that politics was local.
He was a caring friend, a natural storyteller, and embodied the spirit of the party. He made politics fun with his keen sense of humor. Throughout his career he was an advocate for universal healthcare, job programs, energy initiatives and so much more. Tip O’Neill was a champion for working people.
O’Neill had a great fondness for his time in Harwich Port, where he enjoyed his retirement relaxing and playing golf, and where he wrote his two books, Man of the House and All Politics is Local.

his future wife at Ohio Wesleyan University; they were wed in 1955. Following a brief stint in the U.S. Navy aboard a destroyer where he dabbled with a cartoon strip for the ship's newsletter, Berry leveraged his degree in business administration in several ventures, including work as a management consultant in Manhattan. However, in 1961, with one young child and a second on the way, Berry made a radical and risky career change by accepting a position as a staff illustrator on the Cleveland Plain Dealer. His talent was recognized almost immediately. He created an editorial feature called “Berry’s World” in 1963 and achieved national syndication within months. By the age of 33, Berry was a media celebrity with a daily reach of over 400 papers nationwide, invitations to the White House, and had received the highest awards in the industry.
A constant source of nourishment throughout his life was time spent at the old family homestead on Cape Cod. The grandson and great grandson of sea captains, Berry was an avid and lifelong sailor, as well as a tough competitor in tennis and golf, a gifted painter and photographer, and an adventurous world traveler.

150 YEARS IN THE SAME BUILDING
It’s extremely rare for a business to celebrate 150 years − and in the same building for all of that time − while continuing to meet the needs of its community for an entire century and a half.
H. T. Crosby & Son Monuments and Markers was founded in 1872 at its Harwich Center location, 672 Main Street. Tom Blute has owned the business for 33 years and still treasures it every day, knowing that at the end of the day, if you can say you have helped someone, then it has been a great day.
Clients often come see Blute during difficult times, as they are choosing a
gravestone for a departed loved one. As he greets families, he tries to create a more relaxing environment to discuss his special-
ized service, sitting at a round table with the family. He will review specific details, such as where the family has their plot and some characteristics of their loved one, something that will embody the person they were. He treats the emotional experience as a healing session where the family can share about the loved one they are honoring. Blute considers it a success when families come out of this process saying that he made it a lot easier than they thought it would be.
Blute wasn’t always in the monument business, but he did grow up around the funeral business. After working selling securities, he realized that wasn’t for him. Around the same time, Bud Erickson was

selling the monument business in Harwich. Blute moved back home, worked with the staff for about six weeks, and said he’d buy the business.
It has always been a family business, started by Henry T. Crosby, then led by his son Bertram, and then Erickson, who had worked for his own father’s monument business in Quincy, and now to Tom Blute, whose son Zach has often worked alongside him. Tom is supported in the office by Janet Our, who has been with the business for 13 years. She’s also from a prominent family that has owned and operated a local business for over 60 years. Family appreciation is a key to the continued success of the business.
In addition to the headstones and gravestone monuments and memorials that make up a large portion of his work, Blute also serves business and civic needs creating custom markers in granite, bronze, and boulders. He’s currently working closely with the Harwich Chamber on a future project called “Pillars of our Community” that will feature monuments to be placed in front of the Chamber − they will adorn the garden and honor people who have made Harwich such a special place.
While Blute values the family aspect of business, he wants his three children to find their passion and only join the monument business if they truly choose it. You need to love what you do in a specialized business like this − Tom Blute has made this important work his passion, and it shows.

The journey to creating Harwich’s Cultural Districts
Stitchology is one of many makers within 204 Sisson Road; Ukeladies entertain as part of the Harwich Chamber of Commerce’s Port Summer Nights Music.
Connecting to history and sharing our culture
This year, Harwich was proud to have received designations from the state for two Cultural Districts. While there are a number of communities in Massachusetts with one Cultural District, it’s a rarity for a town to have two. It’s an honor for our town, and a sign of the true commitment to the many facets that make up Harwich. When we combine our deep Cape Verdean roots along with the arts and culture, our businesses, and our residents, we come up with a winning, vibrant community.
Much of Harwich’s history starts with our Cape Verdean community, which came to Harwich in the late 1800s. What the Cape Verdeans brought with them was a strong sense of culture, an ethic of hard work, and a tight community. Today, these traits still exist and are a foundation for why Harwich is considered “The Warm Side of the Cape.”
A few years ago, Harwich hosted a visit from President Francisco Tavares, Island of Brava Mayor, Cape Verde. He came to Harwich by the invitation of Harwich resident Albert Raneo, to build upon the relations
with the Cape Verdean community. While he was here, he encouraged the community to learn about their heritage and history and to develop connections between the two countries. This connection between the two nations will broaden our understanding and deepen our cultural activities and traditions. Both Harwich and the Cape Verdean community share the joy of the arts, music and dance, a strong work ethic that welcomed the cranberry industry, family values, and the culture of sharing and hospitality. We will continue to share with future generations this shared history.
As the town reviewed our assets to find locations that could help enrich our culture throughout the community, a vision arose to transform and repurpose the building formerly known as Harwich Middle School. When the towns of Harwich and Chatham merged their schools into Monomoy Regional School District, the former middle school building was returned to the town. To take on the big task of repurposing the building − but always up to the challenge – was Carolyn Carey, Director of the Harwich Community
Center. The goal was to create place for artists, crafters, organizations, and visionaries to come together and share their talents with one another and with the community.
The very first artist to take on studio space was Georgene Riedl, who owns Cross Rip Gallery in Harwich Port. She showcases outstanding Cape artists at her gallery, and she needed a quiet place to work on her own art. Her studio is a former science lab, which seems appropriate as she experiments with her own artwork.
Today, within the building you will find 24 painters, 4 writers, 6 potters, 3+ photographers, a printer, a carver, a calligrapher, 5 online entrepreneurs, a gallery owner, 7 private instructors, 5 textile/jewelry makers, 2 nonprofits, 8+ makers, 5 schoolteachers, 4 college professors, and Stitchology, an afterschool program where young students learn to sew.
How did we get from that initial dream to a building humming with activity and two Cultural Districts? Back in February 2018,

the Massachusetts Cultural Council came to Harwich and presented to the Board of Selectmen that Harwich had been chosen as the only town in the commonwealth, along with five cities, to enter into the Cultural Compact. That was an honor in its own right, but Harwich opted to strive for more and obtain two Cultural District designations, one for Harwich Center and one for Harwich Port. The Town of Harwich, Harwich Cultural Council, Harwich Chamber
of Commerce, and Massachusetts Cultural Council have now formally entered into a statewide cultural agreement. By developing these two cultural districts, the town is showing its commitment to the idea that culture is an essential element of a strong and vibrant community. Economic development goes hand and hand with cultural districts, so having two in our town is an incredible feat, defining the character of our community now and into the future.
In July 2022, the town continued to support arts and culture with the hiring of Kara Mewhinney as the Director of Cultural Affairs for Harwich. After the announcement of the two Cultural District designations, Mewhinney said, “These designations are more than just a name or location to the community, it is an understanding that they have the support to move forward so they can continue pushing arts and culture as a focal point in our economic growth.”
The Center is home to many events, historical sites, and landmarks. The Cape Cod Rail Trail runs parallel to historic Main Street, connecting the district's valuable assets. The Harwich Center Cultural District is anchored by 204 Sisson Road (the former Harwich Middle School building), which is home to the creative community noted above, as well as the epicenter for town cultural programs and events. The Harwich Center Cultural District is home to our rich history but also other town assets such as the Harwich Mariners Baseball Team, which plays within the Cape Cod Baseball League, one of the nation’s premier collegiate summer leagues. The Harwich Chamber of Commerce is so very proud of each and every one of our members for pivoting in recent years − for some, this even meant recreating their businesses. For the 2022 award, we wanted to honor a unique business that takes care of a very important part of our families when we are busy at work or enjoying our community. Nine decades of N
beautifying Harwich
early a century ago, on April 21, 1932, a few local women concerned about the landscape in Harwich came together and started the Garden Club. Today, the Garden Club of Harwich is celebrating its 90th Anniversary. The founding group consisted of President Mrs. Ralph Snow Sr., Vice President Mrs. John Kurtz, Recording Secretary Mrs. Roswell Nye, Corresponding Secretary Mrs. William Ford, Treasurer Mrs. John Snow, and Activities Chairman Mrs. Neil McMath. The Garden Club had a limit of 70 members and the membership dues were $1 per member.
On July 5, 1932, they held their first meeting, which was held at the community building attached to the Harwich Port Library. Following that initial meeting, the 25 charter members met at their homes on the first Tuesday of each month for tea. During that first summer, they held their inaugural Flower Show, making a total of $68.75. The next year, they joined the Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts, and the dues for the state federation were $10.00 plus five cents for each member. As the club grew, they extended their

meetings to the winter months and continued to meet in members’ homes since there was no heat in the community building. As the club grew more interested in the welfare of Harwich, they offered to put up signs at all town limits, however the state denied them permission. Later that year, there was money earmarked for the town, so the Garden Club made suggestions on how to spend it – such as gypsy moth control, plantings around school buildings, mosquito control, and roadside work along Forest Street.
The club was interested in bringing education leaders, conservation leaders, and civic leaders together to stimulate interest in the landscape throughout Harwich. As the community became engaged and the membership grew, the Garden Club continued planting trees, shrubs, and flowers and tending to the gardens they added through out the seven villages of Harwich. In 1972, the Brooks Academy grounds needed some care and attention, so the Garden Club took on the project. The town granted them permission to remove overgrown bushes and add plantings, as well as to connect the upper and lower grounds on the north side. Many groups came together to fundraise and donate – for example, the Girl Scouts donated 80 bulbs to the project. It was a true community collaboration.
Over many decades – and continuing today – a committee of the Harwich Garden Club tends to the eight beds at Brooks Academy.
Another committee tends to the gardens surrounding the fountain. In addition, the Harwich Historical Society granted permission to the Garden Club to care for the brick wall on the Brooks Academy property. This area continues to receive lots of love from the Garden Club, as Brooks Academy is a focal point in Harwich Center.
This is just one of the many stunning works of love and beautification that the Garden Club bestows upon the community of Harwich. Every Memorial Day Weekend, the club holds an annual Plant Sale at Doane Park. All year long, residents and visitors alike can enjoy the colorful creativity of the Garden Club’s planters throughout the seven villages of Harwich. These planters change each season and are carefully tended to by the talented Garden Club members all year long. During the holiday season, the Garden Club helps decorate Harwich by hanging wreaths throughout town, a project that has grown over the years and is another way the Garden Club and the town work together to make Harwich festive and beautiful. The Garden Club’s holiday boutique is also held the first weekend in December as part of Christmas In Harwich – the opportunity to get festive plantings and greens is always a big hit and the event sells out within hours.
Happy 90th Anniversary to the Garden Club of Harwich, thank you for all you have done and continue to do to make Harwich so beautiful.

Bed & Breakfast The Arrival
When visiting the Cape in late 2020, Chelsea Nicolas and Jason Strohmaier discovered a historic gem of West Harwich known as the Uriel Doane Jr. House. Uriel Doane Jr. was a local clipper ship captain in the 1800s, and the house is eligible for the National Register of Historic Places, as is West Harwich Village. In April 2021, they bought the Uriel Doane Jr. House and have jumped in with both feet. Chelsea and Jason’s dream is to marry the new and old, by restoring and renovating the house, keeping its original charm and features while modernizing the amenities and making it their own.
They have done their best to keep or reuse as much of the building materials as possible – for example, as part of the remodel they took out a wall, and that beautiful old growth lumber is now part of the framing of another room. They have found bricks and
heart pine floors that were reclaimed from Massachusetts mills slated for demolition and brought them in to be part of the new life at the house.
Jason loves to scour Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist for people on the Cape who would like to get rid of their raw materials, such as bluestone, cobblestone, and bricks. Chelsea and Jason are so determined to keep the integrity of the house’s architecture and history that they have even gone and dug up unused materials themselves. Currently, there are several pallets of bricks for walkways salvaged from their own decommissioned chimneys, along with two pallets of cobblestones in the driveway that came from a road that was pulled up in Beverly, Massachusetts.
Inspired by the history of the 1860 house and honoring its original owner, Chelsea
and Jason felt it fitting to name their Bed Breakfast “The Arrival,” as Uriel Doane Jr. captained a ship called the Rival. Couples sharing a common life’s interest is a theme then and now − just as Chelsea and Jason take their journey together on bringing life back to this historic house, Didama Doane, Uriel’s wife, kept a “sea captain’s wife journal” of her two-year voyage with him on the Rival.
This young couple is also very interested in using their new property to experiment with sustainable gardening practices and permaculture, focusing on native plants and edible landscaping. They look forward to using these natural goodies to create menus their guests will enjoy. They truly want this to feed into how they create the breakfast offerings of the B&B, serving guests food fresh from their garden and from other local growers and makers.

The Uriel Doane Jr. House – now known as THE ARRIVAL − is just one of the many historic locations in West Harwich that will have a new future in the charming village. Chelsea and Jason hope they can inspire others to continue with the restoration of Captain’s Row that is already underway thanks to the efforts of the town and their neighbors. Their enthusiasm is infectious − Chelsea and Jason are so proud to be the stewards of this spot and are excited to share it with the community. They’re so committed to this historic spot that they have chosen to hold their wedding at the property in September. They believe it is the perfect way to celebrate the culmination of this incredible project, showcasing the many ways the property can be enjoyed, and emphasizing their commitment to each other, to history, and to our community.

There’s nothing better than a summer read, flipping pages under a sunny sky. Harwich is blessed to have multiple libraries where you can find just the right book – one delightful spot is the smaller yet historic Harwich Port Library. Set in a classic Cape-style home, the Harwich Port Library welcomes residents and visitors alike looking for that quiet break from the hustle and bustle of downtown Harwich Port or an easy stop on your way to Bank Street Beach. It is a quaint, out-of-theway local secret and one of our community’s true delights, dating back to the 1920s.
As with many organizations, the Harwich Port Library did have to move around until it found the perfect spot to build its foundation in the community. Its past homes traveled some truly historic spots in Harwich in the early 1900s, with the first home in the Red Cross Rooms, with the rent being paid by Mr. E.G Eldredge. Subsequently, it moved to J.B. Bakers, then to the other half of the Florence building, followed by the store next to the Modern Theatre. It then made its permanent home in the present location on Bank Street.

The Harwich Port Library’s final and current location on Bank Street –this Cape-style home houses great reading for all ages.
The story began in February 1920, with a gift from Mrs. Anne (Harold S.) Van Buren of 400 to 500 books. The next steps were to organize a Board of Directors and develop membership to the Harwich Port Library, which in 1922 was set at 50 cents. As donations came in from notable residents to the library’s building fund, the library was on its way.
Three years later, the volume of books grew to 3,469, and the annual report from the board of directors showed the circulation of 6,880 books for that year. The building fund received a $1,022.90 and a desirable building lot was gifted by summer resident Mrs. Paul Gray of Detroit. Three years later, on July 4, 1925, the building was dedicated with much celebration and fanfare, including 500 people dancing to an orchestra and enjoying a clambake on Ayer Lane.
According to a quote from the July 15,
1925, Harwich Independent, “The Harwich Port Library is established not only in our town but in our hearts and is for the use of the people; but at the same time it should be regarded by the people as a sacred trust to maintain and support.”
There are many reasons why libraries are essential, as they support educational opportunities, preserve cultural heritage and history, provide access to necessary resources, and spark the imagination of generations within our community.
In the digital age, there is still something magical about opening a book – especially when doing so in a library where others have
been doing the same for 100 years. Today, it has become a favorite of many residents and visitors alike for its charm, history, location, and special events. During the summer, it is a highlight for many children to have their favorite hometown team, the Harwich Mariners, come to the Harwich Port Library for a special story time.
As the Harwich Port Library celebrates its first 100 years and looks forward to the next 100 years, it is committed to the vision established in the 1920s − serving the community through education and socialization. Be sure to experience the joy of visiting this local classic for your next summer reading adventure.

With 21 saltwater and freshwater beaches, the shores of Harwich offer something for everyone. Harwich’s many Nantucket Sound ocean beaches provide gently rolling waves, soft sand, seashells to discover, and plenty of room for a game of football in the sand. Meanwhile, with more than a dozen freshwater ponds, including Long Pond, the Cape’s largest lake, you’ll never lack for fun in the sun, or an escape of relaxation.
Swimming, collecting treasure, relaxing in the sun, nature walks… Harwich’s premier location offers many ways to enjoy the beaches of Cape Cod. Nantucket Sound, the triangular area between Cape Cod, Nantucket, and Martha’s Vineyard in the Atlantic Ocean, is a diverse marine habitat encompassing the open sea as well as salt marshes with warm-water beaches. The Sound temperatures approach 75 degrees in the summer due to being shielded from the southward flowing Newfoundland current. The fall weather is mild, keeping the waters warm longer – making these months glorious beach-going times.
Many memories have been made at the beach – family days spent frolicking in the sand and waves, long walks along stone jetties, evenings spent watching the sun set on the horizon. Each of Harwich’s beaches has its own distinct personality – why not visit them all to see which best fits your mood?
Some of the most popular ocean beaches include Red River Beach, Bank Street Beach, and Earle Road Beach. Notable freshwater beaches include Long Pond and Sand Pond.
The beach isn’t just for swimming and sunning, either! Play catch, fly a kite, practice beach yoga, toss a Frisbee, or just relax with a book and enjoy the gorgeous view.
The many ponds in town offer clean, family-friendly spots for swimming, fishing, paddle boarding, and, of course, boating. There are two ramps on Long Pond. Motor-

There is no shortage of options in Harwich – there are dozens of different venues where you can enjoy fun in the sun, including 11 miles of tidal shoreline along Nantucket Sound and Pleasant Bay and numerous freshwater beaches. You can spend one day frolicking in the salt water at an ocean beach, and the next at a freshwater pond enjoying a cool, refreshing dip. Pine Oaks Village
Housing opportunities rooted in Harwich
While driving down Bank Street or Oak Street in Harwich, you’ve likely seen signs for Pine Oaks Village. Pine Oaks Village One, II and III represent 163 units of exceptional, affordable senior housing – one of the town’s largest providers of affordable housing.
In 1975, Parson Al at the First Congregrational Church of Harwich took a group of church leaders aside and disclosed to them a strong need for low-income housing for seniors and handicapped residents in the town of Harwich. The Social Action Subcommittee was started by President John Nelson and Vice President Paul Doane. This committee was charged with developing plans and seeking financing to create affordable housing in town.
Later that year, Mid-Cape Church Homes Inc. (MCCH) was formally incorporated, separated from the First Congregational Church, and established and adopted its own formal bylaws. The purpose was to provide low-income housing for qualified seniors and handicapped persons. MCCH searched for land for several years that would allow for more dense multi-unit housing and found a site owned by Carl and Doris Clapp off Grassy Pond.
Finding the land was just the beginning. This would be the first multifamily development in the town. The committee then had to go in front of the Town of Harwich’s Planning Board and Town Meeting to get the project endorsed by the town. The project
was endorsed, and construction began on Pine Oaks Village One, located on a 30-acre site off Bank Street at 61 John Nelson Way in Harwich. This phase consisted of 60 apartments and was opened in 1980. The second phase was Pine Oaks Village II, which opened in 1990, providing an additional 38 units on the John Nelson Way property.
In February 2003, Pine Oaks Village III opened, with 65 apartments located on a 12-acre site off Oak Street at 300 Leighton’s Lane in Harwich. This parcel was acquired from the Town of Harwich.
To live in Pine Oaks One, II and III, you must be 62 years of age or older and have an annual income below 50% of the area median income for your household size. Pine Oaks Village One and II accept applicants of any age who are handicapped or disabled. However, at Pine Oaks One a qualified elderly applicant (62 or older) would be placed before a non-elderly disabled person. At Pine Oaks II, there is a preference that applies to individuals displaced by government actions. The rental subsidy assistance means that residents pay only 30% of their income in rent.
These units represent 49% of the Town of Harwich’s affordable housing stock. The purchase of the land and construction of these properties was made possible through the Rural Development Assistance Program of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (formally Farmers Home Administration), HUD, Massachusetts Community Develop-
ment Assistance Corporation, and Cape Cod Commission.
It was important to MCCH that Pine Oaks Village be a community for its residents. Each property has a clubhouse, personal gardening spaces, farmer’s porches, patios, and beautiful manicured grounds and landscaping. Each of these quaint and comfortable apartments is approximately 600 square feet in size. The day-to-day management and the processing of all applications is handed by property management experts HallKeen. There is normally a waiting list of 150 or more people for Pine Oaks Village, and on average an apartment becomes available every two months.
In 2023, Mid-Cape Church Homes Inc., a 501(c)(3) organization, decided to rebrand itself as Pine Oaks Village Homes to better depict the organization’s connection to the community.
Pine Oaks Village Homes is focused on its mission providing Cape Cod seniors with exceptional, affordable housing in a campusstyle setting. The Pine Oaks Village Homes Board meets monthly in their office at Albro House in Harwich Center. They monitor the management of their current properties and are always on the lookout for new parcels of land to create more affordable housing for the town of Harwich.

Specialmemories
bring a family together in Harwich
No matter your age, Harwich holds special memories – especially for a family that celebrates and connects here for generations. Emme Drummond and her sister Bella share fond memories of their time visiting their grandparents in Harwich, whether it is building sandcastles or riding the waves at Red River Beach with a boogie board from Dr. Gravity’s. There are so many memorable moments, echoed by their father, Scott Drummond.
On their last annual trip to Harwich in June 2022, the family traveled to South Harwich to celebrate Father’s Day with her grandparents, Hugh and Lynne Drummond, as they typically do each year. While here, her uncle Greg Kirby invited Emme, along with siblings Bella, Christina, Jamie, and Jeanie, to go fishing with him in Nantucket Sound, as Greg has a boat moored at Allen Harbor Marina.
Emme wasn’t into fishing until a few years ago, and on this trip, she remembers one cast being extremely heavy to reel in, and it took 10 minutes to bring in the catch. That was because Emme had caught a 30-inch striped bass weighing around 12 pounds. Bella remembers Emme sticking her entire hands right in the mouth of the fish,
saying, “She has no fear.” This was Emme’s second time fishing and the first fish she ever caught.
The determination and drive Emme showed during that fishing trip are serving her well. She is currently a junior at University of Connecticut – and she also recently completed Basic Training for the Air Force National Guard at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas.
Their fishing trip was definitely the highlight of that visit, and there’s lots more they love about this community. Some of
the Drummond girls’ favorite things to do in Harwich include heading to Schoolhouse Ice Cream for a sweet treat, getting fish and chips at Brax Landing, and shopping at Sativa. Bella has been a big fan of Harwich Junior Theatre programs and enjoys visiting the library and checking out movies. Dad Scott adds that they enjoy biking and love stopping at the First Congregational graveyard, as they find it peaceful and intriguing.
Every trip to Harwich is an opportunity for the Drummond family to make memories that they will cherish until the next visit, and well beyond.

25 YEARS FOR THE DUFFY HEALTH CENTER
– In 2022, Duff y Health Center celebrated the 25th anniversary of its incorporation as a nonprofit organization. Duff y is a Federally Qualified Community Health Center based in Hyannis, with a specific designation to serve individuals who are experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness across Cape Cod. Duff y was born out of a "clinic in the closet" at what was then the NOAH Shelter, run by Housing Assistance Corporation − today it is St. Joseph House, managed by Catholic Social Services. What began as a small weekly clinic providing first aid and basic care evolved over the years into the Duff y Health Center we see today: a sophisticated community health center providing equitable, integrated primary health care and support services (including behavioral health, treatment for substance use disorders, case management, and spiritual care) to people experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness on Cape Cod. The Duff y team improves the quality of life for vulnerable and marginalized populations in our region through community collaborations, leadership, and advocacy.

AT AGWAY
– The business was born in the 1960s in Northboro, Massachusetts, when Roger Wile, a poultry and cattle farmer, opened the family’s first farm and feed store. That original Agway store quickly became an iconic landmark in Northboro due to the enormous rooster statue that graced the parking lot. The store was eventually passed down to son Peter and his wife Susan, who in 1993 relocated to Cape Cod and opened the Agway of Cape Cod location Orleans. They soon expanded with the opening of stores in Chatham and Dennis, which today stands as the flagship location and company headquarters. Agway offers a wide array of lawn, garden, pet, farm, and nursery products and plants. Since 1993, Agway of Cape Cod has been dedicated to providing superior value and excellent customer service to the Cape community. The family roots that were instilled by Roger in the ’60s have remained the driving principles. Peter and Susan’s son Josh started his career early by loading cars with soils and mulch after school. Their daughter Jessica’s first job was deadheading geraniums in the nursery. Both children went on to larger roles, each working their way up the ranks and filling just about every position from warehouse assistant to cashier to store manager along the way. In 2017, they officially assumed ownership roles, marking the 3rd generation of family tenure.
50 AND DELICIOUS − Nikki and GOOD TIMES ICE CREAM OF CAPE COD have been traipsing through neighborhoods, beaches, and parking lots ringing the bell, calling out to children of all ages, who run up to the truck and pick their favorite from a variety of popular ice cream treats. WalkingMiss Daisy
Enjoy this hometown pup’s travel log exploring Harwich and its Seven Villages
Miss Daisy is the Yorkie owned by the Harwich Chamber of Commerce Executive Director, and is a longtime fixture around town. She came to Cyndi Williams as a rescue puppy when she was 4 months old, and she is now 9 years old. She loves exploring all Harwich has to offer – both for the residents of Harwich all year-round and visitors who come during their favorite time of the year, be that summer or the shoulder seasons.
Miss Daisy invites you to come by her mom’s office at the Harwich Chamber of Commerce and pick up your little Miss Daisy cut-out – then take her around town while you explore and discover hidden favorites and hot spots. Take a photo of your very own Miss Daisy around Harwich and send it to cyndi@harwichcc.com – it just might be featured on the Chamber’s social media!
If you are lucky, you may even catch Miss Daisy herself hanging out and greeting people at the Harwich Information Center.
Throughout the year, Miss Daisy loves to explore Harwich. In the winter, Miss Daisy and all her canine friends can visit the beaches in town as long as they are on a leash. Even those pups who are not a fan of the cold water love being able to sniff the sand and stretch their legs. In the spring, Miss Daisy and her mom stroll through Agway of
Cape (with locations in Chatham, Dennis or Orleans), where she reminds mom to pick up a supply of treats for her and her two sisters at home, Miss Harley and Miss Lee. During the summer, Daisy loves to be outside, of course. A favorite outing is traipsing through the streets of Harwich Port at the Wednesday Night Music Strolls, where she meets lots of other dogs and gets pets from many adoring visitors. The fall just might be Daisy’s favorite time of the year. It’s a great season to enjoy the many beautiful walking trails throughout Harwich’s Seven Villages. Check with the Harwich Conservation Trust for a complete map of all the lovely locales to explore.
If you are out and about in Harwich, with or without your furry friends, here are a few recommendations from Miss Daisy’s travel log:
• VISIT a Harwich Mariners Game, where you can cheer on the nation’s best collegiate baseball players, and maybe even get a hot dog!
• SETTLE IN at Brooks Park for an outdoor concert by the Harwich Town Band
• TAKE A LONG WALK along the Bike Trail or one of the many Conservation Trails
• STOP BY the Farmers Market on Thursday afternoons for fresh, local produce, baked goods, and more
Pick up your little Miss Daisy cutout – then take her around town while you explore and discover hidden favorites and hot spots.
• EXPLORE the Cape Cod Lavender Farm, with fields of homegrown lavender plants, fairy houses tucked into trees, and even a shop with a variety of lavender-themed goodies
• A PERFECT ENDING is with some sweet treats at Schoolhouse Ice Cream, where the human people can choose from a variety of options, and the pups can even get a Doggie Ice Cream Cup!
If you’re looking for more ideas of more things to discover in the Seven Villages of Harwich, stop in the Harwich Chamber for lots of ideas – and a snuggle with Miss Daisy!
