HARWICH
sitting pretty at Cape Cod Beach Chair
J
ustin Labdon dreamed about making Harwich his home, and making a living here as well. In 2002 he did just that, by launching the now-famous Cape Cod Beach Chair Company.
At the time, when the company he worked for in Boston downsized, Justin wanted to come up with that next big thing. With a background in sales and marketing, he put his creativity to work. As he was sitting in his faded, bent beach chair on his rooftop in Boston’s North End, he thought, “Someone really needs to make nicer beach chairs.” Justin was from Cape Cod and a real beach lover, so he knew how important a good beach chair was. That line of thinking led to his next big thing -- the Cape Cod Beach Chair. Justin, his wife Jill, and dog Brewster all headed back to Cape Cod -- the place he loved and where they would create what has become an internationally known and recognized beach chair. When they first started the company, Justin made each frame by hand in his garage and would sew the seat cushions in his basement office. Like many startup businesses, he did it all -- even driving to the local UPS store to ship each handmade beach chair. His innovative idea has taken him from that Boston rooftop to being featured on the Today Show, in Men’s Journal and New York Magazine, and as the word got out about the fabulous Cape Cod Beach Chair, even to such exotic locations as the Caribbean, Hawaii, Europe, and Japan. The thriving business soon needed more space than the basement of their home. As they looked for the perfect spot to continue to create, manufacture, and sell this famous chair, they found just that in Harwich in the form of a 130-year-old, 5,200-square-foot historic antique barn known locally as the "Cooperage." The sprawling 8

building is inviting, colorful, and the ideal home for Cape Cod’s premier beach outfitter. The large facility includes an airy loft for fabric cutting and sewing, a woodshop complete with a new state-of-the-art CNC woodworking machine, an embroidery zone with three commercial embroidery machines, and an assembly and packaging room. One of the wonderful things that makes Cape Cod Beach Chair stand apart is that most of their chairs are custom-assembled on-site as orders are received, using a mix of parts produced both in-house and by their trusted suppliers. Their advanced manufacturing processes and established supply

chain enables them to make both short and large runs of chairs as needed. Cape Cod Beach Chair sells thousands of chairs every year and the company is constantly recognized for the quality and design of their chairs. Their goal is to consistently deliver chairs of superior design, craftsmanship, and materials. Cape Cod Beach Chair’s iconic wooden beach chair offers a classic style, as its natural beauty maximizes a coastal lifestyle and beach experience. The rich wood is combined with premium Sunbrella and Outdura canvas seats in fabulous classic colors, bold stripes, stylish patterns, or genuine sailcloth, which offers luxurious comfort and relaxation. The hard wood used is a rugged and durable alternative to the flimsy aluminum and mesh chairs that often break or bend with minimal use. In addition to the world-renowned chairs, they also offer a growing assortment of Cape Cod Beach Chair logo apparel and accessories, beach games and kites, monogrammable totes and towels, resort jewelry, Maui Jim sunglasses, stand-up paddleboards, YETI and IceMule coolers, sandals, fashionable sun hats, beach house decor, beach cruiser bikes, and much, much more. Before you hit the beach, be sure to check out Cape Cod Beach Chair for everything you need to enjoy a day on the beautiful shores of Harwich. At their workshop you can purchase a pre-made chair from their showroom or custom order one with personalization. You can also pre-order chairs in advance online or over the phone to pick up at the store.

At A. Elmer Crowell Barn you’ll explore the story of the famed Harwich bird carver at his reconstructed barn on the grounds of Brooks Academy Museum. The museum recently announced a brand-new permanent exhibit about the life and work of A. Elmer Crowell, which includes actual video footage of Elmer in his workshop. Visitors can experience the actual workshop of the world-famous carver, furnished

Pilgrim Masonic Lodge embodies the spirit of community, as this group of men is part of a worldwide organization devoted to service. The Pilgrim Lodge exemplifies that mission through its generosity, providing local schools with supplies, laptops, and coats, supporting the community through
the Hometown Parade, and donating the tree for the annual Christmas tree lighting. Have you ever driven by and admired the building on the corner of Bank Street and Parallel Street? That is the Winstead Inn, with 15 whimsically named and creatively decorated guest rooms. Many include four-poster beds, a private terrace or gasoperated fireplace, or both. This Harwich inn is just the perfect size: small enough to offer an intimate experience, and with spacious grounds, a magnificent saltwater pool, and a great room for socializing, it’s large enough to feel like a true resort.
➢ Now we head down Bank Street to our next stop, the village of Harwich Port.

There is a trained naturalist on board who narrates the tour. Ed Lilley Photographer shares images of Harwich Port then and now, with his photography hanging in many homes and businesses -- including the Harwich
Chamber of Commerce Information Center. Ed and his wife Sue also run the Art Gallery at 820 Main, where you can find many works by resident artists. Maybe you remember Bonatt’s Bakery, home of the Meltaway – today you can enjoy Seagull’s Ice Cream & Soda Fountain in that location. Or maybe you recall dinners at the Sword and Shield Restaurant -- now you can find a great book at Below the Brine Bookstore, a gift at Snow Goose Shop, or dine at Three Monkeys and Mad Minnow Bar and Kitchen in the same spot. Come and make your own memories in Harwich Port.
➢ Next, we are off to North Harwich,

NORTH HARWICH Richness and stability The Hall Family continues into the next generations sharing the joys of the Cranberry Bog Industry and promise there is more to come.
In North Harwich, the cranberry industry plays a large role in the village’s history. Although cranberry cultivation began in Dennis in 1816, Henry Hall turned it into a large-scale commercial industry in Harwich, and with the Herring River and abundance of fresh water ponds and meadows, North Harwich was the ideal place to expand and cultivate. Several local families ventured into the

industry, with familiar names such as Hall, Robbins, Cahoon, Chase, Ryder, Kelly, Nickerson, Eldredge, Crowell, and Thacher. Each fall at that time, the local schools were delayed until after the harvest so that all of the family members could be present to help. As the industry began to grow, large investors came to the Cape and began to purchase the small family bogs and turn them into large commercial entities.
Even with a decline the Halls will keep the bogs going. Many generations of the Hall family have joined the North Harwich cranberry bogs, continuing today with the 8th generation -- Benjamin A. Hall and Nicholas J. Hall. The Halls have a tremendous amount of history in the Town of Harwich and the cranberry industry. There is more to come from the Halls Cape Cod Cranberries!
PLEASANT LAKE Even our four-legged friends enjoy the good life in Harwich. At Sandcastle Doggie Playcare, they offer fun, interactive playcare all year long. In 2014, veterinarian Dr. Bellingham and dog trainer and shelter manager Debbie Mag teamed up to create a program to improve the lives of dogs, addressing not only the physical need for exercise and socialization for your pet, but also mental stimulation and interaction. Using rewards and positive reinforcement, dogs interact with their team to play games, work on puzzles, and increase responsive behaviors.
➢
Down the road is our only village without the word Harwich in its name, Pleasant Lake.
Balance and vitality Next to the Cape Cod Rail Trail, at the General Store, home to Pizza Shark you can grab good eats after a day of adventures
This special village is bordered by water and offers lots of natural beauty. The village of Pleasant Lake is situated in a scenic area bordered by Long Pond, Hinckley’s Pond (sometimes called Pleasant Lake), and Seymour Pond. A peaceful, area of cranberry bogs and homes, it has wonderful access to swimming, fishing, and kayaking on its lovely large ponds. Long Pond, the Cape's largest lake and larg-

Briana and her husband Jay took over the business from her father in 2004. Also part of the team is head designer Enid Bailey, who joined their team in 1997. Together they have grown the business while keeping that old-fashioned country store feeling. Just down the street a bit is the offices of the Harwich Conservations Trust, which has been preserving local land since 1988. Started by concerned volunteers who wanted to make sure the fragile land
was protected, the group protects hundreds of acres via land donations, conservation restrictions, and purchasing land. As the Harwich Conservation Trust continues to preserve land, they also strive to educate the community, and their preserved land reach is throughout the seven villages of Harwich

WEST HARWICH Spirit and drive left: At Fishaye Trading Company fish and art come together to make unique home decor and accessories. right: For 70 years strolling through Yankee Doodle is an adventure and delight of country home accessories.
The village of West Harwich is working to keep its charm alive, as both residents and businesses continue to highlight the area’s history. The 1870 Captain Doane home on Route 28 in West Harwich is being transformed into what will be The Rival Bed & Breakfast, opening next summer. Owners Chelsea Nicolas and Jason Stohmaier are combining their love for history with the
drive to restore the building and bring it back to life. Further up Route 28 is Fishaye Trading Company, a unique décor shop. Fishaye started when owner John Doherty, an angler and an artist, was removing the day’s catch from his boat. One of the fish left an imprint on the deck and caught his eye. From that moment, he began to experiment with paint, ink, and fish.
For 70 years at Yankee Doodle, customers have always found something of interest. They offer wonderful country accessories and decor in wood – stained and unfinished – and more. Visit this quintessential Cape Cod shop – it’s an experience! Keeping our history and culture alive throughout our seven villages is what continues to make Harwich a unique and special place.

I
t first took a special group of visionaries in the late 1960s who had a dream that a regional vocational technical high school was needed that would serve 12 towns, from Mashpee to Provincetown. Cape Cod Regional Technical High School, located in Harwich, was established in 1975 as the fulfillment of that dream. A sand pit located at 351 Pleasant Lake Avenue would become the home to the Cape Cod Regional Technical High School. That sand pit, along with most of the land for the school, was provided by Harwich’s James Marceline to the group at an extremely discounted price. Marceline used his knowledge to help the Cape Tech school project by researching and clearing titles to many of the lots with unknown owners that surrounded his land. Like the others in the original group of founders, Marceline was extremely instrumental in the establishment of Cape Tech. An early advocate for the creation of the tech school in Harwich, Leo Cakounes, recalls, “Jimmy took pride in education, it 22

In order to provide the most up-to-date education in these technical areas, Cape Tech built a brand-new building in recent years, opening in fall 2021.
In the new school building, the programs all have their own academies and the school has evolved from the original vision of a hands-on technical vocational school of 1975 school to the high-tech up-to-date school of today. Each academy teaches the necessary workforce skills to the students, who then in turn offer what they have learned in their career path to the community as a needed service, in fields such as auto repair, dental hygiene, and cosmetology. At the ribbon-cutting and open house ceremony for the new Cape Tech building, School Superintendent Bob Sanborn reflected on the privilege of working with founders and founding school committee members Ann Williams and Peter Nyberg, as well as amazing people like Joan Bentinck-Smith and Paul Sullivan who were in the audience. The ceremony was an amazing day filled with students, local community members, and state and national dignitaries. Sanborn explained that he couldn’t have gotten the project done without the amazing the Cape and Islands delegation past and present, recognizing

each by first name: Sarah, Julian, Tim, Kip, and. He also highlighted Sarah Peake getting him into a meeting with Alice Peisch, the state education committee co-chair who helped put the $5 million school project over the top. During his speech Sanborn noted, “There wouldn’t be a Cape Cod Tech and we wouldn’t be talking about a new Cape Cod Tech in 2020 without James Marceline,” Superintendent Robert Sanborn acknowledged that Marceline saw the need for computers nearly 20 years ago and took the initiative to call a Special Town Meeting to convince voters of the need to look to the future in education. The computer technology program in the Harwich school system would not have received such a sound footing without him.

ARTS & CULTURE
Preserving and expanding arts and culture in Harwich
Band North Country at the Harwich Chamber of Commerce’s Cultural Center Prelude to Art Week Showcase at 204 Sisson Road
A
s we continue toward the designation of two Cultural Districts in Harwich from the Massachusetts Cultural Council, we explore what each of these unique districts will mean to us and how they will be a part of our community and beyond. The importance of arts and culture to our community cannot be overstated This process has been in the works for many years. In February 2016, the Massachusetts Cultural Council visited Harwich and shared with the Board of Selectmen that Harwich had been chosen as the only town in the commonwealth, along with five cities, to enter into the Cultural Compact. This was a tremendous honor in its own right, yet Harwich is going one step further. Due to the impressive amount of arts and culture activities happening in town, Harwich is pursuing two Cultural Districts, one in Harwich Center and the second in Harwich Port. When the state officials were here they made it clear that the state rarely recommends that towns establish more than one district at a time, but they felt that Harwich has the necessary energy and commitment. Economic development goes hand and hand with cultural districts, as it brings additional visitors, businesses, and revenues to a town. Additionally, a Cultural District is about 26

defining the character of the community, as the artists are telling the community’s story. The Harwich Cultural Center building, located at 204 Sisson Road, is a major part of the efforts to foster a cultural economy in town, which includes the state designation of these two Cultural Districts in Harwich.
Harwich Center Cultural District The proposed Harwich Center Cultural District starts at 204 Sisson Road and ends at Whitehouse Field. This district is “navigable” as we continue to develop its walking components, which will be shared through maps and wayfaring signage highlighting where our cultural assets can be found. One highlight is the repurposing of the building at 204 Sisson Road, which is the Harwich Cultural Center. You will find within this building 24 painters, 4 writers, 6 potters, 3+ photographers, a printer, a carver, a calligrapher, 5 online entrepreneurs, a gallery owner, 7 private instructors, 5 textile/jewelry makers, 5 Pre-K-12 teachers, 4 college professors, 2 nonprofits and 8+ makers, as well as Stitchology, where young students can learn to sew. During the pandemic, the Cape Cod Makers, located in the Harwich Cultural Center, were asked by Cape Cod Healthcare

Throughout the season, local artists, crafters, and makers setup shop in the Seaside Marketplace Artisan Shacks in the Harwich Port Cultural District. to make 1,750 mask clips for KN95 masks to allow for a better fit and more comfortable use for healthcare workers. Additionally, the Cape Cod Makers and their team of 80 volunteers produced, 3D printed, assembled, and donated 5,000 face shields to Cape Cod Healthcare. As we travel through the navigable Harwich Center Cultural District, you can enjoy such features as Brooks Academy, Elmer Crowell Barn, First Congregational Church, Brooks Free Library, Pilgrim Masonic Lodge, Brooks Park, and the Cape Cod Lavender Farm. From the economic development standpoint, other additions to Harwich Center are The Seal Pub & Café and the new Firefly Boutique. We will look to the historic district and historical commission to map the historic properties throughout the district, which will be used as another asset to the Cultural District. There will be many district partners, which are cultural facilities on the periphery of the district that can also be identified as assets to the district. Our second Cultural District is special because it is connected to the Harwich Center Cultural District by Bank Street, so we can walk to the Harwich Port Cultural District or travel by car and park at the Harwich Chamber of Commerce and venture out along Route 28 and explore. 28

Cultural districts drive economic growth and strengthen local character. Harwich Center and Harwich Port Cultural Districts will connect two villages while supporting arts and culture.
Harwich Port Cultural District This proposed district will start at the 802 Main Gallery and make its way along Route 28 ending at Cross Rip Gallery. The Harwich Port Cultural District is unique in that it brings together many industries that depict a variety of businesses, artists, and cultural activities -- all adding to the ever-growing vibrancy of the village. As art means many things to people, in Harwich Port some may consider the many restaurants and their talented culinary teams to
be artists, as they create their own spin on local fare. From barbecue, seafood, and comfort food with a twist, to longtime favorite waterfront restaurant Brax Landing -and let us not forget five popular ice cream shops -- there is something for every palate. Speaking of water, Saquatucket Harbor is home to charter fishing boats, the ferry to Nantucket, Dockside Café, and the Seaside Marketplace Artisan Shacks. At the Artisan Shacks, every week throughout the summer you can explore the talent of local artists, crafters, and makers, and purchase the works of these talented artisans. om and Trish Kennedy have owned businesses in Harwich for many years, and during all that time, they have greatly contributed to the vibrancy and economic growth of our community, both as entrepreneurs and as philanthropists. In each of their Harwich businesses, first BackOffice Associates and more recently Zudy, their platform and vision have added to the stability of many local smaller businesses and organizations. It is through these partnerships the Kennedys have forged that so many have succeeded and will continue to benefit. Their most recent venture, Zudy, is a digital transformation company with a no-code platform known as Vinyl. Vinyl’s patented technology merges mobile and web, enabling enterprises to build highly configurable applications in less time. Using Vinyl, organizations can dramatically increase the number of new mobile/web applications they can build, according to the company. After the Kennedys sold BackOffice Associates and then launched Zudy in the same building in Route 28 in South Har34

wich, they held an open house for the new endeavor. Board of Selectmen Chairman Michael MacAskill recalls their open house in 2017 as a great day and noted that it is thrilling when a local business announces it is thriving and expanding. Time and time again, under the leadership of the Kennedys, Harwich proves to be an area where innovation happens. As successful entrepreneurs and business owners, the Kennedys have been involved in organizations that echo their desire to improve the quality of life for their neighbors on Cape Cod. In 2019, the Philanthropy Partners of Cape Cod recognized Tom and Trish Kennedy as Outstanding Philanthropists of the Year. The Kennedys had recently made a pledge of $1 million to Outer Cape Health Services’ capital campaign toward the opening of a new community health center in Harwich Port. Their gift was the largest private donation in the history of Outer Cape Health Services. It is the Kennedys’ belief that quality and reliable healthcare should be available to all in need, and their generosity to this local healthcare facility supports that.
In 2019 Philanthropy Partners of Cape Cod named Tom and Trish Kennedy, “Outstanding Philanthropists of the Year” at the annual Philanthropy Day held in Hyannis. The name Zudy is very familiar to many New England Patriots fans who watch post-game press conferences where the company’s logo is prominently displayed on a backdrop. Clients of Zudy include the Kraft Group and New England Patriots. Recently, Trish Kennedy made Patriots owner Bob Kraft aware of the many great STEM programs that our local Cape Cod Commu-

Tom and Trish displaying the importance of making time for laughter and fun both in life and business. To help their community continue to thrive even amid a pandemic, the team at Zudy devised a way to provide specialized COVID-19 response tools, which emphasize workforce protection and digitizing business for increased remote capability, including communications, document execution, and engagement with customers. Zudy’s applications also give companies the ability to re-vamp their manufacturing processes, which allows for high-demand production of such items as protective medical masks. Zudy also partnered with many large pharmaceutical and life sciences companies to arrange for low-cost assistance so they could empower their teams to enable fast responses to the global crisis. The Kennedys -- and their special teams -- continue to give back and find ways to collaborate for the good of their community and beyond. The Harwich Chamber of Commerce is extremely proud to have such dynamic entrepreneurs, friends, and partners as Tom and Trish Kennedy and their cutting-edge company, Zudy, here in Harwich. We look forward to continued partnership in growing the economic development of Harwich together.

HARWICH
New and Noteworthy
Welcome to the neighborhood BELOW THE BRINE BOOKSHOP was launched in 2021 by Harwich native Kristen Young, with the idea of creating a bright, welcoming space where locals and visitors could browse for books and strike up conversations about literature. Despite the tiny footprint, she has created a collection of titles that speaks to readers of all ages, with all sorts of interests. All of the tables and shelving were handmade by Kristen's husband, Joe, using wood he reclaimed while remodeling their antique Harwich Port home, located a short walk away from Below the Brine. The bookstore takes its name from the poem The World Below the Brine by Walt Whitman, which describes the otherworldliness that exists below the ocean's surface, and how viewing things from a new perspective can fundamentally change how we contemplate the world around us – much like when you crack open a good book. The shop also offers journals, greeting cards, and notebooks, many of which are locally made. Watch their website for regularly hosted author events.
DUNE JEWELRY – Holly Daniels Christensen and Kellie Quinn met in Kindergarten and today they are designing jewelry together at Dune Jewelry. Holly first launched the business in 2010 while 46 Harwich MAGAZINE • 2022
Kellie raised three boys. Over the years, Kellie had worked on jewelry design and offered artistic guidance along the way, but this year they decided it was time for her to officially join the Dune family – and Dune Harwich Port was born. Kellie worked diligently for months alongside designer Kirsten Meyer of the Grey House in Harwich Port to create a beautiful, coastal chic space with clean lines that is quintessential Cape Cod. When you enter the shop, you’ll immediately be drawn to their incredible sandbank display. The sandbank installation showcases hundreds of sands and earth elements from around the world. Not only is the store beautiful, but it’s stocked with hundreds of designs from their extensive catalog. There are rings, earrings, necklaces, bracelets, home decor gifts, and more.
environment. Haberdash specializes in clothing and accessories that are stylish and environmentally friendly.
FIREFLY BOUTIQUE & MORE –After being a hairstylist for years, Jeannine Joseph dreamed of owning her own boutique. That dream became a reality in Firefly Boutique & More, located on Main Street in Harwich Center, downstairs from the Pilgrim Masonic Lodge. This colorful boutique adds style and fun with clothing, accessories, and --more – every day there is something new to see. The racks are full of fun, colorful tops and dresses, as well as accessories for you and your home.
Making changes LEXACO JEWELRY is expanding their shop HABERDASH CAPE COD is the newest addition to Harwich Port, joining their two other shops off-Cape in Hudson and Worcester. They are next door to Dune Jewelry and a short walk to all your favorite Harwich Port stops. New this year is the shed where you are sure to find something to jazz up your wardrobe. Come visit and grab a few cool, casual summer must-haves that are both easy to wear and easy on the
on the corner of Sea Street and Route 28 in Harwich Port. After they saw such success with unique jewelry made from nature and stunning pieces of art, they decided to expand next door. Visit with Lisa and Eddie the next time you are in Harwich Port and see what is happening at Lexaco.

Reaching milestones DUFFY’S HEALTH CENTER celebrates

Harwich MAGAZINE • 2022
25 years! This year, Duffy is celebrating the 25th anniversary since they officially incorporated as a nonprofit in the state of Massachusetts. This is a huge milestone! The success over the past 25 years (and even before that) is due in large part to the relationships they have created with their community, partner agencies, staff members, and most importantly, the individuals they serve. Time and again, Duffy will hear about the positive impact has had in the lives of those they take care of. Without fail, that impact can be traced directly back to the trusting relationships of the team has built. Over the next several months Duffy will be sharing stories of impact, hearing reflections from friends who have known Duffy since its earliest
days, and of course, looking forward to what is in store for Duffy Health Center's programs and services in the next 25 years.
MCPHEE ASSOCIATES celebrates 50 years! Defined by its reputation and long-lasting relationships, McPhee Associates has been an industry leader in design/build for years. Since 1972, they have maintained core values and quality craftsmanship that have made them a premier building company; one that respects its customers
and is passionate about their work. At age 25, founder Bob McPhee had a desire to build homes, and after a few short years of building duplexes, he was able to move into spec homes, quickly amassing a portfolio. His style preference was always a Cape with angles, roof breaks, and large chimneys to add character. It’s a family business and his son Rob, who runs the business today, speaks about his father fondly: “He was a hard worker, committed to the success of the business and taking care of his customers and family.” From his father, Rob learned the importance of building good relationships, earning the trust of those you work for and always doing the right thing. You are working with what will be, for the most part, the largest, single investment [people] ever make … it’s someone’s home, where families are made, memories are made.” For 50 years, McPhee builds have been home to lots of memories. As the company looks ahead, “We are excited for what the future holds and how the next 50 years unfold,” says Rob.

a day at the
Harwich’s beaches and ponds offer an escape and memories to last a lifetime…
W
ith 21 saltwater and freshwater beaches, the shores of Harwich offer something for everyone. Harwich’s many Nantucket Sound ocean beaches provide gently rolling waves, soft sand, seashells to discover, and plenty of room for a game of football in the sand. Meanwhile, with more than a dozen freshwater ponds, including Long Pond, the Cape’s largest lake, you’ll never lack for fun in the sun, or an escape of relaxation. Swimming, collecting treasure, relaxing in the sun, nature walks…. Harwich’s premier location offers many ways to enjoy the beaches of Cape Cod. Nantucket Sound, the triangular area between Cape Cod, Nantucket, and Martha’s Vineyard in the Atlantic Ocean, is a diverse marine habitat encompassing the open sea as well as salt marshes with warm-water beaches. The Sound temperatures approach 75 degrees in the summer due to being shielded from the southward flowing Newfoundland current. The fall weather is mild, keeping the waters warm longer – making these months glorious beach-going times.
Daisy can’t go, but she wants to remind you to get your beach sticker! For information on purchasing beach stickers and beach parking, see next page>>
Many memories have been made at the beach – family days spent frolicking in the sand and waves, long walks along stone jetties, evenings spent watching the sun set on the horizon. Each of Harwich’s beaches has its own distinct personality – why not visit them all to see which best fits your mood? Some of the most popular ocean beaches include Red River Beach, Bank Street Beach, and Earle Road Beach. Notable freshwater beaches include Long Pond and Sand Pond. The beach isn’t just for swimming and sunning, either! Play catch, fly a kite, practice beach yoga, toss a Frisbee, or just relax with a book and enjoy the gorgeous view.

The many ponds in town offer clean, family-friendly spots for swimming, fish-
ing, paddle boarding, and, of course, boating. There are two ramps on Long Pond. Motorboats and waterskiing are allowed on most bodies of water, while jet-skis are limited to ocean waters. Rules of the waterways and boat trailer stickers can be obtained at the Harbormaster’s Office. There are varying amenities at the different harbors and launches, so be sure to check before you go. There is no shortage of options in Harwich – there are dozens of different venues where you can enjoy fun in the sun, including 11 miles of tidal shoreline along Nantucket Sound and Pleasant Bay and numerous freshwater beaches. You can spend one day frolicking in the salt water at an ocean beach, and the next at a freshwater pond enjoying a cool, refreshing dip. For a full list of beaches and details on beach stickers and amenities, see the sidebar below.

COMMUNITY
The heartof the community for 275 years
N
o matter which direction you are coming from, when you enter Harwich Center you will see the tall white steeple rising up through the trees. The First Congregational Church in Harwich Center has long been part of the heart of Harwich Center, and is now celebrating a milestone – its 275th anniversary. The charming steeple has sat above the trees since 1854, when it was built as an addition to the simple meetinghouse that was originally built in 1832. The First Congregational Church was started back in 1747 by a small group of men and the new minister Edward Pell who came together to organize the church and to pledge the Congregational Way. The Congregational Way is the belief in diversity and the opportunities in learning from each other and growing in faith. During its early beginnings, there were a few meetinghouses – the first meetinghouse was humble and very simple built, with 12 pews and benches. The second meetinghouse was built in 1792 and only lasted 40 years, when it was then replaced by a third meetinghouse.
there have been changes to the church in Harwich Center, including remodeling additions, while also ensuring that the church still conveys in the spirit and sentiment of its historic past.
SCHEDULE OF ANNIVERSARY EVENTS
A hundred years ago, there was a ladies Sewing Circle that had a chapel built for religious and social functions. Today, we know this building as the Parish House, which is located across the street from the main church. The parsonage was donated by Sarah Brooks in 1899 and has been renovated into space for offices and other activities.
Sunday, June 12 at 10:30 a.m. Music Sunday
Today the church has a wonderful mix of longtime members and newcomers. Many of its members are retired from all over the country, and is also home to many young families. The church is very welcoming and is continually adding activities for all ages. To commemorate the celebration of its 275th anniversary in 2022, the First Congregational Church of Harwich has many activities planned in the Heart of Harwich.
Saturday, August 13 – from 3 to 5 p.m. 275th Strawberry Social with the Sound Dunes Swing Ensemble
June 1 thru August 1 Photo Contest: winners will be announced at the Anniversary Celebration on August 13
Sunday, June 26 at 3 p.m. Harwich Women’s Chorus Concert Sunday, July 10 after Worship “Ding-a-long” Concert & Luncheon with the Bell Choir in the Parish House Anniversary Celebration Weekend August 13 and 14
Sunday, August 14 275th Luncheon after Worship Service with concert by the Harwich Town Band Saturday, September 24 at 3 p.m. Ragtime Organ Concert with Marcia Hempel
Join in the celebrations to mark of 275 years of the First Congregational Church in Harwich Center!
An interesting fact is that the First Congregational Church in Harwich is connected to the first church in Plymouth, as their earliest members were from the Eastham congregation of people who moved there in 1644. Over the years since 1854, HarwichCC.com

Still Churning and Scooping After 26 Years!
MUSIC
Earth Junior will have you dancing and singing along with music from the 60s to today.
Meet Your Local Musicians
After trying out many styles of music along the way, Liam found his true passion in rockabilly. His spare four-piece drum kit supports the rockabilly music that he plays, and he has even fashioned a portable drum kit to fit inside a suitcase. He does all the setups himself — he says he is his own roadie.
H
ave you ever wondered what life is like for local musicians, balancing their passion for playing with making a living here in our community? We thought it would be fun to share with you the stories of some of your favorite songsters.
Liam Hogg According to Liam, the drummers get no love, they’re behind the kit while the guitar and vocals are up front and center — which he says is just fine with him. Liam has been pounding the skins in many local bands for over 35 years — nearly 25 of them have been with Earth Junior, performing New Wave covers, and 15 years with the Rip-It-Ups, an Outer Cape institution. For the last dozen years, he has provided a steady rockabilly beat for Sarah Swain and the Oh Boys. He was raised in Eastham, but he now lives in Harwich with his partner and two dogs. He took trumpet lessons as a kid, but he wasn’t a fan. Then a friend introduced him to drumming in the sixth grade. He says he tried it, and the rest is history.
He has developed an uncanny connection with upright bassist Ron Siegel of Sarah Swain and the Oh Boys. They know exactly what each other is thinking, and stops in the music will happen spontaneously. “We’re basically sharing a brain when we’re playing together.” What a lot of people don’t know is that Liam is also a great singer, he harmonizes like it’s nothing and will take a solo with the same poise that he puts into drumming — he sits up straight, eyes sparkle, and offers a smile like no one else.
Jodi North Birchall When thinking of Jodi, the word that comes to mind is captivating. By day, Jodi is a special education teacher who is a wizard in the classroom — she has fun with the students because she is so caring and passionate about helping each of her students grow and reach their full potential. Her energetic demeanor makes her the teacher she is, whether she is rallying the students for an event or teaching them in the classroom, she can capture her students’ attention

Jodi gave to her students at Nauset High School some great advice when alumna Meghan Trainor was coming for a visit: “Hard work, how you don’t give up your dreams, aim high, you’re going to struggle but keep going at it, and if you see it, you can achieve it.”
After Lazy Lightning came the band The Press, and they opened for bands such as the Del Fuegos and the Guess Who. After The Press came Earth Junior, which has been around since 1995 and currently is still featured on Wednesdays during the summer as part of the Harwich Chamber’s Port Summer Nights.

The Johns
During the daytime, you will find a hammer and nails in Colin’s hands as he has been remodeling houses for nearly 40 years — but his true passion is playing in local bands. He started playing on Cape when he was in high school with his first band, called The Atoms, then the band Off
Another Cape Cod favorite band, The Johns, was formed about 12 years ago by Colin and Mike McGrath (who played sax and keyboards in The Press). Then there is Pitchfork, which is an acoustic duo formed three years ago in which Colin pairs with outstanding vocalist Jennifer Falk. Colin
met Jen when he sat in on bass with her band at the time, Super Soulshine. Finally, Elmore Collins and the Counterfits is a fallback band for Colin. When he can’t book one of the three other bands he is in, he will find musicians from a list of about 20 local players to sit in with him, all of whom doing what they love: playing music.
The Ukeladies This band started as a uke jam in 2011, organized by a group of women ukulele enthusiasts. In 2013, a spinoff of this jam session decided to make it official and call themselves a band. Expect the unexpected when you come to a Ukeladies concert — they play an eclectic collection of folk, bluegrass, rock, blues, and Americana. The Ukeladies are Lois Hirshberg, Bea Gremlich, Diane Thayer, Pat Armstrong and Gregory Baird.

They get you up and dancing to the music you’ve grown up with. bottom right: The Johns have you feeling the beat and singing along to rock of the 70s and more. HarwichCC.com

Ukeladies – this eclectic group of ladies, and now a uke-lad, love their audience’s to have fun. Lois is a retired elementary guidance counselor and ceramic artist. When she retired, she looked to fill her time and found the ukulele. It was love at first sight. She is a founding member of the Ukeladies. Bea has been playing ukulele since growing up in Hawaii. She has been a member of the Ukeladies since 2013. She enjoys music, road cycling, and being on (or in) the water. By day, she is Executive Director of Advancement for the Cape Cod Healthcare Foundation. Diane is a retired middle school science teacher, busy grandma of two, and likes to carve wood and play music in her spare time. She joined the Ukeladies in 2013. Pat is a new retiree. She enjoys vegetable gardening, boating and fishing, singing with local groups, and helping preserve the early grave markers in Yarmouth’s Ancient Cemetery. She joined the Ukeladies three years ago. Gregory is a freelance writer living in Dennis who joined the Ukeladies as the band’s first “Uke-lad” three years ago. He’s also a member of the All Worn Out Jug Band. These musicians bring such joy to all of us, and throughout the year we can find them playing around Harwich and the Cape. Their passion for music flows through to the listeners — catch a performance and feel the beat!
