ourne is the first town visitors encounter when entering Barnstable Count y. It has the distinction of occupying most of the land through which the Cape Cod Canal flows. Whether traveling to the Cape on Route 3 or Route 495 to 25, visitors must pass through at least one of Bourne’s many villages. English colonists lived in this area as early as 1627. The first free enterprise in America was located near the west end of the land cut of the present Cape Cod

Canal. The Aptucxet Trading Post was situated on a piece of land between a creek and two rivers; the Manomet River connected with Massachusetts Bay, and the Monument River connected to a body of water that eventually reached the entrance of New York Harbor and the Hudson River. It was at this trading post that the Pilgrims traded goods with the Dutch colonies from the New York area. And it was here that the first currency in America was developed: it was called wampum and was made from capecodcanalchamber.org

purple parts of quahog shells. A replica of the Aptucxet Trading Post is situated off Shore Road in Bourne Village. In the 1880s, Bourne became an ideal location for manufacturing. Power was provided by windmills and water wheels, and raw manufacturing materials were available in the region. Finished products could be shipped out on trains or ships. One noteworthy company was the Keith Car Works of Sagamore, which built freight cars. It began work in 1826 and remained in operation for over 100 years. Many houses built by the company can still be seen on both sides of the east end of the Canal. As the large industrial centers in Massachusetts prospered, the state’s wealthy residents wanted to escape the cities and enjoy the country. They scouted the Cape Cod Canal Region and decided it was perfect for their needs. The cool ocean breezes, sandy beaches and wooded lands made it an ideal summer retreat for the whole family. Over the next few years, many elaborate and expensive summer homes were built in the area. President Grover Cleveland, Shakespearean actor Joseph Jefferson and Boston Globe founder Charles H. Taylor were a few of the region’s famous summer residents. The features that attracted people here over 100 years ago are still present today, including moderate year-round temperatures, sandy beaches with water temperatures conducive to water sports, abundant fishing and shell fishing locations, and wooded areas in which to observe and enjoy nature. It is an excellent region to use power and sailing vessels both large and small. No matter what your interests are, Bourne is the place to be for a day, a week, or a lifetime.

ncorporated in 1639, Sandwich is the oldest of the Cape towns. During the town’s first 100 years, the English settlers farmed the land and ran small coastal fishing enterprises. Sandwich was also an important stagecoach stop on the Old King’s

Highway (now Route 6A) from Boston to Provincetown; it quickly became a center for travel and tourism. Taverns and inns cropped up along the main street. Wealthy Boston travelers on business and vacation stayed at these establishments en route to other parts of

Cape Cod. The Fessenden Tavern (later called the Central House) was one of the most famous stops; it was noted for being the Patriot Headquarters before the Revolutionar y War and was later renamed for its most popular guest, Daniel Webster. Across town, Newcomb’s Tavern, served as the Patriot headquarters. In t he early 1800s, factories were started in t he region, taking advantage of t he national resources of land, waterpower and wood f uel. The Boston and Sandwich Glass Company was founded in 1825 and grew steadily over a 63-year period to employ 500 workers who created various t ypes of glassware. The company is best known for its pressed-glass items, which could be produced quickly, inexpensively and in large quantities for sale to middleclass shoppers desiring fine objects for t heir homes. The Boston and Sandwich Glass Company closed in 1888 after t he center of pressed-glass production shifted f rom New England to t he Midwest, where t he cost of glassmaking was less expensive. Today, glass made at t he Sandwich factor y is a highly prized antique collectible. The Sandwich Glass Museum, located across f rom t he Grist Mill in t he center of Sandwich village, displays t housands of glass objects made at t he factor y during t he 19t h cent ur y. Museums in Sandwich, such as Hoxie House, Heritage Museums and Gardens, and Thornton Burgess, are windows to our past and give us a sense of what life was like in the early days of America.

areham was discovered in 1603 by Bart holomew Gosnold, an Englishman who sailed across t he Nort h Atlantic Ocean to explore t he East Coast of Nort h America. Gosnold named Cape Cod, Mart ha’s Vineyard, t he Elizabet han Islands, Cut t yhunk and Agawam— bet ter known as Wareham—as well as ot her local towns. In 1666, local t ribes sold Agawam to t he Plymout h Colony for grazing lands. The t ribes did not realize t he f ull extent of what t hey had signed; t he sale gave t he Pilgrims exclusive rights to Agawam. Early on, t he residents recognized t he importance of herring. Even in

Colonial times, st rict rules were set for how many herring could be caught. Because herring was a necessit y of life, catching and preser ving t he fish became a family affair. Oysters were anot her greatly sought after food found in t he local waters. Bog ore was discovered while digging in t he fields. This ore proved usef ul for making nails, farm implements and ironware. Many homesteads set up f urnaces and forges so t hat t hey could process t he ore. t hen harden and t urn to steel. This steel could be used to make st ronger nails. In 1819, t he first cut-nail factor y in t he region was started; many ot her nail companies soon followed. Only one nail company is still in existence: The Tremont Nail Company holds t he distinction of owning one of t he oldest operating indust rial buildings in America. It currently houses ECHO Elizabet h & Company Home Offerings selling locally-sourced and handmade artisanal and gifts, up-scaled home f urnishings, select antiques and vintage items. Realizing it’s historical significance, t he town has purchased t he propert y in order to ensure its preser vation. Overlooking t he calm waters of Buzzards Bay is t he pict uresque seaside village of Onset. Once a favored destination for Duke Ellington, Tommy Dorsey and Cab Calloway, t he village continues its fondness for t he Blues wit h its Annual Onset Blues Festival held each August. Today, Onset is a burgeoning vacation destination again, wit h t he resurgence of newly renovated Victorian mansions and cot tages t hat line t he sandy crescent-shaped beach. Wareham offers an exceptional location wit hin easy distance to t he Boston and Providence met ropolitan areas. All t he tourist amenities of t he Cape Cod area are available in Wareham. The town has over 54 miles of coastline enhanced by beaches, est uaries, rivers and communities.

Cape Cod Canal A History

The Cape Cod Canal—it’s the first thing visitors see when they come to Cape Cod and the last thing they see when they leave.

ow celebrating its 106th year of existence, this man-made structure epitomizes the region that it separates from the rest of the state. Part of what makes the canal so special is its connection to the people that cross paths with this body of water on a daily, weekly, monthly and annual basis. Perhaps no one is more familiar with the canal and its past than former Bourne Selectman Donald (Jerry) Ellis who spends his days as the superintendent of the Sagamore Cemetery, one of the most haunted places in all of Cape Cod. To find out why, one has to go back to 1909 when there was not even a canal. By that time, the planning and preparation to build a cut-through of Cape Cod was well underway and in June of that year the first shovels were planted in the ground by the project’s financier August Belmont II to ceremoniously kick-start the massive undertaking. In order for the project to be successful, there had to be major changes to the Cape’s landscape. Chief among those was the relocation of 17 bodies buried in the Bourne Cemetery and 45 bodies buried in the Emory Ellis Cemetery as both plots stood directly in the path where the canal was to be built.

The move was not looked upon kindly by Emory Ellis who stopped the building of the canal in 1909 “because he wanted a choice spot in the Sagamore Cemetery to move his family members to,” Donald Ellis said. “So when it came time to move everything, he sat in front of the cemetery with a shotgun and wouldn’t let anyone touch anything until he was satisfied his family got the right spot in the Sagamore Cemetery. He was an ornery obstructionist and a typical old Yankee, but he got what he wanted.” Or did he? When it came time to finally move the bodies there was a problem. The coffins were not properly aligned with the gravestones, leading to what Mr. Ellis believes are some troubled spirits that haunt the Sagamore Cemetery. It has made the cemetery, located roughly 200 yards from the canal, a popular locale for those interested in the paranormal. During his time caring for the grounds and its deceased inhabitants, Mr. Ellis said, he has reported eerie sensations—goose bumps, hair standing on the end of his arms, the smell of pungent cigar smoke and an intense pressure on his chest—that are indicative of a ghostly presence. Fellow Bourne resident Skip Barlow, president of the town’s historical society, agreed. capecodcanalchamber.org

10 Fun Facts About the Railroad Bridge The Art Deco railroad bridge that straddles the Cape Cod Canal looked great with its giant cruise ship accessory. The lift bridge at the west end of the canal is a big draw especially when it lowers for a train and then raises for boat traffic. The bridge underwent a massive rehabilitation from 2001-2003. Work included new paint, new counterweight cables, new operating and electrical system and rehabilitated sheaves.

As owner of Barlow’s Clam Shack across from the canal rest area in Bournedale, he sees firsthand the tourists who take advantage of “the biggest free recreation area in Southeastern Massachusetts.” These are people who take to the canal to walk, rollerblade, bike, fish and sunbathe. “The canal is used year round by tourists and locals alike,” he said. “About three million people use it for recreational purposes annually… It’s kind of a neat place and it’s free and easily accessible.” Not only is the canal a great place to people watch, he said, it is a prime spot for boating enthusiasts. “You can see almost any kind of boat go through there at any time of year,” Barlow said. “It is pretty cool if you like boats. I’m right out there checking it out because I really enjoy those things.” Among the more prominent boaters to travel through the canal were Phil Donahue and his wife Marlo Thomas in the 1990’s. “I was shocked by the size of their boat,” Bob King, the co-owner of Café Chew in Sandwich, recalled. “He drove it by himself. It was just him and Marlo. I asked him, ‘You can handle this by yourself?’ and he said, ‘Oh yeah.’ It was huge.”

King, his husband and business partner Tobin Wirt were invited onto the yacht which had been tied up for the evening at the Sandwich Boat Basin, adjacent to the canal. Just a few hours earlier Donahue and Thomas had dined at the Bee-hive Tavern, a Sandwich eatery that King and Wirt owned from 1992 to 2004. “After they had dinner of course they needed to get back to the boat and they asked if we could call them a taxi,” King said. “There was no taxi at the time so we offered to give them a ride. We gave them a nice tour of Sandwich… They enjoyed that. When we got to the boat they invited us on.” King’s other vivid memory of the canal was from his childhood when his father, an avid fisherman, would “terrify us about falling into the canal and that it would swallow you up. We couldn’t even put our toe into the water. He was afraid of the current.” Though illegal now, at one point taking a dip in the canal was commonplace, even after the Army Corps of Engineers took over control of the waterway in 1928. “We used to go swimming in it all the time,” said Wally Alden, who grew up in Sagamore and now lives in Buzzards Bay. ”

he National Marine Life Center (NMLC) is a proud member of the Cape Cod Regional Chamber of Commerce communit y. Founded in 1995, NMLC is an independent, non-profit organization whose mission is to rehabilitate and release stranded marine mammals and sea turtles in order to advance science and education in marine wildlife health and conservation. Cape Cod is a stranding hotspot. Hundreds of marine animals strand alive and in need of medical care every year. NMLC is addressing that need. Our core mission is to rehabilitate for release stranded sea turtles and seals. Through rehabilitation, we can help individual animals, learn more about marine animal species and wildlife disease, and share what we learn to promote ocean conservation. As of January 2022, NMLC has cared for close to 1,000 threatened, endangered, and/ or protected aquatic animals, including Kemp’s ridley, loggerhead and green sea turtles; along with Gray, Harbor, Harp and Hooded seals. Heritage is home to gems of the automotive world that celebrate America’s love of automobiles as well as technological innovation, featuring vehicles that convey excellence in restoration and historic significance. The Heritage Annual Auto Show (June 11; rain date: June 12), celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, and is a popular, family-friendly event that highlights antique and classic automobiles, hot rods, custom cars, and motorcycles in excellent original or restored condition. Throughout the season, Gearhead Garage nights (April 27, May 25, June 29, July 27, August 31, September 28) provide an exclusive peek at Heritage’s automobile collection in storage and give participants the chance to see these cars up close and to chat with curatorial staff and Auto Volunteers. Each event features two vehicles that will started up for the delight of program participants. Heritage’s focus on family-friendly fun also includes a series of Fourth Friday Food Truck Events (June 24, July 22, August 26, September 23), with an extra two and a half hours to enjoy the gardens, galleries, activities, and live music in the beautiful evening light. Activities in this special area change monthly. Wellness Week (September 9- 18) is a relatively new addition to the Heritage season. During this week long event, visitors are encouraged to discover ways to add wellness into their daily routines, with a particular emphasis on how nature can be a source of healing, relaxation, and inspiration. Adult and family focused selfguides, as well as the Garden Discovery Carts, encourage exploration of the gardens and offer fun activities that engage the senses. Fall activities include Cocktails for Cars (September 10) and the Sandwich Halloween Festival (October 21 and 22). Cocktails for Cars is a fundraising event that brings together the finest collector cars in the region for one spectacular evening of designer vehicles, tempting hors d’oeuvres, and refreshing drinks in a lush garden setting (tickets are required). The Sandwich Halloween Festival, jointly put on by students and parents from the Sandwich Public Schools, is the place to be for spooktacular family fun! Games, face painting, a DJ-ed dance party, haunted maze, and unlimited carousel rides make this annual event a must for all ages. To close out the season, Gardens Aglow (select nights, November 25- December 23), a treasured holiday family tradition, transforms the grounds with more than 250,000 holiday lights.
