Our Representation Continues THIS YEAR MARKS THE 70TH ANNIVERSARY of HBRACC, since being formed by

a small band of local builders. For nearly three quarters of a century, we have provided community, support, and guidance to our members and our industry as a whole. We expect to celebrate this milestone as an organization throughout this upcoming year. Growth of membership and the implementation of an industry-related workforce development program were our biggest goals of 2019. This year will be much of the same: continued support of the membership through advocacy of industry-related issues, growth as an organization, and implementation of our updated strategic plan. While the workforce development program is in its infancy stages, we are pleased to announce that six individuals have completed trade-focused classes and are seeking placement with local member companies for the spring/summer. As an organization that supports the efforts of essential businesses and services in Massachusetts, we must not forget to recognize the efforts put forth by the Baker-Polito Administration to push forward with the Housing Choice Initiative, which plans to put Massachusetts on a path to produce 135,000 new units of housing by 2025. As I write this, the Housing Choices Bill No. 3507 has advanced to the Ways and Means Committee. If passed with widespread bi-partisan support, this Bill looks to allow cities and towns to adopt by simple majority vote the following: smart growth zoning, reduced dimensional requirements, accessory dwelling units, and mixed-use by special permit. The BRICC Awards are back! This fall marks the return of one of our most sought after events that not only recognizes and celebrates excellence in our industry, but is a great way to connect with colleagues and friends. We recognize the challenges COVID-19 presents to our local economy and industry. It’s as important as ever, for the foreseeable future, that HBRACC commits resources necessary to aid in our local business so they can recover from this. Lastly, I would like to take a moment to recognize the efforts of our staff, who have seen us through these uncertain times. I am particularly proud of them, our association, and the community. Thank you,

Trevor Meyer President HBRACC

Leadership in These Times WHAT A STRANGE FEW MONTHS WE HAVE ALL EXPERIENCED.

We have gone from hearing about this strange new virus and how it was shutting down a major Chinese city, to seeing it expand throughout Europe and eventually spread across our great nation. We are now fully immersed in a global pandemic that has altered the way we live and work for the foreseeable future. Many of us began March wondering how, if at all, Covid-19 would affect our late winter ski getaways (a little insight into what I was worried about!). I never imagined we would be entering May wondering how the virus will now affect our summer plans and beyond. The uncertainty surrounding all future planning has been immense and a lot to bear for decision makers at all levels. As politicians rolled out closures of businesses around the country, many deemed homebuilding to be an essential function of our economy. Fortunately, when the closures inevitably made their way to Massachusetts, Governor Charlie Baker agreed that the production of housing and all the functions that go along with the production of housing were essential not just to our economy but to our society. The Baker administration has always been a great ally to our industry, and his commitment to housing production has become obvious over the past six weeks. As groups have popped up around the Commonwealth pressuring the administration to shutter all construction activity, our governor has remained strong in his commitment to the homebuilding industry. His clarifications to essential worker orders have made it clear to all that the Commonwealth understands how important housing is. Homes provide many of us with so much more than just shelter; they provide us all with a place to retreat to at the end of the day and a place in which to gather with loved ones to make life-lasting memories. We are fortunate to be able to continue providing the production of new homes to our communities. With the governor’s commitment to housing, we as an industry should feel a sense of responsibility to ensure we are operating in a safe manner. We all must continue to educate our workforce on how to safely navigate construction during

the pandemic. There are many simple steps we can all take to mitigate our employees’ and customers’ risk of exposure. The National Association of Home Builders has done a great job of providing guidance on job site safety and this information can be easily accessed at www.nahb.com. It is my hope that in the coming months we are able to start returning to the “normal” we all once knew, but until that happens we must remain vigilant in our commitment to safely building the homes our communities require. Please do your best to educate your employees, subs, vendors, and homeowners on the changes to how projects will be executed. If we all focus and remain committed to site safety, we should continue to operate successfully within our communities.

smart component in building: Electrochromic glass. This glass, used throughout the new Cape Cod 5 Headquarters on Route 132 in Hyannis, can automatically tint when the sun is hitting them directly to reduce glare. “Glare has always been a problem for productivity,” says Kurt Raber of Yarmouth Port-based Brown Lindquist Fenuccio Raber, lead designer on the project. “This allows you to let in sunlight when you want it and keep it out when you don’t.”

The technology can also make buildings more energy efficient. Sensors can increase air conditioning or heat in a particular room if the sun is or isn’t bearing down on that glass, instead of relying solely on a room thermostat. Lastly, they can also be set to automatically dim or turn off interior lights when there is enough daylight to work by. It won’t be long before this trend hits the residential building market.

while at night the space between the columns is perceived as the figure, and that was intentional.” The clients were seeking a home that would reference the interior of a yacht, and also wanted the kitchen, living and dining areas to be one big open room at the center of house. The DaSilvas worked to devise intriguing ways to achieve these dual goals, and delineate the spaces from one another. Directly in front of the entry hall is the barrel vaulted dining space with ship’s lantern pendant lighting, while the kitchen and living areas each have differentiating coffered grid ceilings. To suggest a ship’s interior, the window bench behind the dining table is carved in an undulating shape, the ceiling features decorative mahogany beams that look like hull ribs, and there is an entrancing panel of cutout starfish shapes above the bench. “We took advantage of the little bit of attic space to carve upwards and give a sense of height there. We also put lights in behind the sunburst of starfish cutouts, which you can see glowing at night, especially from the back patio or dock,” says John. “Our clients were very interested in fanciful details,” says Sharon, “which made the project a lot of fun to work on.” The foyer and stairwell features Greek Revival-esque details, such as decorative engraved borders and newel posts in ionic column shapes. “We are not designing historic reproductions,” says John, “ but we are huge architectural history buffs and we draw inspiration from many eras. We are pluralists when it comes to design influences.”

The mahogany-lined first floor study, which feels like a cozy captain’s cabin, is a great example of how the DaSilvas gave their clients the yacht-themed design they sought while also deriving inspiration from one of their most admired architects, Sir Edwin Lutyens. “Lutyens designed many archways and war monuments in early twentieth century Great Britain in which he created false perspectives with arched horizontal joints and slightly canted vertical lines,” says John. DaSilva explains how, since the height restrictions limited their ability to build up, they instead conceived of a clever wall design in which each progressive band of horizontal wood paneling diminishes in height by a quarter of an inch from floor to ceiling, making the room seem taller than it really is. “It fools the eye,” he says. “Fortunately we had a client who got excited about this kind of thing.” While the DaSilvas used every square inch available to them to provide functional living space, there was still plenty of room for their imaginations to flourish. One entire wing of the home is a two-level “bunk room” which overflows with

lighthearted maritime elements. With sleeping accommodations for nine, bathrooms on both floors and double ladders framing a spectacular tugboat and waves wall made of clear mahogany and painted wood. This space is an enchanting retreat for an entire family of guests. “This nautical ‘mural’ is made up of flat planes, so none of it is sculpture, it is all still architectural work,” says John. “It is not every project that allows for this kind of detail. It was a real pleasure to design something like this,” Sharon adds. “We were able to really let our ideas flow. We had so much fun.” The master suite is another area where architectural history meshes with contemporary design. Beneath a cupola that provides natural light is a structured wood ‘canopy’ which features abstracted acorn end points. “Seventeenth century New England colonial homes used acorn details in the ends of their cantilevered second floors and those elements would have come from more elaborate architecture in Europe going back to Elizabethan times,” says John. “We treated the perfectly symmetrical grooves as if they were paneling or wallpaper. They run right off the ends, with no

30

trim or closure. The effect is that it feels like it is ‘of today’ but still has the character and pleasures of traditional architecture.” A more Gothic Revival feel is evidenced in the curved hallway that spans from the master suite to the top level of the bunkroom. “There were a lot of challenges here as well,” says John, “such as getting enough roof pitch to allow head room, but not creating so much height as to make this connector piece feel too large on the exterior.” The DaSilvas solved the puzzle by incorporating Gothic arches over the doorways which harken back to certain kinds of homes typical on Cape Cod. “When you drive along 6A you can see Greek temple shaped houses with Gothic Revival windows or louvers up in the gable end. It is wonderful to see those eras occurring in the same structure and also to be able to use all these influences in our designs.” Two additional water-facing bedrooms that are used by the homeowners’ children complete the second floor, and include built-in dressers and cabinets similar to others that are employed throughout the home. A hidden closet under the stair, televisions tucked behind cupboards—all of these elements were carefully thought out to utilize every nook and cranny in the home.

“It is interesting that a yacht interior was one of the inspirations, and that proved to be true in more ways than one,” says Sharon. “ Not only do the design details look nautical, but we also replicate the need that a boat has to try to use all the space you can in clever ways.” While the clients clearly wanted to suggest a sea-going vessel structurally, they definitely veered away from typical ‘beachy’ interior decor. Susan Tuttle, owner of Surroundings in Orleans, had worked with the homeowners before, and she recognized that they were fans of rich colors. “I knew the owner loves reds and golds and oranges,” says Tuttle “I married those with bright blues, which work really well to create a nautical flair. “The granite countertops in the kitchen are in tones of brown with red and turquoise veining, and those colors are reflected in all the soft furnishings in the living and dining area, such as throw pillows and the handmade living room rug.” Both the first floor and master baths feature full slabs of deeply colored stone, and the living room fireplace surround is made of granite, with a black granite whale’s tail mantle piece, designed by the DaSilvas. “We don’t usually get to do this much interior work, “ says Sharon, “but here we were able to create some really intensive and cool features.” The entire design and construction process took around two years, and the team at Polhemus Savery DaSilva included many talented professionals. “To produce something like this home takes a great deal of creativity and skill on the part of a lot of people,” says John. “We are an integrated architecture firm. An entertainment-friendly outdoor kitchen features similar granite to the interior hearth, but in a different rubble-type cut. The outdoor kitchen counter includes a set-in stainless steel grill and refrigerator.

A great view of the harbor is seen from the gas firepit, which is surrounded by comfortable outdoor chairs.

We design these special details and draw on an extensive network of craftspeople to execute them. All of this detailed woodwork was created off site in very sophisticated shops. Our team really did spectacular work here.” The property’s lush landscape architecture was handled by TerraInk. An entertainment-friendly outdoor kitchen features similar granite to the interior hearth, but in a different rubbletype cut. The outdoor kitchen counter includes a set-in stainless steel grill and refrigerator that can be removed during the winter months. A wooden cabinet hides another television and wrapping around the edges of its doors is a carved anchor design that echoes the anchor cut-outs on the front window shutters.

34

The home is full of these kinds of intricate and thoughtful details, and John and Sharon are proud of the fact that they always take their time considering every element of their projects. “Nothing goes unstudied. We take everything into account in our designs,” says John. Sharon still found it to be one of most playful projects they have undertaken. “It really was great fun from start to finish, she says.” John agrees. “It is playful and whimsical, but it’s not outrageous,” he says. “One of our architectural mentors, César Pelli used to say that it is OK to make architecture that is fun, but not funny, and I think this house exemplifies that.”

Falmouth architect Jill Neubauer, who has been producing great architecture for 25 years, credits her upbringing for her creativity and the support of a welcoming community and clients for her success. WHEN SHE REFLECTS ON THE WORK SHE HAS PRODUCED

over the past twenty-five years, Falmouth-based architect Jill Neubauer often uses words like “joy, fun, lovely, thoughtful.” She does more than fulfill a client’s program of rooms and spaces; she imagines them in those spaces, sharing family time, helping children with homework, watching a sunset, going about the business of life. This approach arises from the original connections that inspired her future career in the form of two very special places where she vacationed with family: the farmland cottage of one

set of grandparents in northern Wisconsin and the lakeside cabin of another. “I was fortunate growing up in homes that were lived in for a long time—generations,” she says. “I went every year with people I loved, and every year was special. I learned the importance of what a building, a place, can do for a family and how architecture can help make these memories.” When she closes her eyes, she can see every detail of the farmland cottage. As for the Northwoods lakeside cabin, she calls that “my core, my soul. The memory and beauty in that

cabin have driven my career and interest in architecture.” Neubauer was born into a creative family: the grandmother with the log cabin was a painter, her sister is a visual and performing artist, her mother is creative, and her father was an engineer. So Neubauer may have been genetically predisposed to notice visual details. But it was also her experiences. She recounts her underlying motive when she visited the homes of two friends as a teenager: “Each lived in a beautiful, modern house, and I would want to go to their houses and hang out because of the buildings.” Adding yet another dimension to this fascination was the Prairie School, the private high school she attended. 40

Commissioned by Willie Hilpert and Imogene Powers Johnson (of the S.C. Johnson family), its campus was inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright. These three influences—cottage, cabin, and modern architecture—have informed her work as she has undertaken historic renovations, remodeled cottages, and created new homes in sensitive landscapes on Cape Cod and beyond. In the end, she says, “It’s all about meaningful spaces.” While many homes are what Neubauer calls “boxes sitting on the landscape with a stoop,” she designs spaces that “celebrate the season and the environment the house sits in.” This attention to the environment is, of course, critical anywhere, but when those homes sit on Cape Cod, the impetus

For Neubauer, intelligent design is about the intimate spaces where family activities take place—a dining table with a built-in bench where everyone gathers to play cards (below right), or a bed built into an alcove rather than plopped in the midst of four straight walls (below left). The bathroom shower in the Oyster Pond property (above) fits to the changing rooflines.

for connection is even stronger. “So many clients are thrilled to be here. Whether new to the Cape or here for generations, they are more aware of the regional environment,” she says. In this aspect, Neubauer sees a kinship with her Midwestern roots, “Like North Wisconsin, this is a place about landscape and escape to that landscape.” Neubauer herself landed in Falmouth, where she raised her two children after earning an undergraduate degree in drawing and photography from Cornell University and her degree in architecture from Harvard’s Graduate School of Design. “Falmouth is such a thoughtful place with a wonderful demographic,” she says. “There is so much science and academic strength here, and now there are multiple generations of scientists. There can be deep resources, but there is a modesty about the

people here—a quiet New England Yankee quality.” Through her years on the Cape, she has gladly bore witness to the expansion of the architectural aesthetic beyond traditional Capes and Colonials, an expansion she has watched evolve across the country. For decades post-World War II, she reminds us, our “American real estate/development culture” was largely about building formulaic houses quickly to get expanding families settled. “There was nothing intelligent, interesting, or joyful about it.” Today, a wider range of architectural styles is being embraced on Cape Cod and around the country, and Neubauer credits the proliferation of home design magazines and television programs for “shifting people’s comfort with a broader aesthetic, and that has meant a rebirth for architecture.”

Neubauer’s porches can dwarf the rest of the house. “We’ll design mudrooms, outdoor showers, and spring porches,” she says. “And if you want, we will design a house to go with that too.’”

Many of Neubauer’s designs embrace the modern aesthetic she fell in love with as a teenager: clean, simple lines; abstracted elements; creative surprises; close connections between architecture and landscape; and generous outdoor social spaces. One outstanding example of this is a home she designed for a seven-acre site in Chapoquoit. The property is largely in conservation and originally had a home sitting right on a dune in a high velocity zone. Her clients had a choice: Accept the house as it was or tear it down and build to meet the newer floodplain regulations. They chose the latter, and the engineering involved to make it permittable included driving ninety piles forty feet into the ground and connecting them through a foundational network with steel columns coming up to the house. “It will be the only house standing in West Falmouth in a hundred years,” Neubauer remarks.

44

She simplified the home’s original footprint into a rectangle and designed an elegant, strong contemporary home to sit on that footprint. Generous windows offer 360-degree views of Cape Cod Bay, a stunning marsh, and West Falmouth Harbor, giving the impression that the home is an extension of the landscape. “Most of the new homes we do that are teardowns from older cottages that don’t meet existing codes are modern with lots of glass so the clients can enjoy the magnificent sites,” she says. With their energy efficiency and use of nontoxic and sustainable materials, Neubauer’s designs are right at home in the twenty-first century, though their modern roots go back further on Cape Cod than many realize. Beginning in the 1930s, several innovators of modern architecture moved to the Outer Cape, building creative enclaves for themselves and their friends. Due to the efforts of the Cape Cod Modern House Trust, a wider

public is now recognizing the precedent for this type of architecture. In that spirit, Neubauer designed a modern Truro beach house that settles into its landscape. Built to step down the hill so as not to obstruct the neighbors’ view and built with a flat roof to adhere to a height restriction, the home, like others she has designed, engages in a dialogue of glass, or what she describes as “a quiet relation of matching glass from one side of the house to the other, a one-to- one match of beautiful transparency,” she says. “The house that taught me that is a historic house owned by Katharine Cornell on Lake Tashmoo on Martha’s Vineyard. It has a gorgeous old living room with matching glass on each side. I saw it years ago and never forgot it.” Beyond wall-sized windows, Neubauer’s designs connect to their environments in other ways. One of the most important is her attention to what she calls the “in between spaces”—porches, screened porches, terraces, and outdoor rooms. “Screened porches are the most successful spaces we build because they mean we can celebrate going outside finally,” she says. “We make them bigger so you can eat, lounge, even watch television or sleep in them. There is no reason to come in during the high season. They are joyful and lovely.” Sometimes clients have to be convinced of the need for a screened porch, but once they agree, it becomes their favorite space, she says. Some of her outdoor rooms are standalones, like the glamp—or glamorous camp—structure she built for a Cataumet property. “I am very interested in glamps,” Neubauer says. “I made the first one for myself after I had been on a trip to Moab in Utah and had the opportunity to stay in one.” She has since created these outdoor rooms with their canvas shells and room for beds and bureaus for clients. They are not only fun, they save clients money. While adding a bedroom can cost $100,000, a glamp offers a less expensive way to

house extra summer guests. They are so popular with her clients, she says, “They become the room everyone wants to stay in.” They are also marvelous for children, like the three sons of her Cataumet clients, who often use their glamp as a hideaway for playing games and reading. That is, when the three boys are not ensconced in their bunkroom, which Neubauer re-created from a non-descript guest room with two single beds and two small windows. Typical of the level of fun detail on which Neubauer thinks is the tin washtub-style sink she installed in a barnboardencased alcove in the room. Imagining their toothbrushes and washcloths overwhelming the guest bathroom, she created this space to give them a sense of camping in their own room. The entire Cataumet home, in fact, was remodeled from tired, boxy house into a shingled cottage with distinctive character with its second floor wall of windows, and handsome deck with enclosed storage space underneath. The kitchen went from disorganized and inefficient to spacious and streamlined, with open shelving and modern lighting. This home is an example of intelligent design, based on how people really live and encouraging them to be more playful in their spaces. One room that exemplifies thoughtful design in any home is the mudroom, Neubauer says. While a lot of attention is usually paid to dining rooms that mostly sit passively, the need for the humble but critical mudroom is often overlooked. “A lot of the time, everyone gets out of the car and heads to the kitchen with all of the stuff that they have—coats, backpacks, homework papers, beach towels, flip flops— all of the stuff we schlep and 48

need. If we did nothing else but dedicate a space to all of the stuff, it would be much better.” She adds, “We say, ‘We’ll design mudrooms, outdoor showers, and spring porches, and if you want, we will design a house to go with that too.’” For Neubauer, intelligent design is less about grand great rooms, formal dining rooms, and large master bedrooms and more about the intimate spaces where family activities take place—a kitchen island around which children do their homework, a dining table with a built-in bench where everyone gathers to play cards, a nook with a chair—perfect for viewing a sunrise—or a bed built into an alcove rather than plopped in the midst of four straight walls. Each project represents a story to Neubauer, from her imaginings of how spaces will be enjoyed to the experiences she has with her clients as she creates them. “The projects that are really terrific,” she says, “are the ones where the clients really embrace this wonderful adventure. I rarely separate the architecture from the experience we had.” To keep her perspective fresh and inspirational ideas flowing, Neubauer turns to travel, reading (mostly about business and visual people), and collaborating with a host of creative people. She worked with many of her favorites on a new home for Gunning Point clients. Pairpoint Glass of Sandwich created the colorful globes and pendants for the kitchen and dining room, Cor Metals in Mashpee made accents for the kitchen island, Saltwoods in Boston made the dining table, and Retrocraft Design in Concord provided furnishings. Her approach to the design

itself was creative, with an abstracted grove of interior and exterior columns providing a preview of the grove of real trees surrounding the property. Twenty-five years into her career, she is excited about what is coming next: “Now I keep learning and keep doing it better and better. It takes a long time to learn how to do this, but it is so wonderful to get to a place where you know some things.” Still, some principles have persisted over the years. “For all of my clients, whether we are doing a vacation home or making a primary home, I like doing something fresh. It’s always about spaces that function well and that bring joy, fun, and beauty into their lives.” And this is the primary lesson Neubauer learned long ago, surrounded by the textures of family, love, and beauty established by her beloved grandparents.

Situated on a seven-acre lot off of Route 6A in Brewster, John Redding’s house—designed by John Dvorsak and built by McPhee Associates—clearly reflects his style, tastes and interests. From the approach, it seems pretty modest. It’s a Cape with three gables protruding from the front roof and an expansive farmer’s porch to give further depth. There is a bit of a bump out on one side; on the other is a breezeway that connects to the two-car garage with a cupola and weathervane. Everything was meticulously thought out and time was taken to get it right; as his second home and future retirement home, he was in no rush to finish it. “John [Redding] was very particular in what he wanted in his new home,” says Rob McPhee, president of McPhee Associates. “He shared his complete vision with us, and we were very pleased to work with him to fulfill his wishes.” John, amusingly, gave his property a name: Four Turtle Farm

at Tupelo Hills. It was not to sound stuck up, but rather to poke fun at the old tradition. He coined it such because he found a bunch of turtles ambling conspicuously by when he first visited the property and was surprised to find the rare, but distinctive horizontally branched tupelos situated throughout the land as well. It is fitting given John’s love of nature. As he shows me around the property, he points out that he wanted to keep as much as the

The height of the nine-foot ceilings and the intricate interior crown molding and chair rails throughout all hearken back to the owner’s apartment’s style, while artist Time Struna’s works dominate the walls. tree coverage intact when they cleared the lot for the house. He mentions that some trees could’ve easily been taken down, but he chose to keep them intact. He also chose to keep on his property some wild bushes he didn’t know much about (chokeberries) as well as some that he did (blueberries). Why Brewster specifically? His family has history here. His father built a home on Beach Plum Lane on the other side of Nickerson State Park in 1976 when he was a boy. Brewster prides itself in having a mix of both natural and social history, and John has come to appreciate that.

67

(Above) “The additional structural design and work needed to accommodate a true stone wall in the middle of the home [in the dining room pictured above] was no small feat,” says builder Rob McPhee. (Right) Stairs leading up to the second floor create many spots to look around the house.

John, who works for a mutual fund company, adores his permanent residence on Beacon Street in the Back Bay. While some people design and build a getaway to be markedly different from their city residence, John chose to mirror the creature comforts he had established there. For instance, the height of his nine-foot ceilings on the first floor and the intricate interior crown molding and chair rails throughout all hearken back to his apartment’s style. “John [Dvorsak]’s first design called for eightfoot, nine-inch high ceilings and I said, ‘John, I want nine,’” he says. “We worked with John to pull together every detail he wanted to incorporate in his new home. While we made suggestions for John, frequently the decisions reverted back to what he recently did in his Beacon Street home. The finished look is very clean with a bit of a city flair while respecting the casualness of the Cape,” says McPhee. The furniture and décor isn’t overwhelmingly “beachy;” it is a lot more urban with a little more of a casual feel. When it came to the tiling in the bathroom, he asked for the same exact style in this house. Another piece of décor he insisted on, which is not too prominent in Cape Cod retreats, was a stone wall on a first-floor interior wall. McPhee said he could do a veneer and make it look real, but John wanted an

interior wall with real stone to leave no doubt of its authenticity. “The additional structural design and work needed to accommodate a true stone wall in the middle of the home was no small feat,” says McPhee. “We accomplished the look John was after and the true authenticity with a solid stone wall, which came out beautifully. John was spot on with his request and the wall is a work of art itself.” It is such a compelling feature that he is planning on putting in a similar look in his wine cellar, although he laughs that he may go the veneer route in that location. While a lot of the interior could easily be in a city apartment, John chose specifically to work in wall art that speaks to the Cape’s natural spaces, namely cranberry bogs, marshes, and grass-covered dunes. That is where the artwork of Tim Struna comes in. The distinctively stylized work of the Brewster artist is placed on at least one wall of each room. And going up the stairs are a series of the artist’s lighthouses, purposely ordered in the order in which they appear as you travel down Cape. Certain things throughout the house were designed specifically with a piece of furniture or a practical purpose in mind. The garage is not as symmetrical as the rest of the house. It was

designed purposely with extra space on one side just so John could store his kayaks in that one spot. The kitchen sink is situated in a corner of the house, so he can prepare food and stare out the bank of windows on that corner to appreciate the natural surroundings, rather than gaze across the open floor plan of the house. “John Dvorsack did a fabulous job with the design and architecture of the home,” says McPhee. “The exterior trim details, scale and proportion of the home as you approach heading up the hill all look fabulous.” His office in the master bedroom features a nook where he has placed a particular desk he wanted. The desk isn’t an heirloom (“I think I got it at Pottery Barn,” he says.), but he wanted it to look like it was planned. John admittedly doesn’t spend much time on the second floor, as it is used mainly for visiting family guests. But there are plenty of examples of architectural and decorative flair that he enjoys nonetheless, from the pointed eves in the bedrooms (“John [Dvorsak] loves to do these beautiful spaces,” he says) to the small turtles on the tiles of the guest bathroom (“…for Four Turtle Farm,” he laughs). A visitor might not be overwhelmed with a particular style of décor or grandiose features, but rest assured that everything meticulously planned out of and in this house means so much to the owner.  Home Builders & Remodelers Association of Cape Cod

HOT TREND

Security in the Age of the Smart Home

S

BY KEITH BARTHOLOMEW

mart home technology is a wonderful convenience for many homeowners. It can add security and peace of mind with features like the ability to remotely view live surveillance footage, alarm/disarm a security system or even lock doors—all using a smart phone. But peace of mind can quickly turn to worry if homeowners think someone with malicious intent can access their systems. Whether homeowners hire a home technology pro or use DIY options for smart home technology, it’s important to make sure both home networks and the devices on them are secure. This is especially true with the equipment that makes up a home network, e.g. modems, routers, wireless access points, etc. If the network itself isn’t secure, everything on it is open to attacks. In fact, attackers search for networks and devices that are not properly secured. The best way homeowners can ensure a safe network is to use a qualified, experienced home technology professional who knows network security best practices. On a secure network, Internet-connected devices in a home are behind a firewall and can’t be accessed from the outside. In some cases, a trained pro can prevent attackers from even knowing a network exists. Hiring a professional isn’t an option for all homeowners, but there are still things people can do to secure their homes. Use Built-In Security Features One mistake people make is to leave equipment on default settings and then expect it to be secure. Manual configuration of built-in security features is something every homeowner should do. These features are designed to help protect networks and equipment from attacks. During initial setup of any device, check the manual, or with the manufacturer, to take advantage of advanced security configurations. Cloud-based Logins Another best practice is to always use a cloud-based login or app over those that require direct firewall throughput. There’s no reason to open ports in a firewall if it can be avoided. Some older devices simply can’t do this. Examples include older DVRs used to record surveillance video or older home control software. If a device like this is more than five years old, homeowners should look into replacing it.

Keep It Updated It’s important to keep software updated. People understand the importance of keeping anti-virus software up to date, but tend to put off updates to other things. If an Internet-connected device or a device’s operating system has an update available, do it. The latest versions of any software have security features that weren’t in previous versions. Keeping hardware up-to-date is just as important. Sometimes, with older devices, software updates are no longer possible. The software and security features on older devices are not nearly as good as today’s. Software security evolves quickly, and so does the technology used by hackers. If a piece of Internet-connected hardware in a home is more than five years old, it might be time for an update. It’s always a good idea to ask a home technology pro if it’s time for a device to be updated. This is especially true for older home security systems with analog modems. Hackers can access these simply by dialing in. Another good reason to upgrade older security systems is the “new” ability to tie in things like carbon monoxide and smoke detectors, or to get alerts if there’s water in the basement. Security From the Outside Sometimes, things homeowners do when they’re away from their homes can cause a security breach or give hackers access. The following “safety rules” are good practices for everyone to follow. • Don’t use unsecured public networks. Again, if a network isn’t safe, no device on it is safe. • Don’t use public networks for anything important • Never enter user names and passwords—or any personal information—on a public network • If your laptop or device offers security settings for public networks, turn them on/check the box • Enable two-factor authentication whenever it’s an option • For apps, devices, etc. shared by family members, don’t share login credentials if there’s an option for individual users • Use strong passwords and change them often • Educate yourself to recognize phishing attempts While the thought of a hacker gaining control of a home’s technology is scary, homeowners are installing smart home technology more than ever before. The question many homeowners ask isn’t if they should install the technology, but how to keep it safe. Keith Bartholomew founded Advanced Communication Technologies, a home technology provider in Norwell.
