Morocco Guest of Honor at Fieracavalli 2025 in Verona by Giorgia Mauri
Morocco has been the Guest of Honor at the 127th edition of Fieracavalli, the prestigious international horse fair held in Verona, Italy, that has just ended. This invitation highlights the Kingdom’s prominent position on the global equestrian scene, reflecting a centuries-old heritage and internationally recognized expertise in breeding and traditional equestrian culture. Representing Morocco, the Association du Salon du Cheval, in partnership with La Maison de l’Artisan, has presented a national pavilion that served as a vibrant showcase of Moroccan craftsmanship and cultural heritage. This space showcased the role of the Salon du Cheval d’El Jadida, a prestigious annual event among international equestrian fairs, while celebrating the talent of Moroccan artisans whose craftsmanship is closely tied to the equestrian world, from saddlery and embroidery to leatherwork, metalwork and traditional jewelry. On that occasion, Veronafiere S.p.A (organizer of Fieracavalli) and the Association du Salon du Cheval signed a memorandum of understanding that places horses at the centre of a new cultural and economic bridge between Italy and Morocco, on the 200th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries, opening a season of new cooperation between the shores of the Mediterranean, a strategic partnership structured around two key pillars: •
Promotion of joint initiatives including fairs, exhibitions and equestrian events, designed to enhance cultural, economic and equestrian collaboration between the two nations.

Development of exchange and training programs for industry professionals, including breeders, trainers, veterinarians and artisans, aimed at fostering knowledge sharing and advancing technical expertise.

Urszula Łęczycka: Your farm has been established more than 30 years ago by you and your husband Erwin. Nowadays you run it all by yourself and Straight Egyptian horses with GR prefix are worldwide known. You also run one of the largest Straight Egyptian black coloured herds in the world – that is in high demand nowadays. Can you tell us more about the idea of establishing your breeding program? Was it the same from the beginning or it has been changing through the years and following the market? What were your first horses and where did you get them from? Annette Escher: We started our Straight Egyptian breeding with a small number of horses several years before we could buy the right place and built “Rothenberg Stud” in 1991. In 1992 the stud and pastures was ready and we moved our horses to here … from this time, having place enough, we were looking for the right additions and after we haven’t found most of them in Europe (there was only few Egyptians in Germany / Europe at this time and nearly nothing for sale) we went several times

to USA looking at studs and horses driving thousands of miles weekly. During this time we found and bought the foundation horses for my recent breeding, so the mares like: Halims Asmara (Ansata Halim Shah x Lancers Asmara- US National Top Ten and twice World Res. Champion mare), Dalima Shah (Ansata Halim Shah x AK Bint Dalia II), Ansata Aya Maria (Ansata Shah Zaman x Ansata Aya Halima by Ansata Ibn Halima) – Bukra line and the black Champion mare Maria Halima (Haziz Halim x Chelsea), Then we found the black mare Fasinah (Nahaman x Fatima) in Germany and before 1992 we already have owned the mare Samara (Ibn Moheba x Safiniya by Ibn Galal), I still own her black great-granddaughter GR Samantha which meanwhile is mother herself ! Over the years we sometimes leased a mare or made breeding-cooperation to add foals out of interesting mothers and motherlines – this way we bred our „Queen“ GR Nashidah (by Classic Shadwan) which is the mother of black gold-premium stallion GR Nashad (exp. Kuwait, by GR Faleeh) as well as the black mare GR Layla (by GR Faleeh) who is the mother of our young

Madallan-Madheen was not bred to get black, his parents were chestnut (his father Ansata El Salaam) and bay (the famous mare Madinah, mother of Imperial Madheen) but he got black “by accident” and was just bred to be a great horse … and got a rare gold premium ribbon from the

German registry later at the stallion licensing show! Most of our early blacks were out of non black lines … blacks were seldom and good blacks even more and usually they were impossible to buy! Since I was a child I always was a big fan of black horses but Erwin mostly loved the greys - in the end we love all colors so we only had a few blacks in the first years. Over the years we got more and more black foals (also Classic Shadwan produced fantastic blacks) and after more than 30 years I have managed to get fantastic blacks from all our foundation-horses … for several I needed generations but meanwhile I have a fantastic group of black and black producing broodmares, many are already 4th and 5th generation of our foundation-mares! pedigrees and as we also were riders since the beginning we wanted to have a solid horse with good body, legs and movements which are able to carry us over the fields! The goal was not to lose any of this points over the years … type, body, movement … and most important at all the fantastic, people loving sweet character the Egyptians are famous for. UŁ: Straight Egyptian breeding is one of most difficult ones as you must use a very limited gene pool that creates some problems in avoiding inbreeding and breeding overall harmonius and typey horse. Limiting the Straight Egyptian breeding to black colour group only must be even more challenging. How do you find your way to keep breeding beautiful and correct horses with such a limited requirements? which means they had a bigger gene-pool as if we would bought mostly blacks in the beginning … there were only very few black and black producing lines at this time which already often were inbred. And over the years we always were open to use sometimes outside stallions doesn’t matter the color like World Champion Al Lahab if we thought they would bring us something new in blood and look … in my recent herd I have great mares from this line! We always used the Straight Egyptian bloodlines we liked personally not looking for trends and what other breeders prefer … we went our own way for our own taste and what we loved ourselves!

UŁ: Did you manage to combine your goals of having the bloodlines, the strenght, stamina and also the colour and then keep into the fashion to win the show titles? It had to be extremely difficult task.. AE: Over the years we often showed our horses and many of our foundation horses and their offspring got MultiChampions and gold premium stallions. For example Dalima Shah and her daughter Shadwanah (by Classic Shadwan) as well as Halims Asmara and her son GR Amaretto (by Classic Shadwan) won among other titles the champion titles at the Egyptian Event Europe. Also our first homebred black mares GR Marietta and GR Marianah (both Madallan-Madheen x Maria Halima) won several championships which was very special at this time as nearly no blacks was shown successfully! Also later our black stallion GR Faleeh (exported to Kuwait;

We sold and I still sell my foals nearly all over the world and many of them won and win a lot for their new owners– many champion titles in halter classes as well as endurance races or riding classes. Our sold horses live around the world as breeding-horses and produce fantastic foals for their new owners … or are just best friends and great riding-horses to give their new owners fun and happy hours. We also bred several gold premium stallions at the stallion registration of the registry, for me one of the most difficult gold to get at all! UŁ: Did you manage to establish some dam and sire lines of your own that you admire until that day and continue? AE: All of my recent breeding-horses come in direct line from our early foundation horses – and all of them carry either the blood of Classic Shadwan or Madallan-Madheen or both of them! Over the years I managed to breed fantastic blacks from all of the foundation-mares which made me very happy and proud and I love to see that the sold ones make their new owners happy, too. UŁ: here is probably no Arabian horse lover in Europe that would not know the photos made by your husband Erwin who passed away 9 years ago. Since that time you keep running the farm by your own with just one helper. Your strenght, passion and achievements could be an inspiration for many woman or girls who dream or run the horse breeding on their own for different reasons.

It must be hard, emotional but probably also satisfying when you manage to breed a great horse at the end? What would you say and advice to the other woman – breeders? AE: Yes, the death of Erwin for sure was the most terrible time in my life, I thought my life have stopped, too. But the horses helped me a lot because giving up is no solution, you have to go on day by day, they wait for you, they need you! This baby nearly died as well because of substitute milk so I needed to take milk from other mares to feed this baby … you can imagine that I nearly had no time to sleep over months which was very hard but maybe also good for me in this situation. My only aim was that we both need to survive …and we did! Meanwhile GR Bint Asmara gave birth to already four wonderful black fillies by GR Ishad herself which was sold in and outside Europe and one of her black fillies even won Championships for her new owner … all this made me very happy and gave me force to continue! My advice is to do what you love with all your heart and soul... and never give up! There are always good and bad times in our lifetime… you need to survive the bad time and grow yourself in the good time and take it into your heart for the future. Like when

Gracing the cover of this stallion editorial is the beautiful Maximillion NA. A stallion that has greatness stamped all over him, starting with his name, a derivation of the Latin name Maximus, which means the grandest or the greatest. Imported to Brazil as a young colt by Thiago and Kamilla Pontes of TP Arabians, he was bred by North Arabians, in California. He comes from the Mirage sire line, one of the most important of our times, brought back into significance mainly through Sheila Varian and her U.S. National Champion Stallion Bay Abi. He was responsible for producing

the great Bay El Bey who became U.S. National Reserve Champion Stallion and produced three iconic sires: Huckleberry Bey, Barbary and Bey Shah. The later became one of the most important sires of all times with countless National Champions and Champion producers to his credit. His son, the U.S. National Champion Fame VF when crossed to the beautiful El Shaklan daughter Precious as Gold, produced yet the next Sire of Significance from the line, the unforgettable Versace. Versace´s type became a world landmark and his blood became a prized commodity. Among his great sons were the U.S National Reserve Champion Stallion Da Vinci FM and the multi U.S. National Champion Stallion DA Valentino.
Maximillion NA´s sire Dominic M, arguably one of the most important sires of the present time, is a product of a mating between Da Vinci FM and a daughter of DA Valentino, thus doubling the blood of Versace and his entire sire line, representing the eight generation in a row of magnificent sires. His dam line is equally impressive. The first traceable mare in the bottom side of his pedigree, coming from the desert tribes, is Haydee, a mare that was purchased in Aleppo and imported to England where she produced the filly Naomi, whose sire came also from Syria. Naomi was imported to the U.S. by Randolph Huntington in 1888, being one of the first purebred Arabians

brought to the country and one of its most important foundation mares from that point on. Her prolific family eventually spread from the East Coast to the West Coast arriving to California, where the Champion Mare Hannah Lee, by the straight Spanish stallion Valeroso, was bred as well as all of her descendants. She is the mother of the acclaimed AHW Aristocrat Bey Shah daughter WA Marlaina Lee, the mother of U.S. National Champion Mare JJ La Estrella and the champion Padrons Psyche daughter Margarita Psy. When bred to the North Arabians famed stallion Ever After NA, Margarita Psy produced the full sisters Malaya NA, Silver Champion Junior Filly at the

ABWC Las Vegas and Makala NA, the mother of Maximillion NA. Purchased in 2022, he was spotted by the international trainer Dejair Silvestre ten days prior to the Scottsdale show who was totally smitten by him, calling the Pontes couple right away to talk about the colt. Even though Thiago and Kamilla were not specifically on the market for a stallion at that time, it seemed that Maximillion NA was indeed too special to let go. A colt that combined a great pedigree that would complement their breeding program perfectly as well as great type and conformation, seemed to be a rare
combination. Their gut feeling was that the risk of betting on such amazing colt, despite being very young, was worth of taking. The decision was made and Maximillion NA became part of TP Arabians. Right from the start their feeling proved to be right since some days later Maximillion NA was crowned as the Gold Junior Champion Colt at Scottsdale International Show. After his win in the U.S. he was brought to Brazil and arrived just in time to compete at the Brazilian Nationals where he won the Bronze Junior Colt Championship.

My name is Sheona Hamilton-Grant, I am a Scottish graphite artist based in Bonn, Germany. For over two decades, I’ve been quietly dedicated to capturing the strength and character of horses and dogs, the presence that doesn’t shout but quietly insists on being noticed, in detailed pencil drawings. My work highlights the spirit of these animals with simple, intentional lines into realistic monochrome drawings, exploring the poetic tension between stillness and vitality. Drawing is my way of slowing down and paying close attention, using a steady hand and a curious eye to create images that speak subtlety and honestly. Over the years, my drawings have found homes in public, corporate, and private collections across Europe, Australia, and North America, and have been exhibited from Germany and the Netherlands to Canada, the USA, and Australia. I’m fortunate to have a devoted following of collectors worldwide who appreciate a practice grounded in discipline, technical precision, emotional depth, and a touch of dry humour that keeps my scribble friends in line.
The Art At the heart of my work is a simple belief: the beauty of a single line. This line can say more than a thousand embellishments. Graphite gives me an honesty. It allows me to strip away distractions, leaving intention, clarity, and a way of focusing on what truly matters: emotion. Working in black and white, I blend my technique with a sense of presence, aiming to create portraits that feel alive without ever becoming overworked. I approach each drawing as both craftswoman and quiet observer. Graphite demands patience, precision, and respect, but also leaves room for poetry. Horses especially draw me in with their aura, their strength and fragility, their elegance edged with wisdom. They communicate entire stories with a flick of an ear or the swish of a tail. Capturing these subtleties in pencil, is a slow, deliberate study; one that brings me joy and and a sense of peace. Every drawing is an invitation to look closer, slow down and understand my subject through its very essence.
Exhibitions After taking a seven-year break from the art world, I returned in 2024 with fresh eyes and sharpened pencils. Since then, I’ve taken part in three group shows: Monochrome in Bonn, Verbinding in the Netherlands, and the most significant one: the Dutch Equine Art Fair (DEAF25) in Amsterdam. Over the years, I’ve been fortunate to receive a number of awards. Highlights include Best in Show at the 2016 Pencil Art Society Exhibition in Canada, and Second Prize & People’s Choice at the Inglis Equine Art Prize in Australia. In 2013, I was honoured with Master Pencil Artist status (a recognition of the skill and dedication I bring to every piece.) Additional acknowledgements include several American Art Awards and an Artistic Merit Awards from the Art & Colour 365 Awards. Commission Work In my mind commission work is a deeply personal collaboration, a meeting point between my collector’s story and my craft. I offer only a small number of bespoke graphite portraits each year, allowing each piece the time and attention it deserves. This limited availability means I work closely with my collectors from the first conversation to the final archival finished portrait, ensuring the drawing reflects not just likeness, but that extra layer that reflects the quiet character, history, and heart of the animal at its centre. Every portrait is created with museum-grade materials and a deliberate, steady process honed over decades. Clients receive behind-the-scenes updates, a certificate of authenticity, and the assurance that each work is built to last for generations. It’s an intimate, considered journey. One that values trust, clarity, and the shared belief that a portrait can become part of a family’s legacy. If a drawing is a way of honouring a beloved companion, the commission process is my way of honouring my collector.

Giorgio Distefano’s artistic production is part of a complex reflection on the relationships between iconographic tradition, the processual nature of the sign and the relationship between man and landscape. Originally from Sicily and now a long-time resident of Florence, the artist has developed a practice that draws on both of these territorial identities: on the one hand, the harsh and luminous Mediterranean dimension, and on the other, the historical and cultural context of the Tuscan capital, a symbolic place of constant dialogue between art and technical knowledge.
