This year was the 65th anniversary of the Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show. Some people might wonder what could this annual event possibly offer that’s new, different, and exciting after more than six decades. For many of us, that is allure, the intrigue, that keeps us coming back year after year. This show, held in one of the most beautiful cities in America, holds the distinction of being the largest Arabian horse show in the world with over 2000 entries. Among the horses entered, are the brand new faces of the yearlings, most are making their show ring debut, as well as never before seen horses that travelled here from countries around the world. This year, our Brazilian friends brought some of their best bred and owned horses and took home several of the highest awards of the show. Not to be out done, breeders, owners, and handlers from the Middle East, Europe, Australia, and South America also achieved tremendous success competing with their horses. The Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show is far more than just another competition. It is a gathering of passionate people who want to share the experience, to observe, to learn, to enjoy the incredible beauty, intelligence, versatility, and athletic ability of the breed, and to immerse themselves in the fabulous world of Arabian horses. Here you will see many of the top halter and performance trainers, handlers and riders - professional and amateur - present their horses. Among the winners featured on the following pages are past champions continuing their quest for glory by earning a title of Scottsdale Champion - one of the most prestigious tiles in the world. We can never get enough of their beauty! Yet, for many, it is the thrill of discovering new faces, young horse,s whose potential for greatness is just beginning to blossom. And still more reasons to attend, ‘The Greatest Arabian Horse Show On Earth”, is the chance to meet old friends and to make new ones. Sharing our love of the Arabian horse is among our greatest joys. It is always a great pleasure to come back to Sharjah, a place well known as the Cultural Capital of the United Arabian Emirates and Cultural Capital the Arab World where the tradition blends very well with modernity. It is a unique place for a unique Arabian Horse Festival that took place on 5-7 of march 2020 – it was the 21st edition of the Sharjah International Arabian Horse Festival traditionaly held on the premises of Sharjah Equestrian & Racing Club, the first equestrian club in the UAE, established in 1982 at the
initiation of H.H. Shk. Dr. SULTAN BIN MOHAMMED AL QASSIMI, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah. The 21st Sharjah International Arabian Horse Festival lasted three days and was indeed a continuation of the success of previous festivals. As always the organisers did their best to ensure that everyone felt welcome and that everything was prefectly prepared and going well. The weather was also

very welcoming and the atmosphere of the show was very enjoyable. The show gathered many arabian horses of very high quality and great pedigree. Show Director Mr Sultan Khalifa Al Yahyaie who has run this Festival since the beginning and his experienced team made sure everything ran like clockwork.

The Show took place in the exceptional indoor arena which was very well prepared to handle the large amount of horses that entered the show ground and also was beautifully decorated with fresh flowers. The show was judged by the international panel of judges: Mr. Nikolaus Jung (Germany), Mrs. Marianne Tengstedt (Denmark), Ms. Irina Stigler (Russia), Ms. Anna Stojanowska (Poland), Mr. Gianmarco Aragno (Italy), Mr. Ahmed Abdelrazek (Egypt) and Mr. Josy Everars (Belgium).
As the city of Sharjah is also known as centere of culture, learning and arts, the final day of the Festival was also accopanied by the Charity Auction where the equestrian works of art were auctioned in aid of the charity. It was a pleasure to attend and see the 21st Sharjah International Arabian Horse Festival, as it was a wonderful event and worth remembering. q
Throughout the first two days the horses competed with each other with constant cheering of the audience but the third day of the festival was most emotional, accompanied with cheering and applause from the gathered audience as the stallions entered the arena and also the Championship took place. Also the Championship was succesful for Dubai Arabian Horse Stud (2 golden medals and 3 silver medals), Ajman Stud (1 golden medal and 3 bronze medals), Sheikh Mohammed Bin Saoud Al Qassemi (2 silver medals and 2 bronze medals), Sheikh Abdullah Bin Majid Al Qassemi (bronze medal), Qusai Mohammed Saeed Ali Obaidalla (gold medal), Khaled Ghanem Mubarak Alomari (gold medal), Abdulwahab Saeed Alsayed (gold medal). Also it is always good to mention the horse with the highest score in the show and the highest score among other beautiful horses – it was Mahder Al Jamal owned by Al Shiraa Stables with the total score of 92,83 points (including two times 20 points for Type and four times 20 points for Head and Neck). www.tuttoarabi.com - TUTTO ARABI | 73

The 2020 Abu Dhabi International Arabian Horse Championship took place during one of the busiest times of the Middle Eastern show calendar. Nevertheless, it remains a highly successful event, with over one and a half million dollars in prize money which draws top class entries from some of the biggest studs of the region. There were slightly fewer international entries than in previous years as owners and trainers juggle their entries between four international shows in UAE between 12 Feb and 12 March! There are limits to energy levels of horses and humans, and a review of the show calendar would seem to be in order. Also, to take into account the other countries in the region for the benefit of all! Along with the usual qualifications all horses had to have maintained an average score of 90.50% and above since 01/01/2018, a very tall order which resulted in much lower entries in the juniors and for once no divisions of their classes. Whilst this qualification is acceptable for the senior classes, there is a very strong case that such a high score is unfair to yearlings who can change dramatically from one month to the next or maybe only have one chance to qualify for a variety of reasons. It could also encourage owners to over show their youngsters to chase a qualifying score which could even become a welfare issue with the amount of stress put on them if they are pushed too hard! Furthermore, at this event, a quick glance at results of the Yearling filly class shows that of the 14 entries 7 received scores less than the qualifying figure, surely illustrating the danger of relying on
scores at this young age. Yearlings should have no minimum score, but limits could be put on the number a stud can enter. Ten judges from nine countries had the pleasure of assessing the classes. They were Mr Urs Aeschbacher (Switzerland), Mr James Constanti (USA), Ms Claudia Darius (Germany), Mr Greg Gallun (USA), Mr Robbie Den Hartog (Netherlands), Mrs Christine Jamar (Belgium), Mr Luiz Rocco(Brazil), Mrs Marianne Tengstedt (Denmark) and Mrs Cristina Valdes (Spain). Dr Laura Mascagna (Italy) and Ms Line Brunsgaard (Denmark) headed the DC team. The show commenced at 4pm which was just as well as temperatures rose daily, even reaching 35 degrees on the last day, unusually high for the time of year. Abu Dhabi Equestrian Club provides excellent facilities, and judges and competitors spoke very highly of the new surface. The few changes to the seating in the grandstand and the large competitor warm up area were greatly appreciated. Mr Mohammed Al Harbi, Director of EAHS and Vice Chairman of the Higher Organising Committee and Mr Kim Elliott, Director of Abu Dhabi Equestrian Club had pulled out all the stops to ensure an exciting Championship day at which HE Sheikh Zayed bin Hamed Al Nahyan welcomed various guests including HRH Prince Abdulaziz bin Ahmad Al Saud who does so much to support the Arabian horse in all its activities. Championships making a total of sixty five horses for the final day. Of these twenty were stallions for their championship, almost another class! In an Open Championship Judges each select their own choice for Gold, Silver and Bronze plus two others, points are then awarded according to the selections, and scores are totalled to work out the ranking. Not surprisingly with ten judges, only one Gold Champion was unanimous, the Yearling Colt D Shaheer (AJ Marzan – D Shahla) for Dubai Stud with KA Nishan (Shanghai EA – AJ Nazwa) and E.S. Salah (D Mshary – Laminka) taking Silver and Bronze, the ranking remained as in the class. However, the Yearling Filly Championship was rather less straightforward as the class winner and Ajman Show Gold Champion Al Aryam Atab, did not feature at all! Gold went to class second place D Jooreyyah (D Seraj – D Nawal) whilst the 5th placed MDS Hind (Excalibur E.A. – MDS Sheikha) moved up to Silver and 4th placed AJ Al Brraqah 3 (AJ Marzan – AJ Assala) took Bronze. Of course, the class points had been very close the winner on 91.67 and the 5th on 91.25 and it illustrates just how tough these championships can be.

The Junior Filly Championship brought more success for Dubai Stud breeding with D Shu’alah (FA El Rasheem – FT Shaella) now owned by Sheikh Saeed Bin Maktoum Bin Juma Al Maktoum winning Gold, whilst her three year old full sister D Gharam, who had been Gold Champion in the recent UAE Championships took bronze. Meanwhile AJ Barakah (AJ Marzan – Princess of Justice) winner of the three year old class took Silver for Ajman Stud, she had also been Silver at the UAE Championships. This beautiful filly took home the Sheikh Zayed Award for the highest owned and bred horse of the show, her score of 93.17 was also the highest of the show. Two year old Mutabahi Al Hawajer (FA El Rasheem – ZT Magrumi) owned and bred by Dr Ghanem Al Hajri recently Gold at Al Shiraa International Arabian Show repeated the success and was the worthy Gold Junior Colt Champion, he had received a 20 score across the board for Head and Neck. D Shakhat (D Khattaf – D Shireen) took Silver and Bashir Al Bashir (Gallardo J – Nastya OS) winner of the three year old class took the Bronze.
SHOWS AND EVENTS Three sections of mares as usual provided some of the best classes of the show and it proved outstanding for Ajman Stud with AJ Tarim (Emerald J – Espinilla) and AJ Asyad (Marwan Al Shaqab – AJA Angelica) each winning their section then taking the Gold and Bronze respectively, they were separated by Dubai Stud’s D Seeneyyah who is by FA El Rasheem out of one of their most consistent broodmares the straight Egyptian Royal Amira. AJ Tarim had received a very liberal sprinkling of ten 20’s in her class and only one of the ten judges did not choose her for Gold. What a pleasure to judge this fabulous championship. The final championship is always the stallions and it was certainly impressive, most of the ‘boys’ gave an impeccable show, cheered on by the enthusiastic audience. There are not many Arabians that do not look magnificent when they are given the chance to dance and fly round the arena and we were given that treat twenty times before the stallions all returned to the arena for a close comparative inspection. Of course, for the judges it is a huge responsibility selecting these champions, they are setting the standard for the breed. Balancing exceptional type with correct conformation is of such importance, but so too is movement and charisma and this looked a very open “Open Championship”. The wait was nail bitingly long, then finally after judges and officials had been thanked, the results were announced. Gold went to AJ Marzan (AJ Portofino – Hed Ab Maria) a young
stallion already having a considerable influence as a sire, his offspring have been a talking point throughout the season. Ajman Stud also played a part in the Silver Champion Masroor Al Bidayer, who is by AJ Dinar out of Mayasah Al Bidayer owned and bred by Sheikh Mohammed Saoud Al Qassimi. These two stallions had tied on 92.25 points for second and third place in their class and were also equal on type and movement points so the call judge was obliged to split them, AJ Marzan won the day. The Bronze Champion was another homebred horse Moharib Al Khazna (AB Jamil La Piana – Caterina FM) for Mr Ali Ghanem Al Mazrouei and his Bin Humaila Stud. He had even been picked for Gold by one judge, whilst Saudi bred Hatem Athbah (EKS Alihandro – Esperanzza Al Ventur) from Athbah Stud of HRH Prince Abulaziz Bin Ahmad Al Saud also had a Gold nomination and came fourth in this very competitive Championship. And so the last event of February in UAE came to a close, it is always difficult to know how successful changes will be but it is safe to say that Abu Dhabi International returning to its old venue with a strong Organising Committee and the hard working experienced team from EAHS have done a great job, this was an excellent show that ran like clockwork. Marwan Al Shaqab together with his father Gazal Al Shaqab brought Al Shaqab to the highest level in the world. Gazal Al Shaqab stood his first breeding season in 1997. The following year his first foal crop was somewhat small, but impressive. with outstanding foals. His second foal crop in 1999 had just six registered foals and although his foal crop the following year was his smallest, it included his most successful offspring to date. Though few people ever actually saw her during her life,
the "crippled mare", as she was often referred to, became an international celebrity. Even to this day, her name, Ansata Bint Bukra, still invokes awe and admiration. Images of her beautiful countenance continue to inspire journalists, artists, photographers, and breeders of Arabian horses throughout the globe. I believe this story actually began with my love for Silver, a grey pony I first rode when I was only three years old. She was my "first love". Silver made me understand, as I grew older and wiser, that love is the motivating force of the universe. My mother and father always encouraged my equine activities, but it was my beloved Uncle Whit (George Whitwell) who inspired me to overlook handicaps, to look deeper into the soul, and soldier on no matter what. He was only five years old when polio struck him, crippling him thereafter so that he wobbled strangely when he walked. Through him, I understood that some people and creatures come into our experience early in life, some later, but always at a time that connects us to their spirits and provides lessons when we need them. I like to call them "divine appointments". In time, I learned to overlook imperfections and judge on other merits. Love always hovers nearby if we open our hearts and minds. That is the basis for this book!

AN AFFAIR OF THE HEART hen my husband, Don, and I began our quest for Arabian horses while living in the Middle East, we committed ourselves to learning as much as possible about the breed. In 1959, we visited the Egyptian Agricultural Organization's El Zahraa Stud, and purchased three yearlings who were to influence Arabian horse breeding worldwide: Ansata Ibn Halima, Ansata Bint Mabrouka, and Ansata Bint Zaafarana. A year later, we returned.

BLOODLINE The remarkable sire, Nazeer, whom we had seen in 1959, had passed away. As we walked through the pastures, my eyes fastened on one of his daughters. She was a stunning yearling filly, but she hobbled awkwardly around a sandy paddock. She was badly crippled; her pelvis was knocked down, her hind leg had atrophied, she had knots on her front legs… but she had the "star quality" that our friend and fellow Arabian horse breeder Mike Nichols once told me about. She also had an extraordinary dam, Bukra, whom she resembled in type. There was an immediate attraction between us and I knew this lovely filly and I were destined to be together. Thus began an affair of the heart.
After overcoming several obstacles (as related in the book), she finally came to America. Husnia “The Beautiful” as she was named in Egypt, became the cherished foundation mare of Ansata Arabian Stud and she eventually became a living legend in America and worldwide under her new name, Ansata Bint Bukra, which translates as, “Life’s Daughter of Tomorrow”. Thanks to her, my understanding of the courage, fortitude, and stamina inherent in Egyptian Arabian mares deepened over time. LESSONS LEARNED As I look back over more than 60 years with Egyptian Arabian horses, I realize how many lessons I've learned from them - especially the mares. The year 2019 marked the sixtieth year since "Husnia", Ansata Bint Bukra, came into the world. While writing her story, I remembered something I once wrote, and that the Arab poets Al Mutannabi and Al Jahiz, as well as the world famous author Walter Farley would agree with, “Inspiration comes to artists, photographers, musicians, and writers from many subjects, but it is a passion to express ourselves and to exalt that which touches our souls that drives us to create something memorable.� I might also add, it is this same passion that keeps us striving for perfection - especially in breeding Arabian horses.
