On March 5, 2022 the world lost an equine giant, an icon of the Arabian breed. We all knew that one sad day he would have to leave us, but when that day arrived, it came as a great shock - Laheeb, the gold standard in the world of straight Egyptian Arabians, was gone.

Laheeb was one of those rare remarkable stallions that are simply ‘larger than life’ – not only stunningly beautiful, noble and charismatic, but also a tremendous sire of great significance

worldwide. He was a horse that made history, time after time. For many he embodied the very essence of the ideal Arabian horse and perfectly captured both its physical and spiritual qualities. He left us just weeks after celebrating his twenty-sixth birthday, and the depth of his loss is still keenly felt not only by his family at Ariela but by the highest echelon of professional horsemen and the greater Arabian public worldwide. No one alive today who has an affection for the Arabian breed is unfamiliar with the name Laheeb. And that fact alone says it all…

Foaled on 2 January 1996 at Ariela Arabians in Israel, Laheeb seemed born to be a star and was the farm’s first homebred to earn international acclaim. His sire needs little introduction – the highly decorated and universally acclaimed Americanbred straight Egyptian stallion and Paris World Champion Imperial Imdal (Ansata Imperial x Dalia). Imperial Imdal spent three years at Ariela on lease and left his undeniable stamp not just on the Ariela herd but across the entirety of Israel’s then scant Arabian horse population.

Laheeb’s dam was the celebrated American-bred straight Egyptian AK Latifa (Ibn Moniet el Nefous x Siralima), tracing back to El Dahma (Harkan x Aziza) through Bint Bint Sabbah (Baiyad x Bint Sabah), chosen and imported by the farm as a foundation mare, making Laheeb Dahman Shahwan in strain. He was strongly linebred on both the top and bottom of his pedigree to Morafic (ex Mabrouka

by Sid Abouhom) and Ansata Ibn Halima (ex Halima by Sheikh el Arab), two of Nazeer’s (Mansour x Bint Samiha) most influential sons, and also a grandson of US National Champion Stallion Ansata Ibn Sudan (Ansata Ibn Halima x Ansata Bint Mabrouka). Through his dam Laheeb traced to the important broodmare sire Sirecho (Nasr x Exochorda), a source of rare and valuable old Egyptian blood. In short, Laheeb was bred to be a breeding stallion.

Laheeb proved himself a remarkable colt almost from birth and made a great impression at just three months old on the late breeder and international judge, Dr Nasr Marei, one of the very first Arabian breeders from Egypt to visit Ariela.

Nasr described the colt as “elegant, independent, and full of confidence.” He would never forget that special colt, and the two were fated to meet again.

At nine months old Laheeb became one of the very first Israeli-bred horses to compete for international titles at the Middle Eastern Championship show in Amman, Jordan, where he won Best Arabian Foal at Foot. As a yearling he was Israeli National Champion Colt and the high-scoring horse at that same show. He was soon off to start a European show campaign, handled throughout by veteran Arabian halter trainer Frank Spönle of Germany. During the 1999 European show season Laheeb garnered several championship titles including Kauber Platte Junior Champion, Top Five at the World Championships in Europe in Paris, and European Reserve Junior Champion Colt in Verona. But it was at his first European show, the prestigious 1998 All Nations’ Cup in Aachen where Laheeb placed first in his age class, that he captured the attention of two of Poland’s most experienced horsemen and started his trajectory towards international fame.

BLOODLINE Marek Trela, Director of Stadnina Koni Janów Podlaski, and Jerzy Białobok, Director of Stadnina Koni Michałów in Poland were so impressed with the youngster that they approached Ariela about leasing him to serve as guest chief sire at Michałów in 1999 and then at Janów Podlaski the following year. One should remember that, back in the day, the idea of a straight Egyptian stallion serving as chief sire at a Polish State Stud was a novel one, to put it delicately. The opportunity being offered to such a young and still unproven straight Egyptian stallion – to cover many of the world’s most valuable pure Polish mares – sent what amounted to seismic shockwaves throughout the industry.

But the Polish Stud Directors had found in Laheeb what they thought was almost a perfect representative of the Saklawi I (Nazeer) sire line; one who both exemplified and could reproduce the Polish ideal of all that an Arabian horse should be – typey and elegant, with long harmonious lines and good movement. They could already imagine Laheeb’s potential contribution based on their past success with Palas (Aswan x Panel by Nil), a Nazeer grandson of 75% Egyptian blood, and were willing to be bold. Jerzy referred to Laheeb as “a horseman’s horse”, and in a 2013 interview published in Arabian Horse World, he praised the stallion, describing how “… Laheeb sired mares in the Saklawi type – very beautiful and good broodmare material.”

Although revolutionary at its time, the idea today, over two decades later, seems a given, almost patently obvious just by observing what Laheeb accomplished there. Perhaps the truest measure of his success was that, after evaluating his get, the Poles continued and continue to today to infuse Egyptian blood into their program through sires representing the Saklawi I sire line.

Laheeb’s more famous Polish-bred get include a number of national, international, and World Champions such as his sons Poganin (ex Pohulanka by Pepton), Złocień (ex Zaleta

by Piechur), and Emiliusz (ex Emocja by Monogramm), and his daughters Emira (ex Embra by Monogramm), Galilea (ex Georgia by Monogramm), Dumka (ex Dąbrowa by Probat), Wieża Babel (ex Wiazma by Arbil), Siklawa (ex Siewka by Eldon), and Eloida (ex Ekspedycja by Falsyfikat). A few precious daughters sold well at Poland’s prestigious Pride of Poland production sales, including the Janów mare Siklawa who went to Qatar and the Michałów mares Egea (ex Egna

by Eukaliptus) and Ellissara (ex Ekscella by Monogramm) who went to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Laheeb proved so valuable in Poland that some there developed a very covetous view of him, maintaining that Poland was his true home, because only at the Polish State Studs were there enough great mares truly deserving of his attention. In fact, Michałów Stud Directors Urszula and Jerzy Białobok were impressed enough with Laheeb’s progeny to negotiate an historic lease which brought him back to Michałów for the 2008 breeding season.

Unfortunately, during his second stay at Michałów the majority of his progeny were colts.

One might never guess by looking at him but following Laheeb’s first stay in Poland, he suffered a tragic and lifethreatening accident. At just four years old, the young stallion would now face the most difficult challenge of his short lifetime. The Ariela team had decided to attempt to freeze Laheeb’s semen before his return home because the technology was not yet available in Israel, and in November 2000, Laheeb was sent to an equine centre in Germany.

Tragically, a tease mare kicked him in the right foreleg, breaking the limb at the elbow. Since the actual joint was involved, it was impossible for Laheeb to bring the leg forward or to walk. His prognosis was thought to be very poor, and the German experts advised euthanasia.

Chen Kedar recalls how difficult it would have been for her to face seeing Laheeb in such a condition and instead sent Dr Giora Avni, the farm vet, to Germany to consult directly

with the surgeons. The two firmly agreed that Laheeb should receive every possible opportunity despite the poor prognosis, and the decision was made to go forward with a very delicate surgery involving the placement of metal plates and screws into the leg at the elbow joint. If surgery succeeded, the leg would have to remain off the ground for a long time afterwards. Following surgery and throughout the entire ordeal, Laheeb’s phenomenal character made all the difference. He demonstrated amazing courage and tolerated whatever was asked of him. A model patient, he stoically accepted the pain and the physical restraints necessary to remain immobile. Despite Laheeb’s complete cooperation, the bone itself became badly infected and once again the experts advised euthanasia, believing that the stallion would not make it.

After countless long distance calls to experts from all over the world, another fateful decision was made. “We asked the clinic not to put Laheeb down, so that a second surgery could be performed,” recalls Chen. “This time the plates were removed to let the bones knit together as best they could. Our strategy was to try to at least salvage Laheeb as a breeding horse. The final outcome would depend mostly on Laheeb’s own determination and toughness, with an added element of luck.”

he could neither walk nor turn around. He was also kept as thin as possible to keep weight off the affected leg. Chen describes being shocked and extremely pessimistic when she travelled to see him. “I thought I was ready to see Laheeb in bad condition, but I could not believe it when I saw him; he was half the size he used to be. And I never saw a horse cringe so much.”

Laheeb spent about nine months at the clinic and later went to a special rehabilitation centre for another six months, where he continued to recover and underwent intense physical therapy. But no one could predict whether or not the horse would ever be sound again.

Then came a glimmer of hope. Frank phoned Chen after a visit to the clinic; he had been surprised at how well Laheeb looked. He suggested that perhaps it would be possible to show him again in the future. Chen remained skeptical and awaited Laheeb’s shipment back to Israel, which took place in May 2002.

As it turned out, Frank proved to be a good prophet and Laheeb was well enough to compete at the 2003 Israeli Nationals. Chen described how surreal it was to be standing once again in a show-ring with Laheeb: “… and Laheeb was there standing beside us, standing on all four legs – perfectly sound! It was an incredibly emotional, unforgettable moment for us both, and it seemed only fitting that Laheeb was the judges’ unanimous choice for 2003 Israeli National Champion Stallion.”

Although much of his siring career took place abroad, Laheeb sired close to two hundred foals in Israel and is still a leading Israeli sire of show champions and winners. Many of his Israeli-born get have competed successfully in some of the world’s toughest competitions abroad. His very first foals arrived in 1999 and among them was an exceptionally exotic and refined colt called Al Lahab, out of Ariela’s own Thee Desperado (The Minstril x AK Amiri Asmarr) daughter The Vision HG (ex Belle Star by The Minstril). Al Lahab was destined to grow up to become one of the world’s most highly decorated stallions, holding, among others, the titles of World Champion Stallion, All Nations’ Cup Champion, and Dubai International Arabian Horse Show Champion and has established himself as a major international sire for his owners, the Friedmann family of Germany.

The cross of Laheeb with The Vision HG was repeated several times and the results consistently proved excellent, producing one daughter, the exquisite mare Al Halah AA. Through Al Halah’s daughter Helwah AA (by Al Ayad by Moheeb) and granddaughter EKS Bint Helwah, also by Laheeb, traces the 2019 World Champion Colt EKS Farajj (Ibn Farid x EKS Bint Helwah). Farajj is a great example of the excellent results achieved by linebreeding to Laheeb. Al Halah’s four full brothers Al Lahab, Al Hadiyah AA (now deceased), Al Raheeb AA, and Al Wahab AA, went on to succeed in show-rings in Israel and abroad. Each then went on to establish himself as a highly sought-after breeding sire for major programs the world over.

Ariela still retains the youngest of the four, Al Wahab AA for their own program, and this exciting horse is currently on lease in Spain with Phillip Looyens of the Shiodome Group who commented: “When we heard about the possibility of leasing Al Wahab AA, the decision for us at Shiodome was very quickly made. Knowing his pedigree well, being admirers of Laheeb’s complete look and the consistency of the Ariela program, we believe Al Wahab AA, with his smooth conformation, small ears and big black eyes, can contribute to any breeding program, from straight Egyptian to mixed blood programs around the world.”

It goes beyond the scope of this tribute to list all of the national and international champions that Laheeb sired in Israel, but one particular mare must be mentioned: the straight Egyptian Laheeb daughter Badawiyeh AA out of Bahiha (Baahir x Imperial Imtiarah), Junior Female Champion at the Israeli Egyptian Event and also Israeli National Champion Filly. Although Israel and the UAE only established formal diplomatic relations through the Abraham Accords in 2020, it was over ten years earlier that Badawiyeh was quietly purchased by the Ajman Stud, UAE, with the help of European middlemen. She went on to win several prestigious championship titles in the Arabian Gulf as well as Europe for her Emirati owners. This beautiful Laheeb daughter proved the old adage that Arabian horses can, and do, bring people together in extraordinary ways.

Renowned American judge, breeder and bloodstock agent Raymond Mazzei, a respected world authority on Polish bloodlines, noted the consistency of Laheeb’s first Polish get while they were still very young. He finally got his chance to

see their sire first-hand during a private visit to Israel in 2003 and recalls: “I was so completely taken with Laheeb that it made no difference to me what his breeding was; I already knew his foals, and I realized that I was looking at a major phenomenon.”

Raymond returned to Israel one year later to serve on the judging panel that would eventually award Laheeb with his third Israeli National Championship title. Following the show, he proposed to Laheeb’s owners that the horse should travel to America to stand at public stud under his own management. A deal was struck with Ariela Arabians and Laheeb flew to California during the summer of 2005 to prepare for the 2006 and 2007 breeding seasons at Furioso Farms and Ferlita Arabians.

Raymond always maintained, and still believes, that Laheeb was the most important Arabian breeding stallion of his generation and remains forever grateful to Ariela for entrusting him with their treasured stallion: “Laheeb is a rare ‘cross-over’ stallion,” he explained to me in an earlier interview. “He was not only able to create great straight Egyptians, but was so prepotent in type, style, quality, and movement that he improved horses from whatever Arabian strain he was used on.

“Although Laheeb represented what is best in the straight Egyptians, he passed on none of the straight Egyptians’ typical weaknesses. Laheeb had it all: unsurpassed breed type; dignified presence; an ultra-exotic, perfectly proportioned

head; a high-set, gracefully arched neck; superb balance and strength of coupling; smooth shoulders and quarters of good length, strength and slope; a well-muscled, horizontal topline with a highly placed and proudly carried tail; good three-dimensional substance with plentiful width, depth and muscular development; squarely placed limbs with clean, dense bone and wide sinewy tendons; and a free-moving, animated stride with a distinct aristocratic carriage.”

While in America Laheeb was shown only once, at the prestigious Egyptian Event in Lexington, Kentucky, where he was awarded the title 2006 Egyptian Event Reserve Supreme Champion Stallion behind his own son, Al Lahab.

In February 2008, after finishing his breeding obligations in California, Laheeb once again headed for Michałów Stud in Poland.

Laheeb’s story seemed almost to come full circle when Egyptian breeder Dr Nasr Marei again visited Israel as one of three distinguished judges presiding over the 2007 Israeli National Championship Show. When the final results were in, four out of the eight national champions selected turned out to be sired by Laheeb. In a previous interview, Nasr recalled feeling: “... kind of proud of myself… for not having been wrong in my first assessment of Laheeb eleven years earlier, at just three months old.”

When he left Israel following the show, Nasr was wondering how he might incorporate Laheeb’s blood into his own straight Egyptian program. Deciding he had nothing to lose, he telephoned Chen who immediately agreed to an historic

lease exchange. This deal sent Laheeb to Egypt and Nasr’s own stallion, the Australian-bred Simeon Sharav (Asfour x Simeon Shuala), to Israel and established a precedent for future lease exchanges between Israel and Egypt.

“The second time I ever laid eyes on Laheeb was at the Cairo International Airport, the day he arrived to stay with me for a breeding season,” Nasr recalled. “From the moment I saw him, I was awestruck. He looked so impressive, gentle, magnificent, and regal. I hugged him and rushed him to the farm, to his new, freshly painted stall that gave him a view of the garden and swimming pool. I could look down from my bedroom window and see him there, enjoying the beautiful garden. He was flanked by my two major stallions, Farid Albadeia (Ameer Albadeia x Farida) and Magd Albadeia (Rashdan x Bint Makhsous). An awesome trio. I was extremely proud and thankful to have them at my farm.

“Laheeb is a dream horse. He is beautiful, very complete and without defects. His disposition is unbelievable. I have never seen a stallion as gentle and peaceful as Laheeb, all without losing a bit of any of the traits that you want in a stallion. He is tremendously charismatic and always the perfect gentleman.”

Following his stay in Egypt, Laheeb ended his globetrotting abroad and from then on remained at home in Israel where he was heavily used on the farm herd and by other Israeli breeders. Laheeb had a lot of siring waiting for him back home, and although we cannot cover all of his more recent Ariela progeny, we can touch on some of the most prominent.

The farm had prepared for Laheeb’s return by purchasing mares specifically with him in mind, in particular, the American-bred straight Egyptian Mishaal HP (Ansata Sinan x Mesoudah M) daughter Saniyyah RCA (ex My

Saniyyah’s tail female line is bred quite similarly to that of Laheeb’s, and the two nicked extremely well, producing the full sisters Safiyyah AA and Salsabil AA. Safiyyah was a Gold Champion Filly and is the dam of three straight Egyptian champion fillies, Sinaya AA (by Frasera Mashar) Sajida AA and 2021 Israel Egyptian Event Gold Champion Filly Sanaa AA (by Al Ayal AA), as well as the lovely Egyptian-cross fillies Sarai AA (by Jyar Meia Lua) and Sarah AA (by Emerald J). Her younger sister, Salsabil AA, has had a stellar show career, garnering prestigious Gold Champion Filly titles in Israel, Germany, and Belgium. The Ariela team had hoped that Salsabil would produce as well as Safiyyah, but unfortunately, as of today she has produced no living foals.

Laheeb’s influence is also strongly felt through his progeny from The Vision HG’s Baahir (Ibn el Mareekh x GF Nasra Bataa) daughter Al Baraqai AA, producing offspring of enormous importance to the Ariela program. Al Baraqai AA’s Laheeb daughter Baraaqa AA was bred to Al Ayad to produce the internationally acclaimed show stallion Baha AA, who won gold championship titles in Israel and Germany before going on to be named Supreme Champion at the USA Egyptian Event, Gold Champion at the European Egyptian Event, and Scottsdale unanimous Gold Champion at the International Egyptian Breeder’s Classic.

Baraaqa AA is also the dam of Badriyah AA (by Nader Al Jamal), dam of the 2019 straight Egyptian World Champion Colt Baahir AA, sired by Al Ayal.

The Laheeb x Al Baraqai AA cross also produced the beautiful mares Basmah AA and Balqis AA. Basmah is a Gold Champion Filly in Israel and Silver and Bronze Medal winner in Europe and has established her own prolific family including foals sold to Italy, South Africa, and Qatar. Balqis AA is one of Laheeb’s youngest daughters, and recently started her broodmare career by foaling a lovely grey filly by Kenz Al Baydaa ( Jamil al Rayyan x Kareemah Saqr); just a few days ago she was bred to Al Ayal.

The Laheeb daughter Malikah AA, an Israeli Bronze Champion out of Atiq Adara (Al Ayad x Alhambra B), established a valuable family at Ariela Arabians including Israel Egyptian Event Gold Colt Foal Mameluk AA (by Frasera Mashar) and full brothers Mahab Al Lahab and Marzuk AA (by Nader Al Shamal AA), before her sale overseas. The farm is retaining her daughters Nile Maha AA (by Ansata Nile Pharaoh) and Malikat AA (by Kenz Al Baydaa) to preserve her bloodlines in the Ariela herd.

Another mare that crossed exceedingly well with Laheeb is Nashwah AA (Al Ayad x Insha Sha Latifa) out of the Ariela homebred Naffada (Imperial Imdal x Imperial

Naffata); their first offspring was the colt Laheeb Al Nar, an individual of extraordinary charisma and quality, and presumably Laheeb’s heir apparent. Unfortunately, he was tragically lost very young after garnering several Israeli Gold Colt titles. His full sister, the ultra-exotic mare Nefertiti AA, placed at the prestigious European Egyptian Event as a yearling and just last month began her breeding career by producing Nasmah AA, an outstanding filly of tremendous promise sired by Moaiz Al Baydaa (Ezz Ezzain x Magda Sakr

by Tallahsman). This filly is so far the star of this year’s foal crop and appears to have a bright future ahead of her.

The Egyptian-cross mare Dafina AA (Al Bilal x Dumka by Laheeb) carries on the Polish branch of Laheeb’s progeny at Ariela Arabians. She is the dam of Daliyah AA (by Nader al Jamal), Durar AA (by Gazal al Shaqab), Israeli Silver Champion Mare Damdiyah AA (by Ajman Moniscione), Daania AA (by GT Shardh), and Dinarah AA (by Emerald J). Considered one of the farm’s finest mares, Israeli Silver Champion Damdiyah AA is the dam of two fillies: the overseas champion Despina AA (by Jyar Meia Lua) and the elegant Darine AA (by Emerald J).

Finally, the exotic Shams Sharav AA (Simeon Sharav x Saniyyah RCA) son Shams al Din AA, out of the Laheeb daughter Raliya (ex Sahara PG by Botswana) is a Gold Champion both in Israel and South Africa, where he recently finished his lease to Elkasun Arabians. Shams al Din AA is very reminiscent of Laheeb, with his long legs, excellent neck and shoulder, and very dry and refined head. He is an irreplaceable element in Ariela’s future breeding plans and we await his first Israeli foal crop with great interest.

During his lifetime Laheeb sired almost three hundred foals worldwide and with every passing year his global impact proves ever more impressive: At the 2017 German National Championship Show, three different Laheeb sons sired champions: Sorella El Hadiyah, sired by Al Hadiyah AA (Laheeb x The Vision HG) was named Gold Champion Mare; Alia Lahab RSA and F Tayyar Ibn Al Lahab, both sired by Al Lahab, were Silver Champion Mare and Silver Champion Stallion respectively; and the Bronze Champion Stallion was El Ninjo, sired by the Polish-bred Emiliusz.

And finally, 2019 Paris World Champion and Aachen Gold Champion Colt, EKS Farajj, bred by Willie and Lisa Brown of Elkasun Arabians in South Africa and owned by AlKhashab Stud in Kuwait, is also strongly linebred a Laheeb.

by Elkasun from Ariela. This year Ariela will breed some of their own mares to Farajj in order to incorporate more Laheeb blood back into their herd from a new and novel direction.

Throughout his lifetime Laheeb proved not only to be a sire of show champions but also a sire of the very highest calibre of breeding stock, making the sheer scope of his global legacy nearly unfathomable. Now that his loss has been fully realized and accepted, Chen can fondly look back and reminisce about this special stallion: “More than a quarter of a century has gone by in the blink of an eye and it seems that only yesterday, on a cold and dark winter night in 1996, he was born. We named him Laheeb, ‘the flame’ in Arabic; a name that suited him very well.

In the world of Arabian horses, Christine Jamar-Demeersseman surely needs no introduction. In almost 45 years of being actively involved in the Arabian horse breeding industry, Christine has become an accomplished breeder and the owner of the world famous Jadem Arabians as well as an experienced international judge and a true equine expert. Believe it or not, this is just a start of the long list of her amazing achievements. Even greater thing about her lies in the fact that she does not keep all the knowledge exclusively to herself but is happy to share what she has learnt over the years with the next generations of breeders. Without hesitation, Christine reveals the secrets of her spectacular success in the field of Arabian horse breeding.

Kamila: You have bred Arabian horses for almost 45 years now. What is the secret of your success?

Christine: I would say it was a combination of different factors.

First of all, I have been studying a lot as well as listening to the people who have proved to be successful breeders. Secondly, whenever I am at a show, I always take a close look at every horse. For the past 45 years, the type in Arabian horses has changed so much that it is crucial to keep yourself updated on the current standard. And last but not least, I have bred a lot myself, constantly seeking improvement in my herd. In my opinion, to become a successful breeder, you need to work very hard and never give up because breeding horses involves high

level of unpredictability and it does not always go according to the plan. Some years, you end up with 70% foals being colts and this is something that cannot be predicted or easily fixed.

In such a case, you need to make difficult decisions when it comes to the remaining 30% of your foals because you need the fillies to continue the dam lines but you also need to sell some of them to make your breeding operation financially viable. As hard as it might seem, breeding it is not only about winning but also about making money if you want to keep it going and it is not always easy to achieve both. Luckily, I have always had my own breeding vision which also helped me in becoming successful.

Kamila: If you were to summarize the breeding vision of Jadem Arabians in one sentence, what would that be?

Christine: My goal is to produce typey horses with correct conformation and excellent movement. In other words, I have been trying to achieve the perfect balance between refinement and correctness of built. First of all, the outcome of my breeding vision needs to be a correct horse that you are able to put a saddle on and ride and only after this there comes type and refinement, never the other way round. There has always been an image in my head of the horse that I would like to breed and I am trying to bring it to life. Of course, this image has evolved with time to keep up with the changing standard but I am still trying very hard to breed an actual horse rather than a living statue.

Kamila: You have a big selection of stallions in your offer.

Do you apply the same principles for choosing a stallion to be represented by Jadem Arabians?

Christine: Absolutely! As I have already mentioned, the correctness of conformation has always been of utmost importance to me. Type, attitude and movement are also crucial but first of all the horse needs to be correct and complete, which is not so easy to find these days. The problem often found in very refined Arabians is weaker muscles, which is a consequence of the skeleton being thinner than normal. For this reason, we sometimes need to compromise. At the moment, we have a big variety of stallions representing different bloodlines so that everybody can choose one according to which qualities in a mare need to be improved. If the stallion has a softer back but at the same time produces long necks, and this is something that you would like to improve in your mare, you should choose a mare with a shorter back and hope the cross will produce the expected result. Sometimes it does, sometimes it does not. This is what breeding is all about.

Kamila: Your great collection has been recently enriched with some newcomers. Please tell us a bit about the new additions to the Jadem Arabians collection and what makes them stand out among so many breeding stallions available worldwide?

Christine: We are really excited to have introduced some new stallions from South-America that represent different bloodlines. One of them is Haash OSB (Dominic M x Partyssima OSB / Sir Fames HBV). So far, we have been very pleased with his offspring and I am really excited to see how he crossed with the mares of the Polish state studs. One great thing about him is that up till now 80% of his produce are fillies. Another interesting addition is RFI Unique (AF Maden x RFI Ultraa Almaktub / RFI Maktub), a beautiful bay stallion with an amazing face, beautiful eyes and swanlike neck. Last but not least, the youngest of these newcomers

is the two-year old ALK Retajj, Gold Campion and highest scoring yearling colt of the World Cup Show. He is by the amazing AJ Radman and out of LR Domenica, one of the best Dominic M daughters.

Kamila: Talking about bloodlines, which horses have had the strongest influence on your breeding programme?

Christine: When it comes to stallions, the ones that had the greatest influence in the early days of our existence were surely the two excellent Polish studs, Eukaliptus (Bandos x Eunice / Comet) bred by Janów Podlaski and Ekstern (Monogramm x Ernestyna / Piechur) bred by Michałów. More recently, Extreme (Ararat x Elegantkah / Gwizd) and Emerald J (QR Marc x Emandoria / Gazal Al Shaqab), two stallions of our own breeding but still representing mostly Polish lines, have mainly been used to improve our herd.

Kamila: And what about the mares? Which ones have proven to be the most valuable broodmares?

Christine: Over the years, we have managed to establish some very valuable families in our stud. The basis for our breeding programme were Ekstern daughters and then their daughters by Extreme. The fantastic flea-bitten D Aziza owned by Nayla Hayek is out of our Midnight Kiss J, who is an Extreme daughter out of an excellent Ekstern daughter Mauhiba J. Midnight Kiss J was later sold to Dubai Stud but we retained her full sister Magnificent Lady J who extended this dam line at Jadem Arabians. Another very precious family is that of Georgia (Eukaliptus x Galia / Gil). Her daughter Gomera J (by Ekstern) is the dam of triple crown champion Gallardo J (by Emerald J).

Kamila: Speaking of champions, in the long history of Jadem Arabians, your horses have won many awards.

Which one is the most important to you and why?

Christine: For me, it is the European Champion title won

by Gallardo J as he represents the fifth generation of our own breeding programme. What is more, he is the progeny of two horses that I truly love, the beautiful bay Emerald J and the above-mentioned Gomera J, an elegant Ekstern daughter who represents a very precious dam line.

Kamila: This is an amazing achievement for a breeder and surely it was a memorable moment for you. Any other amazing memories in the long history of Jadem Arabians?

Christine: I have so many it would be impossible to list them all. Every baby that is born and meets or exceeds our expectations becomes a great memory. The image strongly imprinted in my mind is related to an exquisite Extreme daughter out of Morning Light VF. Her name was Mysterious Lady J and she was special since the day she was

born. I remember her playing in the field together with Bess Fa’izah (WH Justice x Sharon El Kendal / ASS Kendal), whom I bought as a baby. It was a spectacular view. They both were so special. Bess Fa’izah was later sold to HH Sheikh Ammar Bin Humaid Al Nuaimi and became 2006 World Champion Junior Filly and 2010 World Champion Senior Mare, while Mysterious Lady J won the title of European Reserve Champion Filly in 2008. Another great memory for me is when Emerald J and Gallardo J won champion titles in Dubai. Father and son, both bred by Jadem Arabians, standing on the podium at such a prestigious show was a moment that I will never forget.

Kamila: You have bred some outstanding horses and you used some legendary stallions at your stud. Is there any historical horse that you would like to introduce into your breeding programme but it is no longer possible? What qualities could this horse potentially improve in your herd?

Christine: It is a really difficult question as the type and standard have changed so much that the horses of the past may no longer fit your breeding programme. One horse that has come to my mind is Pohaniec (Comet x Planeta / Nabor), bred by Michałów Stud and sold to Blommerod Arabian Stud of Sweden. He was the sire of Probat (x Borexia / Exelsjor) and a very strong horse. Generally, it was a very interesting bloodline producing strong and correct horses.

This is the reason I am still trying to use Gwizd (Probat x Gwiazda / Elf ) in my breeding programme as I still have his frozen semen. Gwizd has the potential to improve the movement, the neck and the general conformation. When it comes to breeding, sometimes you need to take one step back to take two steps forward.

Kamila: You have bred and owned so many horses in your life. Which horse is your personal favourite and why?

Christine: It may be hard to believe but I have no favourites and the truth is that I have never had. I love all my horses. It is mainly due to the fact that I only keep the ones that I love or the ones that make me happy because they have turned out to be outstanding producers.

Kamila: But surely as any other Arabian horse enthusiast you must have met a horse in your life that made your heart beat faster?

Christine: Plenty! But the one that immediately comes to my mind is the Polish mare Pilarka (Palas x Pierzga / Negatiw), 1983 World Champion Senior Mare. She was an incredible and very complete mare with amazing attitude and groundcovering trot. Among all the amazing Arabian horses that I have met in my life, this is the one I will never forget.

Kamila: And what about stallions? Can you name one that takes your breath away every time you see him?

Christine: In the past, it was always Ekstern who unfortunately passed away not that long ago. Even at an older age, he was such a spectacular stallion. At the moment, it is also my own beautiful boy, Emerald J, an incredibly masculine and charismatic show horse who keeps taking my breath away every time, no matter how often I see him.

Kamila: We all know there is no ideal horse but there are so many close to perfection. With your excellent eye for Arabians, can you name one that you consider the epitome of the Arabian breed?

Christine: Again, it is a very difficult question. Luckily, the perfect horse does not exist because the breeding would make no sense anymore. However, to me Ekstern was the one closest to perfection. He had his faults as any other horse but he also had this perfect balance between type and conformation that is so important to me and what is more, he passed it onto his progeny.

Kamila: No doubt he was special. A horse like Ekstern is born once in a lifetime. He also contributed a lot to the success of your breeding programme. As such a successful breeder, have you still got any dreams in relation to Arabian horses?

Christine: I do and I have had this dream for a long time.

It probably comes as no surprise that it is to breed more outstanding colts and fillies. I always seek improvement and I wish I get closer and closer to the vision of an ideal Arabian horse that I have had in my head for a while.

Kamila: Where do you see Jadem Arabians in 5 years from now?

Christine: I wish my dream becomes reality and some of these horses that I have in my head will become part of my herd.

Maybe then I will have a new vision that will keep me going.

Most people will agree with Christine that success does not come easy and a clear vision of what one wants to achieve is a must. However, establishing aims and goals is just the first step on the way which must be followed by actions. This is why, hardworking and lifelong learning Christine has never given up although there were times when she learnt the difficult art of breeding the hard way. She has always strived for excellence in any venture she undertook and this is how she managed to build one of the most recognized breeding programmes in the world and breed some remarkable representatives of the Arabian breed. Without doubt, with Christine’s knowledge, passion, devotion and determination, this perfect Arabian horse that for now is just an image in her head will soon become reality. q

Białka Arabian State Stud 1981-2022

The years 1980 - 1981 - difficult beginnings in the shadow of great history

Located in the vicinity of Krasnystaw, Białka has been known since 1930 as the State Stallion Stud. Till the end of the eighties, Białka Stallion Stud served as a breeding centre for Anglo arabian halfbreed horses by maintaining a herd of stallions kept there to satisfy the needs of that race. Simultaneously, from 1981 the Purebred Arabian State Stud has become an inherent symbol of Białka. Great interest in the Polish Arabian horses among foreign buyers as well as high prices obtained for these horses are frequently presented as the only reason for establishing in Białka a fourth Arabian State Stud. And yet, the truth is far more complex, as there were other important factors that triggered the

decision to establish in Białka another Arabian State Stud, side by side with the existing State Stallion Stud. On the one hand, very favourable climate conditions conducive to breeding horses as well as rich pastures proved as very important factors speaking for Białka. On the other hand, the second half of the seventies witnessed a steadily declining demand for stallions servicing the area, which prompted a considerable decrease in the herd of stallions kept there. By the end of the seventies, a number of buildings were put out of use in Białka – stable 3 was vacant-and the Stallion Stud was facing a very difficult economic situation. Therefore, the decision was made to create in Białka an Arabian stud in order

to exploit fully the rich feed base, buildings and a very well trained, specialised work force available there. The people behind that decision were Adam Sosnowski, then Manager at the Horse Breeding Division and his collaborators Izabela Zawadzka, Jerzy Budny and Kazimierz Guziuk, at that time the director of Białka State Stallion Stud. That decision also proved very advantageous to the already existing Arabian State Studs in Janów, Michałów and Kurozwęki, as these could in this way dispose of their breeding surplus caused by a diminishing demand for Arabian horses noted then on foreign markets. The first 20 Purebred Arabian mares and one foal arrived to Białka State Stallion Stud in November 1981, constituting the founding herd of the fourth State Arabian Stud in Poland. Next year, the first Purebred Arabian foals were born in Białka, hence, the year 1982 is sometimes considered as the foundation year of Białka Arabian State Stud. Especially worth underlining here is the important role played by Manager Adam Sosnowski, who passed to the history of the Polish horse breeding thanks to his great merits during the war as well during the post war reconstruction and reorganization of the Polish horse breeding. Born in Podole and raised among horses under the eye of his father, Adam Nałęcz-Sosnowski was especially fond of the Arabian horses. His father, Kalikst Sosnowski occupied the post of the Director of State Stallion Stud in Białka till his tragic death on September 12th, 1939.

Numerous war merits of Adam Sosnowski encompassed, among other things, recovery and identification of Ofirka, a mare of great merit to the Polish breeding, as well as recovery of many horses dispersed from private breeding in the south of Poland. In 1956 Adam Sosnowski was entrusted the task of choosing Arabian mares out of the group of horses that arrived to Wrocław from the Tiersk Stud. Four mares were bought then: Potencja, Pikirowka, Pienoczka and Piewica.

The most valuable of them proved Piewica and Pienoczka, whose descendant is the distinguished sire Probat. The other one, Piewica, was the daughter of Włodarka, robbed

by Russians from the Janów Stud. Piewica not only enabled the reintroduction to Poland of the lost dam family of Szemrajówka, d.b. 1810 originating from Biała Cerkiew, but she also founded in Janów and subsequently in Białka

the most famous Polish dam line, often called the „P” family. Apart from the famous Pianissima in Janów, the „P” family gave such Białka stars as Perforacja, Pesal, Perfirka and Perfinka. Adam Sosnowski took up in 1972 the position of Manager at the Horse Breeding Division. He was personally in charge of the State breeding of Arabian horses, as Adam Sosnowski paid special attention to the breeding of that horse race. His decisions referring both to breeding and organizational issues were of a visionary character, like for example importing to Poland the stallion Probat in order to reintroduce in Poland the lost sire family of Kuhailan Afas db. His decision to establish an Arabian Stud in Białka revealed not only his sagacity, but also his ability to foresee correctly possible changes in the business cycle. Adam Sosnowski was a proponent of the idea to divide the basic herd of the Purebred Arabian horses in order to use different envioronmental conditions on smaller populations. From the present perspective it can clearly be seen that Białka avoided the fate of other Stallion Studs put to liquidation during the ninities only thanks to the fact that it possessed an Arabian Stud. That Arabian State Stud gained the status of a strategic state-owned limited liability company, which enabled the Stud with the valuable facility of Białka to survive for another 40 years, hoping for more.

In order to get the feeling of the reality accompanying the initial years of Białka Arabian State Stud, one has to remember that the eighties in Poland witnessed the birth of Solidarity and other great socio-political movements in 1981. The tragic decade that followed was marked by the state of war, economic crisis and widespread poverty.

The situation changed only in 1989 with the partially free elections and the withdrawal from Poland of Soviet troops in 1993.

Breeding herd – ups and downs Białka Arabian State Stud started its proper breeding activity in 1982 based on the breeding material received from the already existing State Arabian State Studs. A total of 29 stud mares arrived to Białka, of which most came from Michałów – 12, from Janów Podlaski – 10 and least from Kurozwęki – 7. These stud mares represented 10

dam families present in the Polish Breeding Program after 1946: Ukrainka, Gazella, Sahara, Bent-El Arab, Milordka, Szamrajówka, Szweykowska, Scherife, Rodania and Mlecha and 5 sire families founded by original Arab stallions: Kuhailan Haifi db. – 16 horses, Ibrahim db. – 5, Ilderim db. – 4, Bairactar db. – 3 and Saklawi I – 1. Throughout the years, the pedigree structure of the breeding herd in Białka has undergone some modifications. Apart from selection, the shape of that breeding herd was influenced by an influx of mares from Kurozwęki Stud privatised in 1998 and by the purchase of several mares from Janów Podlaski in 2018.

Currently, as revealed by the 2021 Białka autumn breeding survey, 57 mares consitute the herd of mares, representing 9 dam families, of which: Szemrajówka – 12 mares, Gazella – 10 mares, Mlecha – 5 mares., Sahara – 6 mares, Wołoszka – 6 mares, Milordka – 9 mares, Scherife – 5 mares, Bent-El-Arab – 3 mares and Rodania – 1 mare.

The great diversity characterizing the herd of stud mares required from the breeders individual selection, resulting in a considerable number of sires used. And yet, despite

STUD such broad use of sires, Białka was initially unable to obtain distinguishing offspring. This was mainly due to the fact that Białka had no access to the best sires of the time that were available in Janów and Michałów. For many years, Białka had to use sires of lesser quality, or sires not fitting the other studs, or else sires not proven hitherto in breeding. However, consistent breeding effort based upon sharp and strictly targeted selection finally brought results. The nineties mark a series of successes achieved by horses from Białka on racetracks, and eventually also on show rings. The year 1991 witnessed the birth in Białka of a stallion that made Białka widely recognizable. That stallion also proved to be an extremely valuable sire, the father of many valuable mares and a continuator in the Polish breeding of the sire family Ilderim db. The stallion in question was Pesal (Partner-Perforacja/ Ernal) born in 1991. Pesal was recognizable from afar thanks to his characteristic beauty. That beauty also ensured him great success. Pesal distinguished himself by his decisive Saklavian type. Additionally, he was a very correctly built stallion, with an exquisite Arabian bouquet and a propensity to put on fat, a feature so characteristic for his family. He early acquired a milky white shade of his grey coat, which made his big, black eyes stand out expressively against that fair background. A short head with a deep jaw, beautifully curved neck and outstanding movement along with a triuphantly waving tail and characteristically flowing mane – these were the distinctive features of Pesal. At the Michałów Junior Spring Show in 1993, the two-year-old Pesal not only won his class, but he also became the Polish Junior Colt Champion as the first ever representative of Białka Stud. The sophisticated beauty of Pesal was combined with a friendly and gentle character. He was ascribed excessive delicacy, or even „femininity”, but Pesal was running on racetrack for two seasons and he won two races. Upon passing his bravery trial, Pesal returned to the show ring in order to become in 1996 the Polish National Senior Stallion Silver Champion at Janów Podlaski National Arabian Horse Show and a Silver Champion at the All Nations Cup in Aachen. In the following year 1997 Pesal became the Polish National Gold Champion of Senior Stallions at Janów Podlaski National Arabian Horse Show, winning also the title Best in Show.

Incorporated into breeding, Pesal was used in Michałów and Agricola Farm, where he left a number of valuable mares: among these in Michałów Złota Orda 1991 (PesalZagrobla/Monogramm), the granddam of Ptolemeusz, the Silver Junior Champion Stallion at the European Arabian Horse Championships. Another mare, Bagatela 2000 (PesalBraminka/Elf ) is the mother of a titled mare Bajaderka.

Pesal is primarily the father of stallion Girlan-Bej 2002 (Pesal-Gracja-Bis/Monogramm) bred by PP Bogajewicz.

Girlan-Bej is the Polish National Junior Gold Champion at the Janów Podlaski National Arabian Horse Show as well as

a World Silver Champion in the same cathegory at the World Championships of the Arabian Horses. In total, Pesal left 124 of his offspring, to whom he passed beauty, good character and grey coat. In that respect he was homozygotic and foals

by Pesal whitened already with mothers. In 2003 Pesal was sold to the Neatherlands, winning the Championships of that country. However, in 2005 Pesal returned in lease to Poland, where he was used at Janów Podlaski Stud. Leaping forward, Pesal was given Palmeta, the best Janów mare boasting exceptional beauty. Out of that combination was born the continuator of the family, the grey Palatino 2006 (Pesal-Palmeta/Ecaho). Since 1996 Pesal was also used in

his maternal stud where he left a lasting trace. Yet, it is only in Janów that he managed to prolong his family. Currently, there are no daughters by Pesal in Białka, but the group of his granddaughters constitute one of the strong pillars of the Arabian horse breeding in Białka. Such mares as Estufa 2009, Cytera 2009, Hermia 2008 or Haftka 2008 are valuable breeding mares with a pure Polish pedigree.

Among sires used in Białka noted for giving exceptional offspring, one has to mention the stallion Gazal Al Shaqab.

He fathered such mares as Perfirka (out of Perforacja by Ernal), Perolia (out of Pereira by Eldon) and Fabryszka

(out of Fula by Partner) and the stallion Ekstern, father of the following mares: Ekina 2004 (out of Eklera by Ecaho), Cirilla 2006 (out of Cirka by Borek), Calatea 2008 (out of Calineczka by Metropolis N.A.), Cella 2008 (out of Celina

by Metropolis N.A.), Frymuszka 2008 (out of Fabryszka

by Gazal Al Shaqab) or the stallion Celsjusz 2004 (out of Carina by Pesal). Another son by Ekstern, the Michałów bred stallion Esparto (Ekstern-Espozycja/Eukaliptus) also left in Białka a number of excellent mares, to mention the distinguishing Egema (out of Egira by Emigrant) as well as Perfinka (out of Perfirka by Gazal Al Shaqab), the brightest star born in Białka so far. She started her show career in

2012 by winning the class of yearling fillies at the Junior Arabian Horse Show in Białka. The same year Perfinka was awarded the Top Ten title during the World Championships of the Arabian Horses in Paris. Subsequent years marking her career are: 2013 with the titles of World Junior Silver Champion Mare, European Junior Silver Champion Mare, Polish National Junior Silver Champion Mare, All Nations Cup Junior Champion Mare in Aachen, 2014 PSAIHF Junior Champion Mare in Saudi Arabia, April 2019 Las Vegas Arabian Breeders World Cup Senior Gold Champion Mare, US National Senior Gold Champion Mare and in 2020 Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show Senior

Gold Champion Mare, giving Perfinka in all the American Triple Crown. In 2020 Perfinka was sold during the Pride of Poland auction for a record sum of EUR 1 200 000,00, which became a beautiful culmination of her show career. Perfinka left in Białka one daughter Platinia 2018 (Equator-Perfinka/Esparto), who is now facing the diffcult task of fulfilling the high breeding expectations elevated by the standards of her famous mother.

Białka specialty Arabian race horses, endurance horses, sport horses and walking horses Over the years Białka has earned the reputation of being an Arabian Stud offering for sale good utility horses. This was favoured by the choice of sires as well as the breeding methods used. Great beauty and the breeding methods employed enabled Arabian horses from Białka to compete successfully with Arabians from Janów stud and Michałów stud. That situation encompassed not only the correct build and great beauty, but primarily very high bravery on racetrack. Until the the first years of the 21st century, the Arabian horses from Białka were subjected to bravery trials on racetrack, and around 80 percent of horses completed that training sucessfully. A pedigree analysis of horses running on racetrack clearly shows that the greatest bravery is noted among representatives of the dam line Scherife or.ar. 1902. Compared with the representatives of other lines, representatives of the dam line Scherife or.ar.1902 show the highest average value of the racing success rate (RSS=3,18) as well as the longest period of racing use (average 2,2 seasons) with a simultaneous highest number of starts in races (average 15 starts) and the highest number of victories (average 4,6 victories per mare). Considering the origin on the sire side, the bravest horses turned out to be the representatives of the

sire family Krzyżyk or.ar. 1876 with a simultaneous racing success rate 2,69, average 14 starts during a 1,75 years long racing career topped with 3 victories. Throughout their 40 years long history, horses from Białka twice won the Derby Award (Dziewierz and Ostragon), twice the Oaks (Al Adha, Aryjka), the Europe Trophy (Esej) and the Białka Trophy (Abisynia). Derby 1993 witnessed horses from Białka taking the first four places: Dziewierz, El Amor, Osjan and Al Adha. Unfortunately, from the beginning of the 21st century horses from Białka Arabian Stud are no longer put

to bravery trials on racetrack, which had a negative impact upon the development of the stud and resulted in falling revenue from the sale of utility horses. Presently, only 3 mares born in 2018 are put to training on racetrack, which amounts to less than 10 percent of horses born in Białka that year.

Due to their exceptional racial qualities, the Arabian horses are very well adapted to participate in long distance endurance riding competitions, where they prove far

superior to the representatives of other horse races.

Arabian horses from Białka have been taking part in such competitions from the very beginning, winning recognition and awards. Among the experts of long distance endurance riding competitions, such horses as Alabar 1984 (HaraczAlbania/Gwarny), Albat 1983 (Probat-Alkaba/Celebes), or Drakkar 1987 (Alkazar-Darowizna/Partner) are considered to be pioneers of that discipline in Poland.

However, these undoubted sport and racing successes remain history. This is mainly due to the fact that during the past decade, Białka has made her way into a dead-end

street by breeding Arabian horses only for show purposes.

Pursuing that search for beauty only, horses from Białka were no longer subjected to bravery trials, which resulted in their loss of the bravery feature. It is difficult to tell whether horses from Białka still possess their utility potential without checking that in practice. Sometimes we can find here and there geldings from Białka winning jumping or eventing competitions or acting in reconstruction groups, but these geldings were lucky to fall in good hands. These horses may serve as a confirmation that not all is lost as regards bravery.

SHOWS AND EVENTS The annual Arabian horse auction in Janów Podlaski is an event that has been permanently marked in the calendar of breeders, owners and lovers of this breed all over the world.

Although Arabian horses can be bought all year round at tenders at state studs and from private owners, the best specimens are offered at the famous Pride of Poland auction. It is not without reason that this event has been called the “pride” of Poland for over twenty years. The horses sold at this auction are true pearls of Polish breeding, which have repeatedly brought glory to their new owners, winning numerous trophies and titles for them. Though there are many such cases in the 52-year history of the auction, we will look at the most recent ones, i.e. the successes of horses purchased at the Pride of Poland in the last ten years.

The star of the 2011 Pride of Poland was PIACENZA (QR Marc – Primawera/Emigrant), sold for 475 thousand euro. Bearing the colours of her new owner she won the silver medal of the 2014 Arabian Masters Championship in Bordeaux, the gold medal of the 2019 Tulip Cup in the Netherlands and the bronze at the 2021 Qatar National Show.

In 2012 two queens graced the auction stage: EJRENE (Gazal Al Shaqab – Emocja/Monogramm), purchased for 440 thousand euro and ETNOLOGIA (Gazal Al Shaqab – Etalanta/ Europejczyk), secured for 370 thousand euro. In 2014 EJRENE reached for two medals – a bronze at the Tulip Cup and a gold at the Arabian Horse Weekend in the Netherlands. Whereas ETNOLOGIA spread her successes over a course of a couple of years: in 2013 she won the silver medal at the All Nations Cup, in 2016 the gold medal at the European Cham-

pionships and in 2018 the gold medal at the Al Khalediah European Arabian Horse Festival and the title of Best in Show.

The 2013 Pride of Poland Sale changed the ownership of the following horses: EL SAGHIRA (Galba – Emira/Laheeb, 500 thousand euro), EKSPULSJA (Gazal Al Shaqab – Elandra/ Monogramm, 400 thousand euro) and PALATINA (QR Marc – Palmeta/Ecaho, 90 thousand euro). Later in EL SAGHIRA reached for the silver at the International Sharjah show (2015), two bronzes at Abu Dhabi and Sharjah (2017), EKSPULSJA grabbed two bronzes at the All Nations Cup and the European Championships (2017), a gold in Ströhen (2017), a gold at the Al Khalediah European Arabian Horse Festival and the title of Best in Show (2019), while PALATINA – the silver of the All Nations Cup (2015) and the gold at the Polish National Championships (2016).

The year 2016 turned out to be a chance to acquire the future bronze medallist from Deauville (2015) - ALABAMA (Gazal Al Shaqab – Altona/Eukaliptus, 165 thousand euro), silver medallist from the Al Khalediah European Arabian Horse Festival – CENOZA (Ekstern – Celna/Alegro, 240 thousand euro) and the phenomenal NORMA (Gazal Al Shaqab – Nina/Monogramm, 250 thousand euro), who in 2015 won the silver in Menton, the silver at the European Championships, the gold in Qatar, the gold at UKIAHS, in 2016 the bronze at PSAIAHF, in 2017 the silver in Dubai, the silver at KAAHC and the gold at PSAIAHF once again.

SHOWS AND EVENTS euro) reached for the bronze medal at the Al Khalediah European Arabian Horse Festival (2017), ALTAMIRA (Ekstern – Altona/Eukaliptus, 250 thousand euro) acquired the silver at the All-Polish Championships in Radom and two golds from the European Cup and the Inter Cup in Prague. In 2017 BERENIKA (Eden C – Belgica/Gazal Al Shaqab, 75 thousand euro) added a double bronze to her list of achievements first during the show in Ströhen and later in the Inter Cup. Her next success was a silver secured at the European Cup in Prague.

PISTORIA (Gazal Al Shaqab – Palmira/Monogramm, 625 thousand euro) is a champion from shows in the UAE and Abu Dhabi (2018), WASA (WH Justice – Waresa/Empres, 252 thousand euro) – Qatari National Champion (2018) and International Qatari Silver Champion (2019). WIEŻA RÓŻ (Ekstern – Wieża Babel/Laheeb, 270 thousand euro) won the bronze at the Arabian Horse Weekend in the Netherlands (2017), while WKRA (Gazal Al Shaqab – Wyborna/Monogramm, 260 thousand euro) acquired the title of KAAHC Senior Gold Champion Mare in Saudi Arabia (2015). We also can’t forget about the record-selling Pride of Poland horse of all time – PEPITA (Ekstern – Pepesza/Eukaliptus), sold for 1.4 million euro. In the following years she was awarded with a silver at the AHO World Cup in Chantilly (2017), a gold at the Elran Cup a gold at the KAAHC, Dubai and Sharjah (2019) and a gold at the PSAIAHF (2020).

During the next sale – the 2020 Pride of Poland – the mare PERFINKA (Esparto – Perfirka/Gazal Al Shaqab) was sold for the staggering amount of 1.25 million euro. This highly decorated mare added another trophy in 2022 to her already large collection – the gold medal of the senior mares at the International UBAYYAH show in Saudi Arabia.

The mare SEFORA (Ekstern – Sawantka/Pepton, 300 thousand euro), purchased in 2016, three years later went on to gain the gold medal of the senior mares at the international show in Qatar.

As you can see from the above, short description, the Pride of Poland auction has always been a trendsetter in the world and a source of great breeding and show potential. Horses that changed owners easily reached for new titles and were successful in the colours of the new owners. Perhaps this year’s auction list also hides future champions - which one will you choose?

The purchased in 2017 PRUNELLA (Abyad AA – Pradera/ Hlayyil Ramadan, 150 thousand euro) won the bronze at the Al Khalediah European Arabian Horse Festival and two golds at the European Cup and Inter Cup in Prague (2019).

With a winning bid of 250 thousand euro at the auction 2021 BRODNICA (Pogrom – Bambina/Kahil Al Shaqab) brought her new owner a gold medal... just three weeks after her purchase, during the show in Bruges. Whereas the greatest star offered at the sale over the last decade, EQUATOR (QR Marc – Ekliptyka/Ekstern), sold in that same year, was honoured four months later with the title of Platinum World Champion Stallion in Paris. All it took was 450 thousand euro.

While we’re on the subject of Platinum Champions it is worth to mention – although she exceeds the period described in this article – the sold in 2008 mare KWESTURA (Monogram – Kwesta/Pesennik) for a then record price of 1.125 million euro. Under the flag of her new owner she won the gold medal of the senior mares in Menton, the gold medal of the European Championships and the gold medal of the World Championships (2009), the gold medal in Dubai (2010), the gold medal of the All Nations Cup (2014) and as the crowning of her career – the title of Platinum World Champion in Paris in 2014.

The 2018 Pride of Poland sale enabled the purchase of the later Polish National Senior Gold Champion Mare PILAROSA (Al Adeed Al Shaqab – Pilar/Fawor, 133 thousand euro) in 2020 and the Bronze Champion from Ajman, PROSARIA (Kabsztad – Prosna/Grafik, 35 thousand euro) in 2019.

Among horses offered for sale in 2019 one could buy the future bronze medallist of the Inter Cup in Prague from 2020 – ANAWERA (Piaff – Altamira/Ekstern, 57 thousand euro), as well as the silver medallist from the Elran Cup (2020) and European Senior Gold Champion Mare (2021) – PRIMERA (Eden C – Preria/Ararat, 90 thousand euro).

In April of this year we bid farewell to EKSTERN (Monogramm – Ernestyna/Piechur), who passed away at the age of 28. The stallion, bred at Michałów Stud, became a legend already during his lifetime. Undefeated in all his nine showings, he won his first title as a yearling during the Polish National Junior Male Championships (1995). Then at the age of two he reached for the International Junior Male Championship in Babolna (1996). Subsequent titles came in the higher age category of the senior stallions. In 1999 he was chosen UK International Senior Champion Stallion, which was just a warm-up before the year 2000, when he not only won the In-

ternational Tulip Cup and Polish National Senior Male Championship, but took the European Triple Crown by winning the All Nations Cup, the European Championships and the World Championships all in one year. In 2003 he bested his rivals during the prestigious Mercedes Diamond Cup in Belgium and in 2008 became the WAHO Trophy honouree, awarded to an exceptional specimen of Arabian horse breeding.

EKSTERN’s show successes are impressive, but it is his breeding value that made him truly priceless. Onto his offspring he passed a characteristic, dished head and small, shapely ears.

EKSTERN is forever etched in the history of Polish Arabian horse breeding. Thanks to his descendants this history will continue. You can find them at this year’s Pride of Poland 2022 offer and write a history of your own.

After a long wait the time had finally come, the European Show Season has been opened. The month of May is known for Arabian Horse enthousiasts to gather, celebrate the passion at ARABIAN HORSE WEEKEND, held in one of the largest Equestrian Estates of South Holland, centred in Schaijk. This years 19th edition of Arabian Horse Weekend, the family Stoop organised an ECAHO European C Show, Straight Egyptian Cup and International C Show. The successful past years resulted in the satisfying number of 120 horse entries! After some unpredictable days in terms of weather, the Arabian Horse Weekend turned out to be an overall sunny weekend with outstanding quality of horses and great atmosphere!

The Arabian Horse Weekend started on Saturday at 8.30 am with the ECAHO European C Show. The judges for the weekend were Mr. Greg Knowles from the United States of America, Mr. Alaa Hammad from Bahrain, Countess Charlotte Lewenhaupt from Sweden, Mr. Sufian Taha from Palestine and Ms. Caroline Reid from the United Kingdom.

Ms. Clémentine Chinouilh from France was a probationer judge. For this article, I limit myself to the top five of horses in case a class consisted out of more than five horses.

Following up second place filly was Mabrouka J (Morion x Miami J), bred and owned by Jadem Arabians from Belgium.

This very beautiful filly had her tail up as per her first steps in the arena and presented herself with lots of attitude and a good trot. Alva Umm (EKS Farajj x Aja Angel), bred and owned

by Moell & Moell AB from Sweden, placed herself as third, followed by Princess Agmalia X (AJ Nawash x JB Psynderella), bred and owned by Elizar Arabians from Belgium. This filly has A great movement, for which she received the award for best movement of the class, sponsored by Paula Böhmer, Böhmer Horses, the Netherlands. The top five was closed by BA Mounia (Kabsztad x Palissade KA), bred and owned by Bembom Arabians from the Netherlands.

The audience early filled up, and people where excited to cheer for the first class ready in the collecting ring. Starting of Group A - Yearling fillies, which was won by type marks, the elegant grey beauty, Elena KA (AJ Elaf x Elan de Marc KA), bred and owned by Knocke Arabians from Belgium.

Second class - Yearling fillies Group B, the win was for the very feminine grey filly Dilay DA (Dominic M x D Nawasy), bred and owned by Danubius Arabians from Romania. This filly with no doubt has a great future ahead of her. The second place was for RDS Layla (Cyclone OS x Lyan Al Dameer EA), bred

and owned by Eiad and Amira Safady of Royal Dutch Arabian Stud, the Netherlands. A very well balanced filly, who knew how to put on a show, also receiving the trophy for best movement in this class. Closing a top three, A very appealing filly from the stables of Flaxman Arabians from Belgium: the bay Flaxman’s Tiara (Haash OSB x MP Julie Aljassimya).

HA Rahdora (HL El Ganador x Rahafa Al Hawajer), bred and owned by Hanaya Arabian Stud from Switzerland, ended fourth and on the fifth place ended Lady Jane X (AJ Elaf x HA Lady Freya), bred and owned by Elizar Arabians, who had good movement but was quite intimidated by the surroundings.

Then following another beautiful class of two years old fillies with Lily Marie NWA (FA El Rasheem x Magdalena NWA), bred by Ole Larsen from Denmark and owned by Nayla Hayek of Hanaya Arabian Stud from Switzerland, on the first place. A very refined filly with a beautiful type, that snored loudly while making her way through the arena. The well deserved second place was for Saba DA (FA El Rasheem x Savannah OS), bred and owned by Danubius Arabians.

Third place was awarded to CBA Mona Lisa (Excalibur EA x Maharani CF), bred and owned by Claus Bouché of Bouché Arabians from Germany, this beautiful former Arabian Horse Weekend champion got the award of best movement of the class. Ero’s Rana (Na’mous Al Shahania x Ero’s Romantique), bred and owned by the Van Duyvenbode family, is a pretty large-framed filly, she ended as fourth. The class was closed by BA Amarena (Magic Mon Cheri x Alte Droga KA), bred and owned by Bembom Arabians, on the fifth place.

Then approaching the last female junior class, three years old fillies also of outstanding quality, the first place went to Luzia N (Calypso OS x Fer Lisaline), bred by Fernandez Echarri Javier from Belgium and owned by Hanaya Arabian Stud.

This former Arabian Horse Weekend silver champion snored loudly and again made a big impression with her exotic looks.

Second placed (ex-aequo with number one), Passionata KA (WH Justice x Primera Marc), bred and owned by Knocke Arabians. A very pretty young mare with excellent movements, that brought her the award for best movement of the class. Following the beautiful Madame Moniscione (Ajman Moniscione x Medea Moniscione), bred by Az. Agr. Buzzi Giancarlo from Italy and owned by Hanaya Arabian Stud, was placed as third with just a slight difference with the first two contenders. Flaxman’s Rania (WH Justice x Papillon KA), bred and owned by Flaxman Arabians, and Diadora SGE (Koronin x Diakrona), bred by Silvia Garde-Ehlert from Germany and owned by Arib Baransi from Germany, closed the class as fourth and fifth.

Then staring with the young males - yearling colts made their appearance and the win was for Sire KA (EKS Farajj x Safiya KA), a harmonious colt with a good floating trot, also awarded the best mover of the class. Second placed CBA Ismael (Wadee Al Shaqab x Ilena El Aryes), bred and owned

by Bouché Arabians, a handsome full brother of renowned

champion filly CBA Indiyana. Olympic EA (Shanghai EA x Cheronea), bred and owned by Equus Arabians from Spain, placed third with his very typical face, followed by Bourhani Azeem (Ajman Moniscione x Bourhani Fadissima), bred and owned by Hannelore Bourdeaux of Bourhani Arabians from Germany, as fourth. The black Athos X (Omega Hymn to the Sea x Ariaa), bred and owned by Elizar Arabians, was the colt that completed the class.

The large class of two years old colts resulted in a win for the very showy chestnut CB Galaxy (Excalibur EA x Gypsy Love NA), bred and owned by Claudia Brugman of Brugman Arabians. Belgium. This expressive young colt also won the award for best movement of the class. On the second place came the pretty KA Wraith (Invictus x Wadida Nur), bred

by Kanka Arabians from the Czech Republic and owned by Pavel Kanka from the Czech Republic, a bay eye-catcher!

Nathan KA (AJ Elaf x Nadira KA), bred and owned by Knocke Arabians placed third while Dac DA (Excalibur EA x Donna Diva), bred and owned by Danubius Arabians, claimed the fourth place. Exxact NWA (Exxalt x Magdalina NWA), bred by Ole Larsen from Denmark and owned by Habib’s Arabians from the Netherlands, an attractive young colt that obviously had his first public outing, closed the top five and therewith also the class.

Only one of the two competitors was present in the class of three years old colts and therefore the trophy went to Sapphire (Emerald J x Violetta VA), bred by Hans Seroels from Belgium and owned by Chantal Volker of CS Arabians from the Netherlands. A well- conditioned grey colt that moved and showed very good.

In the following class of filly foals (also including the championship) it was by far the sensational and very exotic CBA Isaura (CBA Illias x CBA Ilonah El Haleem), bred and owned by Bouché Arabians, that totally amazed the judges and took a well-deserved first place and gold medal with a staggering score. This little one also took the award for best movement of the class. Great achievement also for the breeder Claus Bouché, for breeding both sire and dame of this filly.

ECF Galardia di Yas (AJ Yas x Estonia), bred and owned by Erik Sterken from the Netherlands, completed the class.

The class of colt foals (including championship) Nador BS (Supreme Marc KA x Kithara KA), bred and owned by Mrs. Nathalie de Haes from Belgium, got the first place with gold medal and the best movement award. An expressive young colt with lots of attitude. The very well moving Bandolero X (EKS Farajj x Bobbi Rose-D), bred and owned by Elizar Arabians, took the second place and the elegant CBA Millias (CBA Illias x Maharani CF), bred and owned by Bouché Arabians, was placed third. Jerry FS (Shanghai EA x DA Johara), bred by Elisa Grassi and owned by Francesco Spönle, closed this class with a fourth place.

The prestigious price of most Beautiful Foal was awarded to CBA Isaura.

SHOWS AND EVENTS Before continuing with the senior classes the Fam. Stoop had organised a fantastic lunch break, an outstanding buffet well organised.

The senior classes of the European C Show started with the class of four to six years old mares. The first place went to the amazing BG Faida (RFI Farid x BG Mahira), bred by Ben Goossens & Privilege SFQ from Belgium and owned by Hanaya Arabian Stud. This grey mare had 20’s on type, 20’s on head and neck and 20’s on here amazing movement, which lead to a total score of 93.20 and award for best movement of the class! So far the highest score of the show.

On the second place we found the beautiful mare KA Wahidah (Magic Magnifique x Wolante), bred and owned by Nadine Koo of Koo Arabians, the Netherlands. As foal and as junior already an Arabian Horse Weekend champion and with her wonderful movement she walked to a second place this time as a senior. The very expressive Flaxman’s Pandora (MM Sergio x QR Sarah), bred and owned by Flaxman Arabians, took the third place and on the fourth place ended DA Johara (EKS Alihandro x DA Jewel of Kismet), bred by Diamond Arabians from Austria and owned by Elisa Grassi, a chestnut well presented with a nice stand-up and good body.

In the class of seven to nine years old mares the competition was between the first place Estokada KA (QR Marc x Espadrilla), bred and owned by Knocke Arabians, and Nihal (Shanghai EA x GS Libera), bred by Di Giovanni Gianfranco from Italy and owned by Hanaya Arabian Stud. The first one is a very expressive and feminine mare that moved exceptionally and also took the award for best movement of the class. The second one a snow white, very typical and exotic mare with great Arabic imprint.

In the last senior female class, the class of ten years and older mares, the win went to Mirwanah Kalliste (Marwan Al Shaqab x Nakubaya Kossack), bred and owned by Kalliste Arabians from France. This “big, bay beauty”, that you may know as the mother of champion stallion Wortex Kalliste, also took the award for best movement of the class. The top three was completed by two white pearls owned by Bembom Arabians, being Alte Droga KA (QR Marc x Altona), bred by Knocke Arabians, and Palissade KA (QR Marc x Polonia), also bred by Knocke Arabians.

In the four to six years old stallions, three out of four entries made their appearance and the first place went to Paragon JJ (Nabucco K x JV Pierangeli), bred by Johanna Ullström from Sweden and owned by GH Al Shamal Stud from Sweden, a dark colored stallion with lots of type. Woronin (Vitorio TO x Wilda), bred by Michałow State Stud from Poland and owned by Flaxman Arabians, was placed second. This stallion got well deserved 20’s for movement and with no suprise got the award for best movement of the class and Best Movement Trophy of the European C Show. The bay Vigaz PKA (Gazal Al Shaqab x Villina NVF), bred and owned by Petra Mulder

of PeKa Arabians from the Netherlands, closed the class on the third place.

In the last ordinary halter class of the European C Show, the class of stallions of seven years and older, it was KAS Gigi l’Amoroso (Ajman Moniscione x Sheika MAF), bred

by Wenche Roefs from Belgium and owned by Thierry Oldenburg from the Netherlands, that took the win. A grey stallion with a beautiful head that presented himself great.

On the second place with also the award for best movement came moving machine Etoryk (Om El Shahmaan x Etnologia), bred by SK Janow Podlaski from Poland and owned by Flaxman Arabians.

Then it was time for the championships and the first champion was that of the yearling fillies. The gold medal went to Belgium, the beautiful yearling filly Mabrouka J, although with a close call for Dilay DA, the winner of the yearling fillies Group B, who took a nice silver medal home to Romania. Then placed bronze Elena KA. In the championship for yearling colts the Gold medal went to CBA Ismael, and silver placed Sire KA. Olympic EA remained third with a bronze medal for his Spanish breeder and owner.

In the championship for junior fillies, it was the exotic Luzia N that continued her Arabian Horse Weekend champion legacy by taking the gold medal this time. The silver medal went to Lily Maria NWA. Passionata KA gained the bronze medal. The show bomb CB Galaxy made his breeder and owner Claudia Brugman happy with a golden medal in the championship for junior colts, while KA Wraith earned a silver medal for Czech Republic. It was Sapphire that kept the bronze in the Netherlands, for his owners of CS Arabians.

Then continuing with the Senior Championships, first the Senior Mares.

With the wonderful collection of mares placed for the championship the choices weren’t easy to make. The results lined up as following. BG Faida took the gold medal, followed by a silver medal for Estokada KA and Nihal took the bronze medal.

The championship for senior stallions had Paragon JJ winning the gold medal, with KAS Gigi l’Amoroso winning the silver medal for his Dutch owner Thierry Oldenburg.

The absolute champion mover Woronin won the bronze medal and therewith all championships passed.

The awards that were still to be granted were the Best Dutch Bred Trophy, the Best Head Trophy and the Best Breeder/ Owner Trophy. The Best Dutch Bred Trophy went to KA Wahidah and her owner Nadine Koo, thereby repeating her achievements as a foal. The Best Head Trophy was won by Nihal and the Best Breeder/Owner Trophy went to Knocke Arabians.

Finally, out of all gold medal winners, the judges had to crown one horse as Best of Show. After a lot of reobserving and thinking, the judges crowned the stunning filly foal CBA Isaura as Best of Show, with lots of cheers and happiness from her breeder/owner Claus Bouché and his team.

Straight Egyptian Cup After the European C Show, it was time for the Straight Egyptian Cup. Each class was also the championship.

The class and championship of junior fillies had a stunning young filly sired by the World Egyptian Gold medal Naseem el Rashediah, Joury Al-Zain (Naseem Al Rashediah x Al Anood Al-Zain), bred and owned by Al-Zain Stud from Bahrain, took the win and gold medal.

SE Junior colts, the three years old and already quite matured Shadi Al Zobair (Al Adeed Al Shaqab x Maliha Bouznika), bred by Al Zobair Stud from the United Arab Emirates and owned by Flaxman Arabians, won the gold medal. The only one year old Hamdi Al Safi (SA Shaman x Hawanem Al Safi), bred and owned by Geert Oben of Al Safi Stud from Belgium, won the silver medal with the three years old Abadi (Naseem Al Rashediah x Diva Shalima), bred by Mr. Jean Conings of SE Royal Arabians from Belgium and owned by the combination of Saloti Stables & Bratz Arabians from the Netherlands, taking the bronze medal home.

Gold champion Egyptian queen senior mare was Mesteka Al Bawady (Mo’ezz Al Baidaa x Mona Al Bawady), bred and owned by Al Bawady Stud from Egypt. A very exotic and feminine mare that really characterizes the breed.

In the class and championship of senior stallions one out of the two entries was present and thus it was the masculine Najdi Al Shakhoura (Naif Al Rayyan x Falha Al Rayyan), bred and owned by Shakhoura Farm from Bahrain, that won the gold medal, with his big eyes and refined, dry face. It was also Najdi Al Shakhoura who won got granted the title Best of Show of the Straight Egyptian Cup. This brought the first day of the Arabian Horse Weekend almost to an end. After a long day of joy, pleasure and hard work comes time for a good meal. Fam. Stoop had organised also this year a 5 star BBQ for which all handlers and their team where invited and of course spectators that wished to join. The family was overwhelmed by the compliments received of their great hospitality during this weekend. Finally a good night of sleep, to prepare for the next day the Arabian Horse Weekend would continue.

Sunday May 22 - International C Show On Sunday the show started again at 8.30 am with the first class for junior geldings. A very bright young man, Nael

Budhan made his enter in this class being the youngest handler of the show, only 11 years old and already so talented, with no doubt he deserved a medal for his outstanding presentation.

Albidayer Stud was generous to donate a total 5000,- Euro as sponsorship to the Gelding classes which was highly appreciated by the participants.

The bay ENDER KA (ES Sarab x El Extasa), bred by Knocke Arabians and owned by Habib’s Arabians, took the win as the most typical of them all with a great and showy attitude.

He was followed by the grey Zizou KA (ES Sarab x Zafia d’Elzenwalle), bred by Knocke Arabians and owned by Liv Bakker from the Netherlands. Zizou blinked out in his great movements, just like his handler who almost overtook the horse. The classical IEA Gracio (El Nabila B x Bess-Ginger), bred by Ineke van Wengerden of Idol’s Eye Arabians from the Netherlands and owned by Miriam van Heiningen from the Netherlands, closed the class.

A great number of horses entered the ring in the class for senior geldings, which really was a great class. The first place went to an impressive grey gelding named APOLLO KA (Equiborn KA x Aria Athena), bred by Knocke Arabians and owned by Mrs. Nathalie de Haes, who showed excellent movement for which he received a 20 three times. The Dutch- bred Cadanz Ghazal (Shiraz de Lafon x Cadanz Djamilah), bred and owned

by Cadanz Arabians, took the second place. This slender build horse has an exotic face and a good Arabian imprint. On the third place, also with a 20 for movement, was the pretty VDB Fa’iz (Fadi Al Shaqab x Bint Alianna), bred and owned by VDB Arabians from Belgium, followed by former breeding stallion Jeryan Aljassimya (WH Justice x Psierra), bred by Aljassimya Farm from Qatar and owned by Flaxman Arabians. The very tall Libero KA (Psytadel x QR Lizette), bred by Knocke Arabians and also owned by Mrs. Nathalie de Haes, closed the top five.

In the following championship for geldings, it was without a doubt that the moving machine Apollo KA would take the gold, followed by Cadanz Ghazal who showed himself to a well-deserved silver medal for his owner of Cadanz Arabians.

Ender KA also kept the bronze medal of honour in the Netherlands, for his owners at Habib’s Arabians.

Then the yearling fillies turned up and here it was the charismatic RDS MOZN (Kanz Albidayer x Malika KS), bred and owned by Eiad and Amira Safady of Royal Dutch Arabian Stud, that took the win. Maraya Samjad (AJ Elaf x Atouch of Magic ORA), bred and owned by Samjad Stud from Lebanon, is a grey filly with lots of type, became second. On a ex-aequo third place we found Samara KA (FA El Rasheem x Safiya KA), bred and owned by Knocke Arabians, a filly with a very refind face. SAC Sofiya (EKS Farajj x AH Princess Soraya), bred by Rees Gibbs Dean of Skyroo Arabian Centre from South Africa and owned by Nasser Kalid Al Mesnad of Al Khor Stud from Qatar, became fourth. Nevertheless this pretty filly received the award for best movement of the class, sponsored by Paula Böhmer of Böhmer Horses from the Netherlands. The top

SHOWS AND EVENTS five, and therewith also the class, was completed with Orlya AT (Jyar Meia Lua x Orla Turnia), bred and owned by Al Thumama Stud from Qatar, The next class prepared the final touches in the collecting ring, another fantastic class of young females. The overall quality at Arabian Horse Weekend is known to be above average. Every year horses make their debut at the show in Schaijk continuing their journey to shows of higher level, even to the World championships! A pride to the family Stoop when seeing how the horses made the start of their career at their show in Schaijk.

In class B Yearling fillies the judges ranked the mesmerizing REEF AQ (Ghaith Al Zobair x Shikha Al Jbreen), bred by Abdulaziz Abdulrahman Allowaihiq from Saudi Arabia and owned by Hanaya Arabian Stud, scoring a great score ending on the first place with also the award for best movement of the class. The charming Jolanta KA (EKS Farajj x Jasmine KA), bred and owned by Knocke Arabians was placed second.

Fai AT (Shanghai EA x Fadwa AA), bred and owned by Al Thumama Stud, closed the class as third.

Continuing on to another outstanding quality class of the two year old fillies, making her first entry out of this group was the beauty, CARRARA BEY (Ibn Farid x Ajaley), bred by Renee and Kevin Holt from the United States of America and owned

by Hanaya Arabian Stud. As second lined up Mona Samjad (Shanghai EA x ZT Rida), bred by Fadi Salim Majzoub from the United Arab Emirates and owned by Samjad Stud.

On the third place we found AJ Asmaar (Shanghai EA x AJ Amandari), bred and owned by Ajman Stud from the United Arab Emirates. Fourth went to Fadwa Del Palazzotto, bred

by Paolo Capecci from Italy and owned by Petra Mulder of Peka Arabians, a promising young filly. Fifth place was taken

by Axxilia PKA (Exxalt x Ajmana BR), bred by Petra Mulder of PeKa Arabians and owned by Mikki Peretz of MP Arabians from Israel, with a strong trot, for which she was granted the award for best movement of the class.

Heading to the three year old fillies, the quality went to the next level. Fillies entered the ring who have internationally already made their debut. To welcome such quality at Arabian Horse Weekend confirms what a high respected and prestigious show it is. The first place went to a filly who was one of the highlights of the show, competing for Poland bred and owned by Tomasz Tarzynski. A daughter of the World Champion E.S. Harir and out of VA Magnifica. MAMMA MIA was also awarded for best movement of her class.

On the second place SQ Al JAOUHRA, a filly who doesn’t pass by unseen, scoring 20’s in type and head and neck there is no explanation needed that she is breath taking. Also this filly is daughter to a World Champion, Excalibur EA and out of Azalea LBA. She is proudly bred and owned by Al Saqran Stud from Kuwait. The elegant filly Maraheb Al Akmal (D Hajes x Ashira of Rohan), bred by Ali Matar Wawan Alshammari of Al Wawan Stud from Kuwait and owned by Samjad Stud, lines up as third, followed by Nijmet Al Wadee AMG (Wadee Al Shaqab

x Joharat Solaz), bred by Ahmad Abu Hasuna from Israel and owned by Hanaya Arabian Stud. The expressive moving Kalifa PKA (RFI Farid x Kadira), bred by Petra Mulder of PeKa Arabians and owned by Fawaz Ridn from Saudi Arabia, ended on the ex-aequo fifth place.

Time for the International yearling male classes. Shortly after arriving into the collecting ring the colts made their entrance.

The judges were blown away by one of the contenders who had eyes that long weren’t seen in the Arabian horse world. A very charismatic young man made his first entry in the show ring and did left and unforgettable presence behind with A first place, also awarded for best movement of the class, RDS VOLCANO (Dominic M x Murana’s Azeezah), bred by Eiad and Amira Safady of Royal Dutch Arabian Stud and leased

by Al Wajba Stud from Qatar. Second winner up was the handsome CB Rembrandt (Wadee Al Shaqab x Gypsy Love NA), who was 2021 Champion colt at the Arabian Horse Weekend. Bred and owned by Claudia Brugman of Brugman Arabians.

Following the two years old colts, The quality remained and the well-deserved winner of this class, with 93 points and the award for best movement of the class, was ALK RETAJJ(AJ Radman x Domenica LR), bred and owned by Al Kaisar Stud from Uruguay. He has also already proven himself as a show horse internationally. The second placed Tarantino C (El Tino x Scarlett C), bred by Rhonda L. Coleal from the United States of America and owned by Abhar Arabians from Kuwait, is a fiery and expressive stallion with a very nice dark bay coat.

The last Junior male class entered - Three year old colts. Here proven the apple does not fall far from the tree. Taking the lead was MADIN AL BAYDAA son of World Champion & Silver world Champion (Excalibur EA x Madinat Al Badyaa), Madin al Baydaa is bred by Al Baydaa Stud from Egypt en owned by Al Heib M.A. Stud from Israel. On the second place we saw another Al Baydaa Stud breeding product lining up, i.e. Vakil Al Baydaa son of RFI Farid, and out of the well know ethereal lady, Valentino’s Angel, Vakil Al Baydaa is a overall very complete stallion with a super movement, owned

by Flaxman Arabians. Dynamite KA (WH Justice x Dantella KA), bred and owned by Knocke Arabians, really lived up to its name with his explosive presentation, bringing him the award for best movement of the class. The class was completed by the bay SAC Almahdi (Ibn Farid x Cenje Luhandra), bred by Skyroo Arabian Centre and owned by Mistico Equestrian from South Africa.

In the 4 to 6 year old mares class, DANIYA AT made her entrance like a real lady, and she knows she’s got the looks!

Dancing her way around the arena was a joy to watch. Daniya AT (Morion x Donya Jamal), bred and owned by Al Thumama Stud, deserves all the honours of her win.

On to the seven to nine years old mares it’s hard to find the words as again the quality was outrageous with an absolute

win for Elizia Alfabia (ZT Magnofantasy x Alfabia Gaia), bred by Alfabia Arabians from Italy and owned by Samjad Stud. A stunning mare with multiple 20’s across the board, also winning the award for best movement of the class. On the second place lined up the very feminine Marrakech J (Emerald J x JA Ultima), bred and owned by Christine Jamar of Jadem Arabians. RFI Sensation (Jazeer de Wiec x RFI Sophie Al Maktub), bred by Rodrigoz Forte from Brazil and owned by Hanaya Arabian Stud, a pretty bay who closed the class as third.

Then when the last class of the females entered only little did we know yet. With a glimpse of the eye everyone could recognise the creme de la creme. Arabian Horse Weekend had a huge honour of welcoming one of worlds most admired Straight Egyptian mare ‘WADAD ZAMANI’, Not only a class winner at the Straight Egyptian World Champion ship, but also Bronze World Champion in Paris. Her return was celebrated with the cheering of the crowd taking UNANIMOUS 20’S in TYPE! Wadad Zamani (Laheeb x Zena Al Buraq), bred by Al Kasasi Osman from Israel and owned by Hanaya Arabian Stud. A real ambassador for the breed. Second winner up, was the expressive AJ Dinara (AJ Dinar x HS Dancing Queen), bred by Ajman Stud and owned by Elizar Arabians. A mare who is proven to be a winner in the show ring and Paternal sister to the world champion E.S. Harir.

With two halter classes for the Senior male classes to go, the stallions of four to six years old kicked off. RD HARENAADO (Hariry Al Shaqab x DM Endless Romance) who was Bronze World Champion, made his return in the ring at Arabian Horse Weekend. Bred by Murray and Shirley Popplewell of Rae-Dawn Arabians from the United States of America and owned by Al Zoabi Stud from Israel, A very expressive stallion with an impressive front great attitude and wonderful stand-up. The second placed Magesty KA (Eden C x Magnums Rose), bred by Knocke Arabians and owned by Mrs. Nathalie de Haes, presented himself as a real macho with great movements, leading to the award for best movement of the class. CBA Illias (Lawrence El Gazal x Ilena El Aryes), bred and owned by Clause Bouché of Bouché Arabians, closed the class as third. This beautiful stallion already saw his offspring succeed in the championships earlier this weekend.

In the last halter class of stallions of seven years and older, MATTEO AH (Emerald J x JPJ Talai), bred by AH Arabians from Israel and owned by Habib’s Arabians, took the win.

This top class bay stallion, that already saw some victories in the international show ring, also got the award for best movement of the class. AR Fayyim (Valerio Ibn Eternity VI x Aicha SVA), bred by Isabel Lopez y van Bremen of Arabian Ranch from the Netherlands and owned by Miriam van Heiningen, lined up second.

After the halter classes it was time for the championships.

In the championship for yearling fillies, REEF AQ took the Gold medal to Switzerland for Hanaya Arabian Stud. Jolanta

KA gained the silver medal and RDS Mozn proudly took the Bronze medal.

The yearling colts had the same result as in the halter class, with a first place and thus Unanimous Gold medal for RDS Volcano, where words couldn’t express how proud the Dutch breeders, Amira & Eiad Safady were. A long side the Silver medal for CB Rembrandt, a great achievement for his owner and Breeder Claudia Brugman.

At the Junior female championship Mamma Mia took the Gold medal in the Championship, continuing her path of glory for her breeder and owner Tomasz Tarcyzński from Poland. The Silver medal went to the United Arab Emirates with SQ Al Jaouhra and Carrara Bey won the Bronze medal for Switzerland.

Following on to the Junior Colts Championships, the grey Madin Al Baydaa won the Gold medal in the championship and ALK Retajj, won the silver medal. Tarantino C was awarded with the Bronze medal.

In the Senior Championships without a doubt, went to the unbelievable beauty Wadad Zamani who unanimously took the Gold medal home. A well-deserved silver medal was there for Marrakech J to take home to Belgium and the great Elizia Alfabia earned the bronze medal.

The senior stallions had in their championship a line up of the impressive young stallion RD Harenaado with the Gold medal, Magesty KA with the silver medal and Matteo AH kept the bronze medal in the Netherlands.

Finally there were some special awards to be rewarded, with the Best Movement Award going to Apollo KA for the best movement of the show, the Best Head Trophy going to Mamma Mia for the most beautiful head of the show, RDS Mozn being the Best Dutch Bred horse of the International C Show and Wadad Zamani winning the trophy for Highest Score of the show and the best breeder award went to Knocke Arabians.

The very last trophy to be awarded was that for Best of Show, to be crowned out of all the Gold champions of the day.

This ultimate honour went, as most already predicted, to the Egyptian Queen,, Wadad Zamani.

With these last award ceremonies, the Arabian Horse Weekend 2022 came to an end. Slowly all contenders, trainers, handlers, grooms and spectators left the Dutch Equestrian Estate in Schaijk to go home, looking back on again a very successful weekend of the Arabian horse show. Enjoying a bite and a drink, the show organization and officials also made one last toast on the success. A big thank you again to Annelieke, Pieter and Ine Stoop and their whole team and volunteers, for organizing such a wonderful show weekend again. With a huge gratitude to all sponsors, supporters and participants, the family highlights this all would not be possible without you. We already are thinking ahead of the 2023 Edition! q

The real extraordinary part of this project dedicated to women, apart from the life stories they tell, which in themselves are unrepeatable and unique, is the spirit with which the women participate in the interviews and devote their time to revealing their stories and recounting their experiences. All women should be able to have their own space to tell their stories, a space to tell what they have learnt. They always talk about learning, almost never about having taught even though they very often teach life, give direction, contain the flow of existence of their family or those closest to them. The real extraordinary part of this project is the possibility to give a space and time to listen to these stories. All women should be able to have a space and time dedicated to them. All women should feel the pride of being able to tell their stories, to be able to stop and collect their thoughts and retrace their story to pass it on to other women, to mark a path, to leave an indelible mark.

My name is Lina Ismer and I am happy that Giorgia asked me to be part of her project “We Women”.

I live with my family in a little village in Lower Saxony, Germany, where my parents running a farm. At the moment I’m still going to school, but my dream is to study veterinary medicine as my dad later.

Beside of that, I also would like to devote myself to photography, which I have already started.

My family is breeding Arabian Horses since more than 60 years, that’s why I think its not a big surprise that I have the same interest as my ancestors for the Arabian Horses. My family started to take me on shows, when I was still a little girl. I can remember standing in the collecting ring and watching my dad showing our homebred horses by himself. Most of my childhood I spent in the stables brushing the mares or playing with the foals out on the fields.

After the years I got more and more interested to this special World. I tried to get more and more involved in our company and now I’ve already got my tasks in areas like social media or taking care about our website. As well I’m always available if somebody is looking for help. However, the most interesting part for me is, when we’re taking our horses into the paddock and talking about, how much they’ve been grown up and of course changed since they were babys. It gives me always a proud feeling.

Until today, I’ve never experienced any difficulties or obstacles as a woman in this scene. I think, because of the fact that we’re all sharing the same passion, everybody treats each other with respect.

I also think, that today in most cultures it’s not a big deal anymore, if you’re a woman, a child or a man, it’s much more important what character traits you have and how to deal with other people.

Hi, I am Giovanna but I prefer to be called Giovy.

I live between Italy and Qatar, 43 years old, mother of two wonderful children, wife since 2015 of the trainer Alessio Scaramella, who is handler in Al Rayyan Farm (Qatar) and made me discover this fascinating world of horses ...it was a grey Friday afternoon, it was raining, I was locked in the car, sad, the emptiness was hounding my every thought (difficult moment in my life) suddenly I heard a knock on the window, it was Alessio, handsome as the sun.

one step at a time, every day is a good opportunity to learn.

I admit, I often encounter difficulties; the world of the Arabian horse is far removed from the other types and disciplines of equestrianism, but living the stable every day, following (when possible) Alessio in the various national, international and world competitions encourages me to learn more and more. Then there are them, my ‘equestrian’ friends (no need for names, everyone knows) who are a great support, they make the difference!

He didn’t ask me anything. Serious, with his olive green eyes: “Sunday come with me on horseback” ...I spent a morning on a wooden chair, silent and melancholic...until the first caress of an Arabian horse.

It sounds like an obvious sentence, written and repeated, but in life you need courage, the courage to get involved, to take risks, to take that ‘plunge’ into the void even when everything seems impossible, scares you, everyone is against you, but the will to see, to know, to know takes over. Never get ‘stuck’ in habits, always make your dreams fly high.

I suddenly felt light, detoxified.

I was almost dazzled by their elegance and at the same time naturalness. The horse is par excellence an example of powerful musculature, a symbol of strength, an icon of beauty and radiance. It is no coincidence that it is the ideal animal for physical and psychological therapy.

I think one must live with remorse, never regret: “all I regret in my life is what I did not do”!

I am a dreamer, I look outside my mind without limits, I always like to think that there is something extraordinary waiting for me ....for me and my family.

I am Rita Montalbano, I have spent a part of my life doing something else, I mean that I did not take care of horses even if I rode regularly, as a hobby, in my free time. I come from a beautiful town, Lecco is nestled between the lake and the mountains, I was a sporty and professionally satisfied young woman, and up to about 30 I spent my life there.

During a visit to Fieracavalli, back in 1993 if I remember correctly, I met Franck Boetto who was at that time entering the world of the Arabian horse in Italy, coming from France. He showed the Arabian stallion Coaltown, who had recently arrived from the United States. I don’t know if it was due to the kick in the head taken by a colt that had run away, or if it was fate, in short, we started dating and in a short time I left my job and the charming town on the lake, to follow him in an incredible adventure that, apart from the sentimental part, also taught me everything that, today, is my experience of the Arabian show horses .

In those years, around the Arabian horse, there was a great excitement, the shows were very popular and, in a very short time, the Center we had rented (in which we were personally doing all the renovations, improvements and building facilities for horse training) was full of horses, Franck sometimes visited new customers who requested his services, I was left alone, managing the staff, often helping in the stable, taking care of the work of the boxes, I remember that the hours of daylight were not enough, I remember that I was really overwhelmed by work because I also took care of all the administrative part, I remember that everything went fast, a succession of successes and victories in the show, the difficulties of the harsh winters, the frozen pipes that burst ... the sleepless nights to assist the mares during birth.

Many responsibilities, success and requests for collaboration that had come faster than expected ... in a short time my life had completely transformed. I remember well the expression of my friends, when they came to see me, and they found me sweating on the tractor, or with a gallows in hand, they who were used to seeing me in a suit, and with stiletto heels! I felt satisfied and happy, very often overwhelmed with fatigue but, I clearly

felt that the horses were something I had under my skin, the physical efforts and worries did not weigh on me, I was doing what I wanted to do, what made me happy.

Franck and I, apart from being in love, we were a team, young and strong, positive and enthusiastic, it really seemed that nothing and no one could scratch what we were building with sacrifices and a lot of dedication.

We spent together, in this incredible (from all points of view) and not always easy adventure, something like 14 years, years that taught me a lot, in which I met fantastic people, true friends that I still find today in the shows, breeders , vets, handlers, photographers ... how much road on trucks, so many joys, disappointments, pain and a lot of life.

Like all things, this adventure also came to an end, and now Franck is one of my best friends.

After a few years spent “away” from horses, in 2013 I followed Stefano, my current partner, who had received a job offer in Qatar, as a private trainer (he trains thoroughbred for racing), and after only 2 months I started working as a show & breeding manager for his same sponsor, in a beautiful Farm in full development and construction, about fifty kilometers from the city of Doha.

This opportunity has opened up a world to me, the possibility of continuing with my passion, in a country so different in culture, habits, cuisine, climate and religion, but so fascinating, interesting and, in its own way, welcoming. I have already spent 9 years in Qatar, the beginning has been not easy at all, the staff did not accept me immediately but, over time, we became really a great family, I had the opportunity to breed mares with bloodlines remarkable, exclusively Straigh Egyptian,I covered them with stallions of great value, I met and collaborated with fantastic people, I created important bonds of friendship and collaboration.

The local breeders really surprised me, they were real friends, people who don’t express much but who are always there for me, who have shown me how much they appreciate me, on several occasions, and on whom I can count. I am proud

of what I have created in these long years in Qatar, I worked for a very special person, a fair and always correct boss, someone a little shy, but a very good person, with a big heart, he and his family have been mine for all these years, an experience that I will bring forever in the heart as something very special.

Several victories in show, in the early years, but what interests me most, which is a source of pride for me, is my breeding and the products I have “created” in recent years, passion and dedication pay off, really, and I’m not talking about money, I’m talking

What took place in Marina di Pietrasanta on 14th and 15th May was the 21st edition of this event.

Once again the wonderful Versiliana park hosted the Arabian Horse International B Show E.C.A.H.O. This show, historically and masterfully organised by Mr. Luciano Borzonasca, is sponsored by the Region of Tuscany. The show is not only a morphological competition for Arabian thoroughbreds, but an event that encapsulates all the spirit of tourist hospitality typical of Versilia and its administration. Starting with the Mayor himself, Mr. Alberto Stefano Giovannetti, who followed the entire event on a daily basis. We saw him award the categories together with the councillor Francesca Bresciani and the president of the Versiliana Foundation, Cav. Alfredo Benedetti, as well as congratulate the organisers and participants in concerts, shows, literature and political conferences.

We saw all the authorities thank the artist Marco Cornini, who created the poster for this 2022 edition, as well as the beautiful bronze statue exhibited over the two days in the centre of the ring. This closeness of the incumbent public administration to the public and all those present was the right attitude of human and friendly hospitality. It is also an immense pleasure for all of us insiders to immerse ourselves and stroll along the avenues of the park and breathe in the scent of the centuries-old maritime pines, to taste the regional specialities on the stalls of local artisans, and

Here, a phrase to encourage all those breeders or owners who missed an important appointment for the world of the mounted and morphological Arabian horse this year.

Speaking of the mounted Arabian horse, I would also like to mention the impressive show held by Mr. Christian Da Pos “The Stallion Power” and congratulate the young paticipants in the Western Plesure test judged

by French judge Mrs. Berengère Fayt.

The morphology classes were judged by Mrs. Berengère Fayt herself, Mrs. Claudia Darius (Germany), Dr. Gianmarco Aragno (Italy), Mr. Cedes Bakker (Netherlands) and Mrs. Anna Stefaniuk (Poland). In the field Mr. Cristian Moschini in the role of Ring Master. Dr. Vet. Giampaolo Teobaldelli, Mr. Amadio Sparapan and Mrs. Barbara Raso were the Disciplinary Committee.

Fantastic and engaging music by Mr. Gianluca Filippi.

The voice that punctuated every second of the competition was Mrs. Miriam Boschini.

For many people Arabian horses are associated just with the beauty. Kind of art to be admired and watched over, the pleasure of experiencing something sophisticated and unique that people can feed their senses with.

Sadly many times it is forgotten how Arabian horses can be powerful and what a wide spectrum of their use there is. Arabian Horses proved themselves to be wonderful saddled horses, their intelligence make them extremely trainable, they are very strong physically as also mentally with huge spirit of fighting.

Arabian Horses are characterised with highest level of stamina from all the breeds, and small demands in feeding make them surviving at most extreme conditions. Surely it is not realised by many, that the efficiency of using a feed among Arabian horses is three times better then at warmbloods. That means for the same amount of work Arabians need three times less food. This feature undoubtedly comes from their originary habitat where they had to survive in hot deserts of the Arabian Peninsula.

The use of Arabian horses under saddle covers many disciplines, probably this is the only breed that can

be used in so many different ways. Starting with the widest and most popular endurance races, as well as speed races on the racetracks, going through many pleasure classes, western reining and trails, cross country, ending on strict classic disciplines like dressage or show jumping. Surely Arabian Horses are the most successful in endurance, there is no other breed that can keep running for several hours more than 160 km. Arabians have amazing capability of recuperation that probably makes them so irreplaceable in this discipline. Overall we might talk about many disciplines but we must always remember that Arabian horses are wonderful riding horses just for pleasure, they are our companions so we will never be bored while going to hack out with them.

Perhaps Arabian horses have as many lovers as haters, we cannot make everybody loving Arabians but undoubtedly the one who had worked and trained Arabian horses will remain in love with them forever.

Due to their amazing trainability and intelligence and the most honest heart ever, these horses are capable to do any performance and break any stereotypes.

THE 2022 ARABIAN BREEDERS

The large, lush green polo fields of Scottsdale’s Westworld was a splendid setting for the magnificent horses presented at this year’s Arabian Horse Breeders’ World Cup. Once again horses from around the world competed for the honor of this show’s titles as well as the spectacular awards, which are second to none with their beauty and artistry. The 2022 Breeders’ World Cup and participants wish to thank His Royal Highness, Mohammed VI, King of Morocco and his Royal Stables, Haras de Bouznika for his gracious and generous patronage of this world class event.

As with every show held outdoors, weather is always a major concern. Thankfully, mother nature blessed us and we all enjoyed the incredible energy of the brilliant Arizona sunshine, which always lifts the spirits and creates a magical atmosphere. You could see and feel the joy of the horses as they entered the lush green show ring where they trotted and pranced before the cheering crowds and the panel of esteemed international judges. The quality of the horses at this year’s show did not disappoint - they were thrilling!

Throughout the four days of the show, there was an undeniable festive party mood. The Breeders’ World Cup is so much more than just a competition, it is one of the most highly anticipated events of the year created by Arabian horse breeders for breeders and everyone is welcome. Each day everyone gathered to celebrate the beauty of the Arabian horse with old friends and new and to have a wonderful time. Following each day’s competition, there was a sumptuous party hosted by a local farm, which allowed conversation about our favorite subject and to see even more fantastic horses and breeding programs.

The Breeders’ World Cup remains a favorite American event, not only for the horses themselves, but also for the fun atmosphere of the show created by the camaraderie of the breeders and the support they give each other. It’s like a family reunion - a gathering for the family of Arabian horses lovers where everyone is welcome. Each year, as stallions do they duty, mares are bred, and new foals are born, our lives become intertwined and our family expands. There are no borders, no limits to this family or to the beauty of the Arabian horse.
