Why Aussie Farmers Should Consider
In tough drought conditions, making new investments can seem risky, but building a farm shed now can be a smart decision for Australian farmers. While the immediate challenges of dry weather are real, a shed offers long-term benefits that outweigh the initial cost.
WHY IT MATTERS:
Beyond the obvious practical benefits, a project can positively impact a farmer’s mental health and well-being.
Building a shed gives you and your workers a productive focus. Everyone knows the “idle hands” saying, so keeping you and your workers busy during slow times with a new shed project brings a sense of accomplishment and purpose, which can be incredibly uplifting. Instead of feeling stuck or overwhelmed, you’re moving forward with something that will benefit you for years. Further, if you’re hands-on, constructing your new shed or extension yourself, or with your team, can also lower costs, making it more affordable during difficult financial times. Investing in a new shed now is not just a solution for the present, it’s also a practical way to prepare for future needs. Whether for storage, a workshop, or other use, the benefits will continue well beyond this current cycle.
Remember, any new farm shed is not just a solution for today’s challenges—it’s a long-term investment in your farm’s future.

The low roof height means you can easily tackle building these yourself. Save money by buying your fertiliser when you see good deals, have fertiliser on-farm when you need it and avoid being caught short if there are supply delays at seeding. New Farm Sheds Protect Your Valuable Farming Assets For Generations
Hay and Machinery sheds are useful at any time, and as many Respected Farmers will attest, should be considered in dry times too.
Hay storage sheds help to drought-proof your livestock farm for the future. It can also increase the ongoing value of your hay for sale to others.
Plus, once completed, your new farm shed provides essential storage space for valuable items:
• Machinery & equipment
• Hay & grain
• Fertiliser & Chemicals
Not to mention, it’s a great new space for future repairs, maintenance and manufactured projects.
Whether it’s a whole new structure or adding extra bays or a leanto to an existing shed, any new shed is an important long term investment.
“Shed Wisdom” from Danny:
“If you’ve got a Grant shed, we know they can handle a leanto or extension, whereas others are often built to within a ‘poofteenth’ of an inch of their lives.”
Great technical term Danny but what does that mean?
“Yeah, ok, it’s an odd terminology I know. Probably not found in a dictionary. Just means a bloody small gap. Oftentimes, other brands engineer their sheds so ‘close to the bone’ that you can’t easily extend them. But if you’ve wisely chosen a Grant Shed, we can easily extend in length or add a leanto any time after the original build.*”

Add Sliding Doors for Security & Protection from Harsh Weather
With farm theft becoming an increasing issue, many farmers now prefer to enclose and lock up sheds to protect their valuable machinery, vehicles and equipment.
The Good News is, sliding doors can be added to most existing Grant Sheds. They are a cost effective way to reduce your risk of loss and bring you peace of mind.
Not only that, they make your in-shed work environment easier and more pleasant during bad weather.
And what about these Add Bays, a Leanto

Daniel Weckert, Brinkworth planned his new shed (above left with gable ends filled in) with the intention of adding doors later (right). This is a drive-through shed with doors each end. If your shed is like this you could choose to add doors to one end only for now, to increase weather protection, and completely enclose later.

David Crawford, Strathalbyn added a multipurpose leanto to his machinery shed. Uses include a bay close to his workshop section for spare parts (far right) plus bays for small farm and family vehicles. Shed: 12m x 22.5m x 6.3m. Leanto: 7m x 22.5m x 3m.
Midly Chandler, Penong, Eyre Peninsula has this leanto attached to one shed and it’s a great storage space. Here you can see stored spare tyres on the left.
The Fraser’s of Quorn added a leanto on the front of their shed as a shaded space to park vehicles while working in the workshop shed. Shed size: 15m x 30m x 6m. Leanto: 9m x 30m x 5.4m.
Leanto Extensions: A cost effective way to create more space
No farmer has ever been caught saying, “I wish I’d made my shed smaller. “ With farm machinery and equipment getting bigger, everyone it seems wants more space. Adding a leanto is a relatively inexpensive way to create more room for a wide range of purposes, some of which may relate to the shed they are attached to.
For example:
• Store spare tyres & parts for your machinery & vehicles
• A place to store implements not used throughout the year
• Smaller vehicles
• Hay & fodder, and more Bigger undercover areas do not have to blow your budget. Ask us how a new leanto can work for your farm operations.

Farm Workshop an Invaluable Asset
Many farmers say that their farm workshop is one of their most invaluable assets because it provides a clean, protected environment for performing repairs, maintenance and new project manufacturing that is out of the harsh sun, wind or rain.
Creating a workshop area now, even by adding a few bays to your existing shed, can give you the impetus to then complete long-intended repairs & new projects that improves your efficiency and reduces equipment down time.
Respected farmers often say that the workshop should have been one of thier first sheds.
Mildy Chandler, Penong, Eyre Peninsula. 15m x 12m x 5.4m Workshop shed. He says it should have been his first shed rather than his 5th from Grant Sheds, such is the value to him of having a dedicated workshop he can close up and work in on windy days, that they have lots of, being by the coast!
Shaun Taylor, Bordertown. 9m x 24m x 4.2m Machinery Shed & Workshop. Workshops may be an easy add-on to your existing shed.
Andrew Slater, Curramulka, Yorke Peninsula. 15m x 30m x 6.3m Machinery Shed with enclosed section for secure workshop. You can add bays to your existing Grant shed to create a new workshop now.
A small farm ‘home shed’ for the ute or family car plus enclosed small workshop, hobby shed or family games room is a project to consider.
David Shaw, Renmark built on a ‘Garaport’ on the end of his shed. That’s a roof only section where he can drive through from side to side, park vehicles in from the end or it can serve as a ‘party area.’
