MEGA Machinery Shed

CASE STUDY

Why Built: To store more machinery. Property: “Yarrabee” Location: Kulpara, Upper Yorke Peninsula SA Owner: The Rundle Family, Rundle Farming Parents Grant & Clare, Brothers Mark & Paul Wives Anita & Stephanie

27m x 60m x 7.5m MEGA Machinery Shed & Workshop. It has 1x12m wide beam & sliding doors for the workshop area (far end of shed as viewed on this photo), 1x18m wide beam & sliding doors in the centre (far side) and 4x4.5m wide doors on this near end giving an 18m wide opening. Plus vertical lift roller doors with windlocks for security on the wall at right of photo. All sliding doors are Grant Sheds unique easy-roll sliding door system.

Background: The Rundle Farming family needed more space to house their machinery & also provide a workshop where they could service their equipment out of the weather. Working with the expertise of Grant Sheds, the family was able to include their farming expertise and ideas in the design of their ideal farm shed. In the farmer’s words: “We couldn’t have hoped for a better shed.” “After obtaining quotes, we opted to go with Grant Sheds due to simplicity, ease & professionalism. Everything we asked to have in the shed has been done just as we like. And if we need another shed the first place we’d go is to Grant Sheds. It’d be pretty hard not to go with you again” Mark Rundle, Rundle Farming, Kulpara, Upper Yorke Peninsula SA

More Farmers talk about their MEGA Machinery Sheds “Happy with all aspects of the shed…” “Happy with all aspects of the shed … from ordering, delivery, erection of shed, builders and the customer service from Danny, Brenton, David, Alison and staff.

30m x 42m x 7m MEGA Machinery Shed & Workshop

Now we can take the wheels off trailers, and we can muck around with brakes, and we can do all sorts of stuff. Doesn’t matter if it’s raining, or it’s windy, or it’s hot, which is a great asset for me. I’m too old to be rolling around on dirt.”

Andrew Taylor, Pt Wakefield, SA

“Dealing with Grant Sheds was a great experience.” “After reading all the good comments in Farm Gate News over several years...and viewing a number of Grant Sheds videos, I was sure I was making the right decision. It seems you always use the best materials and leave nothing to chance. I’m extremely happy with my shed & I wouldn’t hesitate to build another one through you in the future. I highly recommend Grant Sheds. The shed was delivered on time & we were contacted frequently on the progress.” Stephen Allen, Broughton, Vic

n it’s stored compared to whe ted. outside, unprotec SA ith Ke , Rodney Lush

Built for David Eckert, Meningie SA: This 24m x 48.6m x 6.9m MEGA Hay Shed has 3 x 16.2m wide OWJ beams. These superwide beams mean fewer columns across the open front and minimal ‘hazards’ when David or his workers are negotiating the telehandler when storing and stacking, or outloading, hay bales.

Advantages of a Grant Sheds MEGA Hay Shed Protected hay: 3 3 3 3 3 3 3

Hay left out in the “big blue shed”:

Retains colour and quality Increases income and profits Easier to load and unload = better efficiency Saves off-farm storage costs Be paid to store export hay Hold your hay until prices rise 100% Immediate Tax Deduction for fodder storage*

X Can fetch up to 25% less than shedded hay X Storage, spoiling and loading issues often arise X Makes classifying and grading your hay more problematic X Misses opportunities to sell to export hay processors X No tax incentives

Another quality MEGA Hay Shed and Why Grant Sheds are Considered the Experts Galvanised Open Web Joist (OWJ) Roof Trusses for ultimate strength and durability.

8.1m bays perfectly suit 3 bales per bay & are the most popular. Other sizes also available.

High volume stormwater evacuation system. Fast draining even in heavy downpour situations. Ensures water drains away to prevent hay spoilage. Hot dipped galvanised UB columns won’t rust.

Vertical hay bumper rails prevent damage to wall iron when storing or outloading hay.

Super-strong UB columns to prevent tractor damage if bumped during storing & outloading hay.

Built for Tom Trengove, Jamestown SA: This 18m x 32.4m x 8.2m MEGA Hay Shed has 8.1m bays which are ideal for

storing 3 x 8’ wide hay bales per bay without being too tight nor wasting space in wider bays. Strong universal beam columns are super-strong and won’t be damaged should you, your workers or your contractors hit one while negotiating tractors and equipment within the shed.

MEGA Machinery Shed

CASE STUDY

Why Built: Storage of export hay Property: Stephenson Partners Location: Jamestown, mid-North SA Owner: Tyler Stephenson & Pauline Stephenson

24m x 48.6m x 8.2m MEGA Hay Shed. 8.1m bays allow easy and efficient storage of medium & large hay bales. Tyler confirms this shed has a capacity of 3250 high density large square bales - 9 high (10 at centre) x 3 bales wide per bay.

Background: The Stephenson’s had a nasty hay selling experience that made them keen to see their hay protected in the future ... “We had some hay left in big stacks in the paddock. One processor didn’t want it because of rain damage. Another checked its water solubility and took it for $120/t. If they hadn’t taken it we may only have got about $80/t for pellet hay.”

In the farmer’s words: “We could have paid off this shed in one year!” The difference between $175/t for shedded hay (2017) versus that worst case scenario of $80/t is $234,515 when this shed is used to its full capacity. Some examples of the hay value increases possible with this shed:- $40/t extra = $97,480 @ $60/t extra = $146,220 @ $80/t extra = $194,960 Two years after investing in this shed a cyclone-like storm ripped through the area. “It was like a cyclone, ripping out trees and damaging sheds. But this one remained standing … it was a pretty ferocious storm and it destroyed a lot of other local sheds. But this one withstood the test.” Tyler Stephenson & Pauline Stephenson, Jamestown SA

Respected Farmers talk about their MEGA Hay Sheds “Great experience highlighted...” Throughout the organising process, Sam worked alongside Grant Sheds, noting highlights of that experience included

18m x 52.5m x 5.5m MEGA Hay Shed in 7.5m bays

• “Good communication. • The quality of the shed and • The professionalism of the builders”

Sam Dodd, Dairy Farmer, Meningie SA

“If you’re going into hay production, your first investment should be a hay shed” • It keeps your product safely stored, and you can choose to sell when pricing is best • Be paid storage fees by exporters who buy your crop on spec. They’ll often buy provided it goes straight from the paddock to your shed.

#3 MEGA Grain Sheds Make More Money With A Grain Shed. They provide fast and easy storage at harvest time, give you high volume storage and can be used for machinery or hay storage when needed. Strong and wellbraced loadbearing framing to take the weight of stored grain.

Optional non-load bearing sliding doors to further protect & secure grain & machinery.

High 22° roof pitch matches angle of repose of stored grain.

Built for Ben Rowntree, Ardrossan, Yorke Peninsula SA: 20m x 36m x 6m Mega Bulk Grain Shed. The high roof pitch

allows grain to be stored at the same angle as grain & the 3.5m high grain lining, with added structural strength, supports the immense weight of stored grain. Sliding doors enclose & further protect stored grain & farm machinery stored off-season.

In the farmer’s words: “I know a few other Grant sheds around. I’ve seen a smaller version of this grain shed near Maitland and a brother-inlaw built a machinery shed from you guys… So I just realised that you’ve got a pretty good name in the shed building industry.” Ben Rowntree, Ardrossan SA “I can pick up $30-$40 per tonne with grain stored. Multiply that by 1000 tonnes & it’s an extra $30,000 pocketed. I have silos as well, but I like having both, each for specific reasons. And certainly the sheds are dual purpose because I can store my machinery in it too. It’s too valuable to leave out in the weather.” Kieran Hayter, Linga, Western Victoria

#4 MEGA Sheep Yard Covers Protection of yarded sheep reduces wet weather delays at your all-important shearing time. Rain and heat protection at other sheep handling times is also important for sheep and handlers. UB Columns are hot dip galvanized to prevent rusting.

Large spans of different sizes are available to suit your existing sheep yards.

Built for Annette & Damien Florance, Kangaroo Island SA: 26m span x 24m x 2.5m MEGA Sheepyard Cover. This building covers the existing sheepyards with no interior supporting columns to affect the yarding or impede sheep movement. Ideal wet weather and hot weather protection for sheep and workers and keeps sheep dry to reduce shearing delays in wet weather. 6

#5 Almond Storage Sheds Fast and Easy Storage for Weather Protection during your busy harvest season. No more inconvenient and time-consuming tarping required. Galvanised Open Web Joist (OWJ) Roof Trusses for ultimate strength and durability.

Special columns mean X bracing may not be required, giving better all-round accessability

Hot dipped galvanised columns won’t rust.

Built for Ian & Craig Burdon, Moorook SA: One of two 18m x 37.5m x 5.3m MEGA Almond Storage Sheds for the Burdon brothers. Universal column (rather than universal beam) have been used to give even better lateral stability than UB so no X bracing between the columns may be required, giving better all-round accessibility.

In the farmer’s words: “These sheds were built as almond stockpile covers to save significant time and effort covering the crop with tarps when wet weather is imminent. We basically had them built because otherwise the almonds had to be tarped when we had wet weather, and the tarping is very time consuming and sometimes dangerous if you have windy conditions. “When you do tarp them you have to remove the tarps after a short period because they get moisture build up underneath them, and it’s a haven for rodents as well. “Grant Sheds suggestion to add an extra metre of height to the structure at minimal cost is something we found invaluable and much appreciated advice. Loading trucks is a breeze now, not having to worry about clearance and being wider means I can make the stockpile larger and save ground space.” Ian & Craig Burdon, Moorook SA

Grant Sheds Unique, Easy-Roll Sliding Door System Explained You want your mega shed doors easy to roll open, reliable and not to blow in. Sliding doors for our Mega span shed range are often huge. This means there is a lot of weight and a very large wind-catching area. We have found that most commercially available door tracks and rollers just don’t measure up to the weight and wind challenges these doors will face. We’ve spent a lot of time and our expertise searching for the best design and components to make sure your shed doors will survive strong wind squalls, mini-cyclones, time and weather. Our bottom roll sliding doors are fitted to a square track and, along with heavy duty rollers machined to fit, it means the doors have a very positive ‘lock’ on the track so they cannot be blown off (unlike some commercially available, rounded tracks & rollers). We’re only talking about the shape and a few millimetres of material, but it’s that precision and attention to detail that makes all the difference with a Grant Mega Shed.
