How Heartgard Plus Works?

The potent formula of Heartgard Plus contains two active ingredients Ivermectin and Pyrantel Pamoate. Ivermectin was already present in Heartgard but as Merial updated its product, they fortified the formula with an added ingredient Pyrantel pamoate in their new version. These two active ingredients are absorbed in the bloodstream. So, as and when Ivermectin comes in contact with the floating microfilaria (juvenile Dirofilaria Immitis/heartworms), the chemical causes irregular muscle spasms in the worms which leads to their death. Pyrantel pamoate also acts as a neuromuscular blocking agent which causes sudden contractions of muscles in roundworms and hookworms when they come in contact with the chemical through the circulatory system, eventually leading to their death. Thus, both the ingredients work similarly.

However, since Ivermectin doesn’t have any action on intestinal worms, the other ingredient is necessarily required to kill the additional worms in the intestines.
