KLASSics Team Here we are one year later. This time last year we were all learning to grapple with this pandemic, a new experience for most of us. We had no idea what the remainder of 2020 had in store for us. Today we are grateful for being able to pivot and still provide our alumni with new services and help support their business in every little way possible. With vaccinations rates increasing and travel restrictions easing into the future, we are looking forward to having more opportunities to connect with you and contribute more to our alumni community.

In this issue, we explore at the expression of art as it symbolises the fluidity of representing different perspectives. The whole world has experienced this pandemic and everyone’s experience is different. This issue of KLASSics Chronicle takes a dive into the artistic world with #KLASSicsKonfidential, featuring a former parent pivoting her work through sketching and finding inspiration in the least expected places. Our #InLivingColours section looks at alumni who are rising to new heights in their industries.

4 • Message from the Head of School

Welcome to this edition of our KLASSics Chronicle. What an extraordinary time we are living through and what a way to go through our 75th year in Malaysia!

We will end this school year as we started, with both of our campuses closed and government restrictions in place that are considered necessary to slow the chain of COVID-19 infections following a recent increasing high number of new cases.

In navigating our way through the COVID-19 pandemic in Malaysia this academic year, we have seen a continuation of the uncertainty, challenge, resilience and success that have affected school life and strengthened and shaped us as a school community.

Some of our stories in this edition look at the art of adapting, very appropriate considering the situation we are all dealing with during the ongoing pandemic worldwide. At a time of restricted physical social connection, our technological age has offered us new routes to stay connected. As we limit our in-person social engagement to slow the spread of COVID-19, we have needed to be more proactive to keep social interactions a part of our daily routine.

Although it is an academic year that has been

very different, the achievements of our students, the richness of school life and learning, and the character, culture and diversity of our community have been clearly evident. We have continued to fulfil our mission and to reach for the stars, striving to make the Alice Smith experience the best it can possibly be, even under exceptional circumstances.

Whether it has been onsite at our campuses or online as a result of campus closures, our teachers have done their very best to provide a learning experience to meet the needs of their students. Our support staff have managed school business behind the scenes, both onsite and when working from home, to ensure that the school can continue to operate effectively, whether we be open or closed for F2F learning and teaching. Our staff, students, governors and parents have been adaptive and flexible, as we have responded to the changing circumstances of the pandemic.

Message from the Head of School • 5 This school year has reinforced for me what shapes meaningful learning the most and how vitally important the quality of relationships and personal connections are between students, teachers, parents and families. It has strengthened my belief in the vital importance of working together and being together, of having students and teachers physically present onsite in school for the most powerful learning to happen. It is very difficult to replicate this experience virtually although we can try to do our best.

I am incredibly grateful for our response as a school community. Our teachers have committed their time and efforts to inspire, understand, connect, guide and care for our students. Parents have been patient and understanding, assisting at home with online learning, supporting the efforts of teachers and encouraging both their children and their teachers during a disruptive and uncertain school year academically and socially.

The Alice Smith School Foundation has continued to serve the wider community, with generous donations to our Build Kindness Campaign supporting families in need with food in KL city.

Congratulations to our Year 13 Class of 2021.

Their adaptability, resilience, perseverance and determination have been evident through an incredibly uncertain period of time at arguably one of the most important stages of their lives.

They graduate in style with many successes and achievements, individually and collectively, that are deserving of the highest accolades.

Our response to the pandemic has reaffirmed for me what makes KLASS so special, our achievements being testament to the spirit, ambition and determination that is such an enduring feature of the Alice Smith story.

I look forward to celebrating our 75th anniversary with you in my final year at KLASS.

The road to finding your true passion can be found in the most unexpected of places. Read about how our former parent, Gladys Simpson, found her love for urban sketching.

KLASSics Konfidential • 7 Tell us about yourself and your journey of being an artist.

I studied graphic design at Malaysian Institute of Art in Kuala Lumpur. After graduating in December 1990, I started work at a publisher as a graphic designer working on a magazine called ‘Woman at Work’.

Two years later, I joined an advertising agency called Saatchi & Saatchi Integrated as an Art Director. The agency later merged with Bates Malaysia. I was with Bates USP Direct for six plus years. We were the unit that specialised in direct marketing. I’ve worked on brands such as Telekom, HSBC, Uncle Tobys, Benson & Hedges, Malaysia Airlines, Panasonic and others. Soon, my first child came along and I decided to freelance.

I was employed as a permanent freelance Art Director, at Foote, Cone & Belding (FCB).

I took a break from my career when my husband was posted to work overseas from 2005 to late 2009. During the break, I took up painting. First with acrylics and then with oils. But it was not until late 2012 that I started honing my colour pencil skills, drawing portraits of dogs. Couple of friends who were animal lovers would commission portraits of their dogs and that gave me the confidence to start my pet portraits business. I’ve received commissions from the USA, UK and New Zealand.

Soon after I discovered ‘urban sketching’ in August 2014 during our family trip to Saigon. My first sketch was from the hotel window. And the rest, is history.

I am also lucky to be surrounded by like minded people. I’m part of a group of thousands of urban sketchers worldwide. We sketchers love to sketch together but since the pandemic we have taken to sharing and catching up on Zoom often.

What’s the most memorable project that you’ve undertaken during the pandemic?

In October 2020, I was commissioned to draw around 30 pieces of A4 size illustrations for a developer in Jakarta, Agung Sedayu Group. It was for the launch of a Chinese themed food court called Pantjoran PIK in North Jakarta. The illustrations are used for eight posters that are now placed around the beautifully built food court. My task along with the writer was to educate visitors to Pantjoran PIK about the Chinese influence in Indonesia through food and culture, with the arrival of the Chinese as early as the 13th century. It was such an eye opener throughout this process. It took me about six weeks from concept to completing the illustrations.

How are artists adapting to the current pandemic situation?

Many artists have started art classes online or do interviews via Zoom. In November 2020, I was a guest speaker on @Zafigo_travel via Instagram Live.

Datin Marina Mahathir was the host and we talked about ‘Traveling Through Journaling and Art.’ And that travel sketching was still possible within a 2km radius!

How are you adapting to the new norm now?

I used to love spending time visiting art galleries or sit at a café sketching. I could just spend hours there.

In the early months of the pandemic, galleries and many eateries were closed. I was stuck at home for three months! Like it or not, I kept busy cleaning, cooking and of course sketching and painting. I assume other artists also found time to experiment and paint.

I believe one can find inspiration anywhere and I find it during my long walks and bike rides.

How do you find inspiration to keep you going during these unprecedented times now?

Eventually Jakarta lifted the lockdown and I had more freedom moving around. Being new to Jakarta, I really love exploring my neighbourhood. I’d go for morning walks and sketch the local vendors. From pushcarts to carrying their ware with a wooden pole over their shoulder to strapping a basket on their backs. They are my most favourite subject to sketch.

Thank goodness for technology. Artists can still reach out to the masses. Virtual art exhibitions are the in-thing now.

What’s your advice to aspiring young artists?

It’s possible to work on it. You need to constantly draw, paint or sketch. Carry a small sketchbook and sketch everywhere. I can’t help but bring one on date nights with my husband. I’ve even sketched while I was admitted to hospital for food poisoning. I sketched my saline drip. Explore different mediums. To make progress, you have to learn to be comfortable being uncomfortable. Lastly, never compare yourself with other artists. Learn from them instead. Slowly, you’ll develop your own style and uniqueness.

How has the pandemic affected the creative industry?

How are you adapting to the new norm now?

The pandemic has definitely affected the creative industry in many ways. Many companies are suffering financially and are therefore having budget cuts. They are either looking to create their own campaigns in-house for cost saving purposes or they have a very small budget for the same amount of work to be done. Events aren’t happening anymore. Many nightlife outlets are struggling, including performers, dancers and deejays. With a lot of creatives’ main source of income being limited, many people have resorted to different outlets. The pandemic has also caused people to be more creative in the way they do things, adapting to the times. Moving their opportunities online, there is an increase of online shows, online performances, and online festivals. For me, the experience isn’t the same but it’s a good way for people to branch out.

What’s the most memorable project that you’ve undertaken during the pandemic?

I usually tend to create multiple projects a year, pushing myself to make work day in and day out. However, the pandemic has drained me mentally. But it has also allowed me to sit back and take that necessary rest that I never gave myself fully. Having said that, I created one main project in 2020, for KL20x20. It revolved around 20 creative individuals whom I believe have inspired me and are also paving the way for the next generation of creatives with the work that they do. It was an exciting project. I was able to sit down with people whom I admire, people whom I’ve known for ages, and have conversations again. Ones that allowed me to visualise my work in a different manner and perspective. Apart from the process, it was exhibited in a mini photography festival in KL and that has enhanced my experience.

Daniel Adams shares with us his journey in pivoting the art scene during this unexpected pandemic and how finding your niche will help you strengthen your skills in the art industry.

Tell us about yourself.

I’m a conceptual portrait photographer. A lot of my work revolves around specific social or political issues that are close to home.

I was born and raised in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. I lived just for a while in London and Puerto Rico in my earlier years.

Share with us your journey of being a conceptual portrait photographer/creative directing.

It has definitely been a journey to say the least. I started off creating very stand alone images that were very post processing heavy. However, my years in university have enabled me to understand and strengthen my skills to create actual bodies of work, pushing me to put a lot more of myself (whether it be my emotions or identity or culture) into the work. I started creating work that feels more natural and real, focusing my energy on topics that are very socially or politically charged, allowing me to try and make a change in today’s current society. It’s been an interesting journey and I’m very happy with where I am at the moment. I can’t wait for what happens in the future!

Has your experience during your time at Alice Smith helped shape who you are today?

I was only at Alice Smith for a mere 2 years but I think the sense of community, especially within the Sixth Form bubble was really strong. It has taught me more about being there for others and helping people in times of need.

10 • In Living Colour How has the pandemic affected the creative industry?

How are you adapting to the new norm now?

With production houses, theatre companies and dance studios suffering from the MCO and almost everything being put to a halt, the impact on our industry hasn’t been great but we do what we can to get through it.

In terms of adaptability, the founders of Liver and Lung, Shaf and Hannah, really lived up to the saying “the show must go on!”. Working together, we fortunately managed to have an online streaming and Q&A session for Sepet the Musical. A few months later, we released a Spotify album and an online screening for Mahsuri & Other Peculiar Tales.

Of all the roles you have played in the past, which is your favourite? And what is your dream project?

Orked from Sepet - the chance to play her character came about during a turning point in my life and there were character traits of hers which I found relatable. It’s also an honour to be part of the late Yasmin Ahmad’s work! Besides this, I was really proud of my role as a TV presenter for Disney SEA even though I wasn’t playing a character. This was a different challenge and an amazing experience.

This is the story of Badrika Baluch. She shares her journey of finding her niche in the industry of performing arts by exploring the different roles it offers and how it has helped her flourish her talents and skills.

As for dream projects, I’ve always been torn between TV and stage as they’re two different worlds yet I love them both the same. Stage wise, I would love to play Nala (Lion King), Wednesday Addams (Addams Family) or Sophie Sheridan (Mamma Mia!). For TV, my dream would be to star in a Netflix series or a Disney movie. Even better if I could bag a role as a Disney Princess!

Has your experience during your time at Alice Smith as a student and teacher helped shape who you are today?

Absolutely. Having been on both sides of the fence, I truly feel like a well-rounded person today.

Tell us about yourself.

I’d say that I’m creative and outgoing. I love exploring and challenging myself in different fields which explains how I ended up in both education and performing arts.

I was only 3 when I did my first commercial and as I got older, my love for acting continued to grow.

Share with us your journey of being an actress.

You have recently starred in a stage adaptation of Yasmin Ahmad’s masterpiece film, Sepet the Musical and have also acted in a number of musicals. Please tell us about your experience.

It’s like being a superhero who can absorb the power of others; I’m taking on the emotions and traits of each character and I believe that develops me as a performer and person. It can be exhausting, especially since most actors, like me, have a day job on top of performing! You learn a lot of discipline and balance from this.

I’ve been in theatre since the age of 9 but the most recent production, Sepet, was an experience close to my heart due to its purpose, storyline and the team involved who are like my family. We started rehearsing in July 2019, thinking this would be a small-scale tribute to the late and great Yasmin Ahmad but the overwhelmingly positive response we received and the love that came out of this production kept it going.

The Art of Adapting The pandemic has forced many of us to adapt to a virtual life. Trying to pivot life virtually can be a struggle as we are all learning how to adapt to this new way of life together. KLASSics decided to take a look into the lives of teachers, students and our alumni to see how change has affected their daily lives.

Ms. Armstrong, former teacher at KLASS 2006 - 2015 and now a Deputy Head of the Biology Faculty at Kellett School, The British International School in Hong Kong tells us how she adapted to the sudden pandemic that brought us all into the virtual world.

Tell us about yourself.

I am a biology teacher, avid hiker and world traveller! I am inquisitive about new cultures, enjoy eating new foods and, perhaps more importantly, I like making genuine connections with new people. I love learning new things – at the moment my passion is for learning about cognitive science. The brain is fascinating!

Teaching

What method or activity have you had to implement to adapt to virtual teaching?

Teaching virtually has meant adapting almost all of my resources. It has also made me reflect more on how I explain things. I have used Screencastify a lot to pre-record some lessons – it’s been interesting listening to them back and thinking – how can I make that clearer? Zoom is also an integral part of my lessons when teaching remotely too – it took some getting used to but now I’m a whiz with polls, breakout rooms and spotlighting! I am always looking out for new ways to engage students when I’m not in the room with them – which is exciting and it has developed me as a practitioner even more.

What is the funniest moment you have encountered when teaching virtually?

Probably those moments when a student’s mic hasn’t been turned off and they’ve openly groaned about having ‘homework’ to do, or a parent has walked into the room and not realised their child is having a lesson. It’s always fun to see a mortified teenager on screen!

Mr. Howard, current teacher and Head of Sixth form (KLASS 2016 - present) shares with us his take on tackling virtual teaching.

Tell us about yourself and what you teach at Alice Smith.

My name is Andrew Howard. I am very old and teach History and look after the Sixth Form at Alice Smith.

What inspired you to teach and choose Alice Smith?

My wife and I were living in Shanghai and wanted to stay in Asia but wanted a better school for our three boys. When we asked around about the best schools in Asia, three names kept coming up, Alice Smith was one of them. We haven’t been disappointed.

Share with us your experience of virtual teaching that has been ongoing for more than a year now.

Virtual teaching was horrendous to start with but I now enjoy it more than being in school! :) How did you adapt to the new way of learning and teaching as a family while having to parent and teach together, especially when you and your wife, Nicola are teachers?

My wife is one of the Vice Principals at the Secondary Campus so she had more power than me when we decide who would escape the children and get back into school. We also got a dog and a play station which helped a lot with behaviour management at home.

What would the students be surprised to find out about you?

My hobby is pushing a heavy bar from my chest up, whilst lying down on a bench.

If you could retire now, what would you like to do?

If you could pass any wisdom to your students, what would you like to share with them?

Care less what people think, marry well and if you are good at something work hard at it.

This is the journey of our alumna, Charissa Lee, the former scholar and alumna (2017-2019) of The Alice Smith School. She is currently pursuing her undergraduate studies at the Wesleyan University, United States. Read on how she had to cope with different time zones and her advice to fellow peers.

In April 2020, I was forced to leave Wesleyan and moved back to Malaysia due to the pandemic. Upon arrival back home, I was sent to the Grand Millennium Hotel for the 2-week quarantine. I attended all six of my classes online; I started class at 9pm and ended class at 10am the next morning.

For the next eight months at home, my schedule was similar; starting class at 9pm and ending class at 4am. This has negatively affected my mental health because I was not getting enough rest and I felt a great sense of isolation and frustration. Nevertheless, my family has been extremely supportive, making my virtual learning as easy as possible. I am now back in the States for my studies.

Wesleyan had done a good job in managing the pandemic and I believed that it would have a positive impact on my mental health by being back on campus.

My advice for students who are trying to cope with different time zones and virtual learning is to have a defined routine and schedule, speak to your family, friends and therapists, and be honest with your teachers/instructors so that they can understand your circumstances and accommodate your needs.

The Art of

Learning This is the journey of our alumnus, Hong Yau Yap (2011-2018). He is currently pursuing Medicine (MBChB) at the University of Leicester. Read about how he manages the challenges of being a front line worker in the UK and his experience of being vaccinated.

Being a medical student on clinical placement meant we had to be in hospitals and GP surgeries along with healthcare staff throughout the pandemic. I had multiple contacts with COVID positive patients whilst on placement but was fortunate enough to not be infected. I made sure to wear PPE when in contact with patients and to be aware of the constantly changing situation around me - which patients were COVID positive, which were awaiting their COVID results, which wards are under quarantine etc. Although we were all on edge, I thoroughly enjoyed my clinical experience.

As we are in constant contact with patients, we are considered to be frontline workers and I was offered the vaccine by the GP surgery I was placed in. It would depend on the location you are placed for the type of vaccine you’re allocated in the UK. I, personally, was given the Pfizer vaccine. I did not experience any side effects and I haven’t been infected with COVID-19 since so I can assume that the vaccine is working. But I am still following the safety guidelines set up by the NHS so nothing has really changed much for me in regards to day to day life.

The Art of Survival KLASSics caught up with Dr. Navin Roshaan Jayasingam. As a medical officer, Dr. Navin was informed by the Ministry of Health Malaysia in October 2020 to serve in Queen Elizabeth Hospital (HQE) in Kota Kinabalu as part of a coronavirus response team that was being sent to address the alarming increase in coronavirus cases in Sabah.

Treating the Coronavirus in a Prison It has been a full year and seven months since the emergence of the coronavirus. This invisible and virulent cousin of SARS pervades through developed and developing nations and continues to take many lives even today. This pandemic has not only had an impact on humanity in terms of health, but has blighted economies as well as societal structures and norms on an unprecedented global scale.

For most affected areas, the majority of patients survive with sensible triaging and treatment and can integrate back into the community. However, there are some victims of the disease who survive but unfortunately continue to suffer from complications resulting from the infection, for instance, permanent organ damage, some of which require long term treatments and follow ups.

Frontliners, which include doctors, nurses, policemen, cleaners, engineers, blue collar and white collar workers who work on essential service sectors such as health, food, energy and water, are required to continue maintaining the basic functional requirements of every society and to also adapt to the frequent changes in rules and regulations set by government agencies in response to the peaks and troughs of coronavirus cases.

As a medical officer, I was informed by the Ministry of Health Malaysia in October 2020 that I had been assigned to Queen Elizabeth Hospital (HQE) in Kota Kinabalu as part of a coronavirus response team that was being sent to address the alarming increase in coronavirus cases in Sabah.

After a whole week of stressful preparations and a two-and-a-half-hour flight across the South China Sea, I finally checked into a hotel and reported for duty at HQE. To read more on Dr. Navin’s journey please click here.

A huge congratulations to our alumna, Francesca Chia (KLASS 1999 2004), CEO and Founder of GoGet on her appointment to the National Employment Council of Malaysia (NEC). NEC was set up to maintain and create jobs in line with the government’s efforts to focus on recovery and revival of the economic sector in Malaysia. Our alumnus, Benjamin Proud (KLASS of 2011) yet again makes a name for himself in the world of aquatic. He will head to his second Olympic Games after being named in Great Britain’s swimming squad for Tokyo.

He has previously won World, European and Commonwealth titles and finished fourth in the men’s 50m freestyle final at the last Olympics in Rio. He also had an amazing swim finishing at 21.42s seconds at the 50m freestyle at the British Swimming Olympic Trials in London, second fastest time in the world this year. The Alice Smith School started 2021 on a high note!

Our Secondary Campus won the Inclusion category at the International School Awards 2021 with the initiative, ‘KLASS Student-Support Programme: empowering students to lead on in class support’.

The programme involves our Year 12 students putting forward subjects they would like to volunteer support in at Key Stage 3-4.

The Personalised Learning Faculty will match these preferences to requests made by teachers for assistance in their classes for initially one period per week. Training is then provided for these volunteers. The aid provided by Year 12 students has moved beyond the targeting of SEN students and now covers all students within a given class or lesson, i.e. there is an equality of experience across students in lessons that allows for targeted SEN support in an environment where all students are accessing this.

Our alumni are doing wonders for the less privileged community! KLASSics is proud to showcase the community work that these individuals are doing. Support our alumni by giving and encouraging their philanthropic causes.

Jacqui Brinkhorst, our former parent, (KLASS 2010-2019) is inspired by the colours, patterns and textures of the glass and other materials she uses, especially by the versatility and chameleon-like quality of the medium. Over the years, she has been evolving her way of working as an artist resulting in additional dimensions to her already mature techniques working with glass, ceramic and other mosaic materials. The base for her mosaic art consists either of shaped wooden panels, or cemented hand-shaped wire structures.

Masks have been a major preoccupation of Jacqui’s work reflecting those of the indigenous tribes of Borneo. Her current work looks further afield to other parts of Asia and Africa, in the serene beauty of a sleeping Buddha-, or a Geisha inspired piece, which again reflects in other projects, including 3D sculptures, wood- and cement-panels.

Last Christmas, Jacqui donated RM 4,000 to the Kechara Soup Kitchen Society in support of our Foundation’s #BuildKindness campaign. She raised money from her small mosaic animals, with the addition of bells, Christmas trees, stars and snowflakes, that quickly became lovely Christmas Hangers. Check out her work here.

In memory of Sophie Laking, a former parent (KLASS 2006 2013), a fund was set up in July 2013 to support the education and welfare of the girls at the Home of Peace, Kuala Lumpur.

During her time living in Kuala Lumpur, Sophie had volunteered at The Home of Peace. The home was established by Justine Morais in 1993 to offer a safe, family environment for girls born in KL, who were orphaned, abandoned or whose parents could no longer afford to keep them.

Sophie and her family were close to the girls, and to Justine, and it was decided it would be fitting to maintain a connection by establishing an educational fund to assist the girls in their development and education. You can support their cause here.

Former student (KLASS 1999 - 2004), Annabelle Hutter’s Born on Saturday was established in March 2020, with the aim to address the gap of 100% recycled cotton brands missing from the market. Founded and whollyowned by Annabelle Hutter, they are the first brand based in Bangkok with a certified fully sustainable supply chain and 100% recycled end product.

They recycle fabric waste and industrial waste to then make high-quality, circular product for everyday use. Each bag is a symbol of pioneering the use of natural plant-based recycled cotton, a recycling production process which is purely mechanical and uses no chemicals or bleaching processes to regenerate fibres. #GivingNews • 21 Tengku Zatashah, former student (KLASS 1978 - 1983) has been an advocate for multiple initiatives and charities. She is currently the Royal Patron for Make-A-Wish Malaysia, on the Board of Trustees of Selangor of Youth Community, Yayasan Raja Muda Selangor, Yayasan Food Bank Malaysia and The Alice Smith School Foundation.

During the fasting month, Tengku Zatashah initiated her #zerofoodwastage campaign which she kickstarted in 2016.

The campaign collaborated with 14 hotels in KL to distribute excess food from their Ramadhan buffets. Through the #zerofoodwastage campaign in partnership with Kechara Soup Kitchen Society (KSK), they collected 1,737.62 kg of surplus food to feed 1,727 beneficiaries, comprising urban poor families, shelter homes, orphanages and elderly folks. She is an active KSK volunteer and strong supporter of our Foundation’s #BuildKindness campaign.

Datin Dr. Shireen Hashim, former student (KLASS 1970 - 1976) is the Group COO of KRU Group of companies. In 2017, she and her husband, Dato’ Norman established Yayasan KRU to support Malaysian youth from the B40 families to pursue skills based tertiary education programmes related to creative industry and digital entrepreneurship.

They have recently developed a non-financial youth development programme to create a sustainable ecosystem to address the digital divide among Malaysian youth. The programme is known as “Kita Jaga Kita” (means “We Take Care of Ourselves”). The foundation welcomes all forms of contributions of ICT assets (smart mobile phones, tablets, laptops and desktops) that are in good working condition. Learn more here. Former parent, Datuk Dr. Vinod Sekhar (KLASS 2000 - 2018) is the Petra Group Chairman and Chief Executive. His Vinod Sekhar Foundation has been providing assistance in various forms to reach out to the marginalised communities in wake of the current pandemic. His Foundation has recently sponsored the food aid programme in Klang.

Harith Iskander, former student (KLASS of 1971) and his wife Dr. Jezamine Lim established The Hope Branch, an initiative to raise funds for those affected by the pandemic. They have been delivering aid in the form of food, toiletries and basic supply to the homeless and urban poor in rural areas around Malaysia.

The Hope Branch is also fundraising to cover costs of purchase and delivery of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) as well as daily supplies for daily wage earners, homeless and immigrants. They are also contributing PPE to health frontliners, Selangor Police, Perak Police, Hospital Kuala Lumpur, University of Malaya Medical Centre and other vulnerable hospitals. Learn more here.

Our #BuildKindness Journey.

Making a Difference in our community.

The ongoing pandemic has brought out the best of our community when it comes to kindness, an important value at the heart of every individual.

In Aid of the 25 Urban Poor Families in Malaysia Our community has donated generously to our #BuildKindness campaign, raising 17 months of food sustenance in cash and in-kind worth RM 169,134.30 to support 25 urban poor families of Kechara Soup Kitchen Society. As Malaysia was in full lockdown again recently, this donation together with the first RM 20,000 donated last year, has provided them with much needed food aid during these challenging times.

With over 5,000 alumni whom we are in contact with now, 40 alumni who represent 0.8% of our alumni community supported this campaign. Many thanks to the alumni who have donated and built kindness with us together. You did it! Your kindness has helped!

Our Year 9 students supported the campaign by developing promotional posters and videos to help raise funds as part of their service learning. They also branded and packaged 76 lovely sewn items made by the single mothers and vulnerable women of the Kechara Soup Kitchen. Watch the video here.

#GivingNews • 23 Volunteerism - A Form of Giving and Building Kindness Our Foundation welcomes 47 alumni, parents, staff, students and individual volunteers who joined the Alice Smith Supporters Programme. They participated in their first volunteer work with Kechara Soup Kitchen Society. In Support of Learning To support the learning of the vulnerable Malaysian students who will be sitting for their SPM examination (IGCSE equivalent) later this year, our school’s Macbooks worth RM 17,900 were refurbished and donated to SMK Seri Kembangan, the partner of our Foundation’s inter-school project. This enabled the senior students to use the device for their online studies, assignments and research. Every gift counts and will make a difference on these students.

It started off with a nostalgic trip at both the Primary and Secondary campus followed by an evening of cocktails and dinner at the residence of the British High Commissioner.

The final big bang took place on 16th of November with the Platinum Gala Ball! It was a fantastic night of glitz and glamour with our community.

We are so eager to celebrate the 75th Diamond Gala Ball with you on 18th June 2022.

In this issue of Teacher Feature, we interviewed a teacher who has served at the Alice Smith School for 33 years!

She is loved by all who took her class and are in awe every time they come back to school for a visit.

As Madame Wong is finally hanging up her teaching shoes, we thought we will take this opportunity to let her say a few words.

It’s sad to hear that you are leaving Alice Smith. Tell us about your time here at KLASS. And where you are headed to.

Alice Smith means a lot to me as a foreigner in this country and I have thoroughly enjoyed my 33 years at school. I am very grateful and feel indebted to the school for a number of reasons: firstly for supporting me through my masters, enabling me to learn continuously and develop as a professional and a human being. I love being in the classroom, interacting with students and guiding their thinking in all that they do; secondly for providing a very good education for my children who really developed their skills whilst being at this school; thirdly for enabling me to live a very decent lifestyle and retire comfortably.

My plans for now are to take life easy for a while and support my daughter as she starts her family in Australia.

What inspired you to teach and chose Alice Smith?

Back in 1998, the school was seen as being very secluded for the elite. At that time I was teaching part-time in Alliance Française as well as giving tuition classes. My friend who was covering for an Alice Smith teacher insisted that I go and see the Principal who was looking for a French teacher. She arranged the meeting for me and I never expected to be employed on the spot! I was very happy about it.

Can you share with us your experience of virtual teaching and then finally being back to in-person teaching these last few months?

At first, it felt surreal to be on my own in my working room, speaking to a computer, lesson after lesson. I found the first few lessons of virtual teaching very, very tiring and difficult. I also learned that I expected too much from students and myself. As time went by, I adjusted to it and students were very helpful and supportive with the technology and in submitting their work. It has been the most difficult teaching period of my career. However, I got used to it by now, I am coping much better and I have even done hybrid lessons.

What would the students be surprised to find out about you?

I have lived longer in Malaysia than in France.

If you won a lottery and decided to give up teaching, what would you do instead?

I would like to help others, especially the needy and urban poor. I would look into their needs and sponsor some of them.

What makes a ‘good day’ at school?

A good day at school is when I feel ‘in the flow’ and everything feels good. It is when students have understood something, I feel it is a special moment.

A good day at school is when I have helped someone to learn and understand something, feel better about themselves, and look at the bigger picture.

What sort of morning routine do you have to get jazzed for class?

Well I like my routine to be the same everyday.

First of all, I need to have all my lessons and marking done the night before and my bag must be ready. Next, I need to get up on time, get ready and have breakfast because I am very hungry in the morning. Then I need to leave on time because I don’t like to be late and go through traffic jams.

When I reach school and have settled at my desk, I always go to the MFL office, have a chat with Dorothy, collect my MFL coffee, go back to my desk and talk to Rachel. A little while later, I catch up with Jane and I am ready to work.

In which other teacher’s class would you like to enroll, even for a day? Why? I would like to enroll in Maria’s history class because a number of her former students have said that they love her lessons so much that they could sacrifice any subject but not history. I remember Celeste Delort telling how much she loved her history lessons. There must be something special about her history lessons because my daughter had said the same thing when she had to choose her A Level subjects in 2006.

I would also love to learn Maths with Miss Whittington, and even thought that I might consider sitting for the Maths GCSE exam.

What current trends (among students) are baffling to you? Why? • How good and quick they are with technology • How mature they can be even in Year 7 • How knowledgeable they are compare to my days • How confident they are in interacting with adults • How talented some of them are: the sports results, academic results, art work, musical events and drama production are evidence of that

It’s always sad to see your favourite teachers Voyage n F o a leave and it’s even harder when they rewell and B have been around for many years. These long serving teachers are on their next adventure in life and we wish them all the best!

Our Head of School, Mr. Roger Schultz will be retiring in July 2022. By then, Mr. Schultz will have given twelve years of outstanding service to our school. His vision and leadership of our school has made Alice Smith one of the world’s leading British international schools.

We would like to thank Mr. Schultz for all his hard work, passion and dedication to us all. Our school community will have many opportunities to thank him for his exceptional contribution to Alice Smith over the course of the next one year. It’s not a goodbye! But it’s I’ll see you later. Thank you Mdm. Wong, Pn Azizah, Sergeant Lee, Mr. Slade and Ms. Gosling for all your great years of service! You’ve contributed so much to the development of our students. These five incredible long serving teachers will be spending their last term at the Alice Smith School.

Former students, parents and staff gathered online in early July to bid farewell to them with some joining us from the UK, Australia and as far as from Canada. In memory of Kennie

Dowle

Our former KLASS EP Head of Drama, Mr Kennie Dowle was a remarkable teacher and person. He sadly passed away in early January 2021.

Europe Kennie joined Alice% Smith in September 2003 and

left in 2016. He was already a long standing, well regarded member of staff at the Secondary Campus.

For those of you who did know Kennie, who taught for 13 years at the Secondary Campus between 2003 and 2016, you will have fond memories of a creative and vibrant teacher, director, friend and colleague who has influenced and affected the future pathways of so many of our students.

KLASSICS BUDDY PROGRAMME Are you interested in mentoring or being mentored?

The KLASSics Buddy is an alumni mentoring programme that is designed to create mentorship opportunities for alumni.

The mentor-mentee relationship will have a profound influence on the alumni’s personal growth, academic achievement, career development as well as life values. A mentor is a guide, friend and resource who shares their education and professional experiences to help pave the way for our students and alumni to achieve their educational and career aspirations.
