In light of the current challenging situation, our team has made a very hard decision to postpone a number of our engagements, including the alumni get-togethers in London, Singapore and Melbourne. We would like to assure our KLASSics members that your safety and wellbeing are our priority and that we will find a way to continue providing those opportunities in the future. Our stories in this issue revolve around social impact on the community and environment through our alumni social enterprises. Michelle Campbell (KLASS 1998 – 2001) who is our cover feature is doing wonders for the wildlife in Africa. Read more about the work she does and what inspired her to be a wildlife ranger in the Konfidential section. This time around we also have a parent alumni who impacts the community of people with learning disabilities. Read more on how Jane Chong inspires them to step out of their comfort zone in our In Living Colour section. We hope through the stories shared by our alumni and school community, you will be inspired to make a difference too.

MESSAGE

As I near the end of my tenth year with KLASS, I never would have thought to be leading a school during such extraordinary and exceptional circumstances as the one we are now experiencing with the Covid-19 virus. It is perhaps very fitting that our focus in this issue is on the impact we can have on others and our world through our actions, as individuals or collectively.

The significance of human physical interaction and connection that exists in schools has never been more challenged than in the current situation the world is facing. On 25 th March 2020, UNESCO reported that over 160 countries have implemented nationwide closures of schools, impacting over 87% of the world’s student population.

I am sure that we all have the deepest gratitude, respect and concern for everyone working at the front line in all of the health related and other essential services here in Malaysia and around the world at this time. Working lives and incomes have been affected, along with many of the day to day aspects of family life that we take for granted. We have a global fight on our hands and we all have a part to play, no matter how insignificant our individual role may seem to be.

To belong to a special community such as Alice Smith during this time inspires, comforts and humbles me. I work with amazing people who are unwavering in their commitment to our school community.

MESSAGE

As I pen my thoughts, we are nearing the end of our third week of school closure and during this time, the teaching staff have been working tirelessly to deliver a high quality learning experience for the students. They are fully committed to providing students with the best education possible and we are very proud of being able to provide such a comprehensive programme under these extraordinary circumstances.

In the hands of our creative, adaptive and dedicated teachers, a wide range of online tools and resources are being used to continue to guide, support, enrich and challenge our students.

It is wonderful to see how they have adapted so quickly and responded so positively to this change in their school life.

This week, following discussions with the Council of Governors, the school has taken the step to offer financial support and assistance to our families with school fees. This is the type of action we would expect from our school. It is during exceptional times like these that being a part of our very special Alice Smith School community really shines through.

Alice Smith School has weathered very challenging times through its 74 year history and I am sure it will do the same this time. The determination to do the right thing, to work hard and give our best and to help and support others is part of our heritage. The combined efforts of the school community continue to shape and sustain our school as we continue to build our community links locally, regional and globally and offer support through a wide range of educational, charitable and learning service activities.

The Alice Smith School Foundation continues to grow in its purpose and potential, thanks to the generosity of donors who have helped and supported us.

The dedication and spirit that we associate with Alice Smith is evident in the stories from our alumni and the activities and memories shared in this edition of KLASSics Chronicle.

We Heard You. Your Voice Matters!

In January 2020, KLASSics conducted an alumni membership survey, the second survey of all KLASSics members, the first being in 2017. The invaluable feedback has provided us a good insight on how we could build a strong alumni association together with our alumni.

The survey measures KLASSics members’ responses in four areas: • Experiential Engagement • Volunteering Engagement • Communication Engagement • Philanthropic Engagement

Distance is a challenge, so is the lack of information on volunteering opportunities. Most respondents cited distance as the main reason for not volunteering while some were not aware of the need to volunteer and have never been asked by the school to do so.

Volunteers can make a difference. For alumni who are keen to volunteer back in school, they are interested to share higher education and career experiences, mentoring younger alumni and Sixth Form students, volunteering at school events and taking part in alumni recruitment and outreach activities of KLASSics.

This invaluable insight will enable KLASSics to shape the future of our alumni association. With this in mind, KLASSics will embark on the following actions: • More alumni engagement events will be held in other countries with the support of our alumni by developing an effective engagement support system • Continue to develop interactive, meaningful and informative communication in various channels to improve engagement with our alumni • Develop higher awareness and engagement with our alumni to support the philanthropic work of the Foundation • KLASSics Buddy Programme will be introduced to enable our alumni to volunteer and support the mentorship programme, experience sharing on higher education and career, school events and alumni outreach activities. Meet The Wildlife Ranger Michelle Campbell Alumna 1998 - 2001 Director and Private Guide Wild Wonderful World, South Africa

“Not a day goes by where I am not thankful to be in the bush surrounded by incredible wildlife, and I feel proud to have broken through the corporate mould and followed my dreams.”

Like many of my peers at Alice Smith, I moved a lot as a child – I was born in South Africa, moved to Thailand, Malaysia (1998 - 2001), France, England, UAE and then back to South Africa, where I am still based today. My time at Alice Smith without a doubt set the precedent for my later years, where competitions in sport and academics alike formed a solid foundation on which to grow.

I often think back with fond memories to my time spent training for athletics at the Maybank stadium and hours spent in the pool under instruction from Mr Lee! After university, I worked as an economist for HSBC in Dubai, covering the Arab Spring and Middle East uprisings – an exciting time to be in the field of macroeconomics. It was my passion for wildlife and the African bush however, that fuelled a change, and I retrained as a professional safari guide back in South Africa. I found guiding far more aligned with my personal interests and it allowed me the unique opportunity to educate people about the complexities of nature and the vast number of threats to its very delicate balance.

Not a day goes by where I am not thankful to be in the bush surrounded by incredible wildlife, and I feel proud to have broken through the corporate mould and followed my dreams. I am more determined than ever to help protect and conserve wildlife in Africa for our future generations.

Do share with us more about your wildlife conservation journey...

I run a company called Wild Wonderful World, and my journey to getting here is rather unusual. In 2017, fuelled by the desire to do more to help save wildlife, myself and my partner Grant quit our jobs as safari guides and embarked on a conservation expedition across Africa. Understanding the threats to wildlife in our home country and what was being done to mitigate them was one thing, but what about the rest of Africa? There was only one way to find out, and that was to get out there, get involved on the ground and experience for ourselves what conservation in Africa really meant. It was quite funny, at the time, watching the reaction of people when we told them we were leaving to go live in our Land Rover for a year.

KLASSics KONFIDENTIAL We left South Africa in November 2017, and returned home 393 days and 19,040km later – wide eyed, overwhelmed and more inspired than ever. We travelled as far north as Murchison Falls National Park in Uganda, through desert, rainforest, lakes and some crazy remote places. We worked with all sorts of projects from anti poaching units to community outreach programmes, worked with people fighting poaching, people saving the orphaned wild animals and people working to stop poachers being poachers in the first place. We experienced lows like you can’t believe – nothing can ever prepare you for finding your first poached elephant – but incredible highs, too – watching as an orphan elephant whose mother was lost to poachers, take her first steps back into the wild after being lovingly nursed to health and raised for release.

The aim of our expedition was to gain a better understanding of the conservation issues across the continent and what was required in order to make a meaningful contribution, going forward. It is fair to say we developed a solid understanding of the issues and threats facing wildlife and return back to South Africa ready to start a journey of a different kind.

In 2019, we launched Wild Wonderful World, a company committed to conservation in Africa. Using a tiered approach focusing on three key areas – safaris, volunteering and corporate sponsorship – we have developed a model that focuses on connecting people from around the world to conservation projects in Africa, ultimately contributing to the funding needs of conservation.

Looking back on your journey so far, has your early years at Alice Smith School helped you get to where you are now?

My time at Alice Smith certainly contributed to my development - for one, I learned how to dedicate myself to my studies, and later work. It has been hugely rewarding setting up and running my own business, and I think the confidence I gained even as a young child at school has helped this happen. Being exposed to so many different people and cultures at Alice Smith also proved to be a huge advantage, where I’ve been able to connect with a much broader range of guests and colleagues than I would have been able to otherwise.

How do you build a self-sustaining enterprise while generating environmental impact?

Wild Wonderful World’s primary mission is to contribute to the conservation of wildlife in Africa.

There is no single approach when working to achieve this, so our contribution is multi-faceted.

From a self-sustaining enterprise perspective, the travel agency and tour operator activities of our business are fully for profit, and our environmental impact comes through the design of our itineraries - we only work with lodges and safari operators that make significant impacts themselves to the conservation of wildlife and development of communities, in the areas they are located. In addition, for every safari we book, Wild Wonderful World pledges a percentage of the total booking value to conservation projects.

More directly, we work with each of our clients/ guests to match them to a wildlife project and incorporate that project into their itinerary, which importantly includes a direct donation to the project. It is important to us that our guests experience for themselves how their donation is put to use; to meet the teams on the ground fighting to save wildlife and give them the opportunity to experience conservation work for themselves. In the words of Sir David Attenborough; “No one will protect what they don’t care about. And no one will care about what they have never experienced.”

Experience is enormously important – experiencing the thrill of a safari; experiencing animals roaming free in their natural habitat; experiencing the impact sustainable tourism has on local communities; experiencing what it takes to save animals from extinction. Our guests go home as advocates, spreading the message of conservation further still and often continue to support the wildlife project they spent time with.

How can our alumni start their part in making a social impact in small ways?

Advocacy. It can be as simple as having a conversation with your friends and family. In Africa, countless species are on the brink of extinction due to illegal poaching and wildlife trade. Education is key to saving these animals – rhino horn does not have any medicinal properties, neither do pangolin scales – they are both made from Keratin, the same as our fingernails. Exotic pets may seem exciting to own, but give thought as to which jungle or savanna they have been taken illegally from before being sold to you. If we can work together to change perceptions and the way we value our wildlife, our world would be an infinitely better place. What does the future look like to you?

When people say that natural spaces are disappearing, it means nothing until you drive through a country that once used to be all rainforest and is now 90% farmland. Nor does the gravity of poaching hit you until you walk through a rhino graveyard and visit the last 2 northern white rhinos left on our planet…

Sometimes, I feel it is almost impossible to imagine that anyone can change the course of extinction at this stage, but what has stood out to me more than anything, both during my conservation expedition and more so still in my work today, is the incredible people who are doing just that – making a difference. I don’t think we will ever be able to totally eradicate the loss of wildlife and wild areas on our planet, but we can certainly slow it down. I’ve learned that if everyone fights a corner, supports just one project that protects one area, then we stand a chance. So that is what my future looks like – one corner, one project, one fight at a time.

IMPACT MAKERS of education with good skill sets. However the employment situation in the UK is dire, with only 6% of adults with a learning disability in paid jobs. What a waste of talent and resources!

So we started Step and Stone, a bakery, creating high quality award winning lavosh flatbread, as a vehicle to help solve the problem. We have developed a rigorous training programme, covering eight key skill areas needed for the workplace.

We operate in a bespoke person-centered way, and to date seven of our trainees have moved into paid employment, in a diverse range of organisations including DEFRA, Greggs bakery, the Students Union at University of the West of England, Dunelm, amongst others.

We also run a popular social programme, as an important means of preventing loneliness. We are absolutely delighted to see genuine friendships now being enabled outside Step and Stone!

“If you think a situation needs improving, you can make a difference; break the problem down into small steps and identify your starting point.”

As a former parent, can you share with us about your time spent at Alice Smith?

My sons, Alexander and Andrew, were at the Alice Smith School during the 1990s and 2000s; with Alexander attending from Year 1 through to Year 13, and Andrew starting in Pre-school and finishing in Year 9.

During my time as a KLASS parent, I chaired the PTA for a number of years, and was a governor too.

It was an absolutely fascinating time in the development of the school to be on the board of governors, a period of rapid change as we worked on the concept and realisation of the secondary school.

Share with us your journey in running a social enterprise Together with a friend, also called Jane, I run a social enterprise in Bristol, England. We work with young people with learning disabilities, to improve the appalling job prospects they face on leaving education. Jane and I both have a child with Down Syndrome and we are aware that educational opportunities are so much better nowadays, with young people reaching the end

Has your experience at the Alice Smith School impact your goals/vision in any way?

The experience of being involved right from the beginning of the senior school gave me the insight that a seemingly daunting project in reality is a series of smaller steps! So start at the beginning and the rest follows on!

How do you build a self-sustaining enterprise while generating community impact?

Sustainability is a crucial goal, and we are not there yet after 3 and a half years. We are working hard to increase our income streams and be less reliant on grant funding, but it’s not easy.

How can our alumni start their part in making a social impact in small ways?

If you think a situation needs improving, you can make a difference; break the problem down into small steps and identify your starting point. And importantly, don’t reinvent the wheel: look at what other people have done to solve issues and learn from them, so do your research thoroughly!

What does the future look like?

I think the future of social enterprise increasingly being seen as an efficient vibrant means to tackle social issues!

I strive to be an empowering leader, a proactive performer, and passionate game changer.

Our alumna Shen Ming Lee has certainly shown exceptional passion for food (like all Malaysians are!) - and not just in cooking and consuming it, but also in thinking further about the environmental sustainability and health impacts of our global food and agricultural systems. Through her current work, she empowers and supports agri-food innovators, tackles pressing food issues, and advocates for tech innovations in a better food future. Ultimately, she aims to help build and support a more sustainable, inclusive, and connected food system.

A soon-to-be graduate at Cornell University, she published her book titled “Hungry For Disruption: How Tech Innovations Will Nourish 10 Billion by 2050” in April 2019 in New York. The book paints a picture of how advances in technology and science will disrupt the future of food and is based on her interviews with dozens of agrifood entrepreneurs, investors, farmers, researchers, and scientists.

Congratulations on your book! Could you share more about the book with us?

Sure. The impetus for the book is simply our broken food system and the need for food system reform.

Food production in the 21st century is facing multiple challenges: it has to produce more nutritious food to feed a growing population amidst the increasing scarcity of resources, adapt to climate change, and in turn reduce its impact on climate change.

Recently there has been an increased awareness on food sourcing and production, especially in urban local communities. What are your thoughts on food sustainability in Malaysia?

Like most food chains around the world, the food supply chain in Malaysia is still incredibly resourceintensive and carbon-emissions heavy. Food travels thousands of miles through carbon-heavy freight to get to us. Especially because Malaysians overwhelmingly value foreign produce (e.g. Australian Rockmelon), the demand for these foreign goods driving supply is part of the problem. There isn’t a culture of “buy local” and I think that inhibits the ability of Malaysians to have a more personal relationship with food and to support sustainable agricultural practices.

I urge the public to be more aware of the decisions they make regarding the food they buy and consume to contribute to a more sustainable food system.

Rarely do we stop and think about where our food comes from, who produced it, how they produced it or how it got to you. That’s why it’s really important for me to get more people talking about the pressing issues in our global food system.

Absolutely, planning for a sustainable future needs to start now. Tell us more about your exciting current projects.

I am currently organising the Cornell Future Food Summit, an unconventional, first-of-its-kind summit and platform at Cornell University that aims to empower and connect food fighters to build a sustainable, innovative, and connected food system.

The Summit’s theme is “Cultivating CommunityCentered Innovation” and is about bringing together diverse stakeholders to drive robust conversations and impact in our food system. I’m also promoting my book, “Hungry For Disruption: How Tech Innovations Will Nourish 10 Billion by 2050” on the side and I occasionally mentor and help startups and investors in the space.

So what does the future hold for you now?

In the future, I hope to do work that simply puts me in a position to help build and support a more sustainable, inclusive, and connected food system.

I wish to continue advocating and expanding the conversations and impacts of exciting innovations in food and be an ecosystem builder and community organiser that supports more cross-collaboration in our food system. I have hope that the future of nourishing the world is a sustainable, inclusive, and delicious one.

#BeRemarkable Sustainability Campaign was launched on 2nd November 2019 during the Eco-Community Day at the Secondary Campus in Equine Park. The campaign signified the start of our journey of environmental stewardship to build a sustainable future through its strategic intents, education programmes and actions in nine eco-core areas of Nature and Biodiversity, Climate Change, Energy, Healthy Living, Transport, Waste & Litter, Water, Global Citizenship and Our Eco-Culture.

These eco-themes are linked to the UN Sustainable Development Goals and are developed through four pillars in school.

The campaign also kickstarted the November Giving of our Foundation. Funds are raised from the Green Thumb Project to support the Foundation’s community area of funding. It also launched our Inter-school Community Project with SMK Seri Kembangan, a local secondary government school arranged through the partnership with PINTAR Foundation. We also unveiled our new fabric and e-waste recycling bins.

The campaign was well supported by fifteen eco-partners in Malaysia with talks, workshops and exhibitions held. The day also included a Green Generation Talk presented by a panel of eco-champions comprises of our alumni YAM Tengku Zatashah and Baida Hercus; the Deputy British High Commissioner to Malaysia Mr. David Thomas and our eco-partners- Kloth Cares and Biji-biji Initiative. Our sustainability journey continues with workshops, talks, training and activities in school. Procurements are now focused on the use of environmental friendly materials. More recycling bins, eWaste and fabric recycling bins are available in school. New building projects are designed to be eco-friendly, use of solar panels is increased and rain water is collected for plant watering. The Give Life Project has also created higher environmental and philanthropy awareness among students with some Year 6 students helping to raise funds as part of their Year 6 Challenge. The students have also conducted environmental reviews and developed impactful action plans. With just only five months into the campaign, the impact of our sustainability journey is now evident.

FOUNDATION Charity Dinner 2020 Thanks to the generosity of our donors, we raised over RM94,000 to support the community!

What a remarkable evening we had on 28th February at the Grand Hyatt, Kuala Lumpur! We had the highest guest attendance recorded since inception with over 300 guests at the dinner and all places were taken up before the event. Hosted by our secondary students, this event has been repeatedly praised as being one of the highlights of the school year. It was made special by our students waiting tables, serving dinner, putting up exceptional performances and raising funds for the charitable work they will undertake later this year.

The giving and support of the community have helped us raise over RM 94,000 this year very close to our aspirational target of RM 100,000. This is the highest amount raised over the years. The school and the Foundation are focused on creating a sustainable future for our children, the environment and the community. The funds raised will go directly towards the resources and materials for student service work this year and to support the Foundation’s community area of funding. This helps to renovate and provide resources for underfunded schools our students volunteer at, as well as fund a range of wildlife and environmental conservation projects.

Our alumni students, parents, staff, and friends from across the globe attended the various celebrations throughout the year culminating in a glittering and glitzy Platinum Gala Ball held in November.

KLASSics Former Staff Get-together On 17th January 2020, we had a lovely reunion for our former non-teaching staff at the Secondary Campus in Equine Park. These colleagues started their journey at the Alice Smith School from the early years when the Secondary Campus first started back in 1998. As we took them on a tour, they were impressed with the massive change and development. They were delighted to have met some of the current teachers and staff who are still with the school from the early 2000s.

Reminiscing Stories of Past Jardine Jamieson’s Memories Alumnus 1949 - 1950

Singing “Frère Jacques” while sitting in a circle on the floor of the Masonic Hall in Damansara Road is the strongest memory I have of The Alice Smith School in KL. My school reports and class photos from 1949 and 1950 show I was in the classes of Mrs Muir, Mrs Mary Whiteford and Mrs M Jackson. My report from August, 1950 is also signed by Mrs Lilly, the Principal.

JOURNALS Kay (Katherine), my younger sister attended the Jalan Bellamy campus for four or so years until mid-1959. My education continued from nine years of age as a boarder at Scotch College, Perth, Western Australia, travelling annually with a large number of other students to and from Singapore by the Blue Funnel Line’s Schoolships, “MV Gorgon” and “MV Charon.”

In 1963, I graduated as a primary school teacher in Western Australia. I served in teaching and administrative roles in a number of metropolitan and rural schools throughout the state.

One of my students in the 70s was Greg Carpenter who through his later extensive career as a handicapper in the horse racing industry worked for a time in Malaysia. His children attended the Alice Smith School and he was appointed a governor on the school’s council.

My sister and I had the opportunity to visit KL and our old school in 2000. Greg generously acted as our guide, visiting both campuses and the Eaton Road house where the school had started. Kay and I enjoyed visiting a primary class and an assembly to share our memories of our times at the school. Greg had also researched some of the history of the school and to our pleasant surprise we found that fifty years earlier our father Mr James Jamieson had been a signatory to the school’s 1950 Articles of Association. (His name had the “i” missing on the document but our address was correct.) Our father was also staunch Mason in a number of Masonic lodges in Malaya so may have been instrumental in the school’s move to Damansara Road.

I have fond memories of my time at the school seventy years ago, our visit in 2000 and enjoy reading of the school’s continued progress in the KLASSics Chronicle. My hope is that all current and future students and the staff value the experience of being associated with a school so fortuitously started in 1946, just after World War II, by Alice Smith in her Eaton Road house.

Recollection of KLASS and Me At Alice Smith, staff are one of the important pillars of our school community. Our staff go the extra mile to enhance and enrich the lives and learning of our students.

Each staff demonstrates a strong commitment to the wellbeing of our students and shows support towards the development of the school.

In this issue of Nostalgia, we share the story of Mrs Whittington, a very loved and admired teacher who is still teaching at Alice Smith since the early 2000s!

How long have you taught in Alice Smith?

Technically, I started teaching in September 2006 but enjoyed being a class helper in 2005.

What inspired you to teach and choose Alice Smith?

A series of “coincidences” led me to become a teacher (if you really want to know you will have to ask me when you’ve got plenty of time to spare!) and initially I was going to train as a Junior school teacher. I chose to teach at KLASS because my kids were there and I applied as a cover teacher initially.

What would the students be surprised to find out about you?

I remember watching the moon landing on a black and white TV.

Assistant Head of Mathematics Secondary Campus, Equine Park Tell us about yourself and what you teach at Alice Smith?

I graduated as an Electrical Engineer from Aberdeen University and worked for an offshore contractor before joining the Central Electricity Generating Board in England, where I worked on the design of nuclear power stations. I decided to change career and taught myself to programme in “C+”. I was recruited to work in a UK government establishment to “Q” section (seriously!). For followers of James Bond – you’ll get the reference!

I am still covered by the Official Secrets Act. My third career was as a mother of two (both who attended KLASS for their Senior School years.) Teaching Maths was my fourth career.

If you won the lottery and decided to give up teaching, what would you do instead?

First of all I would be hugely surprised as I don’t think I’ve ever bought a lottery ticket – the odds are too high against winning!

However, my husband says that if I won the lottery, I could travel around the world as his golf caddy! Probably another reason why not to buy a lottery ticket!

What makes a ‘good day’ at school?

The students – there’s always at least one who makes me laugh.

What sort of morning routine do you have to get jazzed for class?

I’m usually in the swimming pool about 6am to do 1km backstroke, because I can’t do front crawl. My husband calls it assisted drifting.

It doesn’t exactly jazz me for class but I get at least 50 minutes of peace with my thoughts as I look into the night sky and pray for the day.

In which other teacher’s class would you like to enroll, even for a day? Why? It would have to be in Madame Wong’s class as I would like to practise my French, as she comes into my class to practise Maths and the kids love it!

What current trends (among students) are baffling to you? Why? I never quite understood “dabbing”, and I was convinced it would die a death quickly but students seemed loath to stop doing it!

If you could pass on any wisdom to your students, what would you share?

If you want to be happy, do something that you are both good and passionate about, otherwise you will dislike Sunday evenings!

In Memory of

Ji Hoon Sherk

A tribute by our Head of School, Roger Schultz Ji Hoon was Deputy Headboy at Alice Smith in 2012 - 2013, the same year as Alison Nadarajah’s son, Ellery, was Headboy and Kayla Chiew was Headgirl.

He attended Alice Smith for his schooling from start to finish, from 2000 to 2013, graduating in the KLASS Class of 2013. He went on to study and complete a Bachelor of Science Degree at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in 2017. He was working as a consultant for Technology Development Recruitment in Hong Kong at the time of his death. He would have been 24 years old.

I remember Ji Hoon with great affection from when I first got to know him as Secondary Principal in 2010.

I will never forget his quite cheeky smile, perhaps a smirk you would call it with a sense of humour to match.

Ji Hoon was an incredibly popular and inspirational student during his time at Alice Smith. A motivated and determined but quiet achiever, he attained highly in his academic studies and he was also an exceptional swimmer and very talented musician. He was a tremendous role model to others, young and old, and his friendly, outgoing character endeared him to many. He was held in high esteem by the staff and his peers and he was looked up to by the younger students.

Ji Hoon was an excellent head student, a positive, enthusiastic and engaging force in the senior student body and our school community benefited from the qualities, commitment and energy he contributed to the betterment of our school.

Our world has lost a rising star and is a lesser place without Ji Hoon.
