founder...

Alice Fairfield-Smith

Founder, Alice Fairfield-Smith, was born on 4th July 1905 as Alice Pierce Johnston in Santa Cruz, California. She passed away in December 1992 after a short illness, leaving behind her two children, Hugh and Lindsey.

Her son, Hugh, has three sons: Cameron (with one daughter and two sons); Hilton (one son and one daughter) and Andrew (one son and two daughters). Lindsey, on the other hand, pursued a career.

The Alice Smith School was started in 1946 by Alice Fairfield-Smith at her home in Jalan Eaton, Kuala Lumpur, at the end of the Second World War. A biology graduate from Harvard University and an experienced teacher, Alice Smith had only a handful of expatriate students then, including her own daughter, Lindsey.

When Alice left for America in 1950 with her husband and daughter, the school was officially named The Alice Smith School and passed into the capable hands of Anne Lilley. The Alice Smith Schools Association

was formed, placing the responsibility for the administration of the school in the hands of a Council of Governors.

Today, The Alice Smith School is owned by the Alice Smith Schools Association (ASSA), a not-for-profit educational foundation registered in Malaysia.

In the

beginning...

Extract from a fictional reconstruction of Alice Smith’s diary as compiled by some of the pupils October 1946 You wouldn’t believe what happened today! Dr Baptist and Dr Pidford, my husband’s colleagues, insisted that I tutor their two children just to keep their skills sharp until the two schools at Cameron Highlands and Tanglin reopen. I was a little wary but my love for children outweighed my objections. I’m taking no salary and have agreed to start in November.

1st November 1946 It is exhausting to teach the children because of their differing abilities.

For example, Susan (7), has learnt to read, but Brian (5), has not. But the effort paid off as they responded to the teaching, so I have hopes.

2nd November 1946 Pleasant surprise today: I acquired another two pupils! The Leach children. Another day of good progress.

January 1947 For the New Year, a new teacher - and has had some experience. She will teach the younger children whilst I take the older children. I have the feeling that my ‘temporary’ class has now become something more permanent, mostly due to word of mouth. Recently, I had to register the school with the Department of Education. Being unprepared, I did not have a suitable name for the school when I filled in the form, so I followed the official method of naming schools – we are now officially EATON ROAD SCHOOL!

February 1947 I can’t but pity poor Hugh. The school’s been so successful that it’s taking up all the space we can find, including the dining room, which means he can’t eat until the tables have been cleared!

December 1947 The school now contains quite a few children – so many that I can only remember some of their names here: the two Broomes, Peter & Penny Emery and Margaret Dunne. And we also have our first two local pupils: Ronald and Lionel Khoo.

August 1948 We have moved into the bigger wooden house next door and the school is occupying the whole of the ground floor including the porch and the garage (surrendered rather reluctantly by Hugh!)

January 1949 What a month! It started with the RRI (Rubber Research Institute) wanting to turn the lower floor of our house into bachelors’ quarters!

This would have closed the school, if it hadn’t been for the help of the parents who persuaded the Governors of the Masonic Lodge to rent the ground floor of their hall to us. We have had to raise the fees again, but we have increased the range of activities, and introduced French into the curriculum.

February 1950 Tomorrow I leave for a new life in America with Hugh. After three year’s hard work, I can now reflect on what I have accomplished here. I think the things worth cherishing in my heart are the smiles of the children when they understand a lesson. And the proudest moment of my life: when they renamed the school “The Alice Smith School”! I leave it in the capable hands of Mrs Anne Lilley and the Board of Governors. They will have the task of establishing a permanent site for the school as I prepare for a long well-earned rest!

The Alice Smith School was and is a great school. My mother’s philosophy from the beginning was: “It should be fun” and “We will not exclude non-Europeans”.

As I recall mother’s account, she had no intention of starting a school. They were living in a kampung in Ampang Road.

Other families who had their kids with them basically said “These are kids and you are a teacher”. The school started in a small house on Eaton Road. The school rapidly became too big for the one spare room in the “small house” and we moved into the “big house” on Eaton Road. The school took the whole ground floor (three large rooms) and we lived upstairs. Later in 1949, the school had outgrown the big house and the school moved to the Masonic Hall.

I was stunned when I visited in 1995, by the houses remaining exactly as I remembered but with the two towers in the background soaring above the trees.

“We had just arrived from England after the war. We had managed to secure a passage on a boat which was carrying BMA Forces back to Malaya and we landed in 1946 at Singapore. I was ten years old at the time and had already begun school in England in a place called Baldock in Herefordshire. Shortly after our arrival here, I was sent to the Alice Smith School which had just started up. I was the first Malaysian pupil and was joined a couple of years later by my younger brother Lionel. Other pupils at the time were Olivia May-Clark, the Allen sisters, Elizabeth Lancaster, Michael Regester and Katharine Villiers”.

“My father was Comptroller of the Royal Household of the Sultan of Selangor and his ‘office’ was in Klang. We lived at No 11 Jalan Pantai in PJ, and there was only one small section of the Federal Highway in existence back then.

We had a Burmese cat called Professor Sooty Bintang Meow! I remember being very happy at school - there was discipline and structure but lots of affection as well. When school finished, we used to sit outside the Bellamy Road building and wait for the driver to come into the grounds and collect us. Outward Bound trips were quite different to those today, but we used to go bird-watching up at Fraser’s Hill at weekends. Then in the summer holidays, we used to go on visits to tea estates, tin mines and local factories my mother was quite involved in organising these. Another major occasion was the visit by the founder of our school, Alice Fairfield-Smith. One of the biggest treats I recall, however, was going to Sungai Besi Airport to watch the Thai Airways Caravelle jet land - it even had a parachute!”

Rosemary Duckworth was born in Durban, South Africa in 1942, and was one of the earliest Alice Smith pupils. Her mother, Margaret, became one of the first teachers at Alice Smith, joining in 1947. She taught gymnastics, games and dancing.

Commissioner for Labour and later the Member for Social and Industrial Relations in the Federal Executive Council. He later served as the last 1

British Advisor to Selangor, from 1954 to 1956.

They lived at The Residency, now the Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Memorial.

“A very special happening in the history of the school was the day, in April 1981 when our Founder paid us a visit. This milestone was even more memorable because it was totally unexpected! Alice Smith spent the morning walking around the school, most of which she had never seen before. The children could not believe that they were meeting a lady who to them was truly a legend.

Alice departed feeling very, very happy at the development and progress of her school from what she called ‘such small beginnings’. And what an honour it was for us to have met her!”

I was appointed as Principal a year later. I was quick to learn of the excellent reputation the school enjoyed in both the expatriate and local communities. The school has undergone enormous changes over the past years, but some things have remained constant: The Alice Smith School has an undisputed reputation in every aspect of education, and although the number of international schools has mushroomed over the intervening years, Alice Smith continues to be the school of choice for the majority”.

“While change is a natural element of development and growth, it was obvious from the start that there was one thing that should never change. Something that needed to be nurtured and preserved at all costs; the superb ethos of the school and the quality of the relationships between pupils and staff. It was a privilege to see such intelligent children grow into articulate, confident and caring young adults. The teachers, of course, led their development, some highly experienced and some young, both local and overseas, they inspired high standards and were energetic and enthusiastic.

I also remember the generosity of the parents’ response to the ‘new school’ project, despite the fact that some of their children would never benefit from its facilities or opportunities. Working with the ‘new school’ committees and architects on the development of the Taman Equine site was a ‘three year’ highlight of my Alice Smith experience, both challenging and exciting”.

Growing in strength...

Over the course of the years, the Alice Smith School grew rapidly from its original small start in Jalan Eaton, to the Masonic Hall in Jalan Damansara in 1949, to Weld Road in 1951 and, finally, to its present 1

building in Jalan Bellamy in May 1955.

In August 1960, Alice Smith visited the school and was delighted to see its growth. When she left Malaya in 1950 after running the school for four years, there were only 70 pupils and seven teachers. Returning on a sentimental journey, she was astonished to learn that enrolment had topped 250!

“This year, we have reached a milestone in the history of our school. Albeit, James is a very small milestone at only three and a half years old! But he is our first ‘second generation child’ and his entry into Nursery gives us a feeling of being a truly established school with a tradition behind it and, we hope, a bright future ahead”.

The ‘milestone’ in question is James Chilton, son of Susie Chilton (née Fenner) one of the earliest pupils of the Alice Smith School (1948 - 1950).

Susie Chilton née Fenner: Pupil circa 1948-1950 “After the war ended, my mother and I travelled back to Malaya as soon as we could to rejoin my father. He was the Officer in Charge of Police District (OCPD) in Kuala Kubu Bahru but with the start of the Emergency, was recalled to a Special Branch in Kuala Lumpur. I was five years old and needed to go to school.

My mother had heard that Mrs Alice Fairfield-Smith was educating her daughter Lindsey and about five or six other children at home. I was sent to join the group which by then had moved to the slightly bigger premises of No 7 Eaton Road.

This house was to have special significance later on because my husband proposed marriage to me there in 1961! He and two friends had rented the house from the Rubber Research Institute.

After the school moved to the Masonic Hall, which was known as the Rumah Hantu (!), new teachers were appointed to take four separate classes. My mother volunteered to do the accounts and send out the termly bills to parents. Mrs Jackson was my new class teacher and I adored her. For five year olds, lessons were fun and very relaxed, but the following year I went up a class and we had to take the business of learning a little more seriously. This was when I decided on a course of action which resulted in a little lesson that has stayed with me ever since.

One day, having made sure that Mrs Smith’s car was in the drive to take me home, I put my head on the desk and tried to look sick. My teacher, Mrs Muir, enquired what was wrong and I said, “I’ve got a sort of headache which is giving me a tummy ache,” and was sent off to see Mrs Smith. She sympathised and said she would drive me home. Hurrah! My plan was working.

After having spoken to my mother, Alice appeared and said, “Susie, I must tell you about the two little frogs who fell into a barrel of cream. One was very lazy and he sank to the bottom and drowned. The other was very busy and brave and kicked as hard as he could until the cream turned to butter. He jumped out and was saved”. Then she looked me in the eye and said in a gentle voice, “Well Susie, which little frog are you?” After a moment, I decided that I would go back to school and start behaving like a brave little frog!

I loved my happy times at Alice Smith; certainly enough to send our son James there in 1967 when he was aged 3, to become the first of Alice’s second generation pupils”.

Origins of the house colours...

When Mrs Patricia Lee first arrived as Principal, the houses were just colours without names. To add a bit more interest and to act as a tribute to the faithful Alice Smithians, she decided to name the houses.

The establishment of the houses was to bring the children of all ages together in an effort to give their best academically and physically. This system was and is a great success.

FAIRFIELD - BLUE This was named after Mrs Alice Fairfield (Smith), the founder of the school in 1946. She was also responsible for the establishment of the Alice Smith School

until

her

departure

from

Malaya in 1950.

MUIR - YELLOW Mrs Doris Muir was Headmistress from 1951 to 1959. Mrs Muir was an Australian who joined Alice Smith first as a teacher in 1948. During her time at the school, she progressed from teaching 12 students to become the head teacher.

FLEMING - RED Mrs Muir’s successors were Mrs Ella Whitmore and Mrs Denise Fleming.

Both were Principals at the school from 1959 to 1964. It was in 1964 that Mrs Patricia Lee succeeded Mrs Fleming.

Three decades of progress

1970s to 1990s...

Under the leadership of Headmistress Patricia Lee, the Preparatory building for older students was opened in January 1971. By the end of the year, more classes were being added. Patricia Lee was Principal for 25 years between 1964 to 1989.

The Primary Campus gym was named, ‘The Wilkinson Gym’ until 2008.

From 1982, under Mr Wilkinson’s consistently active encouragement, the school continued to flourish and grow in numbers, exceeding 350 students during the 1980s.

In 1996, when the Alice Smith School had been in existence for an entire half a century, planning for the new Secondary Campus at Equine Park was well underway.

The 50th Golden Anniversary celebration took place in May that year in the knowledge that very soon a new era of Alice Smith was about to begin.

millennium...

As the world entered a new millennium in 2000, the Alice Smith School continued to go from strength to strength. The first cohort of Sixth Form students graduated that year; a very proud moment for the school and the students themselves.

In February 2004, the new library and Sixth Form Centre were officially opened at the Secondary Campus.

A glittering Diamond Jubilee Ball took place in 2006 in conjunction with the school’s 60th anniversary celebrations.

In 2010, a new milestone was achieved with the opening of a RM3.2 million four storey gym at the Primary Campus. The new gym was named ‘The Smurthwaite Gym’ after John Smurthwaite, parent and Governor who has a great passion for sports.

The design of the Jubilee Centre for parents at the Primary Campus was awarded GOLD at the Malaysian Architecture Malaysia (PAM) Awards 2015. In June 2016, the centre was officially opened by HRH The Duke of York Prince Andrew.

Scholarships 17th January 2011... It was a joyous celebration at the Alice Smith School as four Malaysian students

received

their

inaugural

full

scholarship amounting to more than half a million ringgit enabling them to pursue their A Level studies.

SPM/GCSE students who were enrolled into the Secondary Campus.

To date through its scholarship programme, the Alice Smith School has helped to support over twenty young Malaysians to pursue their ambitions for higher education and future careers.

Founder’s Day Thursday, 4th July 2013 was a fitting moment in our history, to celebrate the school’s first Founder’s Day; a day to reflect on and understand the unique story of how the school began. This day also marks the birth of our school’s founder, Alice Smith on 4th July 1905.

In September 2016, the Secondary Campus Sports Complex officially opened with a world class 8-lane synthetic athletic running track conforming to the standard of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), a natural turf football field, a 5-a-side hockey field and a versatile multi-sport playing area accommodating three futsal fields, netball and tennis courts.

The Alice Smith School is the first international school in Malaysia and the third in the world to receive this IAAF certification. In addition, for compliance with the International Hockey Federation (FIH) standards, the school is also one of the first in the world to gain this level of certification for its new artificial 5-a-side hockey turf field.

These are major investments for the school and the importance placed on meeting the highest standards for all levels of play from elite level competition to community development, has not been overlooked.

“My closest friends are still guys from Alice Smith. I have great memories.

I wasn’t the best student. I remember being stood outside, thrown out of the class many times. Once we were told to stand on our desk, outside the classroom for about 5 hours in Prep 2, I think. And I loved the sports. It was amazing how so much sport was played on one pitch…Rugby, hockey, rounders, football and we had really great times, probably some of my finest times. What I remember the most was trying to eat lunch as quickly as possible to play football at lunch break. And then at the end of class there were sports activities after that. Good friends, good times and good education as well”.

“Alice Smith was a fantastic 2.5 years I had. I joined in November 1977, the interim between a local school and going to boarding school in the UK. It was quite a shock to the system to go from a local school to Alice Smith. I remember on day one, I walked into class and the teacher asked a question. It was a YES/NO question, and I remember I had it down to a tee. I kinda stood up and said, “Yes Sir” and then I sat down again. The whole class burst out laughing. Obviously, it was much less formal at Alice Smith. And of course, it was about the diversity of the friends I could make and, most importantly, it was about going to school with girls for the first time...and that was fantastic! The sports and Conrad Arief made Alice Smith a few of the best years of my life”.

“When I entered Alice Smith in Year 7, it exposed me to more creativity. It gave me opportunities to raise my opinion, share ideas and think out of the box. I got to mix with different nationalities at Alice Smith, which help me to understand about different cultures.

I have many good memories. One memory that I can recall was a year end appreciation and celebration assembly that our Head of Year, Mr Jeremy Wyre held. He awarded each of us a mini award about who we were and the role we played in the year group. I think he even had our parents send some childhood photos in and then gave out awards like “The funniest” or “Most creative” person in the year group. Even though everyone got an award and it wasn’t a prestigious award, I thought it was great at making everyone feel part of the year group in their own unique way”.
