Reducing Tree Wind Damage WINDSTORMS can cause unprecedented damage to structures, utilities, and landscapes. Assess-

ing why certain trees are damaged while others survived is a worthwhile endeavor; not only to protect the aesthetics of the trees, but also the property around them.

Numerous studies indicate proper tree maintenance is crucial to reducing damage during very high winds. But although we love our trees, most of us are experiencing budgeting issues and tree pruning or investing in quality tree pruning is often not at the top of our priority list.

Here are some issues that can make your trees susceptible to wind damage and how to prevent it. Some are common sense and other more technical. Damage may be caused by one or a combination of factors (not all listed here).

Wrong Tree in the Wrong Place For most of us it is too late. We have large trees planted long ago in a small space, or a heavy rooting tree next to concrete, etc. Certain trees are more susceptible to wind damage. How we deal with maintaining the “wrong tree” is important and all the following issues become more critical.

Balance, structure, and trunk taper contribute to helping healthy trees be resilient to winds. To maintain resilient trunks, at least one-half of the foliage should be in the lower two-thirds of the tree. The lowest limb should originate in the bottom one-third of the tree’s height.

City Council Corner WOW, what a year it has been so far! Despite

navigating the dark waters of COVID-19, I want you to know that your City continues to be hard at work for you.

I still believe that North Las Vegas is the best-kept secret in the nation. There are so many exciting opportunities and so much development happening here more than anywhere else!

Did you know that approximately 50 percent of our land is still available for development? This is a unique advantage in our landlocked valley.

Right now, the long awaited Apex waterline just completed its first phase!

Our team just finished constructing two pump stations, two 1.25 million gallon reservoirs and more than five miles of waterline. This is the biggest single economic driver for North Las Vegas in the City’s history. This has been the missing piece that our team has worked on for many years to fully open the door to developing thousands of acres of industrial land at Apex. Phase 2 is in the final planning approval stage. We anticipate 24 months for construction.

We are very excited to see this public-private-partnership coming online.

Overall, the project represents an investment of more than $54 million by the City to diversify our economy.

The construction and subsequent development of the Apex Industrial Park will create countless jobs and diversify the entire region’s economy and our tax base, making us less dependent on the boom-and-bust gaming, hospitality and tourism industry.

I am also ecstatic to announce that our large vacant piece of land just across Pecos to the west of the VA, also known as our 150-acre job creation zone -- will be up for bid in the following weeks. Since it is next to the VA Hospital, our focus will be on a wide range of medical services centered around a new hospital, including biotechnology research firms, and related services that will bring thousands of jobs and many new residents. We would also like to see a hotel, restaurants and much more as part of the development. What we are creating is a region within our city that will allow people to work, play and live in close proximity to a wonderful lifestyle and environment.

This will be the heart of our new Innovation District that will span from the Deer Springs District to the Speedway and complement the VA Hospital and future UNLV campus and bring additional jobs, capital investment and lifestyle amenities to our city.

In other more exciting news, our new Restaurant Row on Craig Road is booming! Aside from Restaurant Row staples -- Southern Nevada’s first Texas Roadhouse, Red Lobster and Cafe Rio – we have more restaurants coming next year! Pretty soon, you’ll be able to take your family to dine at Juan’s Flaming Fajitas, Panera, BJ’s Brewhouse, Fly Pie Pizza, Chili’s and even Olive Garden!

•On Saturday June 5th the median across from the Aliante ER was trimmed, maintenance on that specific median is done on a weekend for two reasons.

– There’s less vehicle traffic on Aliante Pkwy on a Saturday morning.

– Safety for everyone, drivers as well as our employees.

•During the month of June, we started the removal of the Red Yucca stalks.

– Red Yuccas produce several flower stalks each year that bloom in early Spring. These stalks can be between 3 to 5 ft. in height, it is best to remove the stalks after they are done flowering.

•Fertilized all turf on property with BEST 15-15-15 fertilizer, to maintain the turf green with less water usage.

•We also applied Organic Pest control to reduce grubs in the soil, this procedure was done mainly on the Aliante monument areas like Aliante Pkwy & Centennial. Aliante Pkwy and Aviary Way, & Decatur and Deer Springs.

•In some of the medians around the property we used growth regulator (EMBARK) to slow down the growth & maintain a manicured look on plants that have been recently trimmed, this is done to keep the “Line of Sight” for the safety of pedestrians and drivers.

•From July 2nd. To July 12th maintenance on Elkhorn from Aviary to Aliante Parkway was performed, and also maintenance on Aliante Pkwy from the 215 beltway to Grand Teton.

•From July 13th to July 20th. Maintenance on Deer Springs N., Rome St., Valley Dr. Dorrel, Decatur, and Citril Finch was performed.

•The maintenance that was performed includes the following: – R egular irrigation checks on the turf as well as the drip.

– R emoving any and all broken tree branches – R aising the trees that have low hanging branches.

– S elective trimming of overgrown plants.

– U sing our blowers to clean up debris, including spider webs that collect on the planter walls.

– T rash pick-up on walking trails and Common areas throughout Aliante.

– C ollection of shopping carts.

•We will continue to service Doggie Stations 3 days a week for the remaining of summer, Thursday, Friday & Sunday.

•We will also continue to service the community 7 days a week. A 4 men crew will be on site on the weekends to collect trash, remove shopping carts, do irrigation checks or any other maintenance service that is necessary.

When To Water - Fall Guidelines MANDATORY WATERING

Watering on a day other than your assigned watering day is considered water waste and may result in a fee.

Watering tips: Water between midnight and sunrise from May to October to minimize water lost to evaporation. Water during the warmer part of the day during winter months to prevent water from freezing on your landscape.

Monitor how many minutes you can run your sprinkler system before water starts to run off the property. Stop the run cycle at that point. Allow the water to be fully absorbed before beginning the next cycle.

Aerate your lawn. Aeration pulls tiny pulls from the soil, allowing water to be absorbed.

Warm-season grasses, such as Bermuda, require about one-third less water.

If you have rotating sprinklers, water for 12 minutes each watering, rather than 4 minutes.

Don’t water when it’s windy or rainy.

Water your lawn on a separate schedule from your plants, trees and shrubs.

Test, adjust and repair your sprinkler heads and drip emitters weekly in the summer and monthly in the winter.
