Vail’s 35th Music Festival still echoing, We are reflecting on the exceptional artists, inspirational moments, and beautiful music created at the Festival this summer. Bravo! Vail is consistently cited as one of the top classical music festivals in the world, and this year’s Festival reinforced that distinction.

This level of artistic excellence does not occur in a bubble, but rather within a community that supports, appreciates, and contributes to its success. We are inspired by our community that came together to enjoy great music, rain or shine; our community that through its generosity enabled the very best orchestras and musicians to perform in the Vail Valley; and a community that worked tirelessly behind the scenes to make sure more than 70 performances were presented seamlessly over six weeks.

THE SAINT PAUL CHAMBER ORCHESTRA Renowned for its artistic excellence, remarkable versatility, and adventurous programming, The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra is widely regarded as one of the finest chamber orchestras in the world.

Highlights •

Bravo! Vail was proud to open the 2022 season with the return of this vibrant ensemble.

Acclaimed violinist Stefan Jackiw made his Bravo! Vail debut performing a new arrangement of Beethoven’s Kreutzer Sonata with the Orchestra.

•

Double-bassist and composer Xavier Foley and The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra violinist Eunice Kim made their Bravo! Vail debuts in Foley’s For Justice and Peace and Bottesini’s Grand Duo Concertante for Violin, Bass, and Orchestra, with the ensemble.

•

World premiere: onemovement piano concerto

by Chris Rogerson, performed by AnneMarie McDermott and The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra. This concerto was commissioned by Bravo!

Vail in honor of McDermott’s 10th anniversary as artistic director and is a Symphonic Commissioning Project work.

DALLAS SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA Bravo! Vail was thrilled to welcome the return of the endlessly inventive Dallas Symphony Orchestra, with Music Director Fabio Luisi.

Highlights •

World Premiere: a co-commissioned work

by Katherine Balch entitled music for young water that danced beneath my feet, performed by the Dallas Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Fabio Luisi, as part of the New Works Symphonic Commissioning Project.

•

Maestro Fabio led the Dallas Symphony Orchestra in Beethoven’s beloved Symphony No. 9, Choral featuring the Bravo! Vail Festival Chorus, Colorado Symphony Chorus, and vocalists Maureen McKay, Siena Licht Miller, Issachah Savage, and Ryan Speedo Green, with chorus director Duain Wolfe.

•

The Orchestra showcased the music of legendary artists Marvin Gaye, Jackie Wilson, James Brown, Otis Redding, The Temptations, Al Green, Barry White, Smokey Robinson, and Curtis Mayfield in an evening of soulful rhythms and melodies, led by Jeff Tyzik.

THE PHILADELPHIA ORCHESTRA The “Fabulous Philadelphians’” distinctive sound and legacy of ingenuity were on full display with six powerfully diverse programs.

Danish violinist and Bravo!

Vail Artist in Residence Nikolaj Szeps-Znaider performs Sibelius’s haunting Violin Concerto alongside Strauss’ autobiographical Ein Heldenleben (“A Hero’s Life”) and Carlos Simon’s Fate Now Conquers, conducted

by Denève.

The Stutzmann-led Philadelphia Orchestra opened its final Festival program with Copland’s renowned Fanfare for a Common Man, in a program that included Bruch’s Double Concerto for Clarinet, Viola, and Orchestra featuring its own principal clarinetist Ricardo Morales and principal violist Choong-Jin

Chang, alongside Brahms’s masterwork Symphony No. 4.

•

The Orchestra paid homage to Rachmaninoff with his Symphony No. 3 in a program that included the Bravo! Vail premiere of Stacy Garrop’s Penelope Waits and Kirill Gerstein performing Liszt’s Piano Concerto No. 2.

•

The Orchestra performed Schubert’s monumental Symphony No. 9, The Great, led by Stutzmann, and Van Cliburn International Piano Competition gold medal winner Haochen Zhang performs Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 1.

NEW YORK PHILHARMONIC The grand finale of Bravo! Vail’s symphonic season showcased the enthralling brilliance of America’s first symphony orchestra.

Highlights •

Music Director Jaap van Zweden opened the Philharmonic residency with Mahler’s expansive Symphony No. 1 and SeongJin Cho in Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5, Emperor.

•

The Philharmonic performed the world premiere of a work by Carlos Simon led by van Zweden, coupled with Bartók’s groundbreaking Concerto for Orchestra and the Bravo! Vail debut of Bomsori Kim in Bruch’s Violin Concerto No. 1.

•

Bravo! Vail favorite Conrad Tao returned to perform Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 17, in a program that included the Bravo! Vail premiere of Nina Shekhar’s Lumina and Dvorak’s Symphony No. 7, led by van Zweden.

•

Bravo! Vail paid tribute to the late Bramwell Tovey in a dedicated program conducted by Leonard Slatkin who led the Philharmonic in a program of Tchaikovsky with the composer’s Symphony No. 5 and Variations on a Rococo Theme for Cello and Orchestra, featuring cellist Zlatomir Fung.

SMALL ENSEMBLES CHAMBER MUSIC SERIES Bravo! Vail’s Chamber Music Series returned to the Vilar Performing Arts Center in Beaver Creek for four performances by internationally celebrated chamber musicians and ensembles.

Znaider performed a special violin recital joined

by Bravo! Vail’s beloved Artistic Director Anne-Marie McDermott on piano.

The distinguished Verona Quartet paired with McDermott on Samuel Coleridge Taylor’s Piano Quintet in a program that also included Puccini’s Crisantemi and Beethoven’s String Quartet No. 1.

The Danish String Quartet returned to perform the Bravo! Vail premiere of Bent Sørensen’s Doppelgänger, Schubert’s Der Doppelgänger from Schwanengesang, and Schubert’s String Quartet No. 15.

EDUCATION & ENGAGEMENT PROGRAMS COMMUNITY CONCERTS Throughout the Festival, Bravo! Vail offered more than 30 free concerts in the Eagle River Valley community, featuring emerging artists and musicians from visiting orchestras and ensembles.

Ten midday concerts at The Chapel at Beaver Creek featured Bravo! Vail’s 2022 Piano Fellows and Chamber Musicians in Residence.

Bravo! Vail’s Music Box took performers on the road to Arrowhead, Ford Park, EagleVail, Minturn, and Gypsum.

•

Over 1,500 individuals participated in our Community Concerts and Collaborations.

FAMILY CONCERTS

LITTLE LISTENERS @ THE LIBRARY Eight free programs held at four area libraries introduced musical concepts and instruments in an approachable, interactive way. Kids connected with Festival musicians, participated in games, and completed stages in the LL@L Game Board, inspiring a love of music through participation and a sense of achievement.

Bravo! Vail presented three Family Concerts throughout the Eagle River Valley, designed to engage young listeners and their families by introducing classical music in a fun, accessible way. The 2022 family concerts featured the Verona Quartet, performing programs inspired by a book called The Lost String Quartet.

COMMUNITY COLLABORATIONS Each year, constructive partnerships with communityserving organizations allow Bravo! Vail to share the joy and healing power of music. 2022 brought collaborations with musicians and live concerts with Roundup River Ranch, Vail Health, Walking Mountains Science Center, Castle Peak Senior Center, and Golden Eagle Senior Center.

MUSIC EDUCATION NIGHT The first 100 children ages 8 - 14 during the June 30 Symphonie Fantastique performance received an immersive backpack that included watercolor painting and creative writing kits, designed to enhance the musical experience.

YOUNG MUSICIANS DAY Music Makers Haciendo Música, Aspen Music Festival and School, and El Sistema Colorado collaborated in June on a special day intended to create meaningful connections and inspire musical curiosity, capped off by attending a performance of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra.

MUSIC MAKERS HACIENDO MÚSICA Bravo! Vail’s flagship schoolbased program gave 230 children the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of violin or piano, musical concepts, performance skills, and reading music in 45-minute classes throughout the academic year.

As a complement to afterschool programming, the Summer Intensive gives our students the opportunity to continue their music education during two, week-long summer camps, exploring additional genres of music, making music with friends, and exposure to our Festival guest artists.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PIANO FELLOWS AND CHAMBER MUSICIANS IN RESIDENCE Every season Bravo! Vail is proud to showcase outstanding chamber musicians and ensembles in the early stages of major professional careers, alongside two upand-coming pianists, selected by Artistic Director Anne-Marie McDermott. All these young artists benefit immeasurably by performing, teaching, and learning side by side with renowned Festival musicians.
