She had big hair, a big personality and an even bigger voice. But the late Dolly Parton’s biggest legacy is the impact she had on the world through her music and her philanthropy. While best known as a performer who sold over 100 million records, wrote 3000-plus songs and took home 11 Grammy Awards over a seven-decade career, the proud Tennessee country girl was also a true humanitarian. Her charitable initiatives included the flagship Dollywood Foundation, originally established to reduce school dropout rates, the Imagination Library, gifting free books to children (including 150,000 in Australia); My People Fund, providing relief to disaster victims; and the Eagle Mountain Sanctuary, to help injured bald eagles. She donated to causes including children’s and women’s health, COVID-19 research, and university scholarships. All the while singing her heart out about love and loss, poverty and perseverance, dreams and disappointments, faith and finding one’s way in the world. Dolly was an icon of the modern entertainment era – a star before artists like Kylie, Madonna and Taylor Swift became household names and her popularity endures beyond her final days. She turned her celebrity into lasting practical benefits for people in need. But you don’t need to be famous to “Do a Dolly” and leave your patch of the world a better place. Most communities have local heroes giving their time to sporting clubs, charities, schools, hospitals, service groups and other organisations, and whose influence remains decades later. They might not have the rhinestones, theme parks and hit songs like Dolly. But they have the same sense of generosity, persistence, optimism, loyalty to place and willingness to help out. In her song Coat of Many Colors, Dolly sang about true wealth coming from family love and care, not material possessions. Similarly, the richness of a community comes from the many contributions of its members, however small. Collectively, they can become something worth treasuring. Vale Dolly Parton.

Your ability to read the room will matter. You will know when to listen, when to challenge and when a firm position needs to be held. While the position has no direct reports, it carries considerable influence across Council. What you will bring You will have at least three years’ relevant Australian experience, although five or more years would be ideal, supported by qualifications in HR, WHS or a related discipline - however experience far out weighs the qualification! You will also bring strong WHS knowledge, experience managing complex workplace matters and the confidence to provide clear, defensible advice. Local government experience would be valuable, but it is not essential. Above all, you will be composed, credible and comfortable taking ownership. You won’t avoid a difficult conversation but you will always approach it with fairness, integrity and respect. If you know how to balance people, risk and organisational needs without losing sight of what is right, we would like to hear from you. How to apply
