Scams Awareness Week They knock on your door, infiltrate your email inbox and slide into your DMs. They call your phone, send you a text message or reach you by regular mail. They befriend you, gain your trust… and ultimately steal from you, usually before you realise anything is amiss. August 24-28 is Scams Awareness Week – a national campaign backed by federal government agencies to help Australians recognise the danger signs and avoid falling victim to the myriad of fraudulent schemes out there that are only growing in their sophistication. Last year, 200,675 scam reports were made to the National Anti-Scam Centre, resulting in financial losses totalling almost $335 million. Already in 2026, there have been nearly 109,000 reports that have swindled us out of $187 million. No one likes to admit that they’ve been conned. But part of the campaign strategy involves encouraging conversations to remove the stigma and help potential victims speak up sooner. Its theme ‘No one’s just a number’ emphasises that behind every scam report (like those mentioned above), is someone’s mum/dad, son/daughter, friend, neighbour, colleague. Smart people, vulnerable people, young people, old people, wealthy people, poor people. The ScamWatch website features real people – just like you and I – telling their personal stories throughout the week. We are urged to take three important steps to safeguard ourselves from this insidious crime: STOP before sharing any money or personal information; CHECK who you are dealing with using contact details you find independently; and PROTECT yourself and others by reporting scams to ScamWatch, your bank and cyber.gov.au. Councils can spread the word by sharing the STOP, CHECK PROTECT message in their local communities. Talk to your customers, share content from the ScamWatch stakeholder kit on social media channels, promote awareness via newsletters and other communications. Such is society these days that no one is fully out of reach, so we all need to stay vigilant. To learn more about different types of scams, the warning signs that should set off alarm bells, and what to do if you or someone you know falls victim, visit www.scamwatch.gov.au

Rangers Looking for a role where no two days are the same and the work you do genuinely matters? If you’re someone who can think on your feet, communicate confidently, stay calm when situations get difficult and wants to do work that has a real impact on your community, this could be the opportunity you’ve been looking for. Join our team as a Ranger and you will play a vital frontline role in protecting community safety, supporting responsible animal ownership and helping people understand and meet their responsibilities. Companion animal management is the key focus of the role, alongside responding to straying livestock, overgrown blocks, illegal dumping and other public safety and compliance matters. You’ll be out in the community representing Council and helping achieve better outcomes through a combination of education, communication, investigation and enforcement. You’ll investigate complaints, conduct inspections, provide education and advice, issue notices where required, maintain accurate records and prepare statements or evidence for legal proceedings. Importantly, this isn’t simply about issuing notices or enforcing rules - you’ll need to understand why the rules exist, interpret the relevant legislation and apply it fairly, consistently and professionally. Strong literacy, attention to detail, sound judgement and confident communication are essential, as is the ability to have difficult conversations and manage conflict respectfully. Experience handling livestock and confidently operating a 4WD will also be highly regarded. This can be a challenging role, so resilience is crucial. You may deal with people who are frustrated or distressed, attend confronting animal incidents or respond to emergencies outside normal hours. You’ll need to stay calm, professional and focused on achieving the best possible outcome. You won’t be doing it alone — you’ll join a resilient, supportive and helpful team that backs each other through the tough situations and works together to support our community. We’re looking for someone who brings that same attitude — someone who enjoys being part of a team, is willing to help others and understands that great community outcomes are a shared responsibility. Previous Ranger or regulatory experience will be highly regarded, but you don’t need to have done exactly this job before.
