Australia’s population is ageing and our workforce demographic reflects this change. With aged pension eligibility at 67, many people need to remain employed for longer financially, while others simply want to keep working well into their 60s. But it’s not always easy. Australia’s Age Discrimination Commissioner Robert Fitzgerald says workplaces must do more to accommodate the ageing workforce and prevent prejudices against older employees. Speaking on an episode of the Prime Time podcast, Mr Fitzgerald said many workers in their 50s and 60s were hitting a wall finding a job, staying in a job, or accessing greater flexibility. He pointed to research showing Australian employers now viewed staff aged 51-plus as “older workers” but few have entrenched policies for their multigenerational workplaces that are inclusive across all age groups. It starts with recruitment – Mr Fitzgerald said many AI programs filtered out CVs from older applicants because they used inputs based around a younger cohort. Internally, few employees want to do the same hours in the same job until they are 67, so adjustments to existing roles and classifications should be offered as part of general policy. Mr Fitzgerald said these conversations were rarely held because workers don’t want to appear past their prime, while employers don’t know what to say or what to offer. Embedding flexibility in a transition to retirement framework could make the issue as normal as discussing carer’s leave, maternity/paternity leave or working from home. Another barrier comes from biases many people don’t know they carry. Mr Fitzgerald said older people often think younger workers are disloyal, not committed, too entitled; younger workers view older colleagues as technological dinosaurs incapable of change. But workplaces that actively encourage cross-generational collaboration – eg. through mentorship, team-building and social activities – have been shown to increase productivity. With its diverse career profile, local government is in a perfect position to lead the way in this space. Remove age bias from recruitment, offer flexibility, have conversations and make it all part of organisational policies… and set the tone for others to follow. Inclusive multigenerational workplace resources are available online, including the Australian Human Rights Commission, the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations’ mature age hub and lobby group Generation Australia.
