The recent emergence of five generations in the workplace brings with it unusual obstacles together with exceptional possibilities.
Any workplace fortunate enough to celebrate staff milestones of four and five decades sees themselves in this very dynamic. None more so than the local government sector.
From the eras of traditionalists, baby boomers, Generation X, millennials to the latest workplace arrivals, Generation Z, all present unexpected challenges and surprising opportunities.
Communication styles for each generation have distinct interaction preferences. These can of course lead to potential misunderstandings. However, confusion can be avoided by seeking plain speaking clarification.
Differing attitudes toward work-life balance, loyalty, and performance expectations can create friction from the perspective of work value. Again, addressed via simple language around goals, responsibilities and obligations.
No surprises to anyone that technological adaptability and varying comfort levels with technology may hinder team collaboration. Bringing a growth mindset to this hurdle goes a big way to resolving this one, with that mindset not necessarily limited to any one generation either.
Celebrating diverse perspectives in a multi-generational workforce fosters innovative problemsolving by blending various viewpoints and experiences. In the case of local government this is something rate payers, resident’s, tenant’s, developers, customers, community groups and small business people can relate to.
Mentorship, I believe, is the single biggest opportunity available where experienced generations can guide younger employees. This has a fabulously reciprocal bonus scenario as well. Younger team members often introduce fresh ideas and ease the challenge of technological skills take up. A win both ways.
Embracing this relatively new phenomenon of generational diversity can lead to a more resilient, adaptable, and creative workplace that leverages the strengths of all generations.
What are your favourite tools and techniques for multi-generational workplaces?
