Five simple steps for remembering The Alfred in your Will
Talk to your solicitor
The easiest way to go about including a gift in your Will is to seek the advice of a solicitor. You may also consider using an online Will service.
Use this guide to record your wishes. Hand it to your adviser when you next visit them and let them know you would like to name The Alfred as a beneficiary in your Will. They can explore your preferences and make sure your generous wishes are properly carried out.
Decide on the type of gift you would like to leave
There is a range of ways you can choose to support The Alfred through a gift in your Will. For example, you might want to leave a specific gift of money, property, or shares, or you might like to establish a fund to donate in perpetuity.
Here is sample wording for the most common types of gift. Your solicitor or legal adviser can help you to adapt this wording to reflect your wishes.
OPTION 1: RESIDUAL
This gives the remainder of your Estate after first leaving gifts to your loved ones.
“I give, devise and bequeath, free of all duties and taxes, the residue of my entire estate to The Alfred (ABN 27 318 956 319) of 55 Commercial Road, Melbourne Victoria 3004, to be used for its general purposes, allowing The Alfred to use it wherever it is needed at the time it is received. The official receipt from The Alfred shall be sufficient discharge to my executor who shall not be bound to see its application.”
OPTION 2: PERCENTAGE
If you are considering more than one beneficiary, you may choose to give a percentage or a fraction of your Estate. This allows for the changing value of your Estate which can occur over time.
“I give, devise and bequeath, free of all duties and taxes, ______________________ % [the desired percentage] of my entire estate to The Alfred (ABN 27 318 956 319) of 55 Commercial Road, Melbourne Victoria 3004 to be used for its general purposes, allowing The Alfred to use it wherever it is needed at the time it is received. The official receipt from The Alfred shall be sufficient discharge to my executor who shall not be bound to see its application.”

Also consider how you would like your gift to be used
Due to the ever-changing needs of the hospital, general purpose gifts are preferred, wherever possible. If you wish to direct your gift towards general purposes, no further amendment is required. To direct your gift towards a specific area of work, refer to the sample wording below.
We recommend you discuss your choice of gift with The Alfred's Gifts in Wills Team and your solicitor or legal adviser. That way we can all be sure that your final wishes can be honoured.
“...to be used ideally for the purpose of ________________________________________ [add a brief description of the medical area or department]. However, if this ceases to exist or does not require ongoing funding at the time my gift is received, then it is to be used for general purposes for treatment and patient care at The Alfred.”
Talk to your family and loved ones
We recommend that you take some time to talk through your intentions with your family and loved ones, to ensure they fully understand your final wishes.
Keep your Will safe and secure
File your Will somewhere safe but easily accessible for your loved ones if they need to access it at a later date. Leaving a copy with a solicitor or trusted professional is also a good idea.
Remember to update your Will every few years to reflect your circumstances.
UPDATING YOUR WILL
If you've already made a Will and wish to update it or make minor changes, you may be able to add a Codicil - an addition to your existing Will. If it's a large change, you'll likely be required to write a new Will.
