Septet in E-flat major, Op. 20 Beethoven (1770-1827)
Ludwig van Beethoven stands today as one of the greatest artistic figures in our history. He stood on the shoulders of Haydn, Mozart and Bach, becoming the bedrock and launching pad for the explosion of creativity in the European romantic era. His music drew upon nature, poetry, visual artistry and the essence of what it meant to be a human. His gift was the ability to draw the listener into a world where colors are more vivid, emotions are felt more deeply, and life’s tragedies and joys hold more meaning. Beethoven created new forms by stretching the old ones until they were no longer recognizable to listeners of the day. He turned the staid minuet into the frenetic scherzo, added new instruments and voices to the traditional classical symphony and—in his Septet—took the serenade to new heights of expression. The Septet for Winds and Strings premiered in Vienna in 1800 and was dedicated to Maria Theresa. It contains all the trappings of a serenade, a form popularized by Mozart. But at the age of 30, Beethoven was beginning to exude confidence in his talent. He stepped outside the bounds of proper Viennese form, adding lengthy introductions to some movements as well as a violin cadenza, all of which came as a shock to his listeners of the day. Beethoven’s first symphony, composed at the same time as the Septet, is likewise full of surprises—many of them meant to poke fun at the expectations of his aristocratic patrons. Beethoven’s sense of humor surfaces in both works, with (at the time) unexpected turns of phrases, harmonies and dynamics. No doubt this is why the Septet became one of Beethoven’s most popular works and was arranged by Beethoven and others for various ensembles, including full orchestra.

Piazzolla (1921-1992) Argentinian musician Astor Piazzolla was responsible for the explosive growth in popularity of tango in the 20th century. Along with tenor Carlos Gardel (whom renowned Italian operatic tenor Enrico Caruso once called “the greatest singer in the world”), Piazzolla added a modern flair to the tango form, the roots of which reach back to the Spanish habanera. As a youngster living in NewYork City with his family, young Astor’s father made sure he was exposed to all forms of music, including popular, classical and jazz, all of which influenced Piazzolla’s tango playing and composing styles. Astor studied classical piano and Bach with a student of composer Sergei Rachmaninov and soaked in the flavor of the jazz scene, so vibrant in NYC. One day, purely by chance, Piazzolla’s father brought home a bandoneón— the accordion-like instrument with the distinctive sound associated with tango—after he happened to see it in a pawn shop in New York. The youngster took to it immediately; although Astor was just 13 years old, Carlos Gardel invited Astor to join his tango band on tour. Much to young Astor’s dismay, his father refused permission. But when Gardel and his entire band were killed in a fiery plane crash a few months later, Astor knew he was destined to take up the mantle of advocacy for his beloved tango. After Astor’s family returned to Argentina in 1935, pianist Arthur Rubinstein recognized Piazzolla’s musical talents and advised him to study orchestration with renowned Argentinian composer Alberto Ginastera. Work with the great composition teacher Nadia Boulanger deepened his understanding of musical forms. Piazzolla embarked on a career that stretched the bounds of tango and created some of the most evocative musical works of the 20th century. 11 11

We find ourselves in a strange moment for concert-making; everything about what, how, where, and for whom we play is being re-invented. Sometimes navigating through strange challenges can be the mother of invention, and I firmly believe that seemingly odd juxtapositions of musical genres can lead to a new way of experiencing music we love. I am hoping that this event is a timely answer to the deep need for live music-making that became evident to me in our months of quarantine and that I know you share because you are here... I could tell that you that my loves for tango and for Beethoven have always gone hand in hand. I could tell you that I have spent a lifetime recognizing the Latin elements in Beethoven’s rhythm and the influence of classical music on Astor Piazzolla generally. I have walked around for decades proclaiming that every great piece of music somewhere has a tango in it. I could tell you that the instrument that is the soul of tango, the bandoneón, was manufactured in Germany by a man who was born during Beethoven’s lifetime. Honestly though, more than any of these truths, it is primarily my intuition that tells me that this concert in the mysterious atmosphere of the Secret Garden is the right time to bring together the worlds of Vienna and Buenos Aires. Beethoven’s Septet was not only an early hit during the composer’s lifetime (one to which many of his later works were compared unfavorably, much to Beethoven’s annoyance) but also the perfect size for our socially-distanced venue. The choice to place Emmanuel Trifilio, our echt Argentinian bandoneón soloist, in the balcony above you will hopefully create a sense of enlightened conversation between the two musical worlds separated, yes, by some distance but still finding its way, as we are in life, toward a synthesis that might never have been discovered before now.

Emmanuel Trifilio, bandoneón International bandoneonist and prolific tango composer, Argentinian Emmanuel Trifilio brings a fresh perspective to the traditional tango sound, both in performance and composition. After touring across South America and Europe, Mr. Trifilio is now based in Washington, D.C. He has performed as soloist at Carnegie Hall, Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center, as well as across the U.S. and British Columbia. Mr. Trifilio regularly works with Otros Aires and QuinTango, and has appeared with the National Philharmonic Orchestra, Choral Arts Society of Washington, and Octavio Brunetti Tango Orchestra. Mr. Trifilio’s primary project, Trifilio Tango Trio, presents virtuosic performances of his original tango compositions. Their recent appearances include sold-out shows at D.C.’s Embassy of Argentina, Embassy of Uruguay, and venues in Buenos Aires. “Milonga de la Ausencia,” from their first album, Original (2016), was nominated for Best Original Score at the MOFF Film Festival in Milan 2016. Trifilio Tango Trio’s new album, Estaciones, was released in 2017.

Enriching Children’s Lives through Music ASO Sympatico is an El Sistema-inspired, before- and after-school music education program provided by the Alexandria Symphony Orchestra, operated in partnership with the Alexandria City Public Schools. Sympatico was born out of the ASO’s commitment to education, the youth of Alexandria, and social change. El Sistema originated as a music education initiative in Venezuela, providing high-quality instruction at no cost to students with the goal of social transformation. Today, there are El Sistema programs in more than 60 countries and over 100 active programs in the United States. Launched in 2014, ASO Sympatico serves two Title I schools in the Alexandria City Public School System (ACPS): John Adams Elementary and Patrick Henry K-8. More than 180 students receive intensive ensemble-based instruction building skills in musicianship, improvisation, and composition. Students at John Adams can choose between Cantamos (chorus), The Fiddle Factory (strings), Horns a Plenty (beginning brass), XyloKids (beginning Orff/mallets), Mallet Machine (intermediate Orff/mallets), and The Percussion Experience (bucket band). Patrick Henry students can choose between Chorus/ Orff or Good Vibrations (strings/winds/percussion). Sympatico is open to any enrolled student at no charge to the schools or their families. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic and ACPS distance learning, Sympatico will operate as a virtual program until the schools return to in-person instruction. Students will be provided ample opportunities for composition throughout the school year, premiering their original songs through drop parties, streamed on social media. The 2020-2021 Season marks the sixth year of the Adopt a Chair program, underwriting 17 musician chairs, including the Podium, Concertmaster, 12 Principals, one Assistant Principal, and two section players. “Adopt a Chair” is a signature giving program designed to provide funding for each musician’s salary and long-term sustainable funding for our orchestra. ASO is a community supported orchestra, requiring the ongoing support of people willing to invest in the future of live music performance. As a part of the Washington, D.C. metropolitan region, ASO concert-goers demand and expect the highest quality music offered by world-class musicians. Through this program, contributors endorse and ensure that quality through multi-year sponsorships. Sponsors have an opportunity to choose a specific instrument, receive special program recognition, and receive invitations to special events where they can meet and get to know the musicians holding the chair they have sponsored.
