Neighborhood Analysis
The City is comprised of 353 square miles and is located in the southeastern portion of the Commonwealth of Virginia in the Hampton Roads region.The Western Branch area of Chesapeake is bounded on the West by the Suffolk City Line, on the North by the Portsmouth City line, on the East by Western Branch of the Elizabeth River and on the South by Seaboard Airline Railroad.

Western Branch consists of neighborhoods including Ahoy Acres, Dock Landing, Davids Mill, Jolliff Woods, Meadow Wood Estates, Brittany Woods, Wellington, Dunedin and Silverwood.
The January 1, 2017 total population of the Western Branch area is 34,365. It is 14.35% of the total population of Chesapeake. The total population of the city of Chesapeake is 239, 538. The Hampton Roads Planning District Commission estimates that the City’s population will increase by the year 2034 with a projected population of roughly 313,600.
Two highways are convenient for Western Branch residents; I-664, part of the Hampton Roads Beltway, cuts right through the center of Western Branch and takes residents north and south. Taking I-664 south allows residents to get on I-64, to head towards southern Chesapeake, and I-264, to head towards Portsmouth, and to Norfolk and Virginia Beach by taking the Downtown Tunnel. At the northern boundary of the city, State Route 164 heads into the Norfolk/ Virginia Beach area by taking a route through Portsmouth to the Midtown Tunnel.
For planning purposes, Chesapeake is composed of nine Planning Areas: Camelot, Deep Creek, Great Bridge, Greenbrier, Indian River, Rivercrest, Southern Chesapeake, South Norfolk, and Western Branch. The majority of new development is occurring in the Greenbrier, Great Bridge, and Rivercrest areas.
