What is Serunding?

Serundeng, serondeng or serunding is a type of dish made with spices and cooked until dry, and sometimes greasy to last. It is cooked and stirred non-stop until completely dry because that way it will last a long time.In Malaysia, the term seronding refers to meat-based dried foods whether chicken, beef or the like with grated coconut.

It is a common dish eaten during Hari Raya Puasa and Hari Raya Haji. The community typically makes floss especially when there is a lot of the meat available or leftover during festivals. Serunding can be eaten with nasi himpit, ketupat nasi, ketupat daun palas, lemang etc.

History of Serunding

Serunding comes from the State of Kelantan Darulnaim and is traditionally operated in Kampung Laut, Jajahan Tumpat, Kelantan. Kampung Laut is now the largest serunding manufacturing center in Malaysia.

The date of the existence of the serunding has not been confirmed, but the serunding company in Kampung Laut has been pioneered by the late Mek Som binti Ismail or better known as Mak Som Pak Soh Lotri by the locals. Now the serunding manufacturing industry is inherited by his many grandchildren.
