WHEN TO USE “A” & “AN”

Both indefinite articles are used to name singular nouns, but notice their differences: When the next word starts with a CONSONANT SOUND

After a while Joseph gives up. He feels tired of all this walking and asking. He decides that maybe they are all right and he needs to rest.

He walks to the restroom. Now he is surprised. He realizes the restroom is actually the name for a public bathroom!

I live in Uptown. It’s a small district in south-western Minneapolis, Minnesota, close to Lake Calhoun Park. I love Uptown because there are a lot of things to do like going shopping. If you like nightlife and cultural events, this is your destination.

There are many artists and musicians who perform in the main square, their shows are fantastic. After the show you can go to the streets nearby where there are lots of bars and places to have fun, if you prefer to dance there is a big disco in front, so, there is noise everywhere.

There is a fair called the Uptown Art Fair. It’s a three-daylong festival, the second largest event in Minnesota. There is food, a live performance stage, a youth art fair and more.

Many years ago there was a tourism company in charge of the events and there were vacation cottages, hotels and there was a boating recreation too. Today, there are mansions, theatres and new buildings.

There are lots of other attractions too. Come and see it for yourself!

Cheater

Penguins at the zoo

A group of St. Andrews School’s students are taking a very difficult exam. At the end of the test, the teacher asks the students to put their pencils down and hand on their tests.

They stop except one student. He ignores the teacher and continues writing until he finishes. He gives the test to the teacher but she says “No, I’m not receiving that test. It’s too late”. The student asks “Do you know who I am?”

A zoo keeper, Ronald Royce, is taking 20 penguins to the local zoo, but while he’s driving, his truck stops working so he gets out of the car to fix it. Fortunately, in few minutes, another driver was passes by. He stops and Ronald asks for his help: “I am taking these penguins to the local zoo, can you help me?”

“No, and I don’t care,” the teacher replies. “Are you sure?” the student insists. “No, I don’t know” answers the teacher.

“Good” says the student, immediately he takes the pile of tests and throws the papers in the air. A few weeks later, he gets his test back with a “PASS” on it.

After two hours, Ronald, who is still on the road, sees the other driver coming back with the penguins. They are all very happy. A surprised Ronald asks “What are you doing?

Why do you still have the penguins on your truck?” the second driver replies, “We went to the zoo and had fun together so now we’re going to movies”.

The other driver accepts and takes the penguins to the zoo.

We were walking by the supermarket, we saw a crowd of people around a guy on the ground.

My friend’s dad pushed his way through the people screaming “Out of my way! I’m a doctor!” but the moment he got near to the man, a police officer stopped him and said “Sir, we’re arresting this man, clear the area!”

That’s my starter As part of my first week at my new job, my colleagues and boss invited me to a nice fancy restaurant. We all had a good time talking and ordering our food. The waiter came with some drinks and snacks. It was delicious. I really wanted to give a good impression to all the people around so I decided to pick one of the plates and offer it to them.

Suddenly, my boss stood up, approached and whispered in my ear: “That’s my starter you’re handing around”.

Christmas Card It was December 23rd and I was taking a morning shower when my son came in. He was all covered from head to toe in shaving cream. I couldn’t be angry, he looked so cute that I had the brilliant idea of taking a photo of him and making a Christmas card with it. My father was going to open a bakery in Boston. All his friends were saying how fortunate we were to get on the biggest ship of the world, the Titanic.

The Titanic was very luxurious. It was my first time on a ship.

Captain Smith was on deck and he was very nice. He had a beard like Santa and a big smile. I can still remember that moment.

He was smiling and welcoming us.

On the third night, I was sleeping comfortably when suddenly my mother woke me up and put a thick coat on me. My father was standing at the door, he looked terrified: “The ship has struck an iceberg”, and those were the last words I heard from him.

Everybody screaming and calling for help from different parts of the ship, while my father was putting me and my mother on a lifeboat. He couldn’t find a boat for himself.

When we were floating on the water, we could hear people

rushing on the deck. That’s when the panic started. All the people were terrified looking at the shipwreck. It was terribly cold. There were many people in the water, screaming desperately, drowning as the ship was slowly going down.

After a few hours, the silence invaded the atmosphere. My lifeboat was overcrowded so the officer in charge decided to put us on other boats to have more space for the people in the water.

The next day bodies were floating all around. I was looking at this scene when a ship came to rescue us. I knew I wouldn’t see my father again.

The Titanic sank in the early morning of April 15th 1912 in the North Atlantic Ocean. It had an estimated 2,224 people on board when it struck an iceberg at around 23:40 on Sunday, April 14th 1912. It resulted in the deaths of more than 1,500 people. It’s considered one of the deadliest disasters in history.
