RESEARCH / HYPOTHESIS

Physical healthcare environments can make a significant impact on how quickly a patient cohort of War Veterans can recover. We have decided to inject two main characteristics of Art and Creativity through the Heidelberg School Artists Trail Firstly, its focus on physical and mental wellbeing. Injecting therapeutic, hands-on, and alternative expressive interventions such as Creative Spaces and Walking Trails which creates a connection with the mind and body and relieves PTSD symptoms, such as stress and the release of emotions, suffered by 15.5 to 30 per cent of patients. Research shows that 24 per cent of War Veterans can benefit from such alternative therapies stated. Secondly, its relationship to art through nature and wildlife. Activities such as bird watching and walking while immersed with their creations provide positive distractions, social encouragement, sense of self-achievement and improve mental health

Not only will this site provide nurturing and therapeutic spaces for the patients with PTSD, but also creating a stronger connection with the community by bringing people together to and from the site, as well as paying homage to a piece of local cultural history. Along with the improvement of the hospital’s natural typography which will revitalize the old site and invite in the surrounding wildlife. Healthcare architecture in the field of Trauma-Informed Design must highlight the importance of its engagement with the body and mind through emotional and physiological aspects by taking into consideration the patients’ perspectives, on-site experiences, and possible challenges or struggles. Intertwining them into a supportive environment that is clean, calming and easy to use, through design interventions; such as the use of Soothing colours, as well as providing spaces that are flexible and easy to look after

4

This studio will provide an opportunity to understand current design issues in healthcare and how to provide holistic healing environments for people who have PTSD
