Catching up w/Matt Nicholson We take a few mintues to hear about Matt's fantastic quarter results, and his plans for the year ahead

What has been your journey so far ? How long at Mantra?

How did you get into the business / sales world?

Basically I’d just left university and I was just working, doing labouring, before joining Mantra and working with them for 2 years. I started in Swindon for about 6 months and Rob took me over to Australia, which was really inspiring, and then I got the opportunity to move down to Bristol. This was great as over the course of the year in Bristol, I got to see how the process of setting up a new company works, the mistakes you can make alongside the the positive things to take from it. Then I decided to come back up to work with Rob in Swindon just before Christmas.

What inspired you to set up your own company? What excites you about running your own company, what is your motivation?

The main thing for me is just the lifestyle it’s going to allow me to lead.

I’ve always wanted to take pride in calling something my own; watching other people run offices I really felt like I could do that. The big thing is the lifestyle that it will enable me to live in creating financial freedom for myself.

One of the biggest things for me is the self-development. I feel in the process of starting and running a successful business, you have to work on your character, you have to develop and grow in confidence;

for me, self development is on par with any sort of financial gain and something that I really enjoy. I honestly think that you’ll never be ‘complete’, you never reach the finish line in terms of this self-progress and I love that.

If you set a goal of running a successful company, there are certain qualities that you need to develop, and I really enjoy that; already in a couple of years, the difference in myself is amazing. After the first four years of running my own company, it’s exciting to think about who I will have become and what that will enable me to achieve, the level of confidence I will have reached.

What challenges have you faced along the way? Were you nervous about taking the plunge?

Moving down to Bristol - uprooting my life - presented lots of challenges in itself. I think the biggest challenge, but simultaneously the biggest positive, is that when you’re working in sales and training people, trying to create a business and working in such a communication orientated role, there are parts of your character and mentality that need to develop. The challenge is being brave enough to be introspective, recognising which aspects of myself need to change - from my daily habits to the workplace - and consequently having the confidence to learn from that. It highlights things you need to improve on, which is initially quite a scary thing to do.

You’re literally about to board the plane to Australia, how did this come about and what will you be doing out there?

Yes we are just about to board! So before christmas, our client suppliers, Appco, set a competition that anyone who got promoted before the end of January would win a two week trip to Australia, so we’ll be visiting a lot of successful business owners all around Sydney and Melbourne. There’ll be a bit of down time as well, but the main idea is to network with the other offices out there.

What are you looking forward to over the next few months?

I’m looking forward to running that first meeting with my guys once the company has properly launched, sorting out the logo...really just the whole process of turning the team that we’ve got into a real company.

That’s always been my motivation, to create something of my own, be my own boss. The development that will inevitably come with that is something that I’m really looking forward to.

I never realised how much I was really developing as a young entrepreneur until I caught myself thinking like one. Being amongst successful people has really enabled me to pick up successful traits through process of osmosis. I'm picking up leadership skills, managerial skills and how to run my own business - no matter how small or large it is!

And what have your personal successes involved?

As a crew we have promoted the most amount of leaders in this location. We now also hold all of the location PBs and records! I'm seriously excited to see what we can achieve as a crew this year. With the quality of the team we have I think we can really hit heavy!

Do you feel that Mantra has set you up for achieving great things and helped you along the way?

The experience, development and opportunities I’ve had at Mantra I could not get anywhere else! I don't know anywhere else that has a business model that can empower a 21 year old to incorporate their own business. It's not even just the model that's incredible - the support network I've been provided with has guided and inspired me to do bigger and better things since day one!

You’re currently in Australia after winning a trip out there!

Congratulations! Tell us how this came about?

To win the trip I didn't necessarily have to do anything out of my daily role, I just had to keep progressing; anyone who advanced to stage 4 of the business between the months of September to January automatically qualified. Being given the opportunity to go to Australia was a chance for me to meet with other business owners who were willing to share the secrets of their success. We spent each day with a minimum of 3 owners, taking part in Q&A sessions and learning their top tips for success in the business-place....Not to forget the nice dinners, drinks and sightseeing! If I were to take something away from this trip, it would be how to have an incredible work/life balance, how to take

ownership of your business and the quality of people to recruit. At the end of the day if you're happy at home, you'll be happy at work which we all know is important in this industry!

What are your ambitions and goals for the future? Where do you see yourself?

Easy question! I have 3 rocks, I suppose...The first being to hit is to get my business trading in Bristol within the next two months. The second is to save 100K in my first year of ownership and to simultaneously develop at least one of my guys to run a business of their own.

I like independence. A bit of freedom, being my own boss, that’s always been something very attractive, the opportunity to build something of my own really excited me, the financial independence that goes alongside running a business; I’ve always been taken with the Spirit of the Entrepreneur, so to build a business that meets my standards and expectations, with core company values at the heart of it is something that is really important to me, and something I am thrilled to have been able to realise.

Now before you founded RedSeven, you were working here at Mantra. How do you feel your three years with Mantra set you up for establishing your own business?

I started in the industry straight out of university. I had no business experience, so within my three years at Mantra they taught me how to sell, how to cope with people, management skills... essentially how to run a business. All the coaching training I got from Mantra really helped to set me up for my own business venture.

My company started in 2013 working with non-profits and residential campaigns, now we work with non-profits, residential campaigns, events campaigns and business campaigns; in the last 12 months we have progressed from concentrating on one market to a broader range of business ventures and collaborations, which is really exciting. (We’re currently raising about £90,000 a week for our charity partners which is incredible!)

What are your top tips for being a successful entrepreneur?

When I think about really successful people, the common denominator is ambition. People having that drive to do well, to be better than average. As a company we have 7 core values, including team-work, positive mentality, work ethic, likeability, being self-motivated… so these are some of the qualities that we look for and go on to cultivate within our company. To be a true entrepreneur you have to have incredible standards. The reason we do so well here at Red Seven is that we are meticulous with our values, our ethics and our morals; we do things professionally. We attract great people because we get great results.

Anyone can be successful in a short space of time, but to actually last in an industry you have to uphold your reputation, so I think having these core values are a huge part of what makes up the spirit of the

We spoke to Fidel Nanton about his experience:

‘The trip was incredibly inspiring and informative, it really expanded my knowledge which in turn gives me confidence when speaking to our customers. We had 6 different lectures on what the British Heart Infirmary do which informed us as to what their clinical trials involve.

The one that stood out was the Heart Plaster for Babies - this is a plaster that helps babies born with heart problems have a better survival rate and live a more normal life.’

The working relationship that we have developed with our charities is something that we are extremely proud of; the work holds such a lot of value, therefore it is really important that our team members are given the opportunity to directly engage with those that work at the heart of charities such as BHF. Veronica & the Russian Expansion

ere at Mantra we are continuing to expand, not just in the UK, but internationally as well. Currently, we have offices in the UK, Spain, and more recently we have begun to establish ourselves in Russia. Over in Moscow,

I got promoted to AO in two and a half years and had the chance to run an office in Newcastle; however, unfortunately I had to leave England on the edge of my ownership promotion due to my visa. That was very sudden fact that I wasn't really prepared for.

Where did you begin your journey into the sales and marketing world?

I finished Sussex university in Brighton and promptly moved to London to find a job and build my career. I joined the company in 2011 and since then it has been very adventurous journey!

My first week was not very resultative; I never had any natural ability to sell, but I knew that my ability lay in getting results by working hard. Things moved very quickly and I became a leader after only 8 weeks with the company which I think at the time was a record!

How did you continue to ensure that you were

That’s a huge obstacle to suddenly be faced with! How did you overcome this?

I moved to Russia to develop new division. Back then in Russia the business world was very rough and only in its infancy, similar to the that of Appco 20 years ago. That was the biggest challenge, to start from scratch and build the division and team in those fresh, undeveloped conditions - but for that reason it has become my biggest pride!

One door closed and another opened which presented me with the best opportunity I ever could have had. To be the first in a new country is challenging but for that reason it’s rewarding. After a year and a half I've built a great team of 20 guys and 17 leaders. I hit my assistant ownership promotion again and I have promoted 1 crew leader. I am about to promote my first AO and open my first outside deal. A big year lies ahead.

As a reward for the Top Premier Club team, we jet-

ted off to the beautiful resort of Chaminox for a well-deserved long weekend on the slopes.

Situated at the base of the highest summit in the Alps, we witnessed some stunning views, as we hit the snow and worked on our ski-ing finesse; home to the first ever Winter Olympics in 1924, these slopes have had experience sporting history in practise. We stayed in a wonderful boutique Hotel and alongside the activities, there were lot's of opportunities to relax and network. See you again next year..
