The Victory Bay residence, situated on Kiawah Island, South Carolina, is a three-story dwelling spanning 7,000 square feet. It consists of two distinct volumes: one primarily designated for bedrooms and the other for living spaces. These volumes are seamlessly connected by a glass atrium, which also serves as the main entry point. Considering South Carolina’s temperate climate throughout the year, the outdoor area features a screened porch, an L-shaped pool, multiple tiered terraces, and balconies on each floor.

The Arrabelle, located in Vail, Colorado, is a two-story condo of 11,200 square feet. The client and his family are avid skiers and intends on this house being their primary home during the winter ski season. The interior of the house is inspired by Mid-Western Colorado lodges and traditional elements of architecture.

CANAL CREMATORIUM

Juncture of Spirit & Earth: A Place of Transformation

The traditions and rituals that have provided human life with meaning and significance are now diminishing due to an increasingly globalized world. The decline of ritualistic practices can be seen clearly and literally with institutions of death in the United States. Crematoriums in the United States have become mechanized and sterile rooms that do not reflect the sanctity of a person’s last rites. They often occur in back rooms or basements of funeral homes that are located in suburban strip malls and shopping centers. Canal Crematorium is located in Richmond, Virginia at the site of a former hydroelectric power plant that is the confluence of the Canal and James River. In many cultures and religions water plays an important practical and symbolic role in death rituals and this building already provides dramatic sectional qualities of water, realigning the rites of death with earth and water. This abandoned, industrial, infrastructural shell is re-purposed to a form appropriate to the sacred act of cremation.

Our building being located in Manhattanville, New York City, makes it a site of historical, economic, and political importance. The original program on our site was a bus depot that covered the area of the site. In order to accomplish our goals of creating a pedestrian landscape that can establish clear connections to the urban setting, we demolished the bus depot and moved it underground since its function is clearly storage. When analyzing Manhattanville we first recognized the immediate social opportunities afforded by the viaduct, to the west of our site, economic opportunities provided by the commercial property scattered throughout the neighborhood, and the multi-generational richness the massive k-12 charter school, to the north of our site, could generate. Our idea was to seam these programs together cohesively and clearly throughout the site to create a community nucleus, which is where our project name Campo derives. Through a more specific, cultural and social analysis, we found a severe scarcity of music studios, clubs, and accessible performance spaces. This has become a key focus for our program given the rich history of music and performance in Harlem. By incorporating key essential program and establishing an overarching theme of music that is so central to Harlem’s history, our housing scheme marries practical economic need with cultural richness that establishes our project as the community nucleus.
