We were commissioned to write Green Love! by United Learning (who also commissioned Wassail! Carols of comfort and joy). It’s the sixth piece in our series for mixed choir, children’s choir and jazz quintet; the subject matter, as the title suggests, is the climate crisis and how global warming is adversely affecting our planet. As with all of the pieces in this series, many of the Green Love! songs are groove-based; that is to say that they are based on jazz/pop rhythms and grooves which need to be solid and secure. Choirs are helped with this in two ways: 1) support from the band accompanying them and 2) the addition of body percussion, created by Ollie Tunmer of Beat Goes On. Whilst singing about the climate crisis cannot, in itself, change anything, studies have shown that the act of singing words, as opposed to hearing or speaking them, helps them to register and stay in our minds. It is our hope that the young generation of singers who will form part of the choir for performances of this piece will become more motivated to make the changes necessary to save our world. With any luck, it will inspire the audiences too. Alexander L’Estrange (b.1974) and Joanna Forbes L’Estrange (b.1971) are prolific composers of choral music, both as individuals and as a partnership. They met as music undergraduates at Oxford University in the early 1990s and have been performing, writing and recording music together ever since. They receive regular commissions from choral societies, schools, chamber choirs, church choirs and a cappella groups and their music is performed and enjoyed throughout the world. Alexander and Joanna’s choral music, which is characterised by their mutual love of jazz harmonies and grooves, comes with excellent learning resources including part-learning tracks and backing tracks, which they create themselves in their home studio. They also offer coaching (in person and online) for choirs performing their music. Their popular workshop You can sing…but can you swing?! enables classical choirs to sing in non-classical styles, such as pop and jazz, with greater confidence.
