Composer’s note I wrote my arrangement of Amazing Grace during my time as the Musical Director of The Swingles. It had bothered me for some time that, while our library contained many pieces for the four male voices of the group, there were none for just the four female voices. We recorded it for our Christmas album ‘Unwrapped’ (2004). Each voice part has a turn to sing the melody while the other voices weave an accompaniment around it. The opening soloist has the most flexibility and can take her time, enjoying the gospel-style inflections of the line. Thereafter, the tempo should remain very fluid and breaths should never feel hurried. It’s up to the accompanying voices to follow the voice-part singing the lead. Joanna Forbes L’Estrange (b.1971) is a British singer, songwriter and choral composer who receives engagements throughout the world. A Master of Arts music graduate of Oxford University, she began her career as soprano and Musical Director of the five-time Grammy® Award-winning a cappella group the Swingle Singers, during which time she started composing and arranging music. She is founder and artistic director of the all-female vocal group AQUILA and appeared as a judge on the Sky 1 television series Sing: Ultimate A Cappella. In 2018, she made history with her charity single Twenty-first-century Woman, the first all-female recording session ever to have taken place at Abbey Road Studios.
