BIOGRAPHY

I am an industrial design student at San Francisco State University. I dabble in different types of design, but I mainly focus on physical products. I have an interest in toy/prop design and currently make props for cosplay in my spare time. Design was a subject that I had an interest in but did not know where or how to get involved in it when I was younger. Lately I’ve begun to cater my attention to the world of design to expand and find my own style in this ever growing world of many different designers.

PROCESS AND RESEARCH

The process started with getting a lay of the land by touring the school itself and seeing which locations needed additional signage that would benefit the school.

SKETCHES AND CONCEPTS

This project went through multiple sketches and concepts before the client and I came to a steady agreement in the direction the signage should go.

HAND HELD TOOL

The purpose of this project was to design, model, and render a handheld tool or hand held electronic device for a specific target demographic. In my case, I decided to work with a fashion/style group of people known as “Yami Kawaii which is a group that has a style catered toward a very cute and colorful aesthetic but also giving off a depressing and almost violent mood. All modeling work had to be done on SolidWorks.

PROCESS AND RESEARCH 16 | Alex Bang | Sairen

The research for this project consisted of a mood board for style and a product analysis for the type of product we were aiming to create. I decided to go with some kind of knife that someone in this demographic would carry around on a day to day basis.

SKETCHES AND CONCEPTS 18 | Alex Bang | Sairen

My sketches explored different types of knives along with the styles that this demographic would find appealing. Many small character details and defining logos that are found within the community of poeple were taken into consideration when sketching.

FINAL DELIVERABLES 20 | Alex Bang | Sairen

The final design ended up being a box cutter that one could carry around for everyday use that had the same mechanisms and blades as an everyday boxcutter. The main difference was the housing that it all came in which matched the aesthetic of the target demographic. Deliverables included a final assembly and render of the product.

PACKAGING DESIGN

The purpose of this project was to create a food product and its package based upon a given persona. In this case, the persona was a young individual who was very busy and did not have time to have proper meals but still wanted to remain healthy and continue a lavish life style. Daizu was created as a soylent based meal replacement that would be able to satisfy the persona’s needs and wants.

PROCESS AND RESEARCH 26 | Alex Bang | Daizu

Research for this project included the study of current products on the market and their target audience as well as understanding what types of products would appeal to the given persona. Things that were questioned included; What brands would appeal to the persona? What does the persona do on a day to day basis? What types of food would fit the persona’s life style?

SKETCHES AND CONCEPTS 28 | Alex Bang | Daizu

Initial sketches and concepts for this project focused around ideas of traditional Japanese gift boxes and considered the shape of modern Japanese beverages. The final design included a center circle that correlated to the Japanese flag but also included a color accent band to show influence of ribbon on gift packaging. Slight textures on the color blocks add some class to the overall design to give it a more premium feel.

FINAL DELIVERABLES 32 | Alex Bang | Daizu

The final deliverable for this project was a physical model of the product’s overall design. In this case it would be the packaging design on a bottle with corresponding color coordination around the bottle with details one would find on a product if they were to find it on a shelf in a grocery store.

COLLABORATION TANNER WEBB - ALEX BANG

FURNITURE DESIGN

AULKIA

The goal of this project was to create a stool using Fusion360 as the primary CAD software and creating a CNC milling path to mill wood in order to create said stool. Design choices were open thus allowing my partner and I to explore multiple ideas and see what could work as well as be innovative.

SKETCHES AND CONCEPTS 38 | Alex Bang | Aulkia

Multiple iterations and designs were worked through before coming to the final design style. Even with the final sketch created, after multiple concept/prototype models, additional adjustments were made to accommodate for physical features that would not work in a real life scenario.

PRODUCTION

Production of the stool was a very crucial part of the project as it was an intro into understanding the milling system; how it is set up and how is run. It would also dictate how well parts of the stool were designed by the way each piece fits together.

FINAL DELIVERABLES 46 | Alex Bang | Aulkia

The final deliverable was the finished stool. My partner and I had made many adjustments to the final piece as to make sure the stool was solid enough to seat atleast a single person on it without it falling apart. Racking was another issue that was resolved in the final design that were very prominent in the early stages of the build and was an issue that we definitely wanted to solve to make the stool much more comfortable to sit on.

FRANKENSTEIN

BOOK DESIGN

This purpose of this project was to design a book for the story Frankenstein or the Modern Prometheus by Mary Shelley. The overall design had to be able to show the overall theme of the story through visual language such as illustrations, photos, and type face.

PAGE CONCEPTS

Introduction chapter pages went through a few iterations to find what works best for the overall design. Small details such as tracking and kerning are taken into consideration and heavily affected the overall decision of the final design.

CHAPTER IMAGES

With each chapter comes a chapter image. Illustrations were made to accomodate what is to happen in the incoming chapter to give the reader an idea of what to expect but also a sense of wonder of what the image means or what is in the image to piece together the story. The black and white aspect of the illustrations set the tone of personal impact as if someone is creating a journal of their life and the torn pages portray the theme of distress that is expressed throughout the story.

COVER PAGE

The cover page was the last piece to be designed as it is used to tie all the elements of the book together. It gives a preview of what the book will be about but also works as a preview of the overall design theme the book carries. Multiple ideas were explored all having the same idea of torn pages to continue the theme of distress.
