SIUE to award posthumous bachelor’s degree in social work to Jasmine Streator DANA MCLENNAN copy editor

SIUE will award a posthumous degree to a student who was killed in a car crash earlier this year. The late Jasmine Streator, 26, will receive a bachelor’s degree in social work in the fall commencement. She died in a crash on Interstate 70 in June.

Streator was focused on her schooling and helped her peers do the same, according to her friend and classmate Carla Lybarger, a grad student from Edwardsville.

“She mommed the heck out of her friends. She’d be like, ‘Carla; did you get your homework done?’ I’d be like, ‘Oh yeah, I got done, girl.’ and she’s like, ‘Okay.’ and then she would talk to her other friend and be like, ‘You know this is due at noon. Like, what are you doing?

What is your excuse? You need to get your work done,’” Lybarger said. “Because she said that was her thing, she just wanted her friends to succeed just as badly as she wanted to succeed.”

Lybarger said she met Streator through classes and bonded with her because they were both mothers. She said it was nice to have someone else to understand what they were dealing with. Streator was determined to succeed in order to show her daughter, two and half year-old Lei’Lani that it could be done, according to Lybarger.

“We see Lei all the time, we would see Lei at study groups, we would see Lei every time we would walk the trails, she would have Lei because she didn’t have the options I did, but she made sure that she was telling us, ‘I’m getting this degree to show Lei, I’m going to do what I have to do,’” Lybarger said.

Lybarger said some of the teachers in the program helped make this possible by allowing students to bring their children on

certain days, rather than not come to class at all. She also said that Streator’s natural motherly instinct had a lot to do with why she was in the program.

“She grew up seeing young men going into prison or jail or issues that she thought could help. ‘I’m going to help them get a different path. I’m going to do what I have to do.’ That’s how she talked about it. She would say, ‘These are someone’s babies, and I’m going to get them out,’” Lybarger said.

When Streator became pregnant with Lei’Lani, which caused a few setbacks, she was dedicated to achieving her degree, Dominic Reynolds said. He is Lei’Lani’s father, and a senior with a degree in the accelerated nursing program from East St. Louis.

“The fact that you know, we had that surprise pregnancy that we did not plan and kind of came out of nowhere that made her take a semester off. I think it obviously added time to her plan that we didn’t expect,” Reynolds said. “But she took it on the chin like a champ and didn’t make excuses for it.”

Reynolds said after their daughter was born, she worked even harder than before as a full-time mom and student, while working full time as well.

“She was getting work done, staying up extra to finish work, have Lei, take care of Lei, make dinner for her and put her to sleep, and then stay up until whatever time she needed to complete assignments and do projects,” Reynolds said. “I’ve literally watched Jasmine do everything in the house and then wake up in the middle of the night just to get an assignment before the deadline.

Reynolds said originally, Streator was going to be a special education teacher, but had hit some roadblocks in her schooling.

“Her big thing was she wanted to really help people who are stuck in the prison system unfairly and then on top of that she wanted to find a way to help people rebound from being institutionalized,” Reynolds said.

Lybarger said that Streator was a teacher to many people, especially when it came to dismantling racism in the social work program and always searching for ways to stop it.

“She would hear something, or someone would say something, and she would show up and be like, “Hey, like, this is why you don’t say that. This is why you don’t do that. If you’re going to be a social worker, you need to make sure you’re aware of every bias,’” Lybarger said.

Reynolds said that while Streator had a plan to work eventually in the prison system, her main goal was to help at-risk kids in the system.

“She really wanted to touch as many people as she could. Jas was actually adopted, and I think that’s a big reason why she was trying to help kids who find themselves in the system or at risk for it,” Reynolds said.

Reynolds said Streator was very passionate about being one of the first people in her family to get a degree and setting a good example for Lei’Lani. He also said that she was a good friend.

“She was always very caring, a very happy person. She really, really cared about her friends and she would honestly, probably give them the shirt off her back if need be. She was a very devoted mother. [She] loved her daughter more than anything in the world,” Reynolds said.

Inspired by St. Louis and Edwardsville, graphic design student critiques suburban infrastructure NICOLE BOYD social media manager

Jake Wilson, who graduates this December with a BFA in graphic design, made prints of abandoned homes in St. Louis and an extinct butterfly species to highlight the harmful impacts of suburban sprawl.

Wilson said he took inspiration from infrastructure of suburbs from the past, such as areas of north St. Louis and East St. Louis, which both have very similar infrastructure to places like Edwardsville.

“What I’m really trying to do is prove a point, that the style of development or the style of infrastructure that we’re implementing has both devastating consequences on individuals and the environment,” Wilson said.

One portion of Wilson’s work is prints of an extinct butterfly species to demonstrate the environmental impact of suburban infrastructure, while the other is prints of three homes made from photos of north St. Louis.

“I combined that with architecture of more modern suburbs, bringing those together. In my opinion, [bringing] the thought

that suburbs of the past prove it’s a potential future for our modern suburbs,” Wilson said.

Wilson said initially in his research, he looked at his immediate surroundings, but realized the topic is larger because there are suburbs everywhere.

“With sprawling [and] new developments where we’re knocking out large lots of diverse plant [and] animal species and we’re replacing it with monocropping, you see a lot of grass and not a lot of diversity there, so lack of diversity isn’t good,” Wilson said.

“And it just has a chain reaction from then on.”

Wilson said like most suburbs, Edwardsville is built with the car in mind and doesn’t have great public transportation, which makes car pollution a big concern.

He said traveling to walkable cities with better infrastructure, such as Amsterdam, inspired his work.

“Seeing that and then seeing St. Louis, of places I’m really familiar with, I started to notice the abandonment, like especially everything north of Delmar Street. It’s almost totally abandoned, right?” Wilson said. “So having that perspective of seeing a city that’s high functioning in terms

of infrastructure and then having that knowledge coming back and then that just opened my eyes to, ‘Why are we living this way?’ And that there also is this alternative.”

Wilson said he hopes his work can prove that there is a problem.

“I try not to offer any solutions, at least at this point in my work,” Wilson said. “I think to start, we need to realize that there is a problem.”

Ryan Horvath, printmaking instructor, said Wilson has taken printmaking with him every semester since Spring 2020. Horvath said Wilson is passionate, dedicated, curious and really strives to articulate his content clearly.

“Jake came in with a very strong kind of formal sensibility.

His technical skills obviously improved as you’d expect through intensive study, but probably the biggest area of growth for him is just the depth and complexity of the contents of his artwork,” Horvath said.

Horvath said Wilson has found a voice in the media he’s chosen.

“He’s found a way to really combine his passion of graphic design and printmaking in what I think is a very unique way. I’m

really fascinated by the rich textures that he’s able to create in his prints and just how dynamic and engaging his compositions are,” Horvath said.

Horvath said he and Wilson talked about how Edwardsville’s setup encourages car culture. He said for example, Edwardsville has a great bike trail system, but that it is recreational and doesn’t support a ride to the grocery store.

“I think that he noticed some of the kind of lack of infrastructure in north St. Louis, of how detrimental that can be for everything, but even particularly low income individuals trying to access things like food and health care, getting to and from work,” Horvath said.

Laura Strand, a professor in the art and design department who teaches the textiles arts program, had Wilson in a beginning textiles class and a book arts class.

Strand said the first project he made in her class focused on a road from Edwardsville to St. Louis. According to Strand, Wilson made several books focused on different places across the river. She said he went to north St. Louis and photographed

abandoned brick buildings that spoke about the loss of life in those neighborhoods.

“He’s coming into a place where he’s really able to speak about all of the problems of our economic system and how it’s detrimental to very, very many people,” Strand said.

Strand said Wilson is always asking if he can push an idea further, not to be competitive or obnoxious, but because he’s always looking for more from himself as an artist.

“He wants to be making work that discusses, that plays, that has interest that is deeply embedded in the human condition. He’s interested in social justice. He wants to talk about people,” Strand said. “He wants his artwork to be directly linked into a social dialogue.”

Wilson’s post-graduation plan is to attend graduate school, although he’s not sure where he’ll go yet.

“Currently I just want to keep working. I just want to keep producing prints, keep spreading awareness,” Wilson said. “I don’t plan to deviate from this subject matter anytime soon.”

Veteran and social work graduate student explores the question: ‘Did the military make mental health illegal?’

Amanda Depew, a U.S. Air Force veteran and a graduating social work grad student, works to improve the lives of female veterans and helping to secure housing for homeless veterans.

Depew, from Belleville, Illinois, technically completed her graduate school work back in August, but she will be walking the stage at the December commencement and will also be speaking at the commencement. Depew said she has had an interesting path to get where she is. After enlisting in the military in 2003, she served one tour in Afghanistan before returning stateside and serving her country until 2007. She then started her undergraduate in nursing before switching to social work, her true passion.

“Honestly I’ve always wanted [to be a social worker]. When I was 13 years old, I actually wrote a letter to the social work program at SIUC. I’ve always had that empathic spirit. I’ve always been a helper regardless. I just didn’t know until I became a grown-up that you need a degree to be a real helper in the real world. So once I got out [of the military], it took me a little bit to get my footing back in the civilian realm of things. But

honestly, coming back to school and get- titled “Did the military make mental ting this degree is actually what gave me health illegal?” That is what she believes to that footing. It’s always been something be the basis of much of her research.

“The victim is chastised and basically ran out of the service. When [the military] runs that person out of the service, it limits them access to the services that they really need, once they’ve been booted.

That’s where my fight is. All of that, and it’s so messy,” Depew said. “There’s a lot of women that are now getting loud about the UCMJ and the way it’s being used. So we’ll see how it goes in the next few years.

That’s pretty much what my grad research has uncovered for me and that’s what drives me now in my social work.”

Depew said she is also grateful for the opportunities she has had to work with Veteran Services at SIUE and other local organizations. She said one of the organizations especially close to close to her heart this holiday season this year is Got Your Six Support Dogs, as she was one of 10 veterans to recently receive a service dog. She said Conner, her service dog, has become one of her best friends.

“He’s been phenomenal. He is the reason I now have more structure. Shout out to [Got Your Six Support Dogs] for making these holidays fantastic this year,” Depew said. “He’s like the fourth kid in the house and seriously couldn’t be happier.”

Students explore the paranormal and religion in final project FRANCESCA BOSTON reporter

Two mass communication students who will be graduating at the winter commencement have been working together to find out if there is a correlation between watching and believing paranormal shows and religion.

The group, which includes mass communications majors Jamie Grigsby and Anna Gentelin, both of whom are from Alton, Illinois, and mass communications major Noah Jones who is from White Hall, Illinois, are working on finding out if there is a connection between religion and the paranormal in regards to paranormal representation in the media—particularly TV shows.

Grigsby said she was the one who suggested the idea to study the paranormal.

She said she has always had an interest in paranormal activities after experiences as a child that she wasn’t able to explain.

“I’ve been researching for going on

more than 10 years now. It’s so fascinating.

There are so many different avenues that you can take with it,” Grigsby said. “The paranormal is not just ghosts, it’s so much other stuff. I’m more focused on the ghost aspect because that’s something that I’ve grown up kind of questioning and dealing with and trying to figure out. Within the past few years, I decided to start going on investigations to see what that’s like.”

Jones said he was the one to introduce religion into the project, as he grew up in a religious household and had always been interested in how religion plays a role in people’s lives.

“I was the one who brought up more of the religious aspect. I would say religion [has] played a big part in my life,” Jones said. “While I’m not extremely religious, I was raised in a Catholic church, and I’ve always been interested in learning about religions. It was a good combination because Jamie [Grigsby] is very interested in ghost hunting and we decided that we’re going to look at correlations between the two.”

Jones said even though they haven’t finalized their date, he already predicts at least one of their hypotheses is going to be wrong, just because that is the way that experiments work.

“I think a big thing is understanding that we are going into situations with preconceived views and those views could be right, but they also could be wrong,” Jones said. “Almost definitely, we will find that some of our preconceived ideas such as religious people aren’t as interested will be wrong. I don’t know which hypothesis will be wrong, but it’s almost a guarantee that some of them will be wrong. Everything is much more complex than it seems on the surface.”

Gentelin said she finds the most interesting part of the project to be the chance to explore a topic that hasn’t really been explored a lot before. She said she has enjoyed working with her classmates on the project, as they both bring certain strengths to the group.

“Jamie [Grigsby] brings a lot of pas-

sion to this project, because she cares a lot about the paranormal. Noah [Jones] is really great at organizing everything [as] he’s a [psychology] minor, so he’s familiar with putting together papers and projects like this,” Gentelin said. “He’s really awesome at organizing everything. I think that this is a really awesome team. I’m super blessed to be working with both of them.”

Undrah Baasanjav, an associate professor in the mass communications department, said she finds the topic interesting and that she has been pleasantly surprised by the project, as the paranormal is not a typical senior project subject.

“All three of them are very motivated students. They’re working on this project, which is very interesting. They’re working incredibly well, which is a very amazing thing when you do the group work,” Baasanjav said. “It was a very pleasantly surprising project, because I wasn’t sure, in the beginning, because it’s paranormal, and then they really worked hard to research this topic that [included] religion.”
