The Floating Crowd

Vorrei iniziare col dirvi da subito che questa raccolta di scatti non è (e non vuole essere) un tributo ad un’istallazione artistica, The Floating Piers, che considero comunque un opera di un valore intrinseco straordinario, concettualmente vincente e concretamente emozionante.

Così, visto e considerato la genialità visionaria degli autori, Christo e Jeanne-Claude, nonché la perfetta trasposizione del suo nobile intento in una realtà realizzativa ed organizzativa splendidamente compiuta ed efficiente, sembrerebbe stonato (e quasi offensivo) iniziare con un affermazione così forte e decisa nel mettere prontamente l’opera in secondo piano.

Tale consapevole presa di distanza da The Floating Piers, che pur rimane un background costante ed un elemento inevitabilmente indispensabile all’interno di ogni singolo scatto, rappresenta a mio parere una “cafoneria” assolutamente necessaria a focalizzare l’attenzione dei molti verso il vero protagonista di questo modesto volumetto.

Dunque non tanto un tentativo di oscurare l’istallazione ed i suoi autori, quanto piuttosto di illuminare ciò che i medesimi, più o meno consapevolmente, hanno innescato.

I would like to start by telling right away that this collection of shots is not (and will not to be) be a tribute to an installation art, The Floating Piers, that nevertheless I consider a work of an extraordinary intrinsic value, conceptually successful and concretely exciting.

So, considering the visionary genius of the authors, Christo e Jeanne-Claude, and also the perfect transposition of his noble intention in a beautiful realization and organization accomplished and efficient, it would seem out of tune (and almost offensive) to start with a statement so strong and decisive that immediately puts the artwork into the background.

This conscious distancing to The Floating Piers, which although it remains a constant background and an inevitably and essential element in every single shot, is in my opinion a “rudeness” absolutely necessary to focus the attention of all towards the real star of this modest little book.

Therefore, not an attempt to obscure the installation and its authors, but rather to illuminate what they, consciously or unconsciously, have triggered.

The Floating Crowd è un racconto ad immagini di un “pellegrinaggio mediatico” che nel mondo dell’arte è probabilmente senza precedenti; un flusso umano che per giorni ha popolato quei luoghi quieti e sperduti, che sono diventati improvvisamente un Luna Park culturale (ed economico) in cui le visite giornaliere sono riuscite a fare concorrenza nientedimeno che a quelle di EXPO2016, l’evento culturale più importante organizzato in Italia nell’ultimo decennio a questa parte.

Potremmo continuare elencando tutta una serie di dati e di numeri, che già da soli mostrano come l’opera di Christo e consorte rappresenti, di per sé, un evento fuori dal comune nel panorama dell’artistico nazionale (e non solo).

Ma più di ciò che i numeri da record ci dicono, è quello che i numeri non ci dicono a darci realmente un’idea dell’eccezionalità dell’evento: per quanto ogni singolo dettaglio tecnico ed organizzativo fosse stato preventivato e gestito con accuratezza, nessuno aveva neanche lontanamente pensato un’affluenza del genere.

The Floating Crowd is a photographic story of a “mediatic pilgrimage” that in the art world is probably without precedent; a human stream that for days has populated those places quiet and remote, which have suddenly become a cultural (and economic) Luna Park in which the daily visits have managed to do competitive nothing less than those of EXPO2016, the most important cultural event organized in Italy in the last decade now.

We could continue by listing a whole range of data and numbers, which already on their own show how the work of Christo and his wife represents, by itself, an extraordinary event in the national panorama of the artistic (and not only).

But most of what the record numbers tell us, is that the numbers don’t tell us to really give an idea of the exceptional nature of the event: as every single technical and organizational details had been planned and managed carefully, no one had even remotely thought a turnout like that.

Da cosa è dipeso dunque questo interesse spropositato per l’evento? Cosa ha spinto milioni di visitatori venuti da tutte le parti d’’Italia e del mondo, ad essere presenti e testimoni di questo enorme galleggiante giallo? Forse un profondo e sentito interesse per l’arte e le sue espressioni artistiche? Magari per qualcuno, certo; difficilmente per la maggior parte, visto e considerato che fin troppo spesso mostre ed eventi culturali non pullulano certo di visitatori come, ad esempio, concerti musicali ed eventi sportivi.

Quale è stato dunque l’ingrediente magico di questo interesse massivo e popolare?

Non è certo un segreto il fatto che oggi il sistema globalizzato e interconnesso dei mass media riesca ad indirizzare (e spesso pure manipolare) abitudini ed opinioni in maniera sempre più veloce ed esponenziale.

Un processo iniziato già dallo scorso secolo ma che nel nuovo millennio, con l’ascesa dei social network, ha subito un evoluzione strategica sempre più vincente spostando l’attenzione dal generale al particolare, dallo spettacolo allo spettatore.

From what was due this enormous interest for the event, then? What has driven millions of visitors from all parts of Italy and the world, to be present and witness to this huge yellow float? Maybe a deep and heartfelt interest in art and its artistic expressions? Perhaps for someone, of course; difficult for the majority, considering that all too often exhibitions and cultural events doesn’t teeming whit visitors, such as, for example, musical concerts and sporting events.

What was therefore the magic ingredient of this massive and popular interest?

Is not a secret that today the globalized and interconnected system of mass media is able to direct (and often even manipulating) habits and opinions in an ever more rapid and exponential way.

A process that started since last century but which in the new millennium, with the ascent of social networks, has undergone an increasingly successful strategic evolution shifting the focus from general to specific, from entertainment to the spectator.

Se lo spettatore diventa più importante dello spettacolo, ecco allora che The Floating Piers diventa una “passerella” irrinunciabile (ideale più che reale), dove far sfoggio della nostra individualità, il nuovo e splendente vestito che la contemporaneità ci ha cucito addosso come analgesico temporaneo alla nostra perdita d’identità comunitaria.

L’evento, con la sua deriva mondana, diventa l’espediente con cui elevarci dalla condizione di dispersione sociale, in un rincorrersi di fotografie, video, testimonianze e commenti dove l’ “Io ci sono” diventa l’unico modo in cui, attraverso una sovraesposizione ed ostentazione (spesso fittizia) della propria persona e dello stile di vita, tentando continuamente di emergere tra “gli altri”, riusciamo finalmente a sentirsi parte della comunità social.

If the spectator becomes more important to the show, here then that The Floating Piers become an indispensable “catwalk” (ideal more than real), where to show off our individuality, the new and resplendent outfit that contemporaneity has sewn on us as a temporary analgesic to our lost common identity.

The event, with its decadent worldliness, becomes the expedient with which to elevate the condition of social dispersion, in a succession of photographs, videos, testimonies and comments where the ”I’m here” becomes the only way, through overexposure and ostentation (often fake) of oneself and own lifestyle, trying constantly to stand above “the others”, we can finally feel part of the social community.

The Floating Crowd è una piccola finestra su di noi, un modo come un altro per raccontare il presente e interrogarci sul futuro. Per cercare di capire chi siamo, cosa stiamo cercando ed in che direzione stiamo andando. E’ un pezzo di umanità, con i suoi sogni e la sua miseria; con la sua voglia di restare a galla in questo mare di incertezze e di caducità.

Facciamoci un selfie, condividiamolo, parliamone. Siamo sulla passerella gialla. Esistiamo.

In fondo anch’io, come gli altri, per quanto mi sforzi di credere di aver intenzioni ben più nobili da realizzare, faccio parte della stessa identica grande folla che dice: “Io ci sono”.

The Floating Crowd is a small window over us, a way as any to tell about the present and wonder about the future. Trying to understand who we are, what we are looking for and in what direction we are going on. It ‘a piece of humanity, with his dreams and his misery; with his desire to remain afloat in this sea of uncertainty and transience.

So make a selfie, let’s share it, let’s talk about this. We are on the yellow piers. We exist.

After all, I as well as the others, how hard I try to believe that I had nobler intentions to make, I’m part of the very same large crowd that says, “I am here.”

da “La Vignetta Blog” del 6 Luglio 2016 Ha da poco chiuso i battenti "The Floating Piers" la spettacolare passerella galleggiante realizzata dall'artista bulgaro Christo e la sua compagna Jeanne-Claude nello spettacolare sfondo del lago d'Iseo. Un'opera spettacolare formata da una serie di strutture galleggianti ricoperte da un tessuto giallo acceso, messa a disposizione dei visitatori dal 18 Giugno al 3 Luglio. Il progetto di Christo, che ha fatto tanto parlare di se sui media italiani e non solo, ha prodotto un interessamento di massa che ha portato più di un milione di persone a visitarla. Un risultato sorprendente che neanche l'artista avrebbe mai pensato di raggiungere, figlio di una movimentazione social e della corsa ai "selfie" più cool del momento. Il "miracolo" contemporaneo della società dei media.
