Having opened its doors to the public in May of 2019, the Florida State University Primary Health Clinic is searching for expansion upon its current facility. Located in southwest Tallahassee, its current location was chosen as the zone is in what can be considered a food desert and impoverished area.

Physicians wanted to create a welcoming environment to allow visitors of all ages and abilities to feel at ease.

The current facility serves as a beacon of hope in an area where residents may otherwise forgo receiving any medical care. Therefore, current staff members proposed expanding into a new location to encourage health accessibility and interdisciplinary needs in partnership with the Florida State medical schools.

Staff members emphasized team-based care, staff privacy, efficiency, and betterment of the community and the future of healthcare to dictate the design of the space. Based on continuing research, some goals that were established included providing an innovative nnovative healthcare design solution fit for and that epitomizes team care and interdisciplinary practices.

Furthermore, it was important to create a rejuvenating space in which patients feel welcome, revitalized, and a part of the community.

Each space should bring forth natural elements while maintaining a sense of privacy and the inclusion of positive distractions for patients and staff members, alike.

DESIGN DE VELOPMENT PROJECT CONCEPT: In a world where our knowledge of the built environment is expanding, building elements need to constantly bear weight and support from adjacent building blocks. Similar to this, the mental health stigma is getting broken down, allowing people to discover and think of support treatment as more of a long-term benefit over a present negative situation. With this in mind, the concept of building blocks and support strategies comes into play as healthcare integration along with the need for quality access is at the core of the new FSU clinical facility construction. Users will experience a collaborative and open design to facilitate communication between healthcare providers and patients. The concept is meant to show a synthesis of team building and individual motivation to promote the health of the body, community, and healthcare discipline.

The clinic’s exterior showcases graphics that are inspired by the city of Tallahassee and its citizens. The entry into the clinic provides shaded areas that provide grounding features and wayfinding.

WOODEN CEILING HEIGHT - 11’ - 9” AFF An Armstrong WOODWORKS tegular wooden ceiling was chosen throughout the hallways. The wooden ceiling with an NRC of .9 is also a suitable choice, for absorbing noise in high traffic walkways.

ACT CEILING HEIGHT - 12’ - 8” AFF A grey ACT was chosen for the majority of the spaces for its NRC rating of .7 and above. This is a more cost effective choice for areas not typically used by patients.

GYPSUM BOARD HEIGHT - 11’ - 9” AFF Gypsum board in Sherwin Williams Spatial White was used throughout the clinic for its clean appearance. However, it is kept away from more humid areas.

CONSIDERATIONS: »

The LED lights were chosen for its high CRI over 80 and dimmable capabilities, suitable for rendering colors accurately in areas such as exam and procedural rooms.

The hallway fixtures provide diffused lighting, limiting glare in patient and physician walways throughout.

The fixtures are UL certified and hold warranties of five years and above, suitable for high usage purposes.

Eureka Lighting in LED Slant allows for artwork to be showcased, providing an evenly spread direct source.

The exterior is tied in as the PolyVision Ceramic Steel panel system is used to create an interior customizable panel graphic.

These pieces will change every month as the children from Sabal Palm Elementary School get to design its content.

The reception area includes two doors into the East and West wings, one established as the entrance (left door) and the other for exiting purposes (right door) in order to alleviate traffic flows throughout the day.

CONSIDERATIONS: »

The reception desk houses under millwork lighting to direct visitors to the desk and check-in and check-out kiosks. The lighting also redirects visitors towards the community room.

The transaction top serves as a privacy threshold for the medical staff receptionists behind it and further houses cork boards.

The lower counter serves as a space for the digital check-out kiosk for patients after their visits.

Each treatment area has a resin plate outside of the patient entrance for wayfinding purposes along with a clinic floorplan and current position at the entry into each hallway.

Each exam room has an ADA compliant room signage plate next to it at 44 inches above the finished floor for guiding purposes.

The patient corridors have a wooden ceiling that is able to guide them back to the reception.

The hallways include stainless steel hand railings at 36” above the finished floor.

The exam rooms include a sidelight in order to let natural light into the space.

The separate corridors for physicians and guests allow for privacy as per the Joint Commission and HIPAA Standards call for.

The exam rooms along the perimeter of the building allow patients to easily access their exam rooms for the day. The ceilings also incude wooden baffles with a high NRC rating which will lower the ceiling and imply a lower noise level zone.

Each exam room has a separte staff and patient entrance, creating three overall zones that include: patient zones, family/guest zones, and physician zones.

For intedisclipinary purposes, each exam room is 20 percent larger than average patient exam rooms. This change in size allows for up to five people to stay within the room at a time.

The vertical cabinet was chosen to use more vertical space for medical and technological storage, giving more room for family seating and walking space.

Family zone seating consists of Kimball Spruce seating for its easy cleanability between the seat and back.

The Pith or community room with adjacent teaching kitchen plays off of the idea that nutrients are carried through the pith just as knowledge and food provide nutrients to our own bodies. The community room is meant to be used throughout the day and after hours, making its location right off of the reception an ideal place in order to keep the treatment areas and pathways clear after hours. The furniture used can easily be moved around to create a variety of seating arrangements and provides easy cleaning as well. The space is meant to be calm and relaxing, but invigorating to users.

The Medical Staff Area includes window views into procedural rooms in order to monitor patients during treatment and scheduled visits.

The staff area includes an in-room laboratory area used to take vitals and have adjacent access to blood-draw areas. This also has a shareable storage space into the bathroom for specimen collection.

Tallahassee currently has one humane society in its reach and a few small animal protection services; but no established, well-rounded, sustainable animal care facilities exist inside the city’s borders.

The proposed design solution for the vacant Toys-R-Us in Tallahassee, Florida presents a valuable opportunity to engage with the community and benefit current as well as potential animal owners on caring for their beloved pets.

The scale of the project will also encompass the need for a community ommunity getaway and therapeutic stress relief for all users. The design of this animal care facility will provide a space for community engagement ranging from locals, stressed out college students, to residents of nearby counties

or states seeking to take home a well-rounded adoptable pet. The goal of the design is to provide a self-sustainable facility that promotes residents to adopt, but also promotes the idea of healing both for visitors and the pets themselves. The space will focus on providing the community with opportunities to actively engage with the animals and their journey to adoption with options such as behavioral training and stress management areas. The facility will provide jobs, volunteer opportunities, while fostering community engagement all within a more centralized shelter with all-in-one services for the city of Tallahassee.

IN COLLABORATION WITH WENDIE DUNCAN + LAURA GREENWOOD

DESIGN DE VELOPMENT PROJECT CONCEPT: The expansion upon the Leon County Humane Society brings forth the idea of renovation and change while mitigating anxiety for pet inhabitants and staff members themselves.

Known for their use in hot stone therapy, basalt stones provide a calming experience when going in for a massage. Warmth, healing, bouncing back, and relief encompasses what the small stones can accomplish within a mere hour. Similarly, expanding into a new facility brings forth stepping stones into a future for the revitalized space for future pets and staff. The curvilinear shape and form may influence the interior architecture and ceiling designs, providing a nice, clear, and logical flow between spaces. Though small, the stones are durable and can take in heat, echoing the expected high traffic use every day. For this reason, durable materials are needed throughout the space whether visitors are in the adoption area or stress-relief zones. These aspects could influence lighting design, signage, and circulation features. The promoted environment will foster an environment of relief, comfort, and happiness for staff members, visitors, and of course the pets themselves.

ANIMAL SHELTERING HAS GONE FROM ANIMAL CONTROL TO ANIMAL WELFARE. CLASSICAL MUSIC WAS OFTEN PLAYED IN KENNELS TO CALM ANIMALS.

The reception area is meant to bring about a revitalizing and welcoming environment for visitors, staff, and pets staying within the shelter.

The various seating options accommodate all ages and abilities while wide paths of travel allow for easy circulation. This is especially helpful when walking dogs up for adoption. Whether a visitor comes in to adopt or to groom their pet, the reception area is set up to make the visit easier for all parties.

The grooming area provides grooming, bathing, and drying stations of various sizes to accommodate all dogs. At the Canopy Care Shelter, grooming is offered to pet owners and used to provide funding for the shelter animals. The window walls allow visitors to look into the space, making for another point of interaction between the community and the shelter.

Vines climbing up against a curtain wall are used to visually allow a sense of privacy and verticality.

The cat area on the upper level allows visitors to play, watch, and mingle with cats in a variety of settings including their Cat Condos, cat enclosure, and plant areas. The space gives visitors options to decide their task and the therapeutic ability to play with the shelter pets. The natural light coming in from the skylight highlights the natural elements throughout the space which allows pets up for adoption to have revitalizing views from their own homes.

The Genuinely Cosmetics retail aisle is held within a local grocery market, Grocer, Inc. in which store owners wanted to change the grocery store shopping experience. In response to the downsizing of department stores and ongoing store closures, the market owners wanted to bring forth a product, brand, and experience that would encompass the luxury of department store brand but provide the inclusivity of ages, races, and budgets that grocery stores often are distinguished for. The self-care brand highlights its products through the use of makeup kiosks while also supporting local and similar brands that provide similar results. These products will come from E.l.f., Physician’s Formula, Colourpop, Pixi, Derma-E, and the

market’s very own Genuine Cosmetics makeup lines as these brands have crueltyfree designs that align with the store’s ideals and provide a variety of shades for every consumer. The aisles will be divided by product rather than brand in order to provide consumers with a clear path that is eased with the use of the kiosk at both entrances.

The aisles were designed with functionality in mind and place more consumed products near the registers. Being placed in a grocery store will allow convenience, but the architectural features will add a sense of luxury and originality.

DESIGN DE VELOPMENT PROJECT CONCEPT: As societal norms change, so too do consumers’ desires. Consumers, are increasingly wielding power that prompts brands to become more inclusive while still maintaining quality. Personal stories and backgrounds now play into a company’s success. With all of this in mind, the concept of building connections inspired the design due to its encompassing of sustainable practices, inclusivity for all, transparent manufacturing process, and effective marketing. The design will be guided by the use of clear sight-lines and way-finding features through ceiling and flooring changes, but also visual cues marking products. A calm and natural color palette will be used to appeal to teenagers helping them to feel more beautiful and sophisticated, but also appeal to an adult consumer group as the product is the ethical, sustainable, and most cost-effective brand.

The dual vanity in the center of the Genuine Cosmetics aisle serves as a space where men and women can test selected products to see if they want to buy them for future purposes.

The eye product section includes eyeshadow, eyeliner, and primers from a variety of brands that will give consumers options to mix up their makeup regimen. These are placed closer to the checkout entrance as eyeshadow palettes are becoming more commonly used in makeup routines.

The cosmetics kiosk will allow customers to have their skin looked at by innovative technology to direct them to the most appropriate makeup selections within the store. The analysis will then be printed on recycled paper and will direct users to the merchandise.

The makeup accessories section includes makeup brushes, containers, bags, and packaging for the on the go consumers or those looking to spice up their collection. These are conveniently placed closet to the checkour entrance for any last minute purchases.

The lip product selection includes lipsticks, lip stains, chapsticks, and lip scrubs for consumers who are looking for a pop of color. The kiosk takes the customer on a journey from small to larger areas on the face throughout the aisle.

SockWell, a compression and therapeutic sock company was established in 2008 with a headquarters in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Their merchandise launched in 2011 and can be found online and limited retailers in Tennessee. With an emphasis on “feeling better in style,” SockWell has “reinvented the therapeutic sock by spinning innovative technology with modern styling for a modern lifestyle look.” With an emphasis on sustainability and wellness benefits, SockWell’s website, color scheme, and vision encourage a calm and comfortable appearance with a modern design twist. Just as their brand inspires wellness in their consumers, it also emphasizes the importance of giving staff and consumers a health and wellness-focused

lifestyle. For the design scope, the company wanted the design to provide a rejuvenating workspace that inspires creativity and efficiency for the business while minimizing the user’s stress while in and indoor space. The space was also designed to encourage interdepartmental collaboration, in turn fostering a sense of community. The design features were put into place to allow staff to see the importance of human importance within the workspace, clients, and city living. The overall design of the space is one that encourages the company to become a leader in the field by establishing a workspace that is conducive to innovation and collaboration.

DESIGN DE VELOPMENT PROJECT CONCEPT: Once considered as one of the most polluted cities in 1969, Chattanooga has transformed into one with the cleanest within 50 years. Through political and social change, the Chattanooga population revitalized their ecosystem for the future. Similarly, Sockwell is a company that stresses the importance of having a sustainable environment; one that supports a more homegrown and natural process of making. With this in mind, the concept of a vision for the future made possible by “Homegrown Revitalization” was chosen to inspire the upcoming design. The surrounding city’s change from such a negative ecosystem to a sustainable community regarding human action goes with the sustainability aspect that Sockwell pushes in its brand. The concept is meant to show a synthesis of human interactions with the environment that has led to its rejuvenation and total turn around within the ecosystem, workspace, and themselves. The concept will be demonstrated through a tiered open floor plan with hints of private and collaborative spaces in between; providing a flexible, yet organic layout that will provide staff with a variety of seating options and acoustical privacy.A main goal of the design is to provide a rejuvenating workspace that inspires creativity and efficiency for the business while minimizing the user’s stress while in and indoor space.

The New Leaf Cafe is located on the third floor of the Sockwell office and has views looking out to Finley Stadium, providing some positive distractions for staff members throughout the day.

The third floor location allows for staff members to also have a view towards the downstairs, vertically connecting the spaces.

The clients, Karen and Bob Zielaskowski are retired and are close to retirement, respectively.

Having worked in the medical field, Karen wishes to comply with ADA requirements while maintaining a comfortable home environment. The clients are in their mid-60s and are drawn to the culture of each city and what it has to offer to the architecture and local entertainment. Both clients have specifically asked for ADA compliance in the master bathroom and wherever possible in the home. Due to their active lifestyle, hosting space is necessary along with a large kitchen, as this is where Mrs. Zielaskowski spends the majority of her time during the week and weekends. The main objective for this project is to create two distinct but cohesive

residences of 1500 square feet for a newly retired couple. The two residences in Portland, Oregon during the summer, and Charleston, South Carolina during the winter cohousing community, respectively should portray the local exterior vernacular by using local architecture, culture, and materials as a way to bridge and address functional and beautiful design with that of accessible ADA requirements for the interior. The couple wishes for the designers to create an open space suitable for familial and friendly visits, an active lifestyle, and natureinspired look while maintaining a cohesive ohesive bridge between traditional and modern design.

Light a Distant Fire by Lucia books and items that may be St. Clair Robson, a historical novel documenting and fictionalizing the story of the Second Seminole War, was used as inspiration for the creation of the cardboard bookshelf. Specifically chosen by a teacher at a local K-12, the bookshelf is inspired by and constructed to resemble the Florida State University Seminole spear, one which would later be integrated into the classroom for sixth and twelfth graders. AutoCAD was used to create measurements for the bookcase; however, the design scenario was meant to inspire and expand the knowledge of furniture modeling. Standing at 4 feet and 6 inches tall and 18 inches deep, the bookshelf can be used to hold a variety of

brought in throughout the day.

The creation of the bookshelf was interesting as it was the first project in which a real client was introduced for a school project. As a designer, I had to visit the classroom and determine which area of the room would best hold the bookshelf and conclude the appropriate size size.. Overall, I was able to gain skills in model building with the use of cardboard and knowledge in furniture structural components such as struts and joinery.

Throughout the course of its creations, I was able to get a better understanding of how flooring materials influences acoustic changes throughout spaces, the International Building Code applications, and HVAC, sprinkler system, and motion sensor placement units in reflected ceiling plans.

Created throughout the Construction Systems and Construction Documents courses at Florida State University, the Argonaut Office Interior Build-Out was created with the use of the International nternational Building Code. Being the first of many projects using Revit, the program was used to get a deeper understanding of finalized sheet sets and actual construction documentation of a new build. The main goal for this project was to design an office interior that would allow staff to mingle and work by providing access ccess to daylight, effective circulation, and acoustics. Throughout the first two years in the Interior Architecture + Design program, the Graphics I and Graphics II courses allowed for an emphasis on hand rendering before computer-aided design.

Renderings from these courses consisted of Prismacolor marker, Prismacolor colored pencils, and Copic pens to create realistic versions of existing spaces, furniture, and fixtures. These courses allowed for an in-depth study on light, ight, shade, shadow, and general composition which would later help in computer rendering.

Due to these courses, I am confident in rendering materials realistically and quickly to get the simulation across to a client or peers. The image directly to the right is a rendered reproduction meant to focus on realistically rendering a space while determining our rendering style. The images

to the top corner of the following page show material simulations used to get a better understanding of a variety of different materials within a room or image. This exercise was able to help me better understand the structure of rendering which includes a quick sketch layer, black and white layer, and final marker and colored pencil rendering on top. The image to the bottom right of the following page shows a perspective from an educational design project in which the Special Collections area of the Florida State University Strozier Library was remodeled.

Being from Lima, Peru and having lived in Jacksonville, Florida for most of my life, I am consumed by curiosity about our built environment, our place in it, and the lens through which we view the world. Becoming fully-engaged in our studies at Florida State University about the history of our craft, the rendering process, and the personal connections needed to make any space a home is what drives me to continue to design for the future.

The past few years in the interior design program has taught me so much about our role as (future!) designers and has been nothing short of amazing. It astonishes me how our ideas affect the past, present, and future of businesses, leaders, communities, and more. Previous construction methods have also taught me how we can dig deeper and truly find more innovative ways to sustain a unique and delightful atmosphere.

I believe it is our responsibility to use our education to provide for communities and its residents, providing a holistic balance for those who may not be able to find it themselves. I believe our efforts will allow the future to continue to grow strong towards a more sustainable, cohesive, and amiable world. It is not enough to design a creative structure but to find innovative ways in which every consumer is thought of, represented, and fully-immersed.

I once heard that if you are the smartest person in the room, then you are in the wrong room. I intend to stick to this saying as I would love to continue to learn in the field, university, internships, and work someday. Teaching at one point in my life would be the ultimate goal, but learning as much as I can is what I aspire to do!
