01 Vez River Spa OF ROOT & RIVER : A Sanctuary of Erosion, Community & Healing waters

Team: Alejandra Gómez, Michelle Marquez, Emily Morales Competition advisor: Matt Fajkus Summer 2025 Vilela,Portugal Nestled along the bank of Portugal’s River Vez, the spa emerges as a fluid extension of the landscape, shaped by the gentle movement of water and the timeless rituals of bathing and wellness. The architecture draws directly from the river’s natural currents, translating its meandering flow into a sequence of intimate and public spaces that guide visitors through moments of solitude, cleansing, and sensory immersion. Inspired by the fluidity of wayfinding, the design reinterprets the spa’s role in creating an intimate progression of thermal experiences within an open, nature-connected context. Local Portuguese limestone and natural living walls are used as an expression of interconnectedness in both solid and porous forms. The design plays with opacity, weight, and permeability to create a dynamic threshold between interior and exterior, built and natural.

02 Part + Parcel Mixed Use Residential Housing Project

Individual Project Horizontal Studio: Matt Fajkus Spring 2024 Austin, Texas This four-story residential building across from Lady Bird Lake is inspired by the creation of several aggregations and is located in central Austin. The design is based on a deconstucted geometric grid, that shifts horizontally creating distinct interior and exterior boundry conditions. These shifting forms are complemented by terraces and green niches, which enhance the building’s connection to the natural environment. The unit layouts focus on optimizing space and light while maintaining privacy and openness. The overall composition of the building integrates these individual units into a cohesive form, with a strong emphasis on incorporating green spaces and communal areas.

03 Bicho Preforming Arts Center

Teammate: Alejandra Gómez Integrative Studio: Matt Fajkus Fall 2025 Austin, TX This project proposes a Performing Arts Center in downtown Austin organized around continuity, carving, and connection. Functioning as a monumental object within the city, the building is conceived as a continuous, inhabitable form connecting performance, education, public space, and everyday urban life. Named Bicho, the project draws inspiration from Brazilian artist Lygia Clark’s participatory hinged sculptures, which fold, rotate, and transform through interaction with the body. This idea informs the building’s continuous envelope, which folds and shifts across the site to create moments of compression, release, and engagement. Continuity connects performance, learning, and public spaces through movement, while carving opens the building to the city through plazas, terraces, courtyards, and visual connections. Ultimately, Bicho creates a responsive environment where architecture, movement, and interaction connect the Performing Arts Center to downtown Austin and its community. 22

04 Rideshare Parking Garage Renovation Individual Project Vertical Studio: Cisco Gomes Fall 2024 Austin, Texas This project is the renovation of the existing CONRAC parking garage and rideshare area at Austin-Bergstrom Airport. The design emphasizes the addition of a linear pathway with porous diffusion into the building with multiple entrances along the south side of the building.

Key features include a courtyard with criss-crossing skywalks and a viewing lobby. The façade of the new pathway is aggregated with steel fins that create unique lighting conditions along the length of this enhanced circulation route. This transformation not only improves wayfinding and passenger experience but also redefines the garage as an architectural gateway to the airport.

05 Centro Sociale Community Center

Team: Judith Ipina & Hunter Hellinger Advanced Studio: Smilja Milovanovic-Bertram Spring 2025 Fiesole, Italy On an Italian mountainside, an olive orchard sets the stage for a new community center, amphitheater, and park. Inspired by ancient terracing and the heritage of Fiesole, the design revives a neglected landscape, restoring the vision of a cared-for hillside. This is a project of renewal, realigning with tradition through layered terraces that support both land and experience. The building sits within these terraces, forming accessible, flat spaces for wandering.

Extending into the landscape, the terraces create thresholds and views that invite exploration. Defined by use over precision, the site encourages reflection on tradition, care, and the quiet joy of getting lost among olive trees. 34
