About CCYA Charm City Youth Athletics (CCYA) is a citywide initiative dedicated to breaking down systemic barriers to athletic participation, especially for students in middle school. By investing in community-centered sports infrastructure, CCYA aims to establish a sustainable model that reaches every corner of Baltimore and every student who desires to participate in sports.

Our 2030 Goal By 2030, CCYA aims for 63% of all middle school students in Baltimore City to actively participate in school sports. Participation in sports strengthens physical wellness, school engagement, leadership skills, and community pride.

Beyond Competition: Connection, Belonging, Opportunity CCYA is more than just athletics—it’s about fostering connection, belonging, and opportunity. Sports serve as a platform for youth development, leadership cultivation, and community building.

Collaboration for Youth Empowerment This initiative is a partnership between Baltimore Children & Youth Fund (BCYF) and Baltimore City Public Schools (BCPS), reflecting a shared commitment to youth empowerment. Youth Leadership through the CCYA Council A youth-led CCYA Council empowers young people to have a direct voice in shaping sports in Baltimore. Council members provide ongoing advocacy, insights, and guidance on program implementation and community impact.

Baltimore Rowing Club Mission, Vision, Values We envision a Baltimore where access to the water, and the transformative sport of rowing, is available to everyone. We break down barriers for Baltimore City Public School students by providing fee-free programming, scholarships, in-classroom learn-to-row instruction, boathouse field trips, and youth development opportunities in athletics leadership and administration, while building a welcoming, equitable boathouse grounded in diversity, inclusion, student leadership, and community.

Organization Summary Baltimore Community Rowing (BCR) promotes rowing for fitness, competition, and recreation through programs serving middle school, high school, and adult athletes. As a lifelong sport, rowing at BCR spans ages 12 through the mid-80s, and for student-athletes the pathway begins as early as middle school through learn-to-row, developmental squads, and competitive team opportunities. For 14 years, BCR has partnered with Baltimore City Schools to expand access through scholarships, fee-free programming, and YouthWorks summer jobs, reflecting a long-standing commitment to affordability, diversity, and inclusion. That commitment led to a formal partnership with City Schools in 2024, establishing rowing as a district-sponsored middle school sport. Led by a full-time Youth Outreach Coordinator, BCR connects schools to the boathouse, recruits and retains athletes, and builds pathways into middle and high school teams. Studentathletes train year-round (3–5 times per week), develop water safety and fitness, and travel to regattas that broaden experiences and strengthen community.

Boathouse Field Trip Program Description Program Type Off-site field trip Sport/Activity Focus Rowing Brief Description Baltimore City middle school students can experience rowing through a boathouse field trip at the Baltimore Rowing & Water Resource Center in Middle Branch Park.

Visits can be a follow-up to in-class learn-to-row instruction or a standalone experience. Students tour the facility, learn about available programs, practice on Concept2 rowing machines, review water safety, play rowing games, and finish with on-dock instruction in rowing shells and boat-handling skills. No swimming experience is required, and life jackets are provided. The 2.5-hour experience is led by two certified BCR coaches with additional instructors as needed, and schools may bring food for a picnic afterward.

Program Goals/Outcomes Team building, respect, perseverance are emphasized in all instruction.

Logistics & Delivery Grade/Age Range Served 6th-8th Grade Program Duration/Format One-day. After a welcoming activity and icebreaker, students will be divided into 34 groups of about 10-12 students each. Groups will rotate through 3-4 stations including a boathouse tour; introduction to the rowing shell and equipment and introduction to boat handling, rowing vocabulary relays, rowing instruction on the Concept2 RowErgs, and introduction to on-water rowing at the docks. BCR coaches will manage the distribution and adjustment of personal floatation devices before students do any activity near the water. Students will get the opportunity to sit in a boat at the dock, receive instruction on how to row in the boat, and take some strokes on the water. The boats will remain at the dock under the supervision of BCR coaches. Schools may choose to provide and plan for a picnic lunch in the park at the conclusion of the rowing activity. BCR will staff the boathouse for access to restrooms for up to one hour after the conclusion of rowing activities.

Classroom Learn-to-Row Instruction Program Description Program Type Workshop Sport/Activity Focus Rowing Brief Description This one-day (or multi-day) program introduces students to rowing through interactive presentations and hands-on instruction with Concept2 RowErgs led by two certified rowing coaches. Students learn proper stroke mechanics, power application, and how to use the monitor to track effort, ending with a short RowErg race to practice skills. For multi-day instruction, schools must provide secure overnight storage for the RowErgs; BCR staff handle transport, setup, breakdown, and follow-up data collection.

Program Goals/Outcomes The goal of Classroom Learn-to-Row instruction is to introduce students to the sport of rowing in a familiar environment and provide them with a new athletic experience focused on teamwork, skill building, and cardiovascular fitness.

Logistics & Delivery Grade/Age Range Served 6th-8th Grade Program Duration/Format One-day/multi-day. Two certified rowing coaches will provide an introduction to the sport of rowing using slideshows, engaging and interactive presentations, and demonstration on the rowing machine. The coaches will then work with groups of up to 10 students to teach the rowing stroke using the Concept2 RowErg. Students will learn about proper stroke mechanics, power application, and how to use the monitor to determine personal effort. The day will wrap up with a short race on the RowErg to practice their rowing skills. Schools wishing for BCR to instruct multiple days must be able to provide secure overnight storage for the RowErgs. At the conclusion of the instruction, BCR staff will disassemble the RowErgs for travel, transport them, and reassemble them on-site at the boathouse. BCR staff will follow up after the visit to obtain and organize the needed data.

BCR staff will secure a U-Haul, load and transport up to 10 Concept 2 RowErgs (rowing machines) to the school. Rowing machines will be disassembled for travel, transported, assembled, and set up in the allotted classroom space by BCR staff. Two certified rowing coaches will provide an introduction to the sport of rowing using slideshows, engaging and interactive presentations, and a demonstration on the rowing machine.

Baltimore Community Rowing Middle School Rowing Team Program Description Program Type Team/Club Sport/Activity Focus Rowing Brief Description The Baltimore Community Rowing Middle School program is open to 6th through 8th grade students from Baltimore City Public Schools and is centered around improving each student’s personal fitness and introducing the skills, vocabulary, and mechanics needed to learn the Olympic sport of rowing. Training will include a well-rounded introduction to the competitive sport with a development focus and will include time on the erg (rowing machine), circuit training, running, boat handling skills, and on-water rowing. Emphasis is on each student’s personal athletic development, skills acquisition, and character development while learning the resilience, discipline, and personal leadership skills needed to positively contribute to a team.

Program Goals/Outcomes Middle school rowers will learn the fitness and skills needed to advance to the High School Team in 9th grade if they so choose.

Logistics & Delivery Grade/Age Range Served 6th-8th Grade Program Duration/Format Multi-week, seasonal, ongoing. Certified BCR coaches provide instruction on both land and water. Activities include team building, games, rowing instruction on the Concept2 RowErg, running, bodyweight exercises to build strength and flexibility, and on-water rowing instruction. Most activities will occur outdoors.

Session Length 2.25 hours. Students participate in a 7-week season this spring with practices Monday/Wednesday/Friday, 4:30-6:15 PM.

Baltimore SquashWise Mission, Vision, Values We envision a Baltimore where all young people are part of a team, where they play, learn, and grow together into the future leaders of our community. We partner with Baltimore’s youth and families to advance equity in squash, education, and personal development, grounded in the values of teamwork, growth, and youth agency.

Organization Summary Founded in 2007, SquashWise creates intergenerational impact for Baltimoreans by using the racquet sport of squash alongside educational enrichment and community-building opportunities. The organization began with just 14 students in an after-school youth development program and has grown substantially over time. Today, SquashWise serves approximately 500 Baltimore City Public School youth and 100 adults each year through a range of youth and community programs. SquashWise has remained resilient through major transitions, including the closure of a long-time facility partner and the move to a temporary operating site—continuing to deliver consistent programming despite changing circumstances. To expand access and deepen impact, SquashWise is renovating the former Greyhound bus terminal in the heart of Baltimore City into the new SquashWise Center. Anticipated to open by January 2026, the SquashWise Center will be a dedicated 6-court, 3-classroom youth and community hub designed to support even more Baltimoreans through sport, learning, and connection.

SquashWise PE Clinics Program Description Program Type Club Sport/Activity Focus Squash Brief Description SquashWise staff lead students through various stations that teach them the basics of squash and support team-building. PE clinics are introductory in nature; they emphasize fun and connection.

SquashWise Youth Development Program Program Description Program Type Club Sport/Activity Focus Squash Brief Description This program prepares middle school students from City Schools to succeed in school and in life, through an innovative combination of squash coaching and competition with academic skill-building, college and career readiness, and mentoring.

Program Goals/Outcomes SquashWise tracks progress towards the following goals and annual outcomes.

We utilize a comprehensive Salesforce database as well as the Hello Insight survey, a research-based tool that identifies a set of social-emotional learning and academic capacities that are proven to promote students’ long-term academic success, college and career readiness, and overall well-being.

Annual outcome: 80% of 8th-grade students will be admitted to high schools with entry criteria. Improve or maintain competitive grades in school; Annual outcome: 80% of middle school students will have at least a B average.

Develop healthy competition skills through squash and an appreciation for the sport and physical activity.

Annual outcome: 80% of middle school students will compete in at least two competitive squash matches and/or tournaments. Exercise healthy decisionmaking and lifestyle choices; Annual outcome: 80% of middle school students will show growth in socialemotional development as measured by the Hello Insight survey. SquashWise Field Trips Program Description Program Type Field Trip Sport/Activity Focus Squash Brief Description School field trips will be one of many new programs at the SquashWise Center.

Field trips will be similar to PE clinics, but they will take place on the courts at our new facility. Just like a class may visit the aquarium or zoo, we hope that SquashWise can serve as a unique field trip site. Trips can include not only squash, but also fitness, classroom activities, and potentially, partnerships with museums and cultural attractions in the neighborhood.

Baltimore Urban Baseball Association Mission, Vision, Values We envision a Baltimore where every young person, regardless of zip code, race, or income, has year-round access to free, high-quality sports training, mentorship, and career development rooted in community. We train and mentor youth ages 6–24 through baseball and softball, equipping them with life skills, educational support, and workforce readiness to thrive beyond the field, centered on racial equity, consistency, community access, and intergenerational mentorship.

Organization Summary The Baltimore Urban Baseball Association (BUBA) began in 2016 with just two students at Digital Harbor High School and a bold goal: to make elite-level baseball and softball training accessible to all. Since then, BUBA has grown into a citywide resource serving more than 400 youth annually and operating America’s first free baseball/softball training facility in South Baltimore. Early momentum included major local support, such as a Baltimore Children & Youth Fund grant in 2018 and backing from partners like the Baltimore Orioles and MLB All-Star Adam Jones. By 2020, BUBA established its first dedicated facility through a multi-year partnership, expanding beyond training to offer its signature LAB Sessions—life skills, academic readiness, and career exploration workshops that reinforce mentorship and workforce development. In recent years, BUBA has continued to attract high-profile supporters across professional sports, while deepening its commitment to being a full-circle development hub. With the facility’s 2024 acquisition by The Diamond Collective, BUBA secured a permanent home to sustain its impact for generations—on and off the field.

Beat the Streets - Baltimore Mission, Vision, Values We envision a Baltimore where young people have access to safe, structured learning environments that challenge them to grow academically, physically, and personally, and where consistent support helps every student build the confidence to succeed in school, sports, and life. Guided by discipline, integrity, and effort, we close opportunity gaps through a holistic, year-round model that integrates academic acceleration, mentorship, mental wellness, and the character-building discipline of wrestling, while expanding access to STEM, AI, and global learning so youth are prepared for college, careers, and life.

Organization Summary Beat the Streets Baltimore (BTSB) was founded in 2012 to use wrestling as a vehicle to transform the lives of youth in Baltimore City. What began as a single program site serving fewer than 25 students has grown into a citywide effort that has reached more than 4,000 student-athletes across schools and community centers. Organization Summary Blax Lax was co-founded in 2002 by Lloyd Carter and Anthony “Merc” Ryan, former teammates at Edmondson High School and Morgan State University, where they played on the historic “10 Bears,” the first NCAA program to establish a predominantly African American lacrosse team. Organization Summary Natural Born Champions (NBC) was founded in 2012 by Markia Beckwith when she was just 18 years old. Seeing that young people in her Baltimore neighborhood needed a safe, supportive place after school, she opened the basement of her parents’ home to provide homework help, healthy meals, enriching experiences like out-of-state field trips (including visits to the African American Museum in Washington, DC), and sports and recreation—launching what began as a grassroots summer enrichment program. We enrich the lives of youth and young adults through marching arts and youth development while providing cultural engagement for our local community and audiences worldwide, centering excellence through expression, empowerment through education, community through connection, and character through challenge.

Organization Summary In 2001, founder Dennis Lee returned from the Coast Guard to Baltimore and began teaching percussion at Baltimore City College High School. Hoping to help his younger brother earn a college music scholarship, Dennis started offering extra lessons after band practice in City’s band room. What began as a few students staying late for additional instruction quickly grew into a dedicated community of young people committed to marching arts, performance, and personal growth. On June 20, 2006, The Marching Elite was officially founded.

From humble beginnings in school band rooms, recreation centers, and parks, the program expanded to serve youth from across Baltimore City—many traveling up to an hour for weekly lessons. Known for its high-energy drumline, Elite has grown to include a competitive dance team, wind ensemble, and a junior program, the Academy. Remaining low-to-no cost, The Marching Elite now serves 70+ youth annually, including through its summer program, The Elite Experience, helping participants build technical skill, confidence, and pathways to college and careers.

HBCU Band Dance Workshop Program Description Program Type Workshop Sport/Activity Focus Dance Brief Description The Marching Elite will deliver a 3-hour workshop introducing 30 middle school girls to the style and technique of historically black college and university (HBCU) band dance teams. Participants will learn beginner-friendly majorette routines while developing foundational skills in proper body movement, safe stretching techniques, and strength building for dancers. The workshop creates a culturally affirming space where youth can connect with African-American dance traditions, express themselves creatively, and build community with peers through synchronized movement and collective learning.

Program Goals/Outcomes Increased self-confidence: Youth will demonstrate greater confidence in their physical abilities and willingness to perform in front of others. Skill development: Participants will learn new dance techniques and routines, expanding their movement vocabulary and physical capabilities. Stress reduction and joy: Youth will experience decreased stress levels and increased feelings of happiness and well-being through physical activity and creative expression. Cultural connection: Participants will gain knowledge of HBCU traditions and the cultural significance of majorette dance in African-American communities. Physical wellness: Youth will understand and practice proper stretching, body alignment, and strength-building techniques that support healthy, sustainable dance practice.

Students will be divided into two rotating groups, with each group experiencing both the dance and drumline components during the workshop. Dance participants will learn beginner-friendly majorette routines while developing foundational skills in proper body movement, safe stretching techniques, and strength building for dancers. Drumline participants will learn beginner-friendly cadences and choreography while developing foundational skills in proper playing techniques, stick control, body movement, and strength building for percussionists.

The workshop creates a culturally affirming space where youth can connect with African-American music and dance traditions, express themselves creatively, and build community with peers through synchronized performance and collective learning. The combined format allows students to experience the full spectrum of HBCU band culture, understanding how dancers and drummers work together to create powerful performances. The session culminates in a mini-showcase where both groups perform together, mirroring the authentic HBCU experience.

We build this community by creating year-round inclusive leagues, tournaments, and after-school sport and fitness opportunities for LGBTQ+ and allied youth ages 5–18, centering fun, confidence, and transferable life skills that help young people become assertive, creative, innovative, visible, and team-oriented leaders on and off the field.

Organization Summary Founded in Baltimore in June 2020, Unmatched Athlete began as a small initiative to create safe, affirming athletic spaces for LGBTQ+ youth and address the gap in sports programs that fully welcome all identities. What started as a single soccer clinic has grown into a diverse slate of offerings—basketball, flag football, volleyball, ultimate frisbee, climbing, and multi-sport field days—centered on physical activity, mentorship, and youth leadership. As demand increased, Unmatched Athlete built partnerships with schools, community centers, and local athletic facilities to expand access across the I-95 corridor, including Baltimore, Howard, Montgomery, and Prince George’s Counties. Beyond sports skills, programs emphasize peer connection, social-emotional development, and leadership, helping participants build teamwork, resilience, and confidence that carry into school and everyday life. Staff, coaches, and volunteers are trained in trauma-informed care, youth development, and safe sport practices to ensure every young person can participate, belong, and thrive.

Set the Vibe Volleyball Clinic Program Description Program Type Workshop/Clinic Sport/Activity Focus Volleyball Brief Description This is a 3 day introductory and skill-building volleyball clinic for Gender Sexuality Alliance (GSA) club students and allies for a middle or high school in Baltimore City focused on learning fundamental skills in a supportive, inclusive, and affirming environment. The clinic emphasizes teamwork, positive communication, and fun over strict competition, making it welcoming for all skill levels, especially beginners.

Program Goals/Outcomes Develop basic volleyball skills (serving, passing, setting, hitting), foster teamwork and positive communication, promote physical activity and healthy habits, and build a sense of community and belonging among GSA and allied students.
