Hello and welcome to the latest edition of The Alea Journal

In this issue we are as usual diving right into the opportunities presented by our rapdily changing world

We may not always know how things will turn out, but as entrepreneurs and leaders we take the plunge with optimism and all the expertise we can find.

This includes the sometimes thorny issue of artificial intelligence and how this may develop to influence our daily lives – not just at work but elsewhere too

We also look at the rising powers of Russia China and the Gulf region and prepare for an international upheaval which could see them as our global leading forces

At the same time, we look at increasing our stability by following the latest developments in supply chain innovation and comparing unicorn investments to slower growing camel alternatives

In cultural news we explore Italy's efforts to retain its food heritage; the

enduring appeal of Damascus; and the baffling trend of a yoga lifestyle with no connection to yoga

Artificial intelligence otherwise known as AI is becoming increasingly influential in many areas of our daily lives

If you ’ re talking to a chatbot to get support on a company ’ s website browsing content recommended for you on social media or using a smart home device, you ’ re already relying on AI to make decisions for you and take care of things that would otherwise take up your time

Sometimes called machine learning AI ‘learns’ from the information fed into it over time. Every interaction you have with an AI-powered service tells that service more about who you are and what you want from it This means you get a version of a product or service that is uniquely tailored to you, giving you a speedier and more accurate experience

But artificial intelligence does have many detractors, and among them are some of the most intelligent people on the planet Their warnings and concerns about AI may come to nothing, but if there are real risks we may be heading for a point of no return when it comes to avoiding them.

So let’s look at some of the pros and cons of AI and explore whether it s a benefit or a threat

The pros

AI speeds things up It takes less time to perform tasks than humans, and can perform multiple functions at once

From a consumer and a business point of view this is a big plus cutting waiting time and costs

There’s no need for AI to take a break or shut down overnight AI-operated systems can run 24/7 with no interruption in service

Again this presents advantages both to customers and to businesses

AI can help people with disabilities to perform tasks that able-bodied people can do without issues AI can learn from each individual and become adept at helping perform tasks with greater speed and accuracy every time

Versatility is a core benefit of AI, it can play a part in such a huge range of industries that there are arguably very few sectors that couldn’t find a use for it.

The cons

Not every function performed by AI is viewed as an appropriate use of the technology Anything that requires human creativity or empathy is arguably left lacking when AI performs the task instead of a human This includes art and one-to-one chat as well as anything requiring the kind of lateral thinking that only a human would be able to do

AI is not creative in any real sense and is incapable of performing the kind of creative thinking tasks that humans can This makes artists particularly wary of AI taking over the work of artists – who argue that not only is AI depriving artists of a living but also creating art that has no humanity and should not be classed as art

That said, humans are ultimately the source of AI, as each AI must be programmed by humans – both initially and as it learns This brings its own disadvantages in that human bias inevitably makes its way into AI software and can cause problems for users

The future capabilities of AI are not fully known, and there are fears that it could become impossible for us to control taking over parts of our lives in dangerous ways Added to the aforementioned biases this could be a recipe for disaster for many users

At present, the legal regulation around AI is unclear, and at the same time AI is gathering more and more information about each of us as we continue to interact with it From a privacy and safety point of view, this means it’s a growing concern for many academics, politicians, scientists and consumers

There’s a huge push for sustainability in farming around the world, with plant and even insectbased diets being touted as the answer to our climate woes If we can wean ourselves off meat en masse so the theory goes we will cut out some of the most resource-intensive and pollutive elements of factory farming and have a significant impact on climate change

As part of this push consumers have been introduced to the idea of lab-grown meat. Once simply a strange and dystopian concept, fake meat is now available on supermarket shelves everywhere and is being advertised on TV, online and on billboards alongside our familiar food products

It’s likely that the meat-eaters among us will always prefer the real thing, while vegetarians who miss their meat hit will be the majority of people choosing the synthetic versions If you ’ re seeking meat nothing but the real thing will satisfy

The Government of Italy is in agreement, it seems, and has taken the bold step of backing a bill to ban fake meat from the country altogether It’s not that they want to destroy the planet but rather they argue that preserving their food heritage is a worthwhile price to pay for the pushback against factory-created meat alternatives

Food is a huge part of Italy’s cultural heritage with Italian dishes incredibly popular all over the world Farmers and other agricultural organisations have fought against the fake meat trend with a petition of half a million signatures –including Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni – calling for a ban on synthetic food and the protection of natural produce.

If the bill goes into effect, anyone producing and selling fake food could be fined up to €60,000 This follows a call for the banning of flour made from insects which could otherwise have made its way into pizza and pasta production.

Yoga as a spiritual practice is so very old

And by that I don’t just mean that it has its roots in the Vedic period of ancient India, influenced the very beginnings of budding Buddhism, and has held deep significance for millions of people for generations

No I mean yoga as a spiritual practice is old news In fact if you still think it’s even as much as a physical exercise regime, I hate to inform you that you ’ re way behind the times It’s ok though, this guide will help you to master the latest iteration: noga

By 2023 yoga in the Western world is you know more of a vibe It’s a sort of idea of something you might be about to do at some point, but never actually do Yet despite never actually doing yoga, you can still live that yoga life, and seem like the sort of person who does yoga Welcome to noga or 'no yoga', if you must use its full title

So let’s look at all the things you can do that are yoga, without – and I cannot stress this enough – ever actually doing any yoga

Find the backdrops

Picture a beautiful beach at sunrise, not a soul around, a calm ocean lapping lazily at the shore Some might say this is the perfect setting in which to use your body to make a series of physically demanding shapes that concentrate your mind into a meditative state, while connecting you with nature and calming your soul

But that would be yoga so you ’ re not doing that Instead just take a photo in your best ‘namaste’ post and let Instagram imagine the rest Congratulations, you just did Noga

Noga is also the perfect activity should you find yourself in the mountains at a hippy music festival in the desert, in the forest, by a lake, or on the balcony of a luxury hotel The only thing that matters is that you document the setting, with you in it, looking as though you may be about to/may just have done some yoga

Dress the part

Yoga pants (the clue is in the name) are a key wardrobe staple for women the world over There are very expensive brands you can wear to hint to strangers that you must do all your yoga at luxurious locations But you do not; firstly because you never do yoga and secondly because you cannot afford to go to luxury locations, because you have spent all your money on expensive yoga pants

But pretending to be the sort of person who does yoga is actually a very economically accessible passtime and there are yoga pants to be found at general clothing stores to suit every budget Social media is full of women in yoga pants talking about how great their yoga pants make them look, and then trying to sell you those same yoga pants (#ad) but these women are never, ever doing yoga Ever And neither are you you just wear the pants Noga

Cropped baggy hoodies are another Noga trend that says hey, I’m kind of chilly at the moment, because I haven’t warmed up by doing my yoga yet, but I m just about to start doing yoga ’ You will never take the hoodie off, because you will never warm up because you will never start doing yoga because you do not do any yoga.

Headbands, too, hint heavily that you need to keep your hair out of your eyes while doing some yoga These headbands will stay on your head all day and keep your hair out of your eyes for a huge range of activities such as cleaning your teeth in the morning, driving to work, getting lunch, grocery shopping, making dinner, watching TV, and cleaning your teeth before bed What they will never ever do is keep your hair out of your eyes while doing any yoga You know why? Because you never do any yoga

Get the accessories

If you ’ re going to do yoga regularly you ’ re going to need the kind of bag that s roomy enough to hold a change of clothes, a towel and a rolled-up yoga mat, and is comfortable enough to carry around Equally if you ’ re regularly not doing any yoga, you ’ re also going to need this kind of bag, just so you look like the kind of person who does yoga

It’s also extremely important that you carry around a gigantic reusable water bottle at all times This must remain in your hand and must be constantly sipped on Doing yoga is thirsty work, and so is not doing yoga

Eat right

Nothing says ‘I’m on my way to yoga ’ like a healthy smoothie full of fruit and vegetables You must not under any circumstances make this smoothie yourself; instead this smoothie must be sold to you at a price for which you could buy all the raw ingredients five times over This is because you are far too busy to make smoothies yourself at home, because you are always on the go, because you are on your way to yoga I must remind you, however, that you never actually make it to yoga

And nothing says ‘I’m on my way home from yoga ’ like calling into a very high end health

food store to buy the kind of raw ingredients that make it look like you ’ re about to feed a small petting zoo full of fussy eaters

What you ’ re actually going to do with these ingredients is put them in your fridge and occasionally look at them every time you open the fridge door to reach for something more appetising What you have bought is not groceries but an art installation that will gradually go off

Oh, and you never made it to yoga Namastayathome instead
