George Smith is elected as the new President of the Union George Smith of the Durham Branch has been elected as the new President of the CIU following the election held in December.

Mr Smith, who previously served on the Union’s NEC for a number of years and is the current Branch Secretary for Durham, won 57 per cent of the vote to win the election against his two rivals for the position, George Dawson CMD and John Wood.

In total, two of the 12 NEC districts were contested in the election – District 4 and District 5.

The election for District 4 (York City/Leeds/Wakefield and Doncaster) saw incumbent NEC Member and Doncaster Branch Secretary Dave Gravel CMD achieving 73 per cent of the vote to beat Leeds Branch Secretary Glenn Doyle.

In District 5 (West Yorkshire/Heavy Woollen and South Yorkshire), incumbent NEC Member, Heavy Woollen Branch Secretary Les Hepworth CMD, polled 47 per cent of the vote against rivals Mark Fergusson and Philip Larkin CMD. All the remaining NEC seats were unopposed, including the Durham

Branch District seat formerly occupied by the new President and now filled by Stephen Foster CMD, who has previously served on the NEC. Geoff Whewell, President of West Midlands Branch, was also returned unopposed in the position of Union Vice-President while the incumbent NEC Members in the other nine uncontested districts will also continue in their roles for the period of 20202021.

A number of dates have been announced for the Award in Club Management (ACM) courses for the first few months of 2020.

The ACM, developed by the Union’s Education Committee and launched in 2018, consists of three self-contained units, each taking one day of classroom-based study to complete.

RUGBY TONIGHT Club Rugbyholds ‘audience takeover’ of BT Sport’s popular midweek magazine show, Rugby Tonight with a huge turnout of teams from all over the country, including teams from various strands of the Armed Services.

Readers arrive at the BT Sport studios in Stratford, London, where they are invited into the green room to have a few drinks, a bite to eat and enjoy some rugby chat ahead of the live broadcast which was to go on air at its usual time of 8pm.

Newport Rugby Club is on the up and up.

Membership is on the increase and the club prides itself on being a caring, family friendl y venue. It focuses on reaching out to the community and, with a 70th year anniver sary coming up, is plannin g an open day with activities for all the family. The club double s up as a nursery during the day, thereby getting youngsters involved from a young age and ‘signed up’ as membe rs, with the parents gaining a ‘default membe rship.’ It holds lunches for the membership on Saturdays prior to games and fundraises for local causes.

The Club & Institute Union – or CIU – is comprised of nearly 2,000 clubs which have a combined annual turnover in excess of £500 million. We are proud to have been appointed publisher and commercial partner of the CIU. Every month we work with Head Office to produce the association’s much sought-after official magazine Club Journal.

With our commercial hat on, we work to introduce appropriate suppliers to this organisation which works on behalf of its 2,000 member clubs to help them run the best club business that they possibly can. We run the CIU’s Annual Beer & Trades Exhibition, where some 700+ club decision makers attend before the CIU’s AGM. And we’ve extended – and now run – the CIU Racing Club, with discounts secured across the UK’s racecourses. The 2019 Dransfields CIU Charity Raceday, held at Wetherby Racecourse on Saturday, November 16, raised a total of £1,714 for the Union’s Education Programme.

The racecourse and its caterers, CGC Events, each gave a donation of £1 for every CIU member who attended the event, with 857 club men and women enjoying themselves in the CIU Marquee alongside the paddock where they were able to enjoy discounted drinks at the John Smith’s bar and hearty food.

Union General Secretary Kenneth D Green CMD and Vice-President Geoff Whewell accepted a cheque on behalf of the CIU from Wetherby Chief Executive Jonjo Sanderson.

Also attending the event were NEC members Geoff Blakeley CMD, Carol Goddard, Dave Gravel CMD, Les Hepworth CMD, Chris O’Neill CMD and Bob Russell CMD as well as former Union General Secretary Kevin Smyth and, from race sponsor Dransfields, Managing Director

The candidates for the 2020-21 Presidential and National Executive Commitee election have now been finalised.

There are three candidates for the role of President – Durham Branch Secretary George Smith, Wessex Branch Secretary John Wood CMD and West Yorkshire Branch Secretary George Dawson CMD. Club members flocked to the 2019 Dransfields CIU Greyhound Racenight held at Sheffield’s Owlerton Stadium on Tuesday, September 17.

The annual event saw a number of CIU officials in attendance, including General Secretary Kenneth D Green CMD and NEC members John Batchelor and Les Hepworth CMD. There was a total of 14 races on the night and to add to the evening’s excitement, the

Major milestone for Lakeside’s Liz Perry Elizabeth Perry, the Stewardess of The Lakeside Sports & Social Club in Sunderland achieved a major milestone in September when she celebrated 40 years in the role.

Elizabeth, a former England Darts International (pictured above with Club Treasurer Terry Keogh), has been a key factor in the club’s success over the years and has also been a tireless fundraiser for the Guide Dogs For the Blind charity, raising enough money to fund the training of a total of 26 guide dogs.

Club of the Month: Crookes Social Club This month’s Club of the Month is Crookes Social Club in Sheffield.

The club was founded in 1919 and continues to be at the heart of its community with a full entertainment programme, including live music, bowls, snooker and a well-priced bar with a fantastic range of drinks including cask ale.

The club marked its Centenary with a three-day celebration in August.

This is one of the highlights of the CIU’s sporting calendar with clubs from all over the country heading to Yorkshire to enjoy a superb day’s hospitality in the Union’s exclusive CIU Marquee adjacent to the racetrack.

It’s also a bumper day for charity with the event raising over £35,000 for the CIU’s chosen charities since it started at Wetherby in 2006, with both Wetherby Racecourse and their catering partner CGC Events Ltd donating £1 from every CIU package sold.

Jonjo Sanderson, Chief Executive and Clerk of the Course at Wetherby Racecourse, is certainly looking forward to welcoming Union members to the venue in 2019: “Dransfields CIU National Charity Raceday is always a special fixture in the Wetherby calendar and this year is no exception with attendees guaranteed to enjoy some top-class sporting action and hospitality in the CIU Marquee next to the Paddock,” he said.

This month’s Club of the Month is Radford Social Club in Coventry.

Earlier this year, the club marked its centenary with a full week of special celebratory events, including a gala dinner, an inter-club games tournament and a Gin and Prosecco Night.

The club is renowned for its live entertainment and many big names have performed there over the years.

The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has launched a new online portal for mutual societies.

Societies that sign up to the portal will be able to submit applications and annual returns directly to the FCA online, instead of sending them by email or post.

The portal is designed to provide an easier and more convenient way to make applications, and is also expected to improve the annual returns process.

The FCA is encouraging all societies to sign up, if possible, as the portal is designed to provide a faster, easier, more convenient experience for societies.

Societies can enter information directly into the portal instead of having to download forms and save them on a computer.

It is also possible to save a partly completed application and come back to it later.

There will also be less information to enter than with the old FCA forms.

The FCA also says that the portal will give societies better access to their registration documents as societies will be able to simply log in and access recently registered documents.
