George Smith is elected as the new President of the Union George Smith of the Durham Branch has been elected as the new President of the CIU following the election held in December. Mr Smith, who previously served on the Union’s NEC for a number of years and is the current Branch Secretary for Durham, won 57 per cent of the vote to win the election against his two rivals for the position, George Dawson CMD and John Wood. In total, two of the 12 NEC districts were contested in the election – District 4 and District 5. The election for District 4 (York City/Leeds/Wakefield and Doncaster) saw incumbent NEC Member and Doncaster Branch Secretary Dave Gravel CMD achieving 73 per cent of the vote to beat Leeds Branch Secretary Glenn Doyle. In District 5 (West Yorkshire/Heavy Woollen and South Yorkshire), incumbent NEC Member, Heavy Woollen Branch Secretary Les Hepworth CMD, polled 47 per cent of the vote against rivals Mark Fergusson and Philip Larkin CMD. All the remaining NEC seats were unopposed, including the Durham

Branch District seat formerly occupied by the new President and now filled by Stephen Foster CMD, who has previously served on the NEC. Geoff Whewell, President of West Midlands Branch, was also returned unopposed in the position of Union Vice-President while the incumbent NEC Members in the other nine uncontested districts will also continue in their roles for the period of 20202021.

Latest dates announced for ACM day courses
A number of dates have been announced for the Award in Club Management (ACM) courses for the first few months of 2020. The ACM, developed by the Union’s Education Committee and launched in 2018, consists of three self-contained units, each taking one day of classroom-based study to complete. For more information on the ACM, see pages 18-19.
