But on top of instincts, experience and research, most successful people also seek and receive critical guidance along the way.

Maybe it was a parent, coach, friend or teacher who pointed out a natural strength, demonstrated a difficult task or provided that extra push which led toward an (otherwise unrealized) achievement.

The students featured in this issue of FACES all found essential guidance at Albright— whether it was in choosing (or changing) their major, putting together a research project or simply following in the footsteps of an accomplished role model. Guidance, of course, can never replace hard work or academic focus but it can lead you to a more supportive and sometimes surprising path—one on which you can apply your intellect and drive– and witness the results.

But guidance goes beyond big decisions and life-changing milestones. Students at Albright are the kind of people who take initiative.

”

You might say that Katy dove right into college life. “I was comfortable right away. It was like I had a whole new family as soon as I got here,” says the competitive swimmer who met most of the swim team before her first semester even began.

But Katy had one loose end. She had yet to choose a major. As an Alpha Major (for undeclared first- and second-year students) she received an email from Albright instructing her to make an appointment for an interest inventory test followed by counseling at the Career Development Center.

The results surprised and reassured Katy. Marketing made sense for me; so many layers need to come together to have a project be a success.

I love the idea of working with people to ensure that I am doing what I can to help their business succeed. The Alpha program really helped me narrow down my interests,” says Katy.

Oh, and last summer, Katy landed an internship with Madison Marquette, a third party property management company—and she loved it.

“I worked a lot on social networking during my internship. In fact, I set up two events entirely through Facebook. I was immersed in a full blown construction project at a shopping center talking with architects, contractors and managers. I also See what Katy is diving into now... learned how to buy time on the radio and do a marketing budget. My boss and I worked really well www.albright.edu/katyoeste together and it was great experience.”

CLAUDE LOUIS

Class: 2013 Major: Psychology In 10 Years: “Social worker... When I see younger students, I see myself in them and want to help.”

I was really shy.

If it wasn’t for my roommate, I’d still be in my room.

”

Claude sees real-world applications for his psychology classes everywhere.

It’s not that he looks at everyone on campus as a potential walking psychology experiment, but as he trains to be a social worker, he does find himself using his increasing knowledge base to help himself, his friends and colleagues to improve their lives.

“I hope to continue to help people realize how beautiful life is,” says Claude.

“Being kind, compassionate and understanding is the perfect means to living a successful, happy life.”

Claude’s favorite class so far is called “The Non-Violent Warrior,” an elective that explores non-violent methods of conflict resolution. “That class was amazing.

I learned about living conditions all over the world and that peace isn’t a way of thinking but more a way of life,” says Claude. The kind of person who walks his talk, Claude serves Oxfam America at Albright, an organization he calls “peace in action.”

Class: 2013 Major: Biochemistry/Pre-med with a focus on music Favorite Class: “Independent Study in Music”

JESSE GRIEB Jesse learned firsthand about the chemistry of the human body during a rather painful event—a root canal during which he underwent anesthesia. “I think that’s what made me want to be a biochemistry major.”

Now in the pre-med track, Jesse loves the way his Albright professors connect class to life. “I soak up the information like a sponge that way,” says Jesse, who has also found classes where he could nurture his natural musical talent as a concert pianist.

On top of individualized piano instruction, Jesse received permission to use the concert grand at all hours in the Chapel.

Just ask the security guards who’ve become his biggest fans!

“When I play piano it becomes an extension of my feelings in musical form,” says Jesse.

As a pre-med student and an award-winning concert pianist, Jesse found the perfect role model in a former Albright student— Barton Smith, M.D. ‘60. “He’s kept music throughout his life but he’s a doctor too. He’s my inspiration.”

Class: 2012 Major: Fashion/Communications (PR) Favorite Class: “Textiles” with Connie Horaceck, M.F.A.

Jilian Duffy

“

Fashion is your personality on the outside.

”

From the time she laid her eyes on a Barbie doll, Jilian never questioned her ultimate goal—making her mark in the world of fashion. “When someone gets up in the morning, I feel that what they put on will determine how the day continues,” says Jilian. “Clothes tell a story too.”

Yet Jilian wasn’t sure how she would convince her family that fashion would serve her as a pragmatic major. When she heard about Albright College, with a strong liberal arts and business background and found out the College offered a fashion major, Jilian applied right away. “When my mom and I came for a visit, I just fell in love,” says Jilian, a senior with a sparkle in her eye.

Once at Albright, Jilian balanced her fashion major with a co-concentration in communications after some advice from a trusted professor. “Albright really helped me figure out what I wanted to do with my major.”

Class: 2012 Major: Biology/Pre-med/Spanish Favorite Class: “Biomedical Ethics” with Lisa Bellantoni, Ph.D.

In 10 Years: “I see myself as a successful physician. For me, success means patients who trust in my care and keep coming back.”

“I didn’t know that Albright had organ recitals,” Erin’s mother said when her daughter announced where she was headed on a Friday night.

“Oh no, not the musical kind, mom! Stomachs and that sort of thing.

There are pathologists there too!” enthused the biology major and aspiring doctor with an eye on building her own physician’s practice one day.

If you are wondering what an organ recital involves, imagine three tables set up for students to inspect organs at various stages of disease. “That way we can identify what is normal and what is not. It takes us one step closer to diagnosis,” explains Erin.

At Albright, Erin not only found ways to study disease firsthand but the kind of academic guidance (particularly crucial for getting into medical school) that helped her combine a natural scientific curiosity with academic rigor. “It’s a really challenging course of study,” says Erin.

“All my professors make sure that we gain critical thinking skills so that we can make good decisions in the future.”

FITTING IN: “During my first week of classes, I was called home for a family emergency. I was away an entire week. After I got back to my residence hall (just when I started to feel a little lonely), a friend texted me to come to dinner. When I got there, they ponded me! From then on, I began to get my groove back.”

It was Erin’s mother, diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis when Erin was five, who inspired her daughter to pursue a career in healing.

“Through my mom, I have gained qualities that I believe a physician needs such as empathy and compassion.”

Class: 2013 Major: Elementary Education/Psychology BTW: Casey went on an Alternative Spring Break to Costa Rica to work with sea turtles.

I learned that teaching isn’t easy nor is it predictable.

”

An education and psychology major, Casey combines her love of the classroom with a deep interest in the mindset of her students. “I’ve always been interested in helping people and I feel I’ve always had an innate understanding of how humans think.” In fact, Casey has mixed her academic interests in an advanced psychological research project about classroom dynamics. “In my ‘Research Methods’ class, I investigated gender biases in schools. There aren’t many undergraduate programs where you can engage in professional level research.”

As an education major, Casey gained real teaching experience in the classroom in her Early Field Experience, a program during which she worked with a second grade teacher and helped students with their reading and writing (in one writing project, she helped students write directions on how to build a snowman). She also read stories with students and graded their homework.

What inspires Casey most in the classroom? “I loved watching the students learn and grow.

It was very rewarding.”

MICHAEL LAROSA

Class: 2013 Major: ISP – environmental studies, business and sociology Favorite Class: “Environmental Sociology”

An outdoors enthusiast for most of his life, Michael is the kind of student who will go out on a limb for the future. In fact, after he graduates, Michael plans on building an environmentally friendly and sustainable Brewpub/Microbrewery.

That’s one of the main reasons he recently became an Individualized Study Program student, (ISP) an Albright program that will allow him to combine a variety of academic interests such as a business concentration with environmental studies.

“I was able to sit down and plan my entire major with my adviser,” says Michael. “I’m so happy that I’m attending a college that allows me to design my own degree. I also worked with the Career Development Center to get an internship at the Rock Bottom Brewery in King of Prussia, Pa.” The kid who watched Captain Planet religiously and camped, kayaked and rock-climbed with the Scouts is also an award-winning photographer. When he’s not working, shooting or studying, you can find Michael out in the field playing Ultimate Frisbee™ .

Class: 2013 Major: International Business/ Environmental Studies Best Experience: ACRE program

Vince traces his major in international business back to a close-

In 10 Years: “Serving as general manager of an MLS soccer team, while remaining active in Reading socioeconomic issues.”

KEEPING IT LOCAL (AND GREEN): Vince’s ACRE project, “An Investigation into the Poverty and Industrial Trends in Reading,” explored the link between poverty and the decline of the manufacturing industry in Reading. During the course of their research, Vince worked closely with Brian Jennings, Ph.D., a professor of environmental sociology, collecting an enormous amount of demographic and economic data. They also considered green initiatives and structural policies that would fuel the local economy.

“I am definitely not the same student I would have been had I not met Dr. Jennings and done that research.”

JILIAN DUFFY: “Follow your heart and start looking for schools early. I would have made the same decisions, but I really wish I had trusted myself sooner.”

CASEY DILLARD: On a lesson learned during her recent Albright study abroad trip to Costa Rica where Casey helped protect sea turtles: “I truly learned to be more flexible. When things don’t go as planned, you just go with it.”

MICHAEL LAROSA: “Apply for as many scholar- ships as you can. And don’t be afraid to make connections. They make all the difference.”

CLAUDE LOUIS: “Keep an open mind when researching the right school. But then once you make your decision, stick to it.”

JESSE GRIEB: “Try to get involved as much as you can. Remember that when you’re busy, that’s a good thing.”

ERIN KELLEHER: “Please don’t make up goofy email names like ‘cusoon@gmail.com.’ Leave your real name which always gives the best impression.”

VINCE GIORGIO: “Go where you are most comfortable. My parents joke that I came home more when I was further away but at a different college. When I’m at Albright, I don’t feel the need to leave.”
