A HISTORY OF ALBRIGHT COLLEGE

Jacob Albright, after whom the college is named, was a Pennsylvania German evangelical preacher and the founder of the Evangelical Association (later the Evangelical United Brethren Church). Born in 1759 as Johannes Jacob Albrecht, his family changed their name to Albright after his death in 1808.

Albright College dates its beginning to the founding of Union Seminary in 1856. The college was formed by a series of mergers with other institutions of higher learning founded in the 19th century by the Evangelical Association and the United Evangelical Church.

Union Seminary, founded in 1856, and its sister institution, Schuylkill Seminary, founded in 1881, were not theological seminaries, but three-year collegiate institutes. Albright Collegiate Institute was founded in 1895, and became Albright College in Myerstown, Pa., in 1898. Union Seminary was rechartered as Central Pennsylvania College in 1887 and merged with Albright College in 1902. Schuylkill Seminary, located at Albright’s current location on 13th Street, became Schuylkill College in 1923. Schuylkill College and Albright College merged in 1928 as Albright College on the current campus. Albright College is affiliated with the United Methodist Church. The beliefs of the Evangelical Association and the Methodist Church were closely related and in 1968 the Evangelical United Brethren Church and the Methodist Church merged as the United Methodist Church.

OUR MISSION

As a diverse community of learners, we cultivate integrity, curiosity, connection and resilience.

OUR VISION

Albright College endeavors to be an equitable, sustainable, inclusive learning community and a leader in advancing lives in our dynamic world.

HONORIS CAUSA

(trans. “for the sake of honor”)

An honorary degree is conferred in recognition of exemplary scholarship, outstanding creative achievement, or distinguished public service. The credentials of candidates are reviewed by a special committee whose recommendations are approved by the faculty and trustees of the college. Honorary degrees have been awarded by American institutions of higher learning since Harvard conferred the doctor of sacred theology on its president, Increase Mather, in 1692. Most honorary degrees take the form of doctorates, for example, doctor of laws, humane letters, divinity, science, literature, letters or music.

Albright College has conferred honorary degrees upon notable individuals including Nobel Prize winner Phillip Sharp; novelist and Reading native John Updike; pianist André Watts; children’s activist Marian Wright Edelman; African writer and prisoner of conscience Ngugi wa Thiong’o; author and conservationist Jane Goodall; poet and author Maya Angelou; Pennsylvania Governor Edward G. Rendell and the First Lady of Pennsylvania, the Honorable Marjorie O. Rendell; Oscar Arias, Nobel Peace laureate and former president of Costa Rica; author Kathleen Norris; and human rights activist John Prendergast. We are proud to welcome today’s honoree into this society of outstanding individuals.

SENIOR ADDRESS

t aisha n . c harles ’24

Taisha Charles ’24 is a mathematics and psychology co-major from Brooklyn, N.Y. In her time at Albright, she was heavily involved on campus. Holding several on campus jobs, Charles was a tutor and tutor manager for world languages, a resident assistant in Walton, Rockland and Lion Hall, and an admissions fellow covering the social media department. She served as president of the Albright College Dance Team, Math Club, Panhellenic Council, and as a track team captain. She has been a sister of Sigma Kappa, a social sorority, and a member of Psi Chi, the psychology honors society, since her sophomore year. She has also served on the Student Government Association for three years, most recently as the residential life, dining and facilities representative. Charles loved being involved on campus and being an advocate for her fellow college students in multiple capacities. She served as a voice for students in her role as in the President’s Student Advisory Committee, the Board of Trustee Committee, and the General Education Committee.

This overinvolvement in campus affairs aligns with Charles’ passion for fixing things. Since she was young, she has always strived to come into something and leave it better for the person coming after her. This passion is what led to two of the research projects she did in partnership with the Albright Creative Research Experience (ACRE). In a conference she attended for her first ACRE project, Charles and several mathematicians brought up the topic of math education, and how this subject should not be one of the most difficult for students nationally to pass. Her second ACRE project focused on aiding this effort and was done with Northwest Middle School. The research applied psychological tools to help these students understand and perform better in their mathematics class and came back significant enough to provide hope that such tools are helpful towards students. In her third ACRE, Charles focused more on parental-child relations and the intergenerational transmission of corporal punishment. The project asked adults who were not yet parents about their plans for parenting, and hoped to serve in providing a point for earlier intervention to decrease the prevalence of corporal punishment in households. With all this experience, Taisha hopes to work as a consultant, helping companies to be better workplaces for their employees. She has accepted admission into West Chester University’s Master of Science in Psychology program to concentrate in industrial/organizational psychology, and is excited to continue the work she’s done at Albright while pursuing her graduate degree. She leaves Albright with a love for travel, a commitment to learning and a hope for the future. She is excited to see where her Albright education takes her and is prepared to go out into the world as the Lion she has grown to be.

A Berks County native, Olivia Trace Holeva ’24 came to Albright following her older sister, Lauren. As a music industry studies major and religious studies minor, art and faith encompass not only her academic interests, but her life. She is currently the director of worship and communications at Park Road Church in Wyomissing, Pa., and will transition to full-time ministry following graduation. In March of this year, Olivia, alongside Michael Gruber ’24 and Frank Hagen ’23, debuted their band’s self-titled album, “Bad Publicity.” Olivia composed “As I Pray” to address her peers in her most fluent medium: music.

In all cases, the actual awarding of a college degree is subject to verification by the Registrar. Therefore, these exercises are to be considered ceremonial.

THE TRADITION OF ACADEMIC ATTIRE

The caps, gowns and hoods worn at academic functions date from the 12th century when the attire of scholars was that of clerics. European institutions continue to exhibit diversity in their academic attire, but American colleges and universities established a standard for academic dress in 1895. American academic regalia derive primarily from the attire prescribed at Oxford and Cambridge Universities during the reign of Henry VIII in England. The gown for the bachelor’s degree has pointed sleeves; the gown for the master’s degree has an oblong sleeve with the front cut in an arc; and the doctoral gown has a bell-shaped sleeve with three velvet bars and has velvet panels around the neck and down the front.

The hood was originally used as a cape, a cowl and a container for collecting alms. The bachelor’s hood is three feet long with a two-inch velvet border; the master’s is three and one-half feet long with a three-inch border; and the doctor’s is four feet long with a five-inch border. The hoods are lined with the colors of the college or university conferring the degree, and the color of the border indicates the discipline in which the degree was earned.

The traditional square, black “mortarboard” cap is variously said to represent the shape of a scholar’s books, a mason’s mortarboard or the Oxford quadrangle. Tassels are black or a color appropriate to the subject studied, although holders of doctoral degrees may have gold tassels. Soft velvet caps are also often worn by those with doctoral degrees.

THE MACE

The mace was presented to the college community on Founders Day, May 1, 1996, and made its first ceremonial appearance during the 1996 Baccalaureate. The mace is traditionally carried by a senior member of the faculty designated as the honorary marshal, it is a symbol of the sovereignty of Albright College and heralds the beginning of the academic procession.

Carved by Philadelphia-area sculptor James Victor, the 391/2-inch-long mace is crafted from oak and richly stained in walnut. Crowning the mace is a representation of Sylvan Chapel, the oldest building on Albright’s campus, with inlaid bronze crosses symbolic of the college’s United Methodist affiliation. The college seal, in copper, adorns the front and back, and brass plates engraved with the names and dates of Albright’s presidents are placed on the sides.

The tradition of the mace in an academic ceremony is the result of a long evolution. From the 11th to the early 16th centuries, the mace (derived from the French masse) was a wooden club used in hand-to-hand combat. It was common practice for medieval monarchs to be protected by trusted sergeants-at-arms who carried maces. The weapon soon came to be regarded as a royal symbol and often was heavily ornamented with silver and gold including the royal seal and coat-of-arms.

28

THE SEAL

The Albright College seal was first designed and used in 1906. Depicted within the seal’s circle is a symbolic lamp of wisdom, a laurel wreath, and several books. Under the lamp is inscribed “Instit an MDCCCLVI,” (founded in 1856), the date when Albright’s predecessor, Union Seminary, was chartered. Circling the central seal are the words “Albright College Veritas et Justitia,” which translates to “Albright College, truth and justice.” The seal, in medallion form, is worn by the president of the college on all ceremonial occasions.
