Firstly, I want to thank the hundreds of parents and community supporters who rallied to our cause to maintain student access to open space at Gasworks Arts Park. The college couldn’t have done it without you. City of Port Phillip councillors received more than 600 emails after we put out the call, and this, along with the major media coverage we drummed up, made all the difference. This shows the power of a united school community to make the college even better.

Secondly, our newest campus, Studio 120, is set to open in the first week of Term 2. I can tell you that it is looking terrific and is going to be an amazing addition to the school. How many schools can boast their own urban art studio?

We are incredibly fortunate and are going to put it to great use.

Thirdly, I want to reassure you that APC is taking a proactive approach to the issue of sexism and consent that is rocking our wider society at the moment. The college has developed a clear policy based on the 83 DANKS ST ALBERT PARK MELBOURNE VICTORIA

principles of our Charter of Respect, and special assemblies of years 10, 11 and 12 students have been held to outline what this means for them. The assemblies spelt out clearly what sorts of behaviours constitute insulting, bullying and sexually harassing behaviour and what the school is obliged under law to do when complaints are made.

At this important moment in history, which recently saw large scale rallies in the March 4 Justice campaign, APC is determined to be a place of equality and mutual respect between all genders.

And lastly, some big and positive news from APC’s Rowing Academy. Our Year 10 boys remain undefeated this year and recently secured the State Championships title. It’s just one example of the incredible level of dedication being shown by members of our sporting academies.

New Campus set to open From the start of Term 2, our students are going to enjoy their brand new campus at 120 Bay Street. Called Studio 120, it is a first in public education: a dedicated inner city arts studio where students will develop their creative potential and innovation skills in painting, drawing, fabrics, design, makerspace and related disciplines. It’s going to be a place of experimentation.

Chief creative at Six Degrees Architects, Simon O’Brien, took his brief as creating a space modelled on inner city art studios in New York and other places, and we think you will agree the result is stunning. Built by SPACE Builders, the campus has a raw, factory aesthetic, scattered with repurposed industrial artifacts and Australian artworks loaned to us by one of our very generous supporters. It’s yet another great example of how APC has merged with its surroundings to create a new model of community-based schooling by occupying under-utilised real estate. The view from the wall to ceiling windows puts you right in the urban streetscape of busy Port Melbourne.

Victory in Park Campaign A major public campaign by students, parents and community supporters has preserved APC’s right to use open space at Gasworks Arts Park as a recreation area for recess and lunch times.

The college rallied hundreds of parents and residents to defeat a motion from officers of the City of Port Phillip that would have restricted student use of the park to a small, built up corner.

Councillors each received more than 600 emails, after APC put out a call to parents and friends to come to its aid. In the debate in the council chamber, the elected representatives spoke of the extraordinary outpouring of support for the school’s campaign.

The furore spilled out into the mainstream media. Our argument that children needed

access to parkplands for their physical and mental health, especially after the pandemic lockdown, hit a nerve. Our campaign appeared on the front page of The Age, in the HeraldSun, on Channel 7 and Channel 9 news and on 3AW and 774 ABC. The council meeting was addressed by Principal Steven Cook, Assistant Principal Tim Nolan, School Council President Oona Nicolson and student leaders Melisand Box and Pia Martyn. Several community members showed up independently to voice their outrage over the motion and to condemn the misleading campaign by a small and unrepresentative handful of residents who were determined to stop our students sharing the park.

The result was a unanimous vote to extend the school’s use of the space for another year.

The school is delighted with the opportunity to share the park with the community into the future.

Buddy Program 2021 On Wednesday 3 March, Year 10 and Year 7 students spent an hour together as part of the Buddy Program.

Starting high school can be daunting but the buddy program makes the transition from junior school to high school easier and more fun. Recently we were introduced to our Year Ten buddies. Mine were Ollie and Natalia. In our first session I was able to ask them questions about APC and the two hours flew by. Thanks to the Buddy Program I can now see familiar faces as I walk down the corridors of APC.

This year Year 10 students were in charge of running activities and each Year 10 was paired with a few Year 7 buddies with similar interests.

Fun activities included cupcake decorating, origami, paper plane making, scrap booking, games, drawing, cards, sports and team bonding activities. There was plenty of chatter and fun as everyone got to know each other.

The Buddy Program was a great success and I’m sure we speak for all the Year 10 students when we say we’re looking forward to the next time we see our Year-7 buddies!

On-Water Victories APC Rowing Academy After a long winter of zoom circuit sessions and running, our senior and inter squads finally returned to the water on 9 November. We were joined a week later by our learn to row squad (which was pushed into term 4 instead of the usual term 3). Excellent attendance and dedication at training however made up for lost time and meant everyone, including our newbies, were well prepared for the coming regatta season.

Our senior crews got straight into solid training through a tailored gym program and quality on-water sessions, with emphasis also on being well organised and aware of nutrition and sleep requirements. There were some very good results at regattas, with crews often achieving above expectations.

We are also very excited that we currently have nine coxswains in the program keeping all our rowers safe on the water and making excellent

calls during training and racing. Special thanks to Phoebe Koo, Liz Arnott, Luca Hooke, Lulu Gleeson Payne, Georgia Arnott, Tanner Travis, Tom Sterkenburg, Max Hall and Ollie O’Connor for guiding everyone on the water and assisting the coaches at all times.

While the team secured many medals over the summer, special congratulations go to the Year 10 boys who remained undefeated this summer season and secured the State Championships title at the end of February.

The Rowing Academy is growing at a very rapid rate and we are thrilled to be taking delivery of two new quads at the end of this term. We are currently fundraising for a third quad to accommodate our increasing numbers.

The squad will now concentrate on winter training and other sports for terms 2 and 3.

Planning for the next learn to row program will take place shortly.

APC Sailing Academy Well done to our Sailing team, who raced in Williamstown on Sunday 28 March. Our students made it to the elimination finals and received the School Sport of Victoria Award. Congratulations to everyone involved, especially Mr Gillepsie who has run the Sailing Academy for a number of years and has fostered a love of sport at the college.

Beach Swimmers Take Title On 9 March APC took part in the Beachside Division Inter-School swimming competition.

Our swimmers thrived in the tropical conditions to win the competition with a total of 647 points, beating the likes of Glen Eira SC, Cheltenham SC, Melbourne High School, Elwood College and Prahran Secondary College.

We had many strong swimmers compete throughout the day with some notable performances from several age-group champions: • Reya Sonigra (14 girls) • Jack Gonzalez (14 boys) • Daniel Magasanik (15 boys) • Alex Dahlberg (17 boys).

New division records were set by: • Joshua Gomes – 100m Breaststroke & 50m Breaststroke • Daniel Magasanik – 100m Freestyle • Samson Magasanik – 50m Freestyle.

Ride 2 School Day Success On Friday the 19 March, APC came to school sustainably, celebrating with delicious pancakes, music, fruit and fun!

The Enviro Club put in a big effort to make the day special, gathering travel statistics and encouraging sustainable travel.

The results, as shown in the attached graphs, showed that 3 out of 4 students chose a sustainable, active and healthy way to travel to school. This is a good result and we hope that the school can continue to improve and encourage those who live close to school to walk, ride or tram.

Ride 2 School Day is the day where we celebrate our efforts to reduce our carbon footprint.

In 2019, nearly 40 percent of the school’s carbon footprint was a result of transport by air, land and sea. Choosing sustainable transport helps reduce our CO2 emissions and also prevents the mining of crude oil to produce petrol. Because it uses copious fossilfuel, students have begun debating the ethical issues around our international excursions, which are of course suspended during the global COVID-19 pandemic.

Hospitality Club Rewards Hungry Ride2schoolers After a year of strictly home-cooking, Hospitality Club has been making the most of on-site cooking this term. As a reward for participants in Ride2School day, Hospitality Club created a pancake breakfast outside the front gate, serving 205 fluffy pancakes for the hungry arrivals.

We also provided free fresh fruit and muesli bars before school and during recess time. This was our first catered event since 2019, and it was a brilliantly fun event to kick off with.

Our current project is browning herbs from seeds in terracotta pots which we decorated ourselves. Our keen cooks will now be able to garnish their creations with fresh cut herbs from their own little gardens!

Community Foods Club Is Back!

Community Foods is back in action after a year-long COVID hiatus!

For those who don’t know, Community Foods Club is an APC inspire club that uses food to reach out and give back to the community. In the past, students have made breakfasts and lunches and donated to EatUp, an organisation that donated food to low SES schools around Melbourne. We’ve made dinners for the Asylums Seekers Project and even made desserts for Father Bob. Due to the pandemic, it has been hard to find the safest way to still support our community with food. But after a good, long brainstorm, we’ve partnered up with Pets of the Homeless and are making dog treats!

Pets of the Homeless is a not for profit organisation that distributes pet food and medical supplies to the pets of homeless and disadvantaged people in our community.

Pets play a significant role in the welfare of this community as they are a source of companionship and purpose.

Celebrating our connection with Lemnos On Thursday 25 March, we acknowledged the 200th anniversary of Greek National Day. We celebrated with food, music, trivia, and language lessons. We also met with our sister school, the Highschool of Moudros, Lemnos, to share history and culture. A highlight was the appearance in our zoom meeting of the Greek Minister for Education. Keep an eye out on our Instagram page for an APCTV episode showing all the festivities of the day.

Work Experience Program: calling all parents and business owners!

Last year our year 10 students missed out on work experience, which means they now have the chance to do it as part of year 11.

Work experience 2021 will take place from 29 November to 3 December, or during school holidays, and we need parents and the local community to help out.

March Horse Riding Camp One of the exciting events this term was the return of camps, starting with a three-day horse riding camp.

The camp began in the early hours of day one in Coonawarra, where we were greeted by welcoming instructors and playful horses.

Before we met our equine buddies for the next three days, we geared up in helmets and chaps which really made us look the part!

We were partnered with our horses (or in my case a little pony), which we brushed and prepared for the ride ahead. Our accommodation, was an hour away on horseback. I had never ridden a horse before, and been told to beware aching legs after dismounting, but our horses were very experienced and the only thing we felt was a gentle rocking sensation.

In the late afternoon, we arrived at ‘The Barn’ – a cosy building with an abundance of armchairs. The next couple of days were a whirl of horses, fun and laughter. We embarked on rides into the bush, cantered around the countryside and coaxed our horses around arena obstacles.

We also made lovely friendships within our group. Even though many of us had never met before, everybody was very friendly and we were constantly laughing and joking.

Ms Playfoot and Ms Maloney accompanied us on camp, and we benefited greatly from their equestrian wisdom and constant support – as well Ms Playfoot’s excellent sautéed mushrooms!

Horse riding camp was fantastic, and I definitely want to go again next year!

Excitement Builds Over APC’s Big Musical Our first ever APC Musical is about to come to life! Having worked tirelessly since late 2019, our student Writing Team is putting the finishing touches on our script and musical score ready to be handed over to a willing cast, band and support crew to get it on stage.

Our show follows the story of the brave Bailey – a technologically-savvy girl whose mission to save her mum exposes a huge government cover up!

This completely original piece of musical theatre is part of APC’s tenth year anniversary. Auditions are currently underway, with a record number of applicants. We’ll be rehearsing throughout Term 2 and performing at the Alex Theatre in St Kilda in Term 3 (August 11–13).

French Excursions APC’s year-9 French students recently put their language skills into action in the best way possible, by ordering delicious galettes and crêpes at Crêperie Breizoz.

The French waiters were very impressed with the students’ confident use of French and the French team would like to commend students for their efforts.

Senior students also had the opportunity to be immersed in French recently, thanks to the Alliance Française French Film Festival.

Healthy Food At Pathways Participants in our Pathways program are improving their culinary skills. Each week the program’s students and staff join together to cook a dish to be enjoyed over lunch and written up student cooking journals. Term 1 featured dishes easily prepared at home. Our most recent dish was Egg Fried Rice, which each student and teacher adjusted to their own tastes, adding their own combinations of healthy ingredients. It was incredibly popular.
