roups that sprouted from the same organization often act toward each other as if they were with competing political parties. You may find that the leader and members of another group are obstructing, rather than helping, your group do its job. If this happens, it will be helpful for you to know why groups tend to conflict and how they can reconcile their differences.

A. Reasons for Inter-Faction Conflict: Possible Causes of Competition Leading to Division • Interdependency When groups depend on each other to get their work done they get frustrated when things go wrong and tend to blame the other party for the problems that exist.

• Limited resources When groups do not have enough resources or funds to get their project done, competition between them for those scarce resources becomes likely.

• Independent rewards When groups are rewarded only on the basis of their own accomplishments, the organization is reinforcing the thought that they must struggle

against each other rather than cooperate with one another.

• Different goals When groups’ goals differ—for example, one party is focused on selling tickets or holding dinner and dance parties to fundraise for the purpose of raising campaign funds for sending less fortunate children to school

through a scholarship program, whereas the other group wants to put money into starting up a business cooperative—their inharmonious goals will generate conflict.

• Different time periods When one group is concerned with meeting short-term deadlines and

another group pays more attention to long-range achievements, they are each likely to see the other as ignoring or obstructing their own initiatives and efforts.

• Different perceptions When a party gets partial and distorted information about what another party does, it will often misunderstand and misjudge the other group’s actions.

• Status incongruity When one political party gets more credit or rewards for its work than another party, resentment between them will grow.

Please do not forget that knowing the causes of inter-faction conflict is a step forward to alleviating it.

B. Possible Solutions for InterFaction Conflict When your group and other groups in a political party begin to develop negative stereotypes about each other and feel pleased when other groups fail, you and the leaders of the other parties need to intervene. To rebuild harmony and cooperation, we can do this by decreasing competition. People who feel they are working on the same side of the line are less likely to feel competitive. Unity and harmony are built by: • Emphasizing the common enemy Opposing parties unite when they recognize that they are facing a threat bigger than them. *** I was having a pleasant conversation with Albert Bonus of Team Edson who works at an oil and gas company.

We talked primarily about the economy in Alberta, a little about politics and the Filipino community then suddenly the championship game between The Babaeros Red Deer and Morinville got exciting.

Red Deer’s shooting guard Clyde Natividad scored the winning shot, 74-73 with just three seconds left in the final quarter and when the buzzer sounded that finally ended the game, the Babaeros started celebrating!

What a game!

Natividad, who was named most valuable player (definitely not playboy, which is the meaning of the name of the team, hahaha), topscored with 22

Meanwhile, Erich Francisco and her team added color to Liga Maharlika when they simultaneously organized a Co-Ed Volleyball League.

It was a good start Erich.

Five teams this year and who knows with plenty of time to prepare, seeking confirmation of teams and making sure that the officiating referees are ready and the playing venue booked, it’s going to be a better co-ed volleyball tournament next time around!

In 2016, she decided to organize a league and with the help of her friends, they formed the Volleyball Enthusiasts Association (VEA). That way, they can plan together, always schedule a tournament and enjoy the sport they love.

On October 12 to 13 at the Saville Centre, Marsha and her VEA friends are organizing a CoEd Tournament that will have a round-robin format, around 10 to 12 games before the semis, making sure that the participating teams will enjoy the competition.

Teams from Lethbridge, Medicine Hat, Calgary, Sherwood Park and host Edmonton are joining the two-day league. *** Philippine Sports Association (PSA) president Gary Perpetua announced that they are now accepting teams for their Fall/Winter Season and the deadline of submission is on September 27.

What happened to “Helping the hopeless…”

O

n September 19, 2018, exactly one year ago this month, I wrote an article for the Alberta Filipino Journal entitled “Preying on the Hopeless and the Vulnerable”. Surprisingly, an article from the staff of Triple Maple Canada, the immigration consultancy of Carl Benito also came out in the same issue with an article suspiciously entitled “Helping the Hopeless, the desperate and

the vulnerable”. The article was long, unintelligible and gobbledygook.

What came up over and over were criticisms of the CBC report and of me for repeating CBC’s “false news” and that “Without data, the writer Mr. Marco Luciano was just another person with an opinion”. They continue to lambast me on how “CBC and Mr. Luciano failed to tell their audience the facts” on one hand continued on page 10 ►

But we say everything belongs to God. We are stewards, making responsible decisions about all that which is entrusted to our care.

PEOPLE FORGET THAT WE REALLY DON'T OWN ANYTHING. EVERYTHING BELONGS TO GOD. WE ARE JUST HIS STEWARDS! Oftentimes, we hear people casually say "My mansion, my billions, my Mercedes Benz, my law office, my land, my building, my company etc. But if one thinks deeper, one will realize that we DO NOT REALLY OWN ANYTHING in this world. EVERYTHING belongs to and comes from God. We are merely His Stewards. What most people forget is that we are all just transients/travellers here on Earth.

Time and again, great powers collapse and come to an end, be they kings, heroes, world leaders, tycoons, generals and military

commanders, professionals, etc. All of them at some point in time pass on to the Great Beyond.

As humans, we get attached to material possessions and honours.

That explains the thinking with almost all politicians and holders of positions of power. Once they get to taste power, it is very hard for them to give that up, but what we easily forget is that we basically have NOTHING, as all our talents and good fortune come from God. We were born naked and we will exit from this world with NOTHING as well.

We own nothing. We are entitled to nothing. Even our titles are nothing. We are all stewards, and nothing and no one lasts forever. We are all pilgrims, and we are all just passing by. We all will die, sooner or later. We will carry nothing with us when we leave this world. And we hope we don’t leave our mess behind, just because we were selfish and proud.

PROPERTY THAT BELONGS TO CHRIST

Our lives are not our own. Our time is not our own. Our minds and hearts are not our own. Our relationships are not our own. Our skills and abilities are not our own.

They all belong to Jesus Christ, yet we still must decide how to use our lives, our time, relationships, skills and abilities.

We have the new covenant gift of managing someone else's property. The biblical term for a person who does this is steward.

In the parable of the faithful and wise steward, we see this concept.

"Who then is the faithful and wise manager, whom the master puts in charge of his servants to give them their food allowance at the proper time? It will be good for that servant whom the master finds doing so when he returns. I tell you the truth, he will put him in charge of all his possessions.

But suppose the servant says to himself, `My master is taking a long time in coming,' and he then begins to beat the menservants and maidservants and to eat and drink and get drunk. The master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he is not aware of. He will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the unbelievers.

That servant who knows his master's will and does not get ready or does not do what his master wants will be beaten with many blows, but the one who does not know and does things deserving punishment will be beaten with few blows. From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked" (Luke 12:42-48).

Everything we have is to be used in the Lord's work. That applies

to physical property such as our bodies and homes. It also applies to intangible things such as emotions, relationships and spiritual gifts.

Everything we have is the Lord's.

Everything we have should be used for his honor and glory.

At the end of our lives when we meet our Creator, He is not going to ask us for our school report cards; nor ask if we are Summa Cum Laudes or Honours Students; nor inquire if we are lawyers or doctors

or engineers; nor interrogate us if we are billionaires or CEOs or Prime Ministers.

He will be more interested in asking us: "What have you done with your life when you were on Earth? What good deeds have you done to improve the lives of your fellow human beings?"

Ladies and gentlemen, when OUR time comes up, HOW would you answer this question when asked?

• Task Force Meeting Representatives from each group or party should meet periodically to plan and discuss progress made

on specific projects involving the two tending-to-separate groups.

• Reducing inter-group distance Arrangements are made for groups that are interdependent to work as close to each other as possible so members can readily communicate and reach each other immediately when problems arise. Every opportunity taken to emphasize that the two parties have more to gain by cooperating than by competing and to help them get to know each other well would surely help in resolving intergroup or inter-political conflict.

Cooperation is the stronghold of unification. Unification proceeds from perspiration. We perspire to inspire!

Pilot project to sponsor undeclared family members

I

n July 2019, Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) announced that they would waive the application of s.117 (9) (d) in certain limited cases.

Let us examine s.117 (9)(d) of IRPR- a foreign national shall not be considered a member of the family class by virtue of their relationship to a sponsor if (d) subject to subsection (10), the sponsor previously made an application for permanent residence and became a permanent resident and, at the time of that application, the foreign national was a non-accompanying family member of the sponsor and was not examined.

Under the new policy, IRCC will exempt from the application of 117(9)(d) those who immigrated as: a resettled refugee, after being granted refugee protection in Canada, as a dependent of a resettled refugee/ protected person or after being sponsored as a spouse, commonlaw partner, conjugal partner or dependent child.

This pilot project will last two years starting September 9, 2019 to September 9, 2021.

already submitted the sponsorship application before the pilot starts?

Good news, because if they are eligible for the pilot, the application will not be refused.

I had several consultations regarding undeclared family members; before the announcement of the new pilot there was nothing that I could do except suggest that if they had legitimate reasons for not disclosing a family member, the only remedy

possible is to request an exemption from R117 (9)(d) on humanitarian and compassionate grounds. But this process is expensive, lengthy and provides no guarantee of the approval of the application.

I understand that R117 (9)(d) was introduced in 2002 to fight fraud and misrepresentation based on the presumption that failure to disclose is motivated by the deliberate intention to deceive. The impact of

such a regulation is a lifetime ban on reuniting families. In most cases, it’s the children who have been affected by this regulation. They should not suffer as a result of this regulation since it is not their fault that their parents failed to declare them in their permanent residence application. The children suffer the worst as a result of this regulation.

They are separated from family members at an age when being with family is crucial, and in many cases, they are left behind in situations where they are exposed to abuse and neglect.

We commend the Government of Canada with the introduction of this new pilot. It shows their commitment to make family reunification one of Canada’s core immigration priorities.

COMELEC Acknowledges DFA Contribution of Overseas Voting CREATE PHILIPPINES: Promoting Philippine -Canadian Partnerships in the Audio Visual Industry

T

he Philippine Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) in Toronto is pleased to announce the forthcoming Business Mission for the Audio Visual Industry to Toronto and Ottawa, Canada on September 22-27, 2019. Organized by the Department’s Export Marketing Bureau in cooperation with the Film Development Council of the Philippines and the Animation Council of the Philippines Inc. (ACPI), the Mission aims to target Canada as a major trade and investment partner and a major market to promote Philippine audio visual services.

Also known as the Trade Office of the Philippine Consulate General in Toronto, DTI-Toronto will hold a Trade Forum which will present the Philippine-Canada Co-Production Treaty, an agreement that paves the way for the Philippines to promote its audio visual services and IP assets and build partnerships with Canada.

The Forum will also highlight the signing of at least one MOU on a specific collaboration program to enhance and improve the skills of Philippine talents in storyboarding & animation capabilities to streamline the production process for creative professionals and animation studios as well as in film co –production.

B2B meetings and networking will follow after the Forum.

On September 24-26, the Philippines will also be a “featured country” at the The Animation Conference (TAC) during the Ottawa International Film Festival (OIAF), an event that aims to gather the animation community wherein artists, producers, students, and animation fans from around the globe.

The PH delegates will also visit Canadian schools and studios to expose them and broaden their knowledge on the latest technological trends in the industry.

The business delegation is composed of at least eleven (11) companies from the audio visual industry covering film, game development and animation services, production and IP content developers and creators, an industry association and stakeholders.

The Mission will be led by the DTI Undersecretary Rowel S. Barba and will be composed of the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP), Animation Council of the Philippines (ACPI), together with the 11 audio visual companies namely, TeamApp, Inc., Morph Animation Inc. (Toon City), Blissful Fun Animation, Inc., Animation Vertigo, TOIE Animation, FizzBuzz, Inc., Cordillera School of Digital Arts, Inc., ZigZag Studios, Inc., Toast and Brew Animation and Game Design Studios, Inc., Eight Horses Production, Inc. and F-squared Technologies, Inc.

23 August 2019 – The Commission on Elections (COMELEC) celebrated its 79th anniversary by hosting a Stakeholders Appreciation Night on 22 August 2019, at Manila Hotel.

In thanking the DFA, Chairman Abas stated that the Department “largely contributed in ensuring that even our overseas workers are given the opportunity to exercise their right to vote.” He further stated that “aminado kami na malaki ang kontribusyon ng overseas voting para masiguro na maayos ang patakbo ng ating halalan. The DFA, through the different embassies, have been vigilant in reporting to the COMELEC, whatever bugs or problems that they initially encounter in the early stages of the overseas voting. This helps us prevent these problems from being encountered in the actual day of the regular elections.”

During the opening remarks,

Chairman Abas thanked all the stakeholders, both from the public and private sectors, and acknowledged their contributions in achieving an honest, orderly, transparent, and credible elections, stating that through the combined efforts of COMELEC and its stakeholders, “the Filipino people continue to have high trust to our electoral process.”

The event ended with COMELEC handing out plaques of recognition to its partners. Apart from the DFA, among others given a plaque of recognition were the Department of Education, Department of Information and Communication Technology, Philippine National Police, and National Printing Office.

8 inmates involved in drug trades inside NBP hospital: solon

MANILA -- Senator Christopher Lawrence "Bong" Go on Tuesday bared that eight high-profile inmates are involved in illegal drug transactions through the alleged “hospital referral pass for sale” scheme inside the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) in Muntinlupa City.

“Most of these illegal drug transactions take place in Medical Ward 3, ng medical annex ng Building 14 and it involves several personalities.

About eight of them. Illegal drug trade continues in NBP with the hospital as the new venue for transactions,” Go told reporters in an interview.

It was reported that prison officials and personnel sell hospital passes to inmates who allegedly transact their illegal drug trade inside the NBP hospital.

Go said some inmates were moved into the NBP hospital by faking their illness and buying the so-called "hospital referral pass" from employees of the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor).

Go said the information came from a highprofile inmate but he refused to divulge the name of his source, as well as the names of the drug convicts involved in illegal transactions.

The senator, however, noted that he has forwarded the information to Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra so that the alleged anomalies in the issuance of hospital passes and illegal drug

transactions inside the NBP hospital can be investigated.

Guevarra has already ordered the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to investigate the reported irregularities in the grant of medical furlough to inmates at the NBP. In a Department Order 479, the NBI was ordered "to conduct investigation and case build-up on the alleged illegal practice of transferring Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDL) to the New Bilibid Prison Hospital for monetary consideration".

“If evidence warrants [the NBI is directed] to file the appropriate charges against persons found responsible therefor,” the order read.

Meanwhile, Guevara said the agency's oversight committee over the BuCor will immediately implement the preventive suspension ordered by the Office of the Ombudsman on more than two dozen prison officials, following reports of irregularities in the grant of Good Conduct Time Allowance (GCTA). (PNA)

Herd for Help

his summer, I was fortunate enough to work with an amazing team of like-minded people who wanted to spend their free time giving back to the community.

The student group I joined is called the Child Advocacy Society of the University of Alberta.

Our area of focus this summer was to create a fundraising campaign called, Herd for Help. Together with my co-director, Casey Wong, we spent months developing our website, garnering sponsors, holding early morning and late night meetings, and much more.

The goal is to fund resources that provide support and programs for individuals that have been or are currently being affected by childhood abuse. A majority of the funds will go towards the Zebra Child Protection Centre and a portion will go to the Child Advocacy Society of the University of Alberta.

The Zebra Child Protection Centre does so much good work as the centre is made up of a team of dedicated law enforcement, specialized assessors, medical professionals and Zebra Centre staff working to create a safe space for children who

have undergone or are undergoing child abuse. Meanwhile, our role as the Child Advocacy Society is to help promote awareness about child abuse on campus. We want to equip students and professors by educating them on how to identify the signs of abuse, how to handle it if someone comes forward to you and asks for help, and more.

Many university students may have a career working with children in the future and it is imperative that they are exposed to this knowledge.

Migrant's Voices and how “good” their company and their bosses, the Benitos are.

A year after the CBC released the news of the raid that the Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA) conducted in Carl Benito’s office and home, on Tuesday, September 3, 2019, the former Alberta Conservative MLA Carl Benito and his son Charles were charged with immigration fraud following a year-long investigation by the CBSA. He made his first court appearance on Thursday, September 5. Perhaps the Triple Maple Canada staff and the Benitos have different “truth” and “facts” than that of the CBSA. To me, the recent news was poetic justice.

On September 3rd, according to an article from Global Calgary News, Carlito (Carl) Benito, 65 of Edmonton, is charged with: • Nine counts of unauthorized employment of foreign nations • Two counts of counselling/ aiding/abetting misrepresentation • One count (90 occurrences) of counselling/aiding/abetting misrepresentation related to study permit loan scheme • One count of misrepresentation • One count of mischief Charles Jefferson Benito, 25 of Edmonton, is charged with: • Nine counts of unauthorized employment of foreign nations • Two counts of counselling/ aiding/abetting misrepresentation • One count (90 occurrences) of counselling/aiding/abetting misrepresentation related to study permit loan scheme It gave their victims some hope in obtaining justice. The news created quite a buzz in social media. Most of the comments on Facebook were feelings of

vindication and victory while others had more strong, hateful words for them. In any case I will continue to follow the case closely.

The Benitos are just the tip of the iceberg. They are just a few of the many bad consultants out there that prey on the hopeless and take their hard earned money. In my article last year, I talked about the lucrative industry of immigration consultancy, where fees from $4,000 to $20,000 are charged. According to the Canadian Bar Association(CBA), there were 1,600 members of CSIC (Canadian Society of Immigration Consultants predecessor of ICCRC) in 2010. By 2018, it mushroomed to over 4,000 ICCRC (Immigration Consultants of Canada Regulatory Council) members. The CBA is insistent on their position that “The policy idea was for immigration consultants to simply work under lawyers, in the same way that paralegals came under the supervision of lawyers in Ontario.”

In April of this year, the Liberal Government enacted legislation that would create and make the College of Immigration and Citizenship Consultants Canada’s official regulatory and oversight body. The College of Immigration and Citizenship Consultants Act or Bill C97 is legislation that is intended to “protect Canadians, prospective newcomers and immigration and citizenship consultants in good standing against fraudulent consultants who are preying on the most vulnerable” according to Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, Ahmed Hussen.

The Minister said the legislation would give the College “both the powers and tools they need for vigorous oversight, enforcement, investigations and punishment to root out fraudulent immigration and citizenship consultants and hold them accountable for their actions.”

The Act will also have an accredited university program.

This new program will be at Queen’s University Faculty of Law and Uniersitéde Sherbrooke and will train immigration consultants.

Launching in 2021, the universities will be the sole accredited schools training consultants in their respective languages and Queen’s expects 500 students per year to take the 66week, mostly online course.

However, the creation of the College fell short of comprehensive protection of migrants. Why? The new College will still be self-regulated, similar to the current ICCRC. Its board will also mainly be ICCRC members with a couple of members from the Federal Government and perhaps a “stakeholder”. It will be a conflict when there are complaints or action is taken against their members, unless their investigation and complaint system is as rigorous as the CBA’s. But at the moment, nobody knows how it would roll out.

The sad reality is that ghost consultants will continue to operate outside of ICCRC’s regulation.

Fraudulent consultants will continue to exploit immigration applicants through extremely high fees, threats or other criminal means. Like the Benitos’ alleged case, many of these consultants will continue to make empty promises, or represent applicants incompetently by providing services without sufficient knowledge of Canada’s immigration laws or procedures.

Meanwhile, the migrants seeking pathways to permanent residency and the community will also remain vigilant in ensuring that justice will prevail for the victims of the Benitos and other bad consultants. In the meantime I’ll cherish the quote of Triple Maple Leaf Canada Staff, “Mr. Marco Luciano is just another guy with an opinion”.

Cebu: A Place of Discovery

ebu is a historic province in the Philippines, located in the Central Visayas region, and consists of a main island and 167 surrounding islands. Its capital is Cebu City, the Queen City of the South, the previous and first capital of the Philippines. Thinking about the province itself, it screams of a complex history and historical significance to the country. It is where the Philippines introduced its story. Visiting the beautiful province undoubtedly makes you think about how epic the discovery of our country was. You can see a lot of historic evidence like the different Catholic churches, the shrines and the island itself. Our bayani(s) or heroes have achieved many remarkable things that prove our pagkapilipino. Cebu stays a unique place where you feel proud of yourself as a Filipino because our discovery was here, our story started in Cebu. I was amazed at how the local people of Cebu, especially in Cebu City, properly preserved and are still trying to preserve the

It was devastating to see

what the earthquake had done to the province but the locals remained very welcoming and accommodating even if they had been through a lot.

They were remarkably strong and hardworking to be able to stand up for themselves and restart. They were capable of saving the tourist spots and our historical sites. This proves to us that no matter what comes into our lives, we will be able to face them because we are Filipinos and Filipinos are very optimistic and

Filipino Community Gathers for the Roundtable Discussion on Bill 11 – The Fair Registration Practices Act

The discussions focus on the provisions of the Bill 11 – The Fair

Registration Practices Act, which will define all Professional Regulatory Bodies in Alberta in order to carry out registration practices that are transparent, objective, impartial and procedurally fair.

The Bill intends to provide professionals with timely decisions, responses and reasons from different Regulatory Bodies with respect to a Professional application for registration within 6 months after receiving the application. For the case of Regulatory bodies that relies on 3rd party agencies to assess the qualifications of an applicant, they shall take reasonable measures to ensure that a third part conducts the assessment in a way that is transparent and objective.

The Bill will establish a Fair

Registration Practices Office to assist the Minister in the exercise of the Minister’s powers which includes conducting an audit in compliance with this Act. Different road blocks that each professional had experienced during their registration process were brought to the roundtable discussion – and it was noted that most of the attendees are still waiting for the decisions from their different Regulatory Bodies.

Bill 11 will not be enforced until it becomes an Act. The present Alberta Government is pushing this Bill to be able to implement it soon so that International Educated Professionals can go back to their Profession and be a part of building the Alberta Economy.

As a journalist with over 14 years of experience, I have covered different events from rallies on the street, entertainment and international sports events like the Asian Games. My favorite pastime is singing. I have always believed that life would be boring without music.

ecently, there has been a lot of news on the plans of the Provincial Government to cut Healthcare spending in Alberta.

Premier Jason Kenney promised before the election that he was not going to do this, as communicated via his Health Care Guarantee announcement.

So if it is true that the Premier is cutting Healthcare spending, then he is not fulfilling his promise.

These are all speculations until they actually happen but it would be nice for him to prove his critics wrong.

A recent visit to the Emergency Room in one of the hospitals in Edmonton has me wondering about how efficient our current healthcare system is. Why does it take such a long time for a patient to be seen by a doctor? Talking from experience, we were at the hospital emergency department to get my son’s stomach checked because he felt pain there.

He initially ignored it, thinking it might be the sudden change of weather and that his mucles were just probably adjusting to the climate.

But because he felt bad when he woke up in the morning, he came to my room and requested to be brought to the Hospital. Knowing my son, he does not complain for nothing. So we arrived at the Hospital around 7 in the morning and they were able to get a doctor to look at him around 9:45 AM and the doctor then ordered a blood test as well as an X-ray to be done.

It was about 10:30 AM when both the blood test and X-Ray were completed and at around 12:30 PM, the results were in. This was where everything went south. There was about 6 to 7 Charts waiting for the doctor’s attention.

So, the patients were gathered inside the emergency waiting area and no one, including us, were

updated on the status. I had to stand up twice to ask the nurses what we were waiting for. There were a lot of nurses and only a few doctors and It took another 3 hours of waiting before the doctor looked at the results of the chart and let us leave. Why the long wait when the doctor could have done this in 3 minutes? What was worse is that some people who were behind us were let go ahead of us.

While I understand the need for more doctors, there must be a better way of doing things. I know that the nurses do triage and assess according to symptoms and knowledge. My question is, if you have the colour

coding, how many doctors are assigned to the colour coded list? Is there only one doctor to look after everyone in the emergency room or does each line have an assigned resident doctor? Maybe someone can enlighten me on this process so we can understand the system better for the benefit of Albertans.

Because what I understand is this current system has a problem and needs to be more efficient. ***** I recently saw Ms. Loida Lumanlan, the Hardworking and Reliable Edmonton Realtor. Ms. Lumanlan expresses that she likes my August 2019 Column. If you have not read

wento't Litrato is a collaborative photodocumentary project by Migrante Alberta. It explores the Filipino migrant life, struggles and victories in Alberta, and all of this is told through the lenses of the community members themselves. Over the summer of 2019, collaborators from different sectors of the Filipino community in Calgary and Edmonton participated in a series of photography and storytelling workshops developed by the organization. Photographer Nwel Saturay, the lead of the project with some twenty-four Filipino participants said “When we developed the project, we wanted to leave the migrant community with something more than a one-off coffee table book – we wanted to teach them how to use photography to document their experiences and share their unique stories.”

Following five sessions each in Calgary and Edmonton from May to July, the project culminated with an exhibit of the work of the participants.

The first public exhibition was launched in Calgary from August 17 until August 29, and later moved to Edmonton City Hall from August 31 to September 6. The exhibit will be shown one more time at the Kalinangan: Philippine Culture Days Celebration at Mill Woods Senior and Multicultural Centre in Edmonton on September 28.

Ponoka walked for the poor

A

ll gathered at the Lions Centennial Park to hold the first ANCOP Walk in Ponoka, Alberta, a mission area of Edmonton. The music ministry, led

by Bro. John and Sis. Anne Braun from Edmonton, came early in the morning to set up the sound system. Also, among the early birds was the service team who brought the gazebos to protect the ANCOP registrars from the sun for the entire activity and to get the registrations organized for walk-in participants.

Ponoka held the first walk from out of the three walks scheduled for Edmonton and mission areas, so they were the first to get their iconic green ANCOP t-shirts.

The Area Leaders, Bro. Ali and Sis. Maria Perez inspired many with their opening remarks. Bro Ali spoke how daunting it first felt being newly assigned as area leader and as the same time as ANCOP leaders who would coordinate the 2019 ANCOP Walk. But with God as their guide and under the direction

of Edmonton ANCOP Leaders, Bro. Henry and Sis. Millete Gutierrez, they became confident things would turn out right. Sis. Maria was grateful that the participants placed “priority to being at the walk and helping the poor, instead of going camping or gardening” .

This was followed by prayers and blessing from Fr. Abraham Shimit, Pastor of St. Augustine Parish in Ponoka. The ANCOP walk was officially opened by the Edmonton Area Head, Bro. Ernie Anzures.

There were 74 participants who registered online and 11 more registered on that day of the walk.

The venue was not that big, so participants did about 4 to 5 rounds until they could not go on anymore.

Lloydminster walked for the second time for the poor

F

or its second year, the continuance of ANCOP Walk in Lloydminster was initially thought to be doubtful. As of the evening before the walk, there were only 12 registered participants.

The spirit of the Edmonton ANCOP Head, Bro. Henry Gutierrez, was however not shaken by any means. He gathered his service team, music ministry and the ANCOP core members. They drove from Edmonton to Lloydminster early on Saturday, 17 August 2019, the day of the walk and met at the Bud Miller All Seasons Park. The walk must go on!

The day was surprisingly beautiful considering the weather forecast was cloudy and strong winds. The Edmonton team excitingly completed the set-up, still hopeful of a good turnout against all odds. While the extra vibrant music was filling the air at the venue, supporters from Lloydminster came but in small

numbers. Walk-in registrants totalled 20, bringing total participants to 32.

The program began with welcome address from Bro. Jun Amo, Chapter Leader in charge of this mission area.

After two rounds, Bro. Henry gathered the walkers for the announcement of the results of the walk and for an update on the projects of ANCOP for 2019. He also called on the winners of the raffle that afternoon.

In closing, he encouraged the Lloydminster brethren to keep their zeal in helping the poor and to continue working for an increase in support for the ANCOP Walk in 2020.

Despite the Weather Disturbance

Thousands Attend A Very Successful Fiesta Filipino 2019

housands of Filipinos gathered at the Olympic Plaza in Downtown Calgary last August 31 and September 1, 2019 to join the Celebration of the Fiesta Filipino 2019 which was graced by GMA artist Lovi Poe and Ian Veneracion.

Known to be resilient, Filipino Canadian were prepared for the rain because the forecast portrayed a thunderstorm later that day, but that did not stop them from coming out to support this annual

festivities which started on August 30, 2019 at the Arts Common Centre where there was a an exhibit.

Followed by the Cultural day on August 31, 2019 at the Olympic Plaza where attendees experience Rondalla Music and traditional cultural dances. Because of the thunderstorm forecast, Fiesta Filipino organizers were forced to advance the program to present Celebrity Actress Lovi Poe and got her to sing sooner. Poe thank the crowd who came to watch the show despite the rain. The crowd had a good time as Poe sang and shook hands with the crowd and entertained selfies.

Because of the weather, a volunteer had to open an umbrella to shelter Poe from the rain.

Contestants Danced in front of Poe to the laughter of the crowd. Indeed it was a fun day as the guest artist danced with one of the contestants.

The event was really well organized as volunteer moved a big tent to shelter Ms. Poe from the rain so she could continue to perform for the crowd. The last day of the event turned out to be a better day where Actor Ian Veneracion performed live to the delight of many Filipino fans. The annual event also brings together all the Filipino food restaurants and businesses around Calgary.

OPM Hitmakers Concert: An evening of nostalgia

Three of the Philippines’ biggest names in the entertainment industry brought an evening of nostalgia to Original Pilipino Music (OPM) fans in Edmonton as they performed at the jampacked Southpointe Community Center on Saturday night, September 14.

And it seemed that the absence

of two other OPM icons did not lower the excitement of the fans.

Rey Valera could not make it for medical reasons, according to Dr.Nimrod Montano, who copromoted the concert with Palabok House's Lydia Jimenez and the absence of Rico Puno, an original member of the touring group, who died of heart failure in October last year, was relived with a tribute by the singers while Puno’s video was played on big screen.

The crowd turned on the flash lights on their smart phones and in unison waved as the songs of the late music icon were sung by the trio.

The Hitmakers started with their solo careers in the 1970s but they've grown more popular in the 1980s with their Hitmakers concerts in the Philippines and abroad.

Guest singer Alynna Velasquez from the Filipino TV series “Kadenang Ginto” added color to the night and sang a duet with Hajji.

The OPM Hitmakers wrapped up their concert with the "Manila" song by Filipino band Hotdog, which topped the radio charts in 1984.

Lourdes Abesamis of Edmonton even brought her tatay Don and nanay Lily to the concert.

Liz Jackson of Sherwood Park fetched her friend Ito who flew from Vancouver just to watch the Hitmakers.

Filipinos from Fort McMurray, Calgary and nearby towns drove to Edmonton with their family and

friends for the event that was dubbed “OPM Hitmakers: The Final Tour”.

That night had another big event at the River Cree Casino starring Filipino-American comedian Jokoy but it looked like there were more sentimental Pinoys and Pinays at Southpointe where they recalled their own life stories through the songs of Hajji, Marco and Nonoy.

It was indeed an evening of nostalgia.

And that you’ll only experience with the OPM Hitmakers.

The Edmonton Community Foundation’s Young Edmonton Grants Program JAN THE MAN’S NOTE JANUEL CEDRICK IBASCO Januel Cedrick Ibasco is a proud Filipino-Canadian and is currently a student at the University of Alberta studying for a Bachelor of Arts in Recreation, Sport, and Tourism in the Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport, and Recreation. Sportsmanship is a big slice of his cake. He is highly-spirited when playing golf, volleyball, and basketball and loves reading, writing and volunteering at church. Jan looks forward to taking up law after his undergraduate degree.

he Edmonton Community Foundation (ECF) was formed by the Edmonton Community Foundation Act passed in 1971 and became openly active in 1989. The overall mission of ECF, which can be found on their website states, “…to

attract and steward endowment funds and to make strategic investments that enhance quality of life in Edmonton.”

ECF’s vision is to be trusted by donors, recognized by charities as a collaborative funder, and acknowledged by community leaders as a place of

innovation and investment.

A few of the Edmonton Community Foundation’s values include maintaining relationships with the community which include donors, grantees, volunteers, and staff, as well as integrity, autonomy and independence of others, and community leadership and visionary thinking.

I have recently become involved with ECF as an ambassador/advisory committee member for the Young Edmonton Grants (YEG) Program created by the Foundation. The goal of this program, “…provides local youth with funding to turn their ideas into reality”. Essentially, the program provides funding for projects organized by young Edmonton and area residents (ages 13-24) which range from $500-$3000. The key

focus of this program is to foster and demonstrate youth leadership in the organization of these projects. Youth leadership can involve many attributes which include mentorship, confidence, skill development, teamwork, taking initiative, and compassion just to name a few.

It is important to note that in creating a successful application it must be “initiated and organized” by young Edmonton and area residents who create their own projects as this granting program is not intended to provide funding or support to charities or agencies that provide programming or services for youth.

Application deadlines are three times a year, February 15 for funding after April 1, May 15 for funding after July 1, and October 15 for funding

after December 1. Applications will be available one month before the deadline. Applicants need to partner with their school or a registered charity to support their applications. Funds, if awarded, will be sent to the partner charity or school. It is important to note that this is a one-time grant, meaning multi-year requests will not be considered. Lastly, all approved grants including the names of the charities/projects will be named in Edmonton Community Foundation’s publications.

Filipino Senior Citizens Association of Edmonton Initiated NO Plastic Policy

he Filipino Senior Citizens Association (FSCA) of Edmonton, Alberta agreed to the use of Environmentally Friendly Eating Utensils at their meeting last month. It was agreed during their discussion that reusable eating utensils and cutlery will be provided to each member and every time they come to FSCA social they will bring and use the same.

This is a great move for a small organization like the FCSA to be followed by other organizations to eventually contribute to the reduction of plastic waste.

Plastic waste is now considered a global epidemic as cited by the United Nation. A simple contribution from every one of us will mean a lot to this global war on plastic pollution.

The Marine Conservancy (as sited in www.plastic-pollution. org) has published that the estimated decomposition rates of most plastic debris found on coastal waters are: • Foamed plastic cups: 50 years • Plastic beverage holder: 400 years • Disposable diapers: 450 year • Plastic bottle: 450 • Fishing line: 600 years.

you use for your delicious “kare-kare” and “sisig” during your social event eventually wind up in a landfill and will need 500 years to decompose. The same goes for your styrofoam cups as well. They will remain there for more than 6 generations after we are gone.

PART III THE EXAMPLE OF AMASIAH

A Matter of Choice

Let us examine this singular reference to this personality of the Old Testament.

Look at the valuable lessons we can discover regarding Christian service.

A marvelous lesson on Christian service is revealed by asking a few simple questions: 1. WHAT did Amasiah do? He “willingly offered himself.”

As Jehoshaphat was building Judah’s defensive infrastructure, he needed those of willing hearts; capable soldiers; devout patriots. He sought those who were committed to the cause. What kind of defensive network would the king have without such individuals? Amasiah realized this need; he understood his abilities; responded to the urgent need.

Amasiah offered the best possible! He offered himself in service.

This attitude of self-surrender, selfsacrifice, self-realization is urgently needed today! We need members of the Lord’s Church to possess this mind-set of this ancient Judean warrior!

Cheerful, self-surrender is the secret of all service that pleases God! Christianity was established by the spirit of self-sacrifice.

John 10:17, 18 This same spirit is essential if the Lord’s Church is to exist today! Examine Matthew 19:27 and discuss how it urges Christians to self-sacrifice.

Unwillingness to surrender

it practically mean for Christians in every day activities? How does it relate to one’s desires to be in attendance at all services?

Too many Christians today lament the fact they are not finding “joy” in the Lord’s Church. They are not “fulfilled.” Why? Because they failed to do what Amasiah did – willingly offered himself unto the Lord!

There are some today who fail to enjoy Christianity because they hesitate to give a total sacrifice to God until their later years. They then look back at how they spent their energies and resources in youthful years and are filled with remorse.

At ang sagot ko “oo, ikaw ba?”

Sinabihan mo ako ng magandang umaga.

Dahil oo, gumaganda ang aking mga umaga kapag ikaw ang kasama.

Sa paglipas ng maghapon gusto ikaw ang kasama kahit umulan.

Kahit magkaroon ng sipon at madulas sa ating dinaraanan.

Kahit mapadpad kung saan Basta kasama kita, aking oras ay sa iyo lamang ilalaan.

Mahal, mahal na mahal kita.

Kung saan ang nakikita ko na lang ay ang iyong mga mata.

Ang iyong mata na tila’y ako’y naliligaw.

This is a sad thought BUT they should not allow Satan to steal away their joyful surrender to Christ! They have much to offer God and should begin where they are and serve as Amasiah did!

Amasiah offered himself unconditionally; no conditions; no ifs or buts.

There is a tremendous need for such sacrifices today. Do you possess this attitude? Do you serve God with ALL your heart? Whose priorities do you pursue?4 2. HOW did Amasiah do this? He surrendered himself “willingly.”

It is interesting to notice that this is the only captain in the king’s army given this compliment. We are not told why Amasiah is so complimented. a) Possibly, he was a man of great skill and was desperately needed but he could have had greater success elsewhere. b) Possibly, he came from a far district of Judah. c) Possibly, the words enshrine some now forgotten memory of cheerful courage or some heroic feat on the battlefield. Whatever the reason, the words are a wonderful point to contemplate.

Amasiah’s willingness causes us to focus upon another critical element of proper service in the Lord’s Kingdom -- the DEGREE of our willingness!

The degree of Divine acceptance to our service/sacrifices is in direct proportion to the degree of willingness which motivates them!

Kung saan di mo man lang ako hinanap, kaya aking tinanong sa sarili kung bakit.

An unwilling act or sacrifice is immediately rejected. God is repulsed by those who are compelled by factors other than a willing heart. Study through Malachi 1:5-14 and observed God’s attitude toward those who are unlike Amasiah!

The citizens of God’s Kingdom are volunteers. They enter the Kingdom voluntarily. They enter the Lord’s Army voluntarily. A “willing heart” is the hallmark of God’s followers (cf. Psalm. 110:3).

Is God pleased with your service?

With your sacrifices? How can you be absolutely certain? By imitating Amasiah!

The degree of Divine acceptance is in proportion to the degree of willingness in your heart! a) To do the right thing with biblical commands, cheerfulness, eagerness, and abounding joy is to receive the fullness of God’s acceptance, commendation, and reward. b) The apostle Paul illustrates the blessings that arise when we offer voluntary service to our Lord Jesus Christ (cf. Galatians 2:20; Philippians 3:7-9). c) King Zedekiah illustrates the consequence of evil that arise from unwillingness (2 Chronicles 36:11-16).

A willing attitude is VERY important because . . . Unwillingness destroys the character of our offering and robs it of all sacredness (cf. 2 Corinthians 9:7; review Malachi 1:5ff). Reluctant Christianity is not true Christianity! continued on page 24 ►

Looking at the Word through Gender Based Analysis Plus

T

he concept of Gender Based Analysis Plus keeps in mind that different laws, policies, infrastructure and communication methods affect people in different ways. For products and services that are meant for the general public to use, it is sometimes easy to forget that what is easy for us, may not be easy for others. Beyond just gender, other factors are considered such as literacy level, age, access to technology, race, sexuality, and more.

As migrants to this country, I would say that we have experienced this in some way, the feeling that our circumstances are not fully considered. There is a desire to make the system just a bit simpler and easier to navigate and understand.

I volunteer for our city’s public transit advisory board, and I’m glad that in many ways, the members of board are diverse. We did an evaluation of one of the transit stations and realized pretty quickly that our fellow volunteer, who is visually impaired and can read only large print, immediately had difficulty with reading the directional signs. I pretended to be a mother and had a baby stroller to push around. Unfortunately, identifying entrances with elevators and ramps

I attended a fundraising gala for an organization, and the lively emcee was working in sync with a sign language interpreter on stage, so that those who could not hear him could still understand what was being said. The State of the City Address by the mayor of the City of Edmonton, was accessible via Facebook live so that those who could not attend the event downtown could still watch. On top of that, there was live captioning of the video for those who are hearing

impaired, or even just those who have a technical issues with their computer speakers. Talk about making this work for as many people as possible. It’s incredible!

Winter brings up a lot of discussions about Gender Based Analysis Plus as well. I feel like a party pooper by mentioning winter already. But let’s be honest, our first snowfall can happen anytime now. With limited resources, and different people or organizations being responsible for different things, the gaps and inconsistencies

If nothing else is known about a person, it is wonderful to hear this commendation spoken, “Well, whenever there was a need and something to do, he/she was ALWAYS there!”

3. WHY did he do it? Amasiah loved “the Lord.”

This phrase suggests that Amasiah was so willing because he possessed a sense of devotion to God. His primary aim in serving – not for personal accolades but because he knew it was the Lord’s business!

Amasiah reveals another important point that is often ignored when service is considered – all service offered to God is forever remembered! (Amos 8:7).

Whatever is offered willingly and in accordance with the Scriptures is FOREVER remembered by God! Men may shrug off your service here. Some may think what you do is insignificant. THE CONCLUSION THE RESULTS OF CHOOSING TO SERVE WILLINGLY Amasiah’s example assures us that the following results will be very evident in our lives: APPROVAL BY GOD The world has forgotten this ancient soldier, or it never knew him – an obscure soldier in an obscure kingdom.

However God has never forgotten His servant Amasiah! His service stands as a memorial to all generations. His service urges all today to serve as Amasiah served!

There is a voice that is mightier than the Chronicler's--the Almighty God. It matters very little what history books say about us and our service, but it matters EVERYTHING what God says about our service! (Matthew 25:34-36).

WE MUST HAVE A DETERMINATION TO HELP. It is not enough just to want to be a servant – we must be determined to be servants, we must be determined to help.

When people make comments such as “well, how about this other group of people, will this work for them?”, I encourage people to pause for a moment. It’s not necessarily about being difficult and petty.

You know what I have found – there are four types of givers: 1. People who give because they are willing to give.

2. People who are able to give but they are not willing to give.

3. People who are unable to give but don't have the will to give.

4. People who are unable to give but do give willingly at all cost.

If we want to develop a servant's heart we must be determined to help.

WE MUST COMMIT TO FOLLOW-SHIP. Everyone is following something: Friends' advice, the pursuit of money, and the opinions of others, to name a few. Look at Hebrews 13:7: “Remember them which have the rule over you, who have spoken unto you the word of God: whose faith follow, considering the end of their conversation.”

To imitate is to follow.

The first question to ask is: “Where are they going?” In other words - Is this person leading me to the right

If the answer is yes, then, the three principles of follow-ship need to be implemented.

1. Trust – (if they go left – you go left.)

2. Obedience – (if you say, I don’t want to – you are not following.)

3. Risk – (If they go fast – you go fast.)

Look at Hebrews 13:17: “Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you."

APPLICATION WE MUST START MEETING THE NEEDS AROUND US. The minute we start meeting the needs around us – we become servants.

Look at Matthew 25:31-46. a) Never miss an opportunity to help.

Good workers – work. Good servants – serve.

When coaches are trying to win a game they don’t look at who looks best in his uniform. The coach looks for the players who perform the best on the field. The Lord Jesus Christ does too: "Well done, good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of the lord."

uring the time of Jesus, the common understanding was that disease and illness was caused by evil spirits.

Our gospel for today gives us the remedies for healing the sick.

There are three points I would like to highlight. First, healing is powerful if we are mindful of others. There are maladies and health disorders around us because of our lack of concern.

Nowadays, animals especially dogs are brought into hospitals and long-term care. They really have a healing effect on the patients. So sad that some of us have been too busy and can no longer pay sick family members a visit. Robots are replacing family in other countries to take care of the old. What seemed like science fiction before has now become a tragic reality.

We care so much about things and animals but we neglect humans. We lose our affection for the people around us. We no longer mind the people who have a keen affinity to us. But this is not the case with Peter.

His love and concern restored the health of his mother-in-law.

You know what, when we care, we can cure, for CARE IS the CURE! Guys, it is not healthy

to stay with people who don’t even bother to ask how you are. My dear kababayans, we can change the world if we care enough.

Second, care can be expressed through simple gestures of kindness.

“Laying His hands on the sick persons; He healed them.” Jesus made use of touch to heal people.

My dear kababayans, a simple gesture of kindness like a smile can truly make a difference. Friends, use your life to heal, not to inflict pain. A simple handshake can start a life-giving friendship.

Finally, we can cure if we are always available. Jesus works from sunrise to sunset, from dawn to dusk. He makes time for people.

Friends, BEING AVAILABLE IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN BEING DESIRABLE. Like Jesus, this is what we are sent to do: to heal and to help!

he concept of paying it forward was popularised in the movie “Pay It Forward,” a Mimi Leder film released in October 2000 that starred Kevin Spacey, Helen Hunt, and Haley Joel Osment.

But the concept is by no means a modern one—Wikipedia dates it as far back as 317 BC when paying forward was said to be central to the plot of the comedy Dyskolos by the Greek dramatist Menander. The concept then found its way through a host of literary works over the centuries.

Why do I bring this up? Because I believe the concept of paying it forward—defined as an act of repaying a good deed or word to others instead of to the one who provided the deed or expressed the word—is one of the last remaining truly selfless acts a human being can perform.

And as such, it is often a reminder that no matter how materialistic, narcissistic, and selfish this world has become, ordinary people can be capable of selflessness and generosity beyond what is expected of them.

Simply put, paying it forward makes the world a much better place to live in. The principle of repaying kindness with kindness, not to the one who showed you kindness but to others who had nothing to do with the act itself but who would otherwise benefit from the random act, is an affirmation of our humanity. Last month, we celebrated our first year in Canada. The road has been difficult, and the challenges continue to be daunting. The APEGA 22 Key Competency & Indicators for CBA Applications – Part 5 ENGINEER IN ACTION MERVIN MENDOZA CERENO mmcereno@gmail.com

his is the fifth and last of a series of examples on how to complete your experience requirements when applying for your APEGA licensure requirement. The examples presented here are based on my personal experience and will not necessarily be the same as yours.

This will serve only as guide and not a “copy and paste” approach.

I suggest for those who will write their Experience Records to start on and follow the examples below. The previous competencies examples can be found on the Alberta Filipino Journal website under the Education Section (http:// www.albertafilipinojournal.com/ category/living/education/). The complete competency category can be found on the APEGA website.

Competency Category 6 – Social, Economic, Environmental and Sustainability 6.1 Public Impacts and Safeguards Demonstrate an understanding of the safeguards required to protect the public and the methods of mitigating adverse impacts • Awareness of the potential professional liability involved in all aspects of the design, construction, and inspection process Example: As structural engineer in training, it is important to understand the potential professional liability in performing the job assigned. Although I am not signing the plans, due diligence is important as I do my part in the process. ​As I do the detailed calculations for sizing of members for a wooden frame structure, I make sure that I am following the latest design codes.

I understand that these design codes are the basic requirements to follow to ensure the protection of those who will occupy the building. During the shop drawing review of the structural wood members, I made sure that the correct strength of wood as per design basis was followed and that it is consistent with the design loads I specified in the General Notes and the calculation documents I made during the detailed design process. ​As the project progresses, the Inspection reports I did must be consistent with the compliance of the Contractor on all approved-for-construction drawings.

6.2 Engineering and the Public Demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between the engineering activity and the public • Recognize the value and benefits of the engineering work to the public • Prepare reports regarding the impact of a project to public​ Example: As I performed my job as EIT, the job must always be error-free as it involves the safety of the public. One project I was involved with is the design of a simple variable message sign (VMS) installed onto a single tubular pole of about 7.0m high. The signage was to be installed on a busy highway and needed to be designed to withstand all types of forces. While completing my design, I was advised by my senior engineer to perform a fatigue analysis as it is critical for those types of structures. The sign (although a simple structure) could pose a big threat to the general public as it is exposed on a busy highway. It had to be detailed and accurately analyzed according to the provisions of applicable code requirements.

As I analyze different load conditions, it is important to note that this “simple structure” will be a great benefit to the public as it will be used as information signage for those who travel the highway; however, it can only serve its purpose if it is designed precisely and accordingly to the intended life of the structure.

6.3 Role of Regulatory Bodies Understand the role of regulatory bodies on the practice of engineering • Recognize the importance of respecting the regional traditions and native regulations towards a project • Understand the role and regulations of other professions whose practices overlap or interface with the practice of professional engineering Example: Presently, I am working in a Multi-Discipline company where excellent coordination is key to the success of every project. I am coordinating my design with Mechanical and Electrical

Engineers who have their own different code provisions, bound by their practice as Professional Engineers. As I prepare final design calculations, I have to be aware of their requirements as to their compliance according to their discipline.

I​ have to understand that the integration of each discipline in a specific project must be of compliance and it is fair to all concerns.

6.4 Sustainability and Practice Guidelines Be aware of any specific sustainability clauses that have been added to practice guidelines that apply to their area • Awareness and understanding Example: As a professional, day to day activity at the office of saving office supplies usually applies. If there is no need to print emails, communications, shop drawings, etc., I conduct my job though electronic means. Use of applicable software for check-prints are implemented, as well as the use of recycled paper for my calculation sheets as this will save us from more office waste. With this simple act, sustainability awareness in a workplace can be applied.

6.5 Promotions of Sustainability To the extent possible, recognizing the applicant's position of influence, consider how sustainability principles could be applied and promoted in his or her specific work • Include sustainability analysis in project descriptions Example: In the performance of my job as Engineer in Training, I make sure that selecting sustainable materials for the construction of buildings are strictly implemented according to the code of practice of standards. The choice of Engineered Wood Products as applicable compared to steel or concrete materials is used. The cost of materials and the awareness of the amount of carbon footprint it will inhibit are one of the considerations in my analysis.

In recent years, more and more materials that are sustainable in nature are becoming the trend in constructions.

Attending new product demonstrations and training is one of the ways of promoting sustainability in my profession.

This article completes the APEGA 22 Key Competency. The examples I presented are some of the ideas that you need to consider when writing your Competency Self-Assessment Worksheet (CSAW) for your APEGA Application. The CSAW printable version can be downloaded from the APEGA website. Please note that in writing your CSAW, you have to break your experience into 3 parts. First, the “Situation” which defines the instances in which the specific Key Competency applies, second, the “Action” which narrates what you did or your specific role in the “Situation”, and third, the “Outcome” - you will narrate here the result of the action you did.

The examples I provided here and in the past issues of Alberta Filipino Journal are some examples of a “Situation” and will need to be further elaborated.

undreds of Calgarians filled the Magnolia Banquet Hall in Northeast Calgary on Monday night to attend the launch of the Alberta Advantage Immigration Strategy.

Premier Kenney was on hand to discuss the first step towards a new immigration strategy that will help create new jobs and reignite the economy. The government plans to work with newcomers, industry experts and other stakeholders to identify and clarify issues surrounding newcomers and the impact of immigration on the province.

Consultations, led by Labour and Immigration Minister Jason Copping and Parliamentary Secretary of Immigration Muhammed Yaseen, will help develop Alberta’s first immigration strategy since 2005.

They will focus on removing barriers for newcomers and proactively attracting professionals from around the world.

“Alberta is the land of opportunity, which is why we are developing a comprehensive immigration strategy that attracts talented job creators from around the world, knocks down unnecessary barriers and champions economic inclusion,” said Premier Jason Kenney.

Newcomers face many challenges when arriving in Canada, including barriers to employment and lack of access to information. Nationally, over 500,000 newcomers are currently unable to work in the fields they have trained for.

Labour and Immigration Minister Jason Copping acknowledged that “Alberta is a destination of choice for thousands of skilled and qualified professionals from around the world, and getting those people to work in the industries they are trained for, as soon as we can, is crucial to our economy.”

Quality Care Group of Companies (QCGC) co-founder Kris Salumbides turned another leaf this month and friends held a simple birthday celebration for him at the “Tahanan ni Benjie Lindo”.

Salumbides, who along with his business partners Jesse Tallon and Jacob Christian opened the first Filipino co-owned Medicus Family Health Clinic and Pharmacy in Edmonton, said he is very grateful to family and friends for remembering him.

“Just grateful, thankful. Di ko naman expect na maghahanda ang mga kaibigan ko,” said Salumbides, who came to Canada as a foreign worker in 2008 and worked his way up to become a business owner and Quality Care Group has generated

employment to fellow Albertans for the last six years.
