the government decided to hold a lottery to see who would be allowed to apply. Families that won the lottery have a limited time to complete applications. However, IRCC said

mmigration Minister Marco Mendicino announced on October 5 the reopening of the new parent and grandparent sponsorship program. The program was halted, and announcement was delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. However, the Liberal government also chose to revert the program back to a lottery system which is a random selection process until they reach the cap.

You may remember last year that the Trudeau government scrapped an unpopular lottery system for reuniting immigrants with their parents and grandparents. They replaced it with a first-come-firstserve process. They also increased the number of sponsorship applications they said they will accept. The new program will open on Oct. 13 for a three-week period. During this period, people can fill out and submit forms to express interest in bringing their parents or grandparents to Canada. According to Canada immigration, “there are normally 20,000 spots available, but due to the suspension caused by COVID-19, there will be 10,000 available spots this year and 30,000 in 2021”.

Filipino migrants have been experiencing family separation for a long time. Filipinos that came to Canada under the Temporary Foreign Worker Program mostly came alone. They left their families behind. For those that were lucky enough to be reunited with their families, it was at the expense of long separation, and not being able to see their children grow up.

The time Conservative government of Stephen Harper and Jason Kenney shut down the pathways for sponsoring parents and grandparents, and on December 1st, 2011, they installed the “Super Visa” program for parents and grandparents that wanted to come to Canada. The Super Visa allowed them an extended stay as a temporary resident for up to two years. It is available to someone who is either a parent or a grandparent of a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada. A Super Visa is valid for up to ten years however the burden of care was transferred to the sponsoring families.

Be it a prisoner, a sick person, a person who is trapped in a ditch, a sailor in a boat on a stormy sea, or anybody who applied for a permanent residency through a nominee program or by means of Humanitarian and Compassionate Grounds, the destitute, a prostitute, a town, city, province, nation, and an entire world that is set in war against racism or discrimination and most of all, a fight against the morbid COVID pandemic—all of them trust in hope as their coping mechanism.

We felt hopeless in our own country. We came to this country with the expectation and hope of looking for greener pastures and a better life. Luckily, if you are content with whatever you have and enjoying the work you aimed to do or in work you have in lieu of what you did back home, then, such a hope that turned into a belief is so true.

The government believes that the reorganization is going to be helpful. According to Minister of Health Tyler Shandro: “Most of the jobs will come from outsourcing general support services like Lab Services, Housekeeping, and in-hospital food services.”

But what do the 11 thousand workers hope for?

Maybe, what they only have at this very moment is HOPE. Hope to cope with the demands of time and with whatever this government is catering to its people.

What hope can we give to whoever is going to be hopeless?

Last year, the Trudeau government scrapped an unpopular lottery system. Then Immigration Minister Ahmed Hussen announced changes to the sponsorship program for parents and grandparents which are supposed to be replaced with a first-come-first-served process.

However it didn’t take long; this year's new system was delayed because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

However, for this new family reunification program, the Liberal government has decided to revert back to a lottery program. While it is reducing the qualification vis-a-vis the allowable income requirement, the lottery will only be open for three weeks. It will again shut down with no promise of reopening.

In his statement, Immigration Minister Marco Mendicino says they will accept only 10,000 applications for the program this year. That is down from the 27,000 accepted last year. But, they pledged to increase that to 30,000 next year.

Still, migrants' lives are not a game of lottery. They have been separated from their families for long periods of time and for those that are “not lucky” they might not be able to be reunited with their parents and grandparents again.

Advocacy Society of the University of Alberta for the Zebra Centre running from 1 September 2020 31 October 2020.

Most children who have experienced child abuse suffer in silence which gives a false impression that it is rare.

In reality, 1 out of 3 Canadians report experiencing child abuse and over 90% of them do not come forward before the age of 15.

The Zebra Centre provides necessary services for children who have gone through abuse. It's a place for children to report what they've gone through and get the help they need. I hope that you can all help raise money for them.

I believe that it is of utmost importance for us to come together to change the status quo, to create a safe space for children to refer to for help, to educate the public on recognizing the signs of child abuse, and the ways to handle it.

really felt so bad after realizing I forgot about the 2020 Top Shots Thanksgiving Tortola 9 Ball.

Why? Because there is a group of Filipino cue artists competing.

I must admit. I was so engrossed with the Korean Drama shows on Netflix, which have so far, been the best way to keep myself entertained at home. But the result? I forgot about Jayson Handugan.

On September 30th, I marked it in my notebook but I forgot to set the alarm on my phone. So, there you go! Forgive me Jayson.

It's not that you are not my favorite Gandy "Sapsal" Valle, the 1998 Bangkok Asian games gold medalist, I just felt so bad about missing your tournament.

But I am happy to know that you were able to enter the Final Round.

I am happy to know that there’s a growing number of Filipino pool players in the province and that Top Shot has been providing them with a venue to compete.

So, if you noticed, the Filipino golfers in Alberta were in fiesta mode!

I got the chance to cover the fund-raising golf event of Corpus Christi Parish and then I learned that the annual Alberta Golf Tour was also being held.

It was a good thing that Jun Rocha informed us that their event would take place in Innisfail which 44 players from Edmonton and Calgary would take part in.

This Edmonton-Calgary rivalry actually has been going on for quite a good number of years now.

This year, Edmonton won the team event and individual awardees were also recognized.

Congratulations to Team Edmonton and hopefully, this sports columnist will get a chance to take photos of your tournament next year! *** By the way, if you are following the Canadian Elite Basketball League and the champion, Edmonton Stingers, they are now selling tickets for the 2021 season.

Others are funny because it describes Lebron James as too “ma arte” on the court and that Jimmy Butler does not get the same treatment from the referees.

For sentimental reasons, I root for the Miami Heat because the head coach is a Filipino-American, Erik Celino Spoelstra, whose mother is from Laguna Province in the Philippines.

My wife Marj is a die-hard L.A. Lakers fan.

At the end of the day, Filipinos enjoy the sport, post their no-

holds-barred comments on FB, criticize the referees’ calls and even the NBA commissioner.

That’s how crazy Pinoys are about basketball.

So, don’t be surprised if there are a lot of Pinoy basketball leagues in the province.

If not for this Covid-19, we are supposed to be in the gyms every weekend just to cover the leagues and enjoy the company of organizers like PSA president Gary Perpetua, Edson League chief organizer Rodel Gravides, Whitecourt League co-organizer Johnley Camposano, Cold Lake organizer Rey Nodado, among others.

Even Filipino volleyball leagues,

organized by the Volleyball Enthusiasts Association and the Filipino-Canadian Volleyball Association, are supposed to be played around this time too.

We just hope that the Covid-19 cases will go down in the months to come so that the regular basketball and volleyball leagues will resume in action! *** We hope all is well in the sports community and if you have sports tips and news, kindly email mocolumnist@albertafilipinojournal. com.

What a Trump re-election will mean for Canada AS the presidential election in the United States draws nearer, Americans are caught in a frenzy of campaigning. The world is being inundated with images of a raucous debate, a Covid-stricken president (and a virus-infested White House), and a political circus that almost puts Philippine politics to shame. As the world’s most powerful nation, the US casts a large shadow of influence across the globe. Judging by the events in the past three years, the world is on the edge of its seat.

F​ or Canada, the US presidential election in November would be a defining moment. The Trump administration has not been kind to Canada, to say the least. Ottawa has been victimized by a kind of boorish leadership in Washington that has impacted the north in so many ways.

The impudence of President Donald Trump, manifested so arrogantly on the issues of tariffs and national security, is a stark reminder that our neighbor in the south cannot be depended on, at least while the Republican president sits in the Oval Office. ​Although the latest episode in the US-Canada “teleserye” was the 10% tariff that President Trump imposed on Canadian aluminum that saw him blink and stand down, it cannot be denied that the unpredictability of his policies towards Canada creates uncertainty that impacts negatively on the Canadian economy.

American voters will ultimately be the ones to decide on his fitness to continue leading the US. But the prospect of another four years of a Trump presidency certainly sends shivers down many people’s bones. I don’t think Donald Trump has been good for America (except for the white supremacists, the ultra conservatives, and his cronies). I doubt he will be good for the world at large. ​And I am sure he will not be good for Canada as well. By virtue of geopolitics, the US and Canada have maintained a special relationship that has survived many American presidents, regardless of political party. And this relationship has survived because of a mutual respect for our respective interests. Donald Trump brought a kind of extremism in trade and economic policies that has run counter to everything that has worked for Canada in the past.

I don’t know if we can take much more of that.

Today’s gospel is the story of two sisters: Martha who is busy with the work of the Lord, and Mary who is more interested in knowing the Lord of the work. For Martha, the priority is service; for Mary however, her preference is being with the Lord. Friends, our service is meaningless if we keep comparing and complaining. Service is not a competition that we need to compare and show our performance.

Comparing and complaining are the two evils we need to get rid of.

Comparing and complaining are the two scary cancers that destroy our life. Folks, do not be drowned in the ocean of comparison.

Second, our service is empty if our priority is earthly and not heavenly.

Spiritual concerns are more valuable than material affairs. Many of us neglect our Sunday obligation

because of work. We choose to work and rob the time for God. Today, the gospel is reminding us: “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things. There is a need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part and it will not be taken from her.” Friends, decide to take the better part or else you will end up bitter.

Finally, work and prayer are not viewed as opposition but complementary. We need to work and we also need to pray, right? But please let us not compromise our prayer because of our work. Prayers should not be off even during our days-off. There is no such thing as being offline when it comes to prayer. Amidst the heavy demands of the earth don’t forget to answer the demands of heaven. Do not forget the Lord who gives you the life and energy to cultivate the earth. Friends, amidst our busy lifestyles let us not forget to develop a relationship with Jesus. In the midst of our hectic worldly pre-occupations of making a living we should never overlook the “the best part” that is listening to Jesus.

Friends, do not forget the Lord.

Parents and Grandparents Program to open on October 31, 2020 until November 3, 2020 The Government of Canada announced last October 5, 2020 the details for the opening of the 2020 Parents and Grandparents Program.

I’m sure lots of kababayans have been waiting for this announcement since January this year. I was hoping that they would change the intake system as the lottery system has received a lot of criticism in the past. Having said that, over a three week period starting at 12 PM EDT on October 13, 2020, and ending at 12PM EST on November 3, 2020, Canadians and permanent resident who wish to sponsor their parents and grandparents for permanent residence to Canada will have the opportunity to submit an interest to sponsor form online.

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will randomly select potential sponsors and send them an invitation to apply. If invited, applicants will have 60 days to submit their permanent residence application. IRCC reported that a maximum of 10,000 applications will be accepted for processing as part of the 2020 PGP intake. In 2021, IRCC will open a new intake of interest to sponsor forms to accept a total of 30,000 new applications.

Foreign nationals who are in Canada with a letter of introduction (LOI) after approval of a study or work permit application processed outside of Canada Are you in Canada and submitted an application for either a Study or Work permit outside Canada, received a positive decision on your application and a letter of approval or LOI? Due to Covid-19 travel restrictions, these foreign

nationals can’t leave and re-enter Canada to present their LOI for examination. Another way to describe this situation is to travel to a port of entry to flagpole or travel to another country and return. The Government of Canada introduced a temporary measure to allow these foreign nationals to request the conduct of examination and issuance of documents thru IRCC webform.

This temporary process will be in placed until March 31, 2021. If the officer is satisfied that the study or work permit requirements are still met, the document can be issued and will be mailed to the mailing address provided in the application.

Public Policy exempting certain visitors in Canada from immigration requirements Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) announced a public policy last August 24, 2020 that will allow visitors to apply for a work permit without leaving Canada. This temporary public policy will address certain employers in Canada who continue to face difficulties in finding workers as well as temporary residents who would like to contribute their labour and skills to Canada’s recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ph Consul General Hosts FilipinoCanadians Bound For UAAP, MPBL

Calgary – Philippine Consul General to Calgary Zaldy Patron hosted a lunch meeting on 3 October 2020 with five Calgary-based FilipinoCanadian basketball players who will play for the next seasons of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) and the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) in the Philippines.

Consul General Patron met with basketball players Alonzo Tan and Antonio Eusebio, who will play for the men’s basketball teams of the University of the Philippines,

brothers Terrence Crisostomo and Alfonso Crisostomo, who will suit up for the National University men’s basketball team, and Paul Gulfo, who will play for a still unnamed team in MPBL. The Crisostomo brothers were born in Manila while Mr. Eusebio hailed from Pampanga. Mr. Tan and Mr. Gulfo were both born in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

All four UAAP-bound players were high school graduates from Calgary and are currently enrolled and taking online classes in their

respective Philippine universities.

The five players are products of the Calgary D’ League, an athletic club that aims to produce local basketball talents. The league gives opportunities for its players to play in Calgary and in other parts of Canada.

Consul General Patron commended the five players for deciding to play in UAAP and MPBL. “I hope that you will inspire more Filipino-Canadians to excel in sports and consider playing in the Philippines,” he said.

Pinoy artist to open own tattoo studio on Oct. 24

Filipino tattoo artist will finally open his own studio on October 24.

Mark Osea learned how to tattoo in 2012 and joined Dragonfx Millwoods as their professional artist in 2015.

He continued his profession with Inkorporated Tattoo in 2016 and suited up for Golf Ocean in 2017.

Osea decided to finally open his own this year under his own brand, Inkronized Tattoo.

"Sa aking palagay po pero di ako sure, first tattoo shop owned by a Filipino po," said Osea.

His studio is located at 5165 55 Avenue NW in Edmonton and is open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Voluntary health measures in Edmonton Zone • Alberta’s government is implementing voluntary public health measures to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 in Edmonton Zone and protect the health of Albertans.

• Effective immediately, all residents and visitors to the Edmonton Zone should: o Limit their social and family gatherings to no more than 15 people. o Wear non-medical masks in all indoor work settings, except when alone in workspaces, such as offices or cubicles, and where separated from others or an appropriate barrier is in place. o Limit their number of cohorts to no more than three (a core/ household cohort; a school cohort; and one additional sport, social or other cohort). Young

children who attend child care could be part of four cohorts, given that child care cohorts have not shown a high-risk of spreading COVID-19.

• These additional public health measures are voluntary for the Edmonton Zone but strongly recommended.

• All existing guidance and public health orders remain in place.

• Alberta Health, Alberta Health Services and local partners in the Edmonton Zone will continue closely monitoring the spread in Edmonton and across the province to determine if additional recommendations should be made.

• All other health zones in the province must continue to follow the public health orders and guidance in place.

“JEWELS UNDER THE SADDLE” Once upon a time, what happened did happen.....or you wouldn't be hearing this story!!

A merchant on a casual jaunt through a market, came across a fine specimen of a camel for sale.

The merchant and the camel seller, both skilled negotiators, struck a hard bargain. The camel seller, pleased with his skill of worming

out what he felt was a very good price, parted with his camel and the merchant, chuffed that he had struck a fantastic bargain, proudly walked home with the latest addition to his large livestock.

On arriving home, the merchant called to his servant to come and help him take out the camel's saddle.

However, the unwieldy heavily padded saddle was too difficult for the servant to manage on his own.

Hidden under the saddle, the servant found a small velvet pouch which, upon opening, was revealed to be filled with precious jewels!!

The servant was overexcited!!!

"Master you bought a camel.....but

see what came FREE along with it!!!"

The merchant was astonished as he looked at the jewels in his servant’s palm. They were of extraordinary quality, sparkling and twinkling in the sunlight.

"I bought the camel" he said, "not the jewels. I must return them to the camel seller immediately."

The servant was aghast.....his master was really foolish. "Master..... no one will know."

But the merchant headed right back to the market and handed over the velvet pouch back to the camel seller.

The camel seller was very happy, "I had forgotten that I hid these jewels in the saddle for safe keeping."

"Here, choose one of the jewels for yourself, as a reward."

The merchant said "I paid a fair price for the camel and the camel only, so NO thank you, I do not need any reward."

But as much as the merchant refused, the camel seller insisted.

Finally the merchant said, sheepishly smiling, " Actually when I decided to bring the pouch back to you, I already took two of the most precious jewels and kept them for myself."

At this confession the camel seller was a bit flabbergasted and quickly emptied the pouch to count the jewels. However he was very confused.

"All my jewels are here. What jewels did you keep?

"The two most precious" said the merchant. *"My INTEGRITY and MY DIGNITY (SELF RESPECT)"* One Final Thought: I share Inspiring articles such as this to highlight the human value of INTEGRITY, since it has become a rare commodity. Corruption has become so deep-rooted everywhere and when one finds some rare instances of honesty and integrity, it must be highlighted so that more are inspired to become an honest citizen.

O

ne might think that setting up an ice cream store in one of the coldest places on earth is a crazy idea. As it turned out, this business idea was not so crazy after all.

In 2018, Ailynn Santos, an entrepreneur born of Filipino immigrants, put up a cute little ice cream store in Edmonton.

Her daughter loves ice cream and wanted an ice cream truck, so the whole family supported her idea.

They set up an ice cream store and named it Yelo'd, which came from "yelo," a Tagalog word for ice. As with the English language, some nouns are usually appended a "d" to make them into a verb, just as "Yelo'd" literally translates to "Iced." The English-Tagalog naming of the business reflects her Filipino immigrant heritage.

Ailynn's immigrant parents raised her to have the heart, the resilience and the values of a Filipino. At the same time, they taught her to have the strength and flexibility to adapt to Canadian culture. When they

started the business, their initial intention was to integrate Filipino flavours into their ice cream and introduce them to Canadians and other cultures. They did not expect that their business would cater more to the tastes of their fellow Filipinos.

Yelo'd is an ice cream business that is built on the Filipino immigrants' warmest love for family. Backed by the entrepreneurial education that Ailynn gained in the U.S. and

her previous bakeshop business experience in the same country, she and her family brought her daughter's idea to life. Apart from the colours and the sweet cravings of her daughter, Ailynn'shusband, Jason Wong, is actually the one who comes up with the ideas for the Filipino flavours for their ice cream. Her parents, Mr. Arturo and Mrs. Ofelia Santos, similarly take a huge part in running the business by preparing and cooking some of the ingredients themselves, such as ube, leche flan and monggo beans.

Although running a business is not an easy-breezy task for Ailynn, working and investing her time and effort with the people dear to her heart makes everything worthwhile.

As with all businesses, challenges are lurking around the cornerfor Ailynn's business. When the pandemic hit Canada, most of the businesses in the country slowed down. To cope with the situation, Yelo'd started ice cream deliveries in pints in addition to their usual soft-served ice cream.

Despite the pandemic and the usual slow-down of an ice cream business

during the winter, Yelo'd seems to still emerge as a success. According to Ailynn, their business's success comes from the increase in sales and popularity because of customer recommendations. Moreover, her work gets more fulfilling whenever she sees the smiles of their satisfied customers who are reminded of their childhood and their home in the Philippines. Unscathed by all these challenges, Ailynn and her family can say that their success is because "the cold never bothered them anyway."

IAN FERNANDEZ: Passionately Driven by a Dream "What would you like to be when you grow up?" This question from the grown-ups to a young child is so clichĂŠ, yet the answer to this question is one of the most challenging things for someone to figure out in their lifetime. From a young age, Ian Fernandez, the Director of Filipino Sales of Lexus, Edmonton, always thought about what he wanted in life, considering his father's strong influence, the love of his doting aunt, his mother's dream for him, and his own passion for cars.

As a child, Ian considered becoming an architect, a pilot, and even a priest.

However, his love for cars and nice things was initially influenced by his father, who drove a nice car while wearing a nice suit and tie, to work in a nice office. His loving aunt, too, inspired his love for cars by taking him to Clark Air Base in Pampanga, Philippines, so that he could ride with her as she sped her way down the road in her white sports car.

Because of his exposure to nice but fast and furious cars, he dreamt of

becoming a race car driver. Although fast, luxurious cars were his dream, his mother wanted him to pursue a medical field career. He then pursued his mother's dream by achieving a Bachelor's and a Master's Degree in Nursing in university, where he also worked as a clinical instructor. As a nurse, he still kept his love for cars in his heart.

Although Ian seemed to be used to a life of luxury, achieving his goals is not for the faint of heart. He knew that he would also encounter failures, and he would have to make sacrifices.

According to Ian, "One doesn't always end up as a winner. I believe that failure is just a rehearsal for achieving success." In his pursuit of what he truly loves, he also had to sacrifice his flourishing career as a nurse. He felt scared, but he courageously moved out of his comfort zone to pursue his love for cars here in Edmonton.

With no formal schooling in selling cars, he had to learn the ropes of the trade through his exposure to the automotive industry. While he currently

sits in his position as a Marketing Manager of Lexus, he continuously encounters challenges that he has to face courageously. He knew that selling expensive luxury cars, particularly to our kababayans, is difficult because Filipinos are used to a life of scarcity and frugality. However, he still believes that Filipinos deserve to live a life of "affordable luxury" because Lexus cars reflect the Filipino characteristics of dependability, strength, robustness, resilience, beauty and elegance. This belief and his excitement of chasing dreams and cars keep him successful in overcoming the challenges that he encounters.

Apart from Ian's passionate drive for driving cars, he also acknowledges the love from his family, fiancĂŠ, and friends and the management of Lexus of Edmonton. These people are the ones who are always there to guide, inspire and support him through his ups and downs. Because of them, he is continuously motivated to overcome, win, and overtake all the humps and bumps of this road called life.

ctober is here and with that comes autumn, cooler weather, pumpkin spice, and of course all things spooky.

Even though Halloween is not as celebrated in the Philippines as it is here in North America, Filipinos are no strangers to scary stories and the supernatural. Philippine folklore

is rich and hard to rival when it comes to creatures that go bump in the night. From kapres, to aswangs, to tiyanaks, to tikbalangs, to engkantos, and so much more, there is something for every nightmare.

These creatures take centre stage in the critically acclaimed horror graphic novel Trese. Set in Manila, Trese follows the adventures of Detective Alexandra Trese as she solves crimes with occult origins. In this grittier version of the Philippines’ capital, the crime world is filled with aswang-run kidnapping rings, thieving engkantos, and kapre kingpins. Written by Budjette Tan with striking, black-and-white, noir style art by Kajo Baldisimo, this masterfully crafted supernatural detective story is sure to leave a lasting impression on graphic novel and horror fans everywhere.

Like many Filipino stories, Trese came from humble beginnings. Starting with photocopied issues being sold for less than a dollar back in 2005, to gathering a cult following in the Philippines and being nominated and winning numerous National Book Awards and Filipino Readers’ Choice Awards, Trese has surely come a long way and it looks like it’s going even further. Trese will soon be taking on a more global stage. The graphic novels will see a North American release through Ablaze Publishing. The first volume will be available in November and can now be pre-ordered at bookstores and comic book shops. Trese is also getting a Netflix animated adaptation with Filipino-American Jay Oliva at the helm as Director and Executive Producer, and will reportedly feature Filipino voice actors. This will be a feat of Filipino and Filipino-American excellence. Stay tuned for these exciting releases and in the meantime, have a safe and spooktacular Halloween, and if you find yourself in the realm of the supernatural don’t forget to say “tabi tabi po.”

I also made my own ribbon skirt which I wore to the event. When I arrived, I asked one of the organizers if it is okay for me as a non-indigenous woman to wear one for the event. To my relief, they said yes!

One of the hosts asked the crowd, “How many of you are not indigenous?” I, and a number of people raised our hands.

It looked like we were 20 out of roughly 80 attendees. The crowd exploded into applause and they were appreciative that we were there. They said their dream is to have more non-Indigenous people attending and participating.

As I listened to the different performances and speeches, it just felt so right, and so appropriate. I realize that that's how things are supposed to work. It reminds me of where I grew up, Baguio City, and Benguet province, where

indigenous activities are the default as far as opening ceremonies and the aesthetics during public gatherings.

I just discovered the indigenous name for Edmonton: amiskwaciwaskahikan. It is actually easy to pronounce, after you read the syllable breakdown and listen to an audio guide a few times. Fellow Filipinos, when we hear a person complaining how difficult it is to pronounce, let's think about the different areas in the Philippines that also have challenging names from a foreigner’s perspective.

If we can handle that, pronouncing the indigenous name of our city should be achievable. Learning the new indigenous names of the different wards that were recently approved should be achievable.

I think it is important to know where this place came from and all the cultures continued on page 18 ►

I

grew up in the Philippines, in an area steeped in indigenous culture, specifically that of the Igorot. It is incredible to be immersed in it, as someone with Tagalog and Pangasinense heritage. From my village, the adjacent city, and the surrounding provinces, the culture of the indigenous peoples in the area is visible and well-preserved.

I remember when my parents and sister passed away; not only did we follow the Catholic burial traditions, but we also followed some of the indigenous customs in the area, such as canao because it is the way you do things.

For the past several years and months, one can witness a resurgence of this idea in Canadian cities and towns.

Last year, I was invited to an indigenous pipe ceremony as a sign of launching a partnership between an indigenous based organization and the not-for-profit organization I represent. The organizer explained the protocols for women who were attending. We were to wear a long skirt or a ribbon skirt if we have one, and the mechanics of the ceremony was explained to us. We were also cautioned to step back from doing certain parts of the ceremony if we were menstruating, otherwise called our “moon time”.

Last month, I attended an event called Walk a Mile in a Ribbon Skirt.

The goal was to increase awareness about the cultural attire, the history of how indigenous cultures were suppressed by the government at the time, and to celebrate their beautiful culture while emphasizing the current social and economic issues that Indigenous peoples face now. ulture Days 2020 was celebrated in Alberta for the whole month of September, which was also the Month of the Artist.

The national celebration of Culture Days, however, is always on the last weekend of September and for this year, extended to a whole month, September 25-October 25.

“Culture Days is the largest celebration of arts, heritage, diversity and community spirit, to increase awareness, accessibility, participation and engagement of Canadians in the arts and cultural life of their communities.”

This year, events presenting on Philippine art and culture were: “Hulaan Mo!”, “Historya 2” and “Show Your Colours”.

Hulaan Mo! was an online guessing game on Philippine art and culture - i.e. language, history, architecture, geography, cuisine,

Culture Days and Show Your Colours customs, traditions, and pop culture, presented by the Philippine Arts Council. Holding two sessions, it was a fun activity both as an introduction to Philippine culture and for deeper insight and learning, as discussions were held to provide cultural and historical context for the topics.

soft skill characteristic, and that being too compassionate leads to lower productivity and less profitability. It leads your mind away from the strong characteristics you think about in business like courage, strength, resilience, and risk taking. The two terms: business and compassion, seem at face value to be incompatible with each other.

One must dominate the other. The compassion side of the equation must be minimal and strategic to maximize the ability to turn a profit and run a business. If only I had a dollar for every time someone said, “I’m trying to run a business here!

Not a charity!”

It seems in the world of immigration these two terms are sometimes at odds with each other. As a practicing immigration consultant, I often see clients who complain about the dirty tricks of consultants who charge too much or communicate with them too little. The busines of immigration to some is a negative aspect to migrating to Canada. For a new migrant and their family, maneuvering the world of profit

first business agencies can be a lesson in anything but a positive experience in compassion. Even though most professionals are client focused and offer great services, the bad seems to always filter through the good, no matter how small.

Too many businesses fall short of representing their clients properly in favour of focusing more on their bottom line.

Hearing the experiences of others has certainly led me to evaluate how my immigration firm does business. How can we create a culture of compassion while also growing a profitable enterprise and turning positive results for our clients? How do we keep our focus on the needs of our clients?

How do we make compassion the centerpiece of our business model?

The answer? Redefine compassion!

First of all, what does compassion mean in the context of an immigration consulting firm? It means courage.

Commitment. Honesty and integrity.

It means treating our clients and their family like our own. Immigration is a human interaction business. We

do not just process immigration forms and write submission letters with supporting documents; we also facilitate dreams and aspirations.

We help people become better and stronger. We put families back together, as well as fix old wounds and build new opportunities. An immigration firm should stand as a beacon of opportunity for all to see and all to access. So perhaps redefining compassion in business is not just as simple as adding it to the mission statement, but rather pushing yourself to incorporate it in your client relations and your day-to-day interactions with people.

So that being said, the books need to balance. I get it. Believe me I get it more than most as a small business owner. The pressures of keeping your monthly income in the black can push itself to the top of your priority list. That is not a bad thing. Being a business owner does not mean you wear the scrooge hat and blast anything that does

not turn a margin! It means you have a particular interest in being innovative and being the best you can be for your clients and their families.

What matters is how you build the vehicle to keep your business in the growth zone month over month. You can build a profitable business in immigration THROUGH the concept of compassion. Compassion can be the vehicle to more business. I often get referral-based business simply because I am willing to work with my clients and give them options unique to their situation. The action of kindness and acceptance can be the vehicle to more profitability and volume in business. We can dispel the notion that business and compassion somehow do not fit together in the puzzle. Therefore, we should be compassionate in business, to build business, be profitable, and put our clients first. I believe that is the true definition of the business of compassion.

These rules are especially true for

the youth, so Solomon taught his son to avoid the evil influences and the sinful lifestyles of fools and rebels. Peer pressure is a powerful force. A wise father will protect his children from it, and he will teach his children against it.

LET US CONSIDER THE CONTEXT Solomon first introduced the purpose for Proverbs: instruction in wisdom (Proverbs 1:1-6). He then stated the key axioms of fearing God and obeying parents to achieve this goal (Proverbs 1:7-9). After that he gave a lengthy description of the temptations and dangers of fools (Proverbs 1:10-19). And he closed with a personification of wisdom as a woman appealing to young men to heed her advice and warnings, or else (Proverbs 1:20-33).

“My son, if sinners entice thee, consent thou not” (Proverbs 1:10). It is not “if” sinners will entice a young man, but rather “when.”

They will solicit him. They will offer advantages, if he will join them (Proverbs 1:11-14). But the consequences will be fatal to his desire and need to be wise and successful (Proverbs 1:15-19). My son, consent thou not!

Fools always seek others to join in their wickedness (Proverbs 1:10-19; 2:10-15). Whores entice men to enjoy illicit sexual pleasures (Proverbs 2:16-19; 5:3-21; 7:6-21; 9:13-18). A wise young man will reject both. He will keep friendships only with good and righteous men (Proverbs 2:20-21), knowing the judgment that is certain to come on the wicked (Proverbs 2:22).

CHRISTIANS ARE TO BE SEPARATED PEOPLE The reason is simple – the world hates God, truth, wisdom, and biblical righteousness. We must take a strong biblical stand on any subject, and we will soon know this by experience.

God, their Father, wants His people to love only Him and live only for Him. The world will do everything it can to keep us from this objective. Friendship with the world is enmity with God ( James 4:4; 1 John 2:15-17).

There is grave danger we are deceived because we either think we can survive a few worldly friendships, or we will not examine our life to see where we are allowing the world to entice us. The apostle Paul wrote forcefully, “Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners” (1 Corinthians 15:33). We will be corrupted; or more likely, we already are.

FRIENDS WITH A WORLDLY PHILOSOPHY WILL DESTROY US. They will influence us to reject a Holy God, to believe we are a product of evolution. That religious formality is sufficient. That love makes everything acceptable. That we should follow our own heart. That we should accept those differing from us.

That no one has all the truth. That confidence in a position is arrogant and divisive, or that God does not mind our sins.

In order to learn wisdom and follow righteousness, we must first avoid friendly fellowship with compromisers, fools, or sinners.

This is the basic requirement. We must also reject their lifestyles, for choosing their activities, attitudes, philosophies, and goals is just as corrupting and damning. Let us get away from them and their ways!

WHERE IS THE WORLD ENTICING US OR OUR CHILDREN? Here are a few tools or institutions to corrupt our love of God and righteousness: television and movies, music, public schools, contemporary churches, workmates, public opinion, friendly neighbors, bestseller books, lifestyles of the rich and famous, retail advertising, and fashion trends.

HOW IS THE WORLD ENTICING US OR OUR CHILDREN? Here are its top arguments to convince us that worldly friendships are acceptable: 1) They won’t really hurt us; 2) They are such nice people; 3) We need to be moderate; 4) We can agree to disagree on certain things; 5) We need them for professional success; 6) We need them for social success; 7) Limiting ourselves to church friends is too restrictive; 8) It is the only way we can win them to the truth; 9) They are better than many others; and 10) God loves us all equally just as we are. These are ten lies to destroy us.

If Wisdom and Success are important to us then we must avoid foolish persons, for they will destroy us (Proverbs 13:20; 14:7; 28:7). This is not an option; this is a commandment. How far should we get away? “Enter not into the path of the wicked, and go not in the way of evil men. Avoid it, pass

not by it, turn from it, and pass away” (Proverbs 4:14-15).

If Wisdom and Success are dear to us then we must associate with wise and successful persons.

Who are these people? They are good men by God’s definitions that fear Him and live wise and holy lives (Proverbs 13:20; Psalms 119:63; Titus 1:8).

Such friends can provide invaluable counsel and correction when we need them (Proverbs 15:22; 27:5-6,9-10,17). They will help us toward wisdom and righteousness, not away from it like worldly friends.

THIS PROVERB ALSO APPLIES TO RELIGIOUS ASSOCIATIONS. We must mark and avoid anyone differing with the apostle Paul’s gospel (Romans 16:17-18). And we may justifiably curse any that preach a different gospel (Galatians 1:6-9).

We are to withdraw from those that violate his apostolic tradition (2 Thessalonians 3:6; 1Timothy 6:3-5). And we are to turn away from contemporary Christians (2 Timothy 3:1-5).

Great religious compromise is here (2 Timothy 4:3-4). It is the duty of every believer to earnestly contend for the apostolic faith (Jude 1:3).

CONCLUSION Friends are good, if they are good friends; but good friends are only measured by their fear of God and righteous living. Where can you find such friends? In a true church of the Lord Jesus Christ, where the world and all its compromises and inventions are rejected. There the pure truth and wisdom of the apostolic gospel and the inspired scriptures are exalted, defended, and taught boldly and clearly. How do you stand regarding this rule?

are only considered a member of the community only if they are “good enough.” It is a society where people expect you to act in a specific way - in a standardized way. It is a society where you are forced to be someone you are not. It is a society where meeting the standards makes you an elite person. It is a society where you are encouraged to hide your own feelings and focus on reaching the bar. It’s okay to follow your own dreams; to be someone you want to be and not someone who society wants you to be. You are your own person. It is your life, and it is your choice. Block out society’s words.

Cover your ears and follow your dreams. As long as you are happy, then be that someone you want to be.

It’s okay to show your feelings, to show your sadness, your happiness, your fear and your anger. These are the things that build you as a person. We are not machines that are expected to be heartless. We are humans that can express every feeling we want to.

To be “good enough” or not does not decide whether we are an acceptable member of society.

Every person is unique. Some may be stronger. Some may be wiser.

Some may be better. Every person has a different story. However, the achievements and failures of other people do not predict the direction of our own lives. We are our own person and we shall build a story of our own.

Stop the Abuse of Authority JUST LISTEN

My favorite pastime is singing. I have always believed that life would be boring without music.

s politicians switch to digital and online political deliberations, I am not surprised to see abuse and actions like “Muted”.

Recently, the Finance committee led by Liberal MP Wayne Easter, who represents Malpeque, Prince Edward Island, muted Conservative

MP Pierre Poilievre of Calgary and shut down the finance committee meeting on the $900 Million We Charity Scandal without putting it into vote. Not only did MP Easter disrespect MP Poilievre but also MP Tamara Jansen of CloverdaleLangley City.

Muting someone without permission is like a slap to the person’s face. Is this total disrespect for a democratic process? The answer is yes and our elected officials should refrain from doing it, especially when they do not get the permission to do so. It is no different from censorship. I believe it was a very unethical move on the part of a public official, and I wonder if both affected MPs have filed an ethical complaint. If they haven’t , they should, because I honestly believe that the Chairman of a Committee should be fair, regardless of party affiliations.

Will Covid-19 end Trump’s presidential run?

I have two weekly columns -- "PerryScope" and "Balitang Kutsero." They're published in more than a dozen Filipino newspapers in five countries.

T

he news came in at 9:00 PM on October 1, 2020. “President Donald Trump tweets he Melania test positive for Covid-19.”

It was the most shocking news since Trump won the presidency in 2016.

It’s a staggering blow to Trump’s reelection campaign.

With 32 days left to Election Day, 14 days of which will keep Trump in quarantine, that would leave him with only 18 days to campaign until November 3, that is if he gets his health back after the quarantine period. The question is: Should he continue to run or should he quit?

But the following day, Trump was rushed to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in a helicopter to undergo tests. According to his spokesperson, Trump will stay in the hospital for just a “few days.”

The president has a low-grade fever, nasal congestion and a cough.

He received a promising but untested experimental drug from Regeneron to treat Covid-19.

In a brief video message upon his arrival at the hospital, he tweeted saying that he is “doing very well” and suggested that he was visiting the hospital only as a precaution.

However, there were reports that Trump was feeling very tired and very fatigued. According to his physician, Trump has been on supplemental oxygen on his first day at the hospital but has since been able to breathe. However, he’s not out of harm’s way yet.

According to a White House spokesman, he was not planning to transfer his authority to Vice President Mike Pence. “The president is in charge,” he said. And this puts the presidency in danger because if anything happens to Trump – say lose consciousness – and without transferring authority to Pence, it could put national security in peril.

National security Needless to say, it’s time like this that could give the Russians and Chinese – or Iran -- something to worry about. The prospect of accidental or intentional war is very high, which raises the question: What is Trump worried about? Can’t he trust Pence from taking over the presidency temporarily? Or perhaps,

he’s thinking that once Pence assumes presidential authority, what would prevent Pence from relinquishing the authority? Just thinking.

The presidential line of succession, laid out in a 1947 law, falls first to Pence. If he were to become too ill to carry out the duties of the president, the House speaker, Nancy Pelosi, would step in. Pelosi has been tested and is negative.

What about the nuclear football?

Who’s in charge of pressing the nuclear button if the need arises?

The nuclear football (also known atomic football, the president’s emergency satchel or black box) is a briefcase, the contents of which are to be used by the president to authorize a nuclear attack while away from fixed command centers, such as the White House Situation Room. It functions as a mobile hub in the strategic defense system of the U.S. It is held by an aide-de-camp.

If the president is in the hospital, the nuclear football is kept in the room accessible at any time. If presidential authority is transferred to Pence, the nuclear football is passed on to Pence.

Indeed, national security is of prime importance whenever the president is incapacitated to respond immediately to a geopolitical situation or – worse – an enemy nuclear attack. A rogue Russian, Chinese or Iranian general could start an attack. Well, you could say, “That’s not going to happen. It happens only in the movies.” But you need to remember the Cold War might have been over but nuclear weapons still pose immediate danger to world peace. And as long as the Russians and Chinese have their own nuclear football ready to go at anytime, the world will never be at peace. Call me crazy but that’s how I feel about it.

It’s been noted that dexamethasone should only be given to patients who require supplemental oxygen. He was also given a five-day course of the anti-viral remdesivir, which is supposed to shorten the period of care to 11 days.

I am not a medical professional but this information is available by googling the Internet.

If Trump would eventually end

up with these debilitating side effects, how can he continue to discharge the duties of president of the United States? For the sake of the country, it would be best for him to withdraw his candidacy. The American people deserve a healthy president who can execute his duties without the hindrance or interruption of lifethreatening diseases or conditions.

Campaign status Meanwhile, the campaign’s status

is questionable at this time. He’ll be in isolation for 14 days until October 15. But that doesn’t mean that he can go back to work immediately.

He’d still be recovering from the ill effects of Covid-19. And with just 18 days left to campaign until November 3, what are his options?

Of course, he can no longer downplay the pandemic as a “hoax” or “going away” when he himself is afflicted with the virus. Nobody would believe him. The virus is with us, killing thousands of Americans every day. And according to the vaccine manufacturers, the vaccine will not be ready for use until mid2021 at the earliest. How many more Americans will be dead by then?

Obviously, Trump’s contracting the virus will affect his reelection campaign. Without any valid explanation on how he’s going to deal with the pandemic this late in the game, he’s going to lose the election.

The question is: Is he going to continue with his presidential run or would it be best to quit? But at any rate, the election is over unless a miracle happens.

Premature discharge?

Last Saturday, October 3, Trump’s physician Dr. Sean Conley announced that Trump might be discharged by Monday, October 5. However, it seems that a discharge five days after he contracted the disease the disease is highly unusual and unlikely. But I can see where Trump is coming from. By trying to downplay the severity of the disease, he would take the change of going back to the White House where he can project that he has recovered. But the disease has an incubation period of 10 to 14 days, which means that the virus is still actively circulating in his body. And the virus could cause pulmonary fibrosis (which makes breathing difficult and there is no cure), kidney failure (which necessitates undergoing dialysis treatment), and congestive heart failure (which could lead to heart attack). Actually, since he was rushed to the hospital he had two episodes of using supplemental oxygen. He may be already in the early stages of pulmonary fibrosis. He was treated with dose of the experimental monoclonal antibody therapy cocktail made by the biotechnology company Regeneron. He was also treated with

M

otivation is a tool that can help individuals get ahead in life. It is the driving tool or goal that keeps us moving forward, as well as giving us an optimistic mindset. There are two types of motivation: self motivation and motivation by others.

Self motivated people find ways to complete certain tasks, and do not depend on other people to encourage them to perform it. On the other hand, motivation by others requires encouragement from others. Either way, motivation is important for the

overall development of an individual both physically and mentally. This is because it improves efficiency and the inclination to achieve a goal which leads to stability in one’s work.

As a student, motivation is important to keep me going in my everyday life. Without motivation, I would not be able to study and focus on my goals. I am self motivated, however, with the encouragement I receive from others, I am able to further move forward in order to achieve my future goals. Because motivation is a way to improve one's way of behaving, it is important to have it. With the overwhelming support I receive, I am able to accomplish many things such as becoming an honour student, and even getting into my first job.

However, I am aware that some people lack motivation due to the fear of failure. Almost in every situation, failure is pretty much evident; nonetheless, failure is the one key thing that helps us learn. In order to become successful, failure will come first. It is our job to not let failure rule us, but instead use it as a tool to help us learn and succeed—use it as motivation.

Failure is not a sign that we must quit, but to do better.

Without motivation, you are going to have a hard time achieving certain things in life; motivation

is an important skill to have as it helps you work towards your goals in order to make your dreams a reality. You may grow to realize that when you are not motivated, you are unable to complete certain tasks. For example, people dealing with certain mental illnesses such as depression may struggle to find the motivation that can help them do little tasks such as getting out of bed, taking a shower, or even doing things they used to love. However, that does not mean they will never find motivation. Finding motivation takes time and patience.

There are many ways to stay motivated such as reviewing your goals and progress. A great example of this is weight loss. When an individual starts working out, it may take a few days or weeks to notice a difference. However, once they see their progress whether it is big or small, they will become motivated to do better; this greatly boosts one's self esteem and allows them to continue to set new goals.

To keep motivated, you must keep thinking about what you want to achieve the next day, week, month, or even year. Thus, motivation will greatly help an individual to have a much healthier lifestyle, and a healthier mindset. If you are longing for SUCCESS, know that it starts with MOTIVATION.

Standing Together by ActionDignity On Sep 18, 2020 NorthSTAR , RAVE , GFL organized the virtual event— Standing Together: Celebrating Community Resilience— to celebrate ethnocultural community resilience during COVID-19.

The event celebrated the work of over 100 ActionDignity member

organizations, partners and community groups, their bravery and perseverance to support communities during this pandemic.

From food delivery, mask sewing to outreach to the homeless and strengthening people's technological capacity to stay connected, 35

participating community leaders shared their successes and tips to overcome challenges encountered during the difficult time.

After the event, ActionDignity distributed PPE packages to community groups and organizations that include adults and children facemasks and

hand sanitizers so that they can continue providing essential supplies to community members.

(Each box will contain 300 adult disposable masks, 300 kids’ disposable masks, 25 kids’ reusable masks and hand sanitizers).

CALGARY NEWS On the 26th of September , Saturday from 1:00 – 3:00 PM at Baker Park the Catalyst Community group conducted a Peer Support Initiatives event and the project title is “Victory over Pandemic”. It is a get together event that will inspire everyone on how families have overcome the effects of the Covid-19. The speaker (Vanesa Ortiz shared the different challenges encountered by families and how they were able to cope-up and manage it. Furthermore, The Action Dignity Society representative will also recognize volunteers who assisted in giving services and support to the Cargill workers and their families affected by this virus. Afterwards, a photo shoot of families will take place.

increases and improves engagement with services, and increases whole health and self-management.

One of the key benefits of Peer Support is the greater perceived empathy and respect that peer supporters are seen to have for the individuals they support. Peer Support also has benefits for peer support workers themselves, increasing levels of self-esteem, confidence and positive feelings that they are doing good. Especially to the Domestic violence victims during the pandemic time. The support groups project will gain knowledge to advocate domestic violence prevention with a supportive atmosphere through which to discuss their experiences and provide mutual help to other survivors or potential at risk, such groups have expanded in breadth and scope over time.

Mexican and Filipino peer support group. The Catalyst Community group and the Mexican community will share their experience and knowledge that will increase their own understanding to advocate the prevention of Domestic Violence which may lead to different risk factors such as Low=esteem, depression, aggressions, trauma or even mental illness especially during the Pandemic.

This peer support initiative tends to offer greater levels of self-efficacy, empowerment, and engagement.

This mechanism of benefit could come from the social connectedness experienced from interacting with peers, this will contribute as a preventive measure for domestic violence who are developing anxiety & depression due to the pandemic which would help to build healthy relationships and strengthen the peer support program of the Catalyst Community Group in the communities.
