he year is almost ending and the "Ber" months are on the air.

The busy holiday months are fast approaching and Alberta Filipino Journal found a time to host a dinner and karaoke evening for the staff and columnists of the Journal, Wednesday September 27, 2017. It was an evening of 'bonding" as some of the columnists and staff have not met each other yet.

ASET OR APEGA, What is my First Step?

n the last month’s issue of the Alberta Filipino Journal, I discussed on how you will qualify your Engineering experience earned elsewhere. By now, an individual should decide the quality of his/ her experience whether it will be on a Technologist or Professional Level.

The Table below identifies the different membership classification for either both ASET (The Association of Science and Engineering Technology Professionals of Alberta) or the APEGA (Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientist of Alberta).

What is your First Step?

For ASET application, you must become a CET by providing the original or true copies of your third party academic assessment.

The academic assessment can be done either by IQAS (International Qualification Assessment). More information on the detailed application process can be found at https://www.alberta.ca/iqas-employmenteducation-licensure.aspx.

For federal skilled immigrant in Canada who have their credential evaluated by WES (World Education Services), same original copy of credential evaluation can be used for this purpose. If you choose to use the WES for your credential evaluation, you can found the detailed procedure and by-country requirements at: https://www.wes.org/ca/requireddocuments.

For APEGA application, you have to register online in the APEGA’s Self-Service Center and receive your ID number. Follow the instructions to continue to the World Education Services (WES) website for the next step of the application process.

Follow the instructions provided by WES in the WES website. If you already have an evaluation report from WES that you obtained before when you applied for CIC immigration application, you may need to upgrade that report to an International Credential Advantage Package (ICAP).

WES will send the completed evaluation report to directly to APEGA digitally.

Physical copies will not be accepted.

Love for Humanity

Issues of social justice are factors that can cause people to suffer and might cause them to be maltreated. As a youth and as a student, I want to see that all the kids in our society would have their smile on their faces and laughter on their lips. Franklin D. Roosevelt said that,” We cannot always build a future for our youth, but we can always build our youth for the future”.

I, myself, am a youth who have the responsibility to make the world keep going. The youths are important because they are the hope of our future.

There are many issues of social justice happening around the world, here are some of the issues that involve social justice: Poverty: an issue that needs to be paid more attention to. People die from hunger every day; seeking and asking for help all day. They suffer yet pray every night for food and a comfortable shelter to live in. Civil Rights: people may suffer from racism and sexism these are inevitable.

People around the world are equal - every person is created by God in His image and likeness.

So, God created us co-equal. No matter what our sex is, no matter what our race is, we are called to be united with equity and impartiality.

Access to education: there are millions of kids who cannot go to school because of their accessibility to it. Some kids have to cross rivers and valleys just to go to their school. They have

to wake up early in the morning just to get prepared for school then walk a couple of hours to get there.

Access to health care: some people die from sickness because they lack accessibility to a hospital or a clinic. People might be required to treat themselves in the way they know how to because medical hospitals are not accessible to them. Our health is more important than any other things because how can we do things if we are already dead? People from remote areas might not have hospitals nearby and because of that, people die.

That is why we should put more attention to these kinds of issues because people might suffer longer.

Our community suffers from these kinds of issues that need to be resolved. One major thing that I could do to help resolve the problem is to study hard and work hard. It is because when we grow up and get brilliant jobs, we can help the people who are suffering, the needy and the poor. Nelson Mandela said that,” Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” I believe that education is a vital thing for our life because without education, there would be no professions like doctors, engineers, scientists, teachers, and pilots. That is why, we should start helping the people suffering by studying hard so we could make the world change for the good, the better and the best.

Arts and Culture: From Folk Creativity to Modern Consumption

N

othing has evolved without the stain of arts and culture.

From the molecule to atom, from point to point, elsewhere and everywhere; everything can be coloured and shaped either by abstraction or imagination.

Imagination is the handmaid of art. Art is carrier of fashion. One gets attracted to another because of art. A lover may not only express his feelings in letters or in simple words; he always has a good reason to compose a poem or song to recite and sing in front of the lady he most loved. Different individuals, various artists and varied arts become one because of culture, as it is the binding force and value-carrier. Language, on the other hand, that culture is transmitted via educationâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;the prime agent of change.

In any order, the terms arts, culture, language, and education are inter-dependent with each other.

No fashion is concomitantly similar to all generations and cultural

orientations. Evolution conquers all the fashions. Uniqueness rather than ubiquity is the father of antiquity. For instance, the advent of an i-phone 7 plus or a Samsung Galaxy had outdated all other cellphones being manufactured in just a matter of one or two years.

As a matter of fact, one country may not even have introduced yet what the other country has already been having and enjoying. Does this mean that the other is dominantly artistic or fashionable than the other? Can someone be automatically called out-of-fashion when he embraced antiquity and is using a 3210 Nokia Cellphone? (In our language, so baduy!) What is the trend then?

Folk Creativity: The Work of Art In Ancient times, most products were hand-crafted. Hand-woven or knitted clothes, scarfs, blankets were famous products. And therefore, the works of art. Through the work of art, no two things are alike.

Modern Consumption: The Work of Machine However, in moderncontemporary times, these methods are changed with the new technology. Most of the products nowadays are machine-made.

Through the work of machine, everything is the same.

Mass Productions!

There smells like something fishy. A significant relationship then between economics and population is conspicuously observed here: â&#x20AC;&#x153;When the supply increases; the demand decreases and vice versa.â&#x20AC;?

Manufacturers have utilized the â&#x20AC;&#x153;one size fits all or unisexâ&#x20AC;? system of production. Other businessmen even got the famous actors and actresses to wear, use, or endorse their products so they can easily influence the consumers to buy even if the clothes they are getting, for instance, do not match with their looks and sizes. In the last analysis, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s so easy to make money through mass production. Where is the creativity then? The only creative I can see in this process is the one who invented the machine but not the machine-made products.

Promoting the Future without relinquishing the Past â&#x20AC;&#x153;Past is past,â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Let bygone be bygone,â&#x20AC;? and â&#x20AC;&#x153;What has been done cannot be undone,â&#x20AC;? are all brokenheartedâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s favourite battle cry. They always wanted the painful past be buried into oblivion. Which, I think, is understandable because of the painfulness the past may bring. In this sense, forgetting what unreasonably hurts someone should not be dragged into the present.

However, always develop the habit of bringing the lessons of the past into the present. Hence, whatever had painfully and objectively been in existence may be coloured with every artistâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s perspectives. Let the object of the past be painted and improved from different angles and eventually be appreciated by different cultures.

o you believe that all religions lead to the True and Living God? Before answering this question, a word of caution is in order: Anyone who answers NO may well be ostracized for being narrow-minded, intolerant, or even being labeled as an Islamophobe. That being said, my answer is, "No, not all religions lead to the True and Living God, and it is incorrect and illogical to maintain that they do."

When we begin to examine world religions such as Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Islam, you will immediately recognize that they directly contradict one another. For example, Moses taught that there is only one God; Krishna believed in many gods; Buddha was agnostic; and Mohammed was

immoral. Logically, they can all be wrong but they can't all be right.

Looking into our text, we observe: Neither is there salvation - The word "salvation" properly denotes any "preservation," or keeping anything in a "safe" state; a preserving from harm. It signifies, also, deliverance from any evil of body or mind; from pain, sickness, danger, etc., (Acts 7:25). But it is in the New Testament applied particularly to the work which the Messiah came to do, "to seek and to save that which was lost," (Luke 19:10). This work refers primarily to a deliverance of the soul from sin (Matthew 1:21; Acts 5:31; Luke 4:18; Romans 8:21; Galatians 5:1).

While it is true that there may be ordinances being amended and ratified in the past 20 or 50 years yet still useful until the present; it is also true that there may be freshly ratified bills but not truly attend to the welfare of the society. For artâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sake, letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s all promote growth and development simultaneously. If we want a bountiful harvest, we have to plant and nurture the old -rotten seeds.

For there is none other name - This is an explanation of what he had said in the previous part of the verse. The word "name" here is used to denote "the person himself" (i. e., There is no other being or person.)

As we would say, there is no one who can save but Jesus Christ.

That there is no other Saviour, or Mediator between God and man, is abundantly taught in the New Testament; and it is, indeed, the main design of revelation to prove this.

Under heaven - This expression does not materially differ from the one immediately following, "among men." They are designed to express with emphasis the sentiment that salvation is to be obtained in "Christ alone," and not in any patriarch, or prophet, or teacher, or king, or in any false Messiah.

Given - In this word it is implied that "salvation" has its origin in God; that a Saviour for people must be given by Him; and that salvation cannot be originated by any power among people. The Lord Jesus is thus uniformly represented as given or appointed by God for this great purpose ( John 3:16; 17:3-4). Hence, Christ is called the "unspeakable gift" of God (2 Corinthians 9:15).

Whereby we must be saved - By which it is fit, or proper, that we should be saved. There is no other way of salvation that is adapted to the great object contemplated, and therefore, if saved, it must be in this way and by this plan. The schemes of people's own devices are not adapted to the purpose, and therefore cannot save. The doctrine that people can be saved only by Jesus Christ is abundantly taught in the Scriptures. To show the failure of all other schemes of religion was the great design of the first part of the Epistle to the Romans.

Please! Hands on the Wheel, not on Cell Phones and other things!

Giselle General came from the cold, mountainous region on the Benguet province, and immigrated to Canada as a teenager in 2007. She channels her creativity by writing in her personal blog, General Point of View, and has recently published a book of her poems and artwork titled The Humanity of Me.

D

uring lunch at work today, one of my colleagues is talking about a vehicle collision she experienced. She said that when she left her car to speak to the driver of the other car, the driver came out, cellphone on hand.

This resulted to her suspecting that the driver may have been texting while driving and did not react on time, which resulted to the poorly timed turn and hitting their own car.

I was crossing an unmarked crosswalk on a T intersection from our neighbourhood park to the next row of houses. There is a stop sign, so drivers need to stop before deciding whether to turn left or right. I am proactive when

crossing the street so I paused, watched the car closely, ensure they see me, before crossing. The car did not stop completely, and during the slow pause, there it is. The driver has one hand on a cellphone and their eye on it and not on the road. I continued looking at this driver and he waved I guess something like an apology before proceeding, instead on stopping and waving for me to cross.

I take the bus every single day to work. Being seated in a slightly more elevated position, I can easily look at the window and count how many drivers have their phones on one hand while the other on the wheel.

Many times, they would have it

on their lap instead, where they would grab it as soon as the light turns red. I suppose they would be either browsing social media apps or texting, and they would do it with both hands! And then when the light turns green, which they wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t notice right away, they would be a few seconds of delay before they drop the phone back to their lap and move on forward.

I wish this is only a driver or two, but it is so frequent itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s terrifying for me.

Several times when I have visited my in-laws for dinner, we would watch episodes of Canadaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Worst Driver. The video clips would show the behaviours that the candidates have that pushed a love one to take them to this â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;driverâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s rehabâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;. It ranges from texting and taking calls, applying make up, being too anxious and not being able to control their emotions and fears when driving, or not following driving rules and etiquette. I wished that these behaviours are only exhibited by these â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;rareâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; individuals that makes reality TV interesting. But alas, it is not the case.

I ask you to play a proactive part in stopping this incredibly harmful behaviour.

According to a CAA report, these are how many more times that drivers are more likely to be in a crash or near collision event

An interactive webpage showed the corresponding text messages sent and received by the driverâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s cellphone and the points in the road leading to the crash. It was clear that there were multiple messages that were coming in, which demonstrates that the driver was using their phone.

Three teenagers in the vehicle died.

I think it is worthwhile to reduce the likelihood of preventable accidents for the

benefit of our love ones who may be driving, be a pedestrian, or passengers in our vehicles.

Having someone get really hurt, or worse, pass away because of a collision from distracted driving is unnecessary. No number of re-tweets or social media comments will provide adequate comfort from a broken bone or a fender bender. Whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a few minutes of trying to save time by eating while driving, if because of having to suddenly break for not noticing an unexpected bunny crossing the road, your food gets spilled all over the seat and your shoulder now hurts from having to brake?

Please place your phone on Bluetooth, apply your lipstick in your bathroom door not the carâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s mirror, and plan to have breakfast in the dining table or at work, instead of behind the wheel. These â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;multitaskingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; attempt is simply not worth it.

Why JASON KENNEY? For almost three decades Jason Kenney has devoted his life to public service. His passion is “to renew Canada’s promise as

a land of opportunity …and the envy of the world”. His focus is unity not division.

He was the longest-serving Minister of Citizenship and Immigration, during which time he implemented fundamental reforms to help new Canadians succeed while strengthening the fairness and integrity of the system. During this period the Philippines became Canada’s top source country for immigrants; and permanent residency for Filipinos increased by 187%.

In 2006 Filipinos accounted for 7% of all permanent residency approvals. The Philippines ranked #3 (17,717), approximately half that of #1 which is China with 33,080.

By 2015, the Conservatives last year in office, Filipinos accounted for 18.7% of

permanent residency approvals.

The Philippines was easily the #1 (50,846) source country; with India at #2 (39,530).

It is an apt term for this event conceptualized as part of the Alberta Culture Days Celebration 2017. KALINANGAN featured a series of workshops that provided first-hand experience on Philippine dance, music, visual

arts, martial arts, among others.

The Honourable Christina Gray, MLA for EdmontonMillwoods, dropped by to participate in a dance workshop on Filipino cultural dances.

People of all ages had a fun time experiencing the various workshops prepared by the Council for free with the support of the Alberta Culture and Tourism.

E

verything that exists is a being. To understand â&#x20AC;&#x153;beingâ&#x20AC;? is to go outside of it and look at it from a distance. But, it does not mean that this has to be actually experienced in order to be understood. For instance, to take a complete view of an object, it does not have to be inside your eyes. Our visual senses work well if enough distance is being observed. In that manner, we can really see the truthfulness, oneness, and most of all, the beauty of an object.

These TOB (Truth-ness, Oneness, Beauty-ness), are metaphysically known as the attributes of being.

In the first place, there is no nothingness, nothing is missing, nothing can be reputed, yet, there are things that cannot just be grasped by our naked eyes and fully understood by our limited minds. They are merely beyond our capacity to sense or understand. Second metaphysical doctrine is about oneness or unity of being: there is no dichotomy between or among existing substantial forms in this world; nothing in this world is separateâ&#x20AC;&#x201D; distances never separate--not even frictions or factions. Third, there is nothing objectively ugly--only things that do not match with our tactual, gustatory, olfactory, and visual senses. In the last analysis, nothing evolves from negative evil nor derived from the false or heretic, disunited or divided, and ugly or defective Creatorâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;the Supreme Good.

Indeed, we, human beings, are endowed with the gift of life and sharing such supremacy. This privilege is what we called the

determining factor or philosophical accident. In logic, this is what we call the relationship between genus and differentia (specific difference). We are the only beings who have the capacity to know that we do not know. Meaning, we are certain about our uncertainty. And, because of that, we submit our lives to the Supreme-Giver of Life. To the One who exactly knows when to take back, where to get, how long, and what kind of life-anddeath we are going to enjoy.

I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t believe that life is a problem to be solved; rather, it is a gift to be enjoyed. Death is just a privation of life. That is why, we have to enjoy life while we are still alive. Because, we cannot both dead and alive at the same time. Similar to a door which cannot be openand-closed at the same time and at the same respect. For Buddha: Life is suffering. Life, according to Scott Peck: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Life is difficult. They both believed that lifeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sufferings and difficulties are the great truths.

Yet, once we truly know that life is difficultâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;once we truly understand and accept itâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;then life is no longer difficult.â&#x20AC;?

Nevertheless, death, I would say is a gift. It is beautiful, and needs to be appreciated. If and only if we understand what it is. I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know if you would accept my points of view. That, death gives us the chance to anticipate and look forward to what better kind of life is ahead of usâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;the afterlife or shall I say life after death. To some extent, the fear of death prompted us to respect other human beingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s lives on the street when we are

driving. Of course, we are hopeful that there is always a karmic effect to whatever action we take. We are also aiming for an Eternal Happiness. Otherwise, if a person does not have the conviction that there is a reward and punishment in the end, then, there is a tendency that he would be acting horrendously.

Other points to consider about the reality and the beauty of death: Ë&#x2018; *U JT B DFMFCSBUJPO Filipinos have different styles of mourning. In some areas in Bicol Region, the bereaved use to having a disco party while mourning.

Similar to what is being practised in some areas in Laguna Province; they are hiring musicians (orchestra), to play good tunes while mourning. Believing that the deceased has already joined the Creator, which for them is really nice to celebrate. The funeral is more actively participated rather than to a wedding and birthday celebrations.

t was with deep sadness and sympathy with the passing of Mr. Val Jimenez, the husband of Ms. Lydia Jimenez of Palabok House .

He passed away peacefully last September 30, 2017 at the age of 50. In behalf of the staff of Alberta Filipino Journal our condolences to Lydia, Valerie and family, may the Good Lord give them comfort and strength to cope up with this heart-breaking loss of Val.

We just disseminate the information about the death of someone we loved, and we just leave the decision to our fellows and folks to attend to the wake. During the vigil, people, regardless of religious groups, political parties, even those who have been having feuds and conflicts between each other are coming over to pay homage to the wake of our beloved dead.

This occasion is most of the time an avenue to settle the conflicts between the adversaries. This is good and beautiful. continued on page 16

George Smash and GG Hawks made it to the record books as the first men's and women's champions, respectively of the recently-concluded First Alberta Filipino Volleyball Club (AFVC) Tournament in Edmonton.

George Smash, bannered by Justine Roxas, Kris Sac, Christian De Vera, Tyler North, Teodor Tolesnik, Alvin Lomboy, Remar Villanueva, Franz Gacutan and Erwin Galgo, defeated the visiting Victoria, BC team in four sets, 3-1.

Faith Shared Is Fate Paired Katrina is a Grade 10 Student of St. Francis of Assisi Senior High School in Edmonton.

Her hobbies includes playing violin, photography and sketching.

After her father took his family to Rome to make peace, Emperor Diocletian fell in love with Philomena. When she refused to marry him, she was subjected to torture.

Little is known about the life of St. Philomena. However, it is believed she was a Greek princess who became a virgin martyr and died at 13-years-old.

Remains of a young lady were discovered in May 1802 at the Catacombs of Priscilla on the Via Salaria Nova with three tiles reading "Peace be to you, Philomena."

St. Philomena was scourged, drowned with an anchor attached to her, and shot with arrows. Each time she was attacked angels took to her side and healed her through prayer.

Finally, the Emperor had Philomena decapitated. According to the story, her death came on a Friday at three in the afternoon, the same as Jesus.

All that is known about St. Philomena's life comes from a Neapolitan nun's vision. Sister Maria Luisa di Gesu claims St. Philomena came to her and told her she was the daughter of a Greek king who converted to Christianity. When Philomena was 13-years-old, she took a vow of consecrated virginity.

Two anchors, three arrows, a palm symbol of martyrdom, and a flower were found on the tiles in her tomb, interpreted as symbols of her martyrdom.

The nun's account states Philomena was born on January 10 and was killed on August 10.

Devotion for Philomena began to spread once her bones were exhumed and miracles began to occur. Canon Francesco De Lucia of Mugnano del Cardinale received relics of St. Philomena and had them placed in the Church of Our Lady of Grace in Mugnano, Italy.

Soon after her relics were enshrined, cancers were cured, wounds were healed and the Miracle of Mugnano, when Venerable Pauline Jaricot was cured of a severe heart issue overnight, were all attributed to St. Philomena.

Other Saints began to venerate Philomena and attributing miracles in their lives to the young martyr, including St. John Marie Vianney and St. Peter Louis Marie Chanel.

Although controversy sometimes surrounds the truth behind St. Philomena's life and sainthood, many believers all around the world continue to see her as a miraculous saint, canonized in 1837.

St. Philomena is the patron saint of infants, babies, and youth. She is often depicted in her youth with a flower crown, a palm of martyrdom, arrows, or an anchor.

ABUHAY! Its my first article and would like to thank first and foremost Mr. Jun Angeles and his staff for giving me this opportunity to reach out to our kababayans.

It has been on a daily basis that I meet Filipinos who are either overweight or obese.

Diabetes, hypertension, gout and heart disease tops the list of problems I see everyday. There's a high incidence of these amongst us Filipinos. Where else will get these from? Our preference to

meat, fatty foods and rice three times a day.

"Mahirap kase Dok! Ang sarap kase eh!" This is our weaknessfood--unhealthy food.

What's the first thing that you'll see on the table during the Filipino parties and gatherings?

Kare-kare, dinuguan, sisig, and bopis. And, to warm you up, we have papaitan. Rarely will you see a vegetable salad or dip. Our diet obviously dates back to our culture which we need to change.

When I was in a process of going to Canada, I went through these elements to survive whatever consequences come my way. Meet Doctor Joel Ventura San Agustin a Practicing Family Physician in Edmonton Doc Joel has always wanted to become a Doctor since he was ten (10) years old. A promise he made for himself and he kept that promise. His strong desire to serve people is his motivation to pursue his profession. As he grew older he realized that there’s so many things Filipinos must change in terms of health habits. He grew up from a middle class family and there’s always this uncertainty whether his parents could financially support him thru medical school. He took up Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Centro Escolar University in Manila at least it is still in the medical field. He finished Medicine at UERMMMC in Manila in 2000 and passed the medical board examination two years after.

Doc Joel migrated to the United Kingdom in 2004 and worked as a Charge Nurse from 2004 to 2006. With his strong desire to practice Medicine he went to medical training from 2006 to 2009. Completed his residency training in Family Medicine / General Practice in 2012 with a special interest in Palliative Medicine and Mental Health.

He and his family migrated to Canada in 2015 and passed the membership exams from the College of Family Medicine with flying colors same year. He faced so many challenges before practicing as a Family Physician in Canada. “It is quite daunting, and I’m very sure that every IT’S YOUR FAITH IN GOD AND FAITH IN Filipino doctor practicing abroad will say the same. You YOURSELF, YOUR DETERMINATION AND need to overcome physical, mental and spiritual challenges. DESIRE TO SUCCEED.”

Doc Joel has been working as a Family Physician since June 2015 in Canada and he feels most accomplished whenever he sees his patients happy and treated, as what most doctors feel.

His fulfilment lies in knowing that his family, his wife and two children and his parents are proud of what he does and what he has done for people.

“What I’m most proud of in life is my family. Raising a family is no easy task sometimes we overlook that. We often look at our degrees and diplomas and our material accomplishments. For me what matters the most is the people around you, the people that loves you”.

Born on September 18, 1973 Doc Joel is happily married to Janette San Agustin and they have two children Liam who is 12 years old and Julia, 9 years old. He loves to travel and plays table tennis and snowboarding.

In June this year Doc Joel together with three other partners built the First Filipino owned medical clinic called Medicus Family Health Clinic where he serves as the Medical Director.

They perform minor procedures at the clinic such as excisions/ circumcisions and specializes in mental health and palliative care management.

n October 1st the Alberta minimum wage went up to $13.60 from $12.20 an hour. This is expected to go up again on October 2018. This is part of the current NDP government’s promise to ensure that workers will earn enough for their day-to-day needs. In an interview with CBC on September of last year Labour Minister Cristina Gray said “"We are committed to supporting to our low-wage Albertans, people who are working full-time jobs and are still not able to make ends meet," However, Business and industry groups and opposition have been critical. The United Conservative Party (UCP) were concerned that this will cost lots of jobs by putting pressure on wages across the board.

That it might force some employers to cut workers' hours or terminate their employment. The Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) in Alberta has led the opposition to the wage increases. They argue that the raise will result in a loss of between 50,000 to 180,000 jobs, due to increased costs to employers. And, they say, it won’t reduce poverty.

Let me answer some of the myth on minimum wage.

Myth: Raising the minimum wage will hurt the economy FACT: Many economists support higher minimum wages. In May 2014, The Economist, a British financial magazine, said that it had been wrong in opposing minimum wage increases: “No-one who has studied the effects of Britain’s minimum wage now thinks it has raised unemployment.” There is little evidence to show that raising the minimum wage hurts the economy.

Raising the minimum wage is good for the economy. When workers have more money in their pockets, they tend to spend it in their communities. Higher wages means workers have the income necessary to support local businesses.

Supporting local businesses strengthens the economy and stimulates employment. Clearly, what small businesses need most are customers; that’s why raising the minimum wage now would make good economic sense.

Customers create jobs.

Businesses hire more staff only when they need to provide more services or make more things to sell.

That’s why workers with money to spend on goods and services are the real job creators. In fact, consumer and household spending (the spending made possible due to wages) supports more than half of

Canada’s total economic output. In other words our ability to spend money on goods and services keeps Alberta’s economy afloat. Its good for our economy.

Myth: Raising the minimum wage will just make everything more expensive FACT: According to Statistics Canada, between 1975 and 2013 after adjusting for the effects of rising prices, the minimum wage increased by only one single penny.

Yet the prices of food and housing have increased much faster. For example, between 1980 and 2010, average home prices increased 400% faster than after tax income.

Between 2007 and 2012, the price of food increased nearly twice as fast (19%) as other goods (10.7%) and about four times faster than average wages (5%).Increases in the price of food and housing hurt low-income workers more because such workers need to spend a higher proportion of their wages on shelter and food. This means that the historical increase in prices of food, shelter and products have a very little to do with wage increase.

MYTH: Raising the minimum wage will cost low-wage workers their jobs.

FACT: there is resounding evidence that raising the minimum wage is not a major job-killer. Economists doing cutting-edge studies have found that the typical minimum wage increase does not cause overall job loss. They say “job loss is more of a threat than a theory.” There are lots of reasons why a higher minimum wage would not affect job numbers.

First, economies around the world, including Canada, are still stagnating after the last financial crisis. The rich keep churning billions from higher real estate and stock prices, but little of this money goes into the local economy and productive investment. In contrast, low-wage workers spend most of their money in their communities.

A $15 minimum wage would pump billions of dollars into the Alberta economy, thus stimulating new demand and creating jobs, even if some businesses that could only function by paying poverty wages had to (rightfully!) cut back with better employers taking their place.

Raising the minimum wage also has lots of effects on the job.

When the minimum wage goes up, workers become more valuable to businesses and jobs generally get better. Workers get more training and there is less turnover.

Businesses can put more energy into raising efficiency.

MYTH: Raising the minimum wage will hurt small business.

FACT: The local economy benefits

Manila FAME, the Philippines’ premier lifestyle and design event, is set to make waves again among international and local buyers as it returns on October 20-22 with a range of new show features and artisans in a showcase of the country’s rich cultural heritage and design ingenuity.

The 66th edition of Manila FAME will strip down to its roots to present a show built upon the intertwine of the country’s rich cultural heritage and design excellence and the promotion of Philippine products. Artisans from across the country will showcase their best products at the World Trade Center Metro Manila and the Philippine Trade and Training Center in Pasay City across the three-day event.

New Generation Weaves, a staple of Manila FAME for the past three editions, will return with Paris-based design specialist Nelson Sepulveda at the helm. The conservative view is that increases in minimum wages raise the price of labour and thus result in less employment. On the contrary, higher minimum wages can actually be good for business. he Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations (IRPR) will change the definition of Dependent child to less than 22 years old. This will take effect in October 24, 2017. Since August 1, 2014, the maximum age has been under 19 years old.

However there important points for kababayans to know before submitting an application to Sponsor a Dependent Child.

- The change in age affects all immigration categories (like Family Class sponsorships, Dependents of Caregivers, Privately Sponsored Refugees, Government Assisted Refugees and every other category).

- The change in age only applies to applications for permanent residence made on October 24, 2017 or beyond. It does not apply to any applications in process at the time of the change.

- The rules about â&#x20AC;&#x153;lock-in-datesâ&#x20AC;? for the age of dependents continue to apply. There are instances when the age of the dependent child may be â&#x20AC;&#x153;locked inâ&#x20AC;? at a date before the permanent residence application.

- If you have completed the first step of a relevant multi-step process before August 1, 2014 then you are subject to the pre-August 2014 rules regarding dependent children.

There are people who would be negatively affected by the fact that the change in Regulations does not apply to permanent residence applications that are already in process. This will include people who: - Have submitted, or about to submit, a permanent residence application; and

- Have a child who does not currently meet the definition of family member, but will following the change in October 24, 2017 I would like to suggest the following (Pls note these are my personal recommendations as a Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultant): - You may delay the submission of application for permanent residence until Oct 24, 2017 or after; - You can also withdraw your application and re-apply on or after October 24, 2017; - Request the addition of the dependent child to the application on humanitarian grounds; - Or wait for processing to be completed and then submit a Family Class application before the child turns 22 years old.

Other important information: - Dependent Children must be single.

If the young adult marries or enters into a common law relationship, he/ she no longer meets the definition of Dependent Child.

- There is NO reinstatement of the exception for GVMM UJNF TUVEFOUT Prior to August 2014, the regulations allowed older children to count as dependent children if they were full-

time students. That exception has NOT been reinstated.

However, people who completed the first step of multistep processes before 1 August 2014 continue to be able to benefit from the pre-august 2014 rules, including the exception for full-time students.

It is the time to investigate our own lives. Socrates said: â&#x20AC;&#x153;An unexamined life is not worth living.â&#x20AC;? Have we tried seeing our own faces the moment we take a glance on the face of the dead we are paying heed for? Have we asked and ascertained our own selves about the kind of life we are currently enjoyingâ&#x20AC;&#x201D; the kind of life that will at least mitigate us from uncertainty? Ë&#x2018; 5IF (BUFXBZ PS 'JOBM %FTUJOBUJPO I really wonder why, so many people want to go to heaven but nobody wants to die. Is it because of the forms or kinds of death we have witnessed or the kinds of lifestyle we cannot just leave behind us? The first reason is FEAR, while the second one denotes SELFISHNESS and VANITY. In the Christian perspective, heaven is the state of Eternal Happiness. It is our soulsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; final destinationâ&#x20AC;&#x201D; where we can enjoy the life after this life. In this sense, how can we get into heaven if we are not going to die? If thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s heaven, I want to be there so I can enjoy such eternal happiness. And, if death is the only way to get there, why do I have to be scared of death? (I am referring to our natural death and not the unjust killing, murder, and terrorism). Maybe, we are just afraid of its processes or stages. As the saying goes: â&#x20AC;&#x153;The anticipation of death is painful than the death itself.â&#x20AC;?

Here, there are two prevailing issues: pleasure seeking and avoidance of pain. In fact, we are not afraid of death; we just donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t like to feel the pain!

The Truth of death is inevitable. Human being is mortal; you and I are human beings; therefore, you and I are mortal. However, we have been given ample time to unify our purpose while we are still alive. We must follow a very simple rule or Code of Conduct: Live and let live. So when we die, this death is going to be a peaceful and a beautiful death. A beautiful death depends on how beautiful life is.

I am offering this message to my father, brother, relatives, friends, and co-workers who passed away as they nurtured, cherished, protected, defended, and sanctified their lives through the beautiful kinds of life they embraced and the good examples they have shown during their years here on Earth. May the merit in afterlife be theirs. May they be in union or oneness with the Creator.

Understanding death entitles us to live peacefully and responsibly. Fear not of natural death. Remember, nobody can kill us when we are already dead.

Death is not dreadful; murder is. Never cause someoneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s death out of vengeance. We cannot change the world by killing the criminals. By killing one of them, more vindictive hearts-killers will be born.

Edmonton comes together in wake of attack

September 30th was a sad and scary night for our city. As I am sure was the case with many Edmontonians, when I learned about the cowardly attack against us I was shocked and dismayed to hear that such an event took place here. But we also know that this event does not define us.

Edmonton is and remains a safe and peaceful city. We are proud of our inclusive communities that are made stronger by their diversity and the value it adds. One need only look at a community calendar to see the breadth of Edmonton’s multiculturalism. Every weekend features festivals, celebrations, and significant events from different countries, religions, and ethni cities, providing us the opportunity to experience art, culture, and food from around the world while strengthening our shared community.

Edmonton is also the proud home of the first mosque in North America. It is preserved today in Fort Edmonton Park and provides an opportunity to learn about the important role that the Muslim community has played in the history and growth of our city. The actions of one individual are not representative of that broader community and we must be vocal in our opposition to those who try to tie them together.

Actions like this attack will not change us, will not define us, and will not affect our commitment to creating diverse, inclusive communities where everyone is welcome. We will not let acts of terror dictate the values of our city and we will remain united and resolute‎ in the face of those who wish to divide us.

Over the past few weeks, I have seen the very best of our community as we came together to affirm our belief in those values. Whether at a large rally, a local meeting, or in small gestures of kindness and inclusion, Edmontonians are working together in the wake of this attack to create communities that stand together against all types of hatred.

When the incident occurred, I ‎was at an event nearby celebrating our Edmonton Fire Fighters. It was the kind of event I have the opportunity attend on a regular basis and proudly

celebrate our city and those who serve it.

As we know, that evening turned out to be anything but ordinary. We too often take for granted that while we are focused on our daily lives, there are some brave women and men

who dedicate their careers protecting us. Every day, our first responders put their personal safety aside to bravely serve. Especially now, all of Edmonton is deeply grateful for the swift and professional response of our police and other first responders.

We owe a great debt of gratitude to Constable Mike Chernyk for his swift and selfless actions. By putting himself in harm’s way, he prevented what could have been a much more tragic situation. Constable Chernyk and his colleagues represent the very best of Edmonton and we thank them for their daily defense of our city, its people, and our shared values.

I was pleased to see Constable Chernyk honoured at a recent Oilers game. We are all grateful to know that those injured are recovering well and wish them the best as they continue to heal.

The Girl Who Sees - a video game for learning Philippine culture

I

n a migrants’ world, we see different ways that people employ to connect with their heritage and unearth their identity. Recently, I have come across an ingenious initiative by a Filipino-American based in Washington, Pattie Umali, which uses the medium of video games. Pattie is the creator of The Girl Who Sees (TGWS), which is a “Filipino fantasy game showcasing Filipino history and culture amidst the backdrop of Japanese occupation during World War II”.

As a Filipina-American who loves media and gaming, I have always felt sore about the fact that there is very little representation of Filipinos and Fil-Ams in international media and virtually none in gaming. Given that the Filipino diaspora today is enormous and spread out across the world, I want to help ensure that there are opportunities for young Filipinos around their world to engage with our culture in a fun, interactive way; in hopes that playing a game like this would spark an interest in learning about Filipino history/culture and learning their parents ' native tongue.

Pattie sees TGWS not just as a video game but as a tool for social change. We want this game to serve as a starting point for Filipinos to tell their own stories.

Lolos and Lolas can play with their apos, and hopefully the apos would then ask about their experiences during WWII and/or growing up in the Philippines. Filipina nannies and caretakers the world over could play this game with their charges, giving them the opportunity to share more about their home and background.

Pattie in her journey with this project as game creator and project lead, unwittingly becomes The Girl Who Sees, as well. What started as an erstwhile small and summer project became a quest as she discovered that there are no existing games set in the Philippines or based on Philippine culture, and as she researched deeper into Philippine history and ancient mythology. Also in the team are: Jerald Dorado (game & promotional art), Cherisse Datu (game design; media communications), Nathan Hahn (programming; game design),

Andrew Pendergrast (music), and Brittany Williams (video) - all contributing their time and energy pro bono to build the game demo.

The video game not only features a plot set on Philippine landscape but showcases original music inspired by indigenous music from pre-colonial Philippines.

But a lofty goal and trailblazing project such as this does not come without drawbacks. To be able to fully develop the game, they need $30,000-41,000, which is an extremely lean budget as compared to other games like Angry Birds which cost $140,000, and Nintendo’s Zelda: Breath of the Wild with the amount of $100 million. With the game demo developed, they have now launched a crowd funding campaign this October, in conjunction with Filipino-American History Month.

Furthermore, although it is exciting that The Girl Who Sees may very well be the first internationally released, kid-friendly adventure game on Philippine culture and language, this fact also posts as an obstacle in the sense that familiarity and awareness of Philippine ancient history and lore by both Filipinos and non-Filipinos are wanting, and may therefore not push appreciation for such an initiative.

With 2 months to go in their crowd funding campaign, Pattie hopes to raise enough funds to begin full game development and commercial release of the game in December 2018 for Mac and PC, with a further goal of creating a mobile or tablet spin-off. But on the longterm, it is envisioned that The Girl

Obesity is one of the major concern as it is linked to most of these problems. One way of measuring how healthy your weight is through your B.M.I. (Body mass index) It computes your weight with your height. The normal B.M.I. is 17-25, 26-30 means your overweight and anything above that means you have a serious problem (obesity).

As we get older, our metabolism slows down and you will find it harder and harder to lose weight. The earlier you lose weight, the better. Its not the looks nor the physique which we are after, but its the disease that goes

with obesity. Many of us are not aware, but Alberta Health/P.C.N. provides us free access to dietician advise.

We have in our clinic a dietician that comes once a week and a specialist (Dr Jean Silvano) that specializes in obesity, hypertension and thyroid problems.

Most, if not all, of our ailments comes from what we put inside our body. There is no other way to lessen the incidence of these health problems other than discipline, education and awareness. These generation needs to change for our children to follow. It wont be easy, but it can be done.

As I've always been saying to my patients: Watch out your diet... diet...and more diet....

Who Sees will be the take-off point for the development of further intered games, and especially on other lesser-known cultures to increase their representation in communities.

I’ve always admired people who dream and let their imagination soar, are courageous and steadfast enough to push their plans through, and whose objectives are not just for one’s own benefit, but for a virtuous cause.

And this campaign of Pattie Umali and her team is one worthy cause -

one that aims to increase knowledge of our culture and take pride in it.

Struggles Only Short People Experience While Travelling

s Filipinos we are blessed with being short. Don’t get me wrong, I love my size and I wouldn’t have it any other way! But here are a few things I noticed, that only individuals our size experienced while travelling.

Unreachable overhead compartments First off, the plus side of being short while travelling is that airplane rides are usually a comfortable fit. The downfall is

that the only way you can reach the overhead compartment is by climbing onto the chairs like you’re in a jungle gym. You’ve always envied the luxury of being tall and being able to place a carry-on bag into a compartment at eye level, because for you, it’s like reaching for the top of Everest. More often than not, you just place it under the seat in front of you, almost ruining the QPJOU PG IBWJOH FYUSB MFHSPPN ќ but luckily for you, it barely even affects you.

Getting “lost” in crowds You’ll always hear your name being called out followed by a “Hey! Where are you?” when traveling through densely packed crowds with tall friends. The sad reality of it all is that you’re usually no more than a foot away, and they’ll be turning around in circles wondering where you are, when all they had to do was tilt their head down a few degrees.

Oversized Everything A fun thing to do while travelling to a foreign country is to buy cultural garments or clothing items to wear; as if to blend in with the locals. As you wander around

the local market you spot heaps of potential blouses or dresses, but everything you find is too big or uncomfortably awkward. The sleeves are too long, the torso is gigantic, or the pants you find are dragging behind you like a train.

Unfortunately for you, an adult “small” anywhere you go is never really an adult small. Maybe it’s time to revisit the children’s section.

Friendly giants, aka vision obstructers Whether you’re trying to read train departure times at a train station or attempting to watch your favorite band at a music festival, there is always going to be someone much taller than you obstructing your view.

Just like your friends who “can’t see you” and think they’ve lost you in the crowd, this rather tall individual is as well unaware of your presence. Abundant blessings have been showered upon Mar during his birthday celebration at his parent’s acreage HWY 625 in Leduc County last September 23, 2017. Relatives and friends came over to hug him. His two handsome sons had substantiated his natal day.

2017 Western Canadian Fashion Week

Edge Grabador, the WCFW Asian Liason Officer and Charitable Seat Officer is our Filipino connection to one of the longest running event of its kind in Alberta and second largest in Canada. It's Canada's longest standing fashion week having outlived its counterparts in Toronto & Montreal. Forty designers entries from across the country as far away as the Philippine & Vietnam participated in this long awaited fashion week. This year from September 14-22 , the designers converged at the ATB Arts Barn and showcased a spectacular runaway show. Edge, being a model himself and with his connections with international Filipino designers plans to bring our talents to Canada particularly in Edmonton. His mission and responsibilities to Western Canada Fashion is to contribute to Edmonton community and share his knowledge about fashion industry. He wants to help as Charitable Seat Officer to help homeless kids and less privileged students from high school who can not afford to buy a ticket to watch the fashion week events ' I believe that children is the future of our new generation and by showing them positive events like Western Canada Fashion Week, this will help them to get inspired and get ideas for the future interest in modelling, design and photography someday. ' Children's fashion is also emerging and Alligator Pie Kidswear introduced its fall clothes for kids.

The Angeles sisters Aylah and Aaliyah modelled some of its creations on the runaway.

Edmonton is creating a name in the fashion industry that will eventually compete in Toronto, New York, Milan and other international fashion cities.

Gracious entrance into ladyhood Proud parents Darwin and Rellette Gana will be throwing a Party to their precious daughter Dareanne Kyla as she graciously enters into maturity.
