Wefix Auto finds new home in Southside Edmonton Wefix Auto found a new home in the Southside of Edmonton to serve the growing need for automotive repair and other services.

The new location is at 9944 67 Avenue NW. For weeks, Chris Ayson and his team of mechanics have been very busy preparing their customers’ vehicles for the winter season and have been offering 50 percent off on oil change service.

“It has been very busy and we are grateful to our customers for patronizing Wefix,” said Ayson.

Laarni Lising, who takes care of marketing, and Ayson have been doing their best to attend every social gathering in the city to let people know personally that they have a new location.

While social media is a big help, it makes a big difference to talk to Edmontonians about what services they can expect at Wefix.

Motion recognizing June as Filipino Heritage Month passes Canada’s Parliament

“Right now, it has been a six-day work week for us,” Ayson said.

“We’ve started with a small number of customers and we are just so blessed that the list has been steadily growing, that is why, we always do our best to keep them and for them to help spread the word that Wefix is the auto service company that can help them,” he said.

o better serve Albertans with disabilities, our province proclaimed The Advocate for Persons with Disabilities Act into law in June 2017 and has now named the first Advocate for Persons with Disabilities – our very own Antonio “Tony” Flores who hails from Camalig, Bicol, Philippines and moved to Edmonton when he was 18 years old. This new position reports to the Minister of Community and Social Services and, according to Flores himself, will serve as the voice and active representation for concerns and issues affecting the disabilities communities.

I was so happy for Tony when this announcement was made last week. I remembered when we first met at the

Marsha personally handles the day-to-day operations of Food To Go with the help of family members and staff.

University of Alberta about 35 years ago. Tony was completing a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Political Science and I had just started graduate studies on Comparative Literature. We were contemplating the future, and were cautiously optimistic, but also very realistic. Edmonton was not as diverse then as it is now. 35 years ago, if you were a female Asian or an Asian with a disability, you became very much aware of the additional challenges and difficulties ahead of you. Tony’s disability is an atrophied leg due to contacting polio when he was 3 years old. When he graduated from university, Tony weighed only 96 lbs. and yet, he did not let his disability stop him from shaping his future.

He decided to get stronger and was working out at the university gym when he met wheelchair-bound athletes who got him interested in para-sports. Soon, Tony took up wheelchair racing. This changed his life -- he became more and more serious with para-sports and ended up competing in elite levels and national competitions. In addition to wheelchair racing, Tony competed locally and internationally in paraNordic skiing, and he also became a member of the national team for para-canoeing.

Even as Tony had to devote a lot of time to training, he always found time to do something for others.

Once, when Tony was competing in the Oita Wheelchair Marathon in Japan, he saw some Filipino para-athletes and made a point to meet them. Tony was surprised to see their very calloused hands and continued on page 7 ►

This Book is For You Chapter 7: Love…

Thoughts cross my mind as I ask myself why I still love you. I do not know why I still love a stranger like you. It may be because there is something different about you, something that is different from the others. Remember the day when we bumped into each other while walking in the school corridors?

From the moment I looked at you and the way you said, “Thank you”, my heart melted. It seemed like my world stopped spinning and my heart started beating faster. That glance from your eyes made me realize what love is. Is this really what love means? Does love last?

When relationships are expected to last, will the feelings I have for you right now remain? Is love all about being “open-minded”? Do our minds need to be willing to accept each other’s flaws and strengths?

Is love all about being “valuable”

to the one you care for? Do we need to treasure and cherish each other`s hearts? Or, is love all about being “encouraging”? Where two hearts are excited to be close to each other and be with each other for eternity? Love makes us all change. It certainly changed me.

For me, this is probably for the better. However, can love grant me the courage to tell you how I really feel about you?

Chapter 8: The Swords of Time

The sound of the clock kills me every time I hear it. As the arrows of time move, every second, every minute and every hour, I think about you. “Too much love will kill you”, just like what the band, Queen, said. I do not know if that is right or wrong. But what I know is that I love you…so much. Here I

am again, fighting the swords and arrows of time, but this time, I have a weapon – and that weapon is love.

It is a love that is more powerful than any other. Yes, now, I have the courage to admit to you what I feel for you. I am willing to take the risk. My affections will either be accepted or rejected. This time, I know that I will win the war against the world around us – around you.

Now that I have the courage to tell you how I really feel…I hope this is it. For me to get the prize, and that prize is you.

Chapter 9: Just a Friend

This is it. Flowers have been bought.

Letters have been written. Hair is fixed. Clothes are ironed. Shoes are tied. The guitar is tuned. And most importantly, my heart is ready. My love, now that I have the courage to tell you, I have one more wish – and that is for you to say “yes”. All of that changed when I arrived at your house and beheld the scene with my own eyes. My heart was broken, and my life was ruined.

All the efforts were thrown away when I saw another guy standing there, talking to your parents.

Well-groomed with his car parked outside your house. Walking home in the rain, the flowers have been discarded. The letters have been torn apart. Clothes are wet. Hair is now a mess. As soon as I got home, I went straight to bed and started to cry. Indeed, it seems that time has won this fight.

Pinoy Named as First Advocate... that the wheels in their chairs were made from wood, as they did not have access to the latest technology for wheelchair racing. Tony started collecting used wheelchair equipment and accessories to donate to paraathletes in the Philippines and he also personally donated one of his wheelchairs to Peru.

Despite the demands of training as an athlete on a national level, Tony volunteered in many nonprofit organizations. He was active in the International Wheelchair Foundation based in Calgary that provided equipment as well as training programmes for athletes from Tahanang Walang Hagdan back in the Philippines. More recently, he was a member of the Board of Directors for Alberta Sport Connect, advocating for equal opportunities for para-athletes. He has also served as the Director General for the Whang Youn Dai Achievement Award for eight Paralympic Games.

Tony also took the time to mentor other athletes with disabilities, both locally and internationally – for example, China and the Philippines, to name a few countries.

All through the 35 years I have known Tony, he has impressed me with his zeal and determination not only to improve his lot but at the same time, to help many others as well.

He is consistent in being kind and caring, which is a reflection of the kindness and generosity his parents have shown to me and many others as well. Tony is the eighth of nine children from Tony and Teresita

“Tita” Flores. When she was still alive, Nanay Tita was always welcoming to newcomers in Edmonton. She was very generous with her time and her cooking, feeding poor students like me, and other newcomers who did not have families here. Tony’s dad did not say much but was just as hospitable and helpful. He was principled and upright, and doled out advice one could rely on.

The weekend before the announcement, Tony dropped by our backyard for our last bonfire of the season. True to his generous self, he picked up the tab for the pizza. On a warm October evening with lights from the flames flickering across his face, Tony talked about his dreams for this new position, plans for new programmes, the variety of ways their office could reach out to the community,how he could be the most effective and how to best represent the community he has signed up to empower. He said nothing about how many people would be on his staff, how big his office would be or what entitlements he should get.

I feel that from his parents, Tony has deeply learned solid, oldfashioned Filipino core values like respect, generosity, integrity, and love of family and community and he now incorporates these values into his passion and conviction to be of assistance to people with impairments.

The resilience and discipline he acquired in sports completes the equation for a true tireless and caring advocate.

Alberta is lucky to have Tony Flores as the first Advocate for Persons with Disabilities, and as Filipinos, we can be proud to have an honorable, determined, and credible kababayan to be honoured with this position.

e have lived in Canada for many years and call it our home but as Filipinos, we continue to practice our culture.

One such practice in particular, is “UNDAS”, which we celebrate during the Halloween season. Undas is when we go to the cemetery and visit our departed loved ones.

Alberta is now home to more than 175,000 Filipinos and the number is still growing. It is nice to see that our good friend Mr. Hermo Pagtakhan has taken the initiative to keep the “UNDAS" tradition going in Edmonton, Alberta for many years.

This is an event where you can have the names of your loved ones listed and be included in the prayer offering. Not only do people get to pray for their departed relatives but

they are also treated to a Filipino feast, which includes “lechon".

Congratulations to Mr. Pagtakhan and all the people behind this successful project as well as to all the sponsors. ***** In our last Column, we talked about the Late Tessie Oliva who was the founder of the(FNAA) Filipino Nurses Association of Alberta and her contribution to the History of Nurses in the Province. Dating back to 1930, the first generation of Filipino-Canadians were mainly women who worked as nurses, garment workers, teachers, and in the health sector. Many of them made the enormous sacrifice of leaving their families left behind in Philippines to build a better life for them here in Canada. They hoped one day to be reunited with their families in Canada, but unfortunately that was not always the case.

Our Liberal government recognizes that too many Filipino families were separated for far too long under the previous Conservative government.

That’s why, over the last few years, we’ve made substantial improvements to the Parents and Grandparents Sponsorship Program and we’re on track eliminate the backlog in the Live-in Caregiver Program by the end of this year to reunite families sooner. We also

What are my Academic Documentation Requirements in Applying for APEGA?

I

n the past articles I wrote in the Alberta Filipino Journal, I discussed the experience requirements you need to comply with for you to apply as a Professional Engineer in Alberta through the APEGA. The accuracy of writing about your professional experience and its content will matter in gaining your License.

The experience requirement is only a piece of the entire process that you need in order to comply. The more difficult compliance in the entire process is the Education Requirements.

Most Filipino immigrants in Canada graduated from different colleges and universities in the Philippines where their credentials were evaluated by third party organizations that make recommendations to APEGA on what their education is equivalent to in the Canadian education system.

The APEGA outlined a process on how to submit your academic documentation requirements to the World Education Services (WES).

All applicants will be evaluated against the APEGA syllabus in engineering and geoscience.

Applicants who do not meet academic requirements could be refused, prescribed examinations to make up for perceived deficiencies or be asked to write confirmatory examinations to confirm the quality, depth and breadth of their education.

Basic guidelines were published in the APEGA website in which the courses taken in the Philippines are compared to the acceptable course equivalent and syllabi. The course lists are available at the APEGA website and is available at the University of Alberta and University of Calgary that match APEGA's course equivalents. The syllabi and exams explain what the course and technical exams will cover. Engineering applicants must complete the requirements listed

If you already have a WES application, it must be upgraded to a WES ICAP Course-by-Course evaluation.

Follow the country-specific document requirements and arrange for your documents to be delivered to WES. The roadblock for most Filipino Engineers in continuing this application process is when they get a credential evaluation that states “3-year diploma” wherein the only option left is to take the Technical Exams which entails a lot of preparation and cost. And at the end of the day, it is still your decision whether you are going to pursue your professional status as an Engineer or re-direct your path to become a Technologist. Pursuing your path to becoming a Certified Engineering Technologist (CET) is governed by The Association of Science & Engineering Technology Professionals of Alberta (ASET).

The process and the requirements differ as well. In the next issue of the AFJ, I will cover the requirements for ASET.

by WES. If you already have an evaluation report from WES, you may need to upgrade that report to an International Credential Advantage Package (ICAP).

4. WES will send the completed evaluation report to APEGA digitally.

I AM THAT IAM From a Vantage Point TITO S.VENIDA

Tito S. Venida is a product of the University of the Philippines. He used to be a studentleader during his college days and became one of the founders of the Tau Gamna Phi, one of the world leading Philippine-produced fraternities. His immensurable love for the human race has brought him to the conviction of translating his mission from fraternity into Divinity-from a mere brotherhood into sainthood. Tito authored a book entitled Quocunque Jeceris Stabit, which means, wherever you throw, it will stand.

Ehyeh Asher Ehyeh Exodus 3:13-15

OUR TEXT 13 "And Moses said unto God, Behold, when I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say to me, What is his name? what shall I say unto them?

14 And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.

15 And God said moreover unto Moses, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, The Lord God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, hath sent me unto you: this is my name for ever, and this is my memorial unto all generations."

INTRODUCTION There are times when we hesitate to do God's will because of feelings of inadequacy. Moses felt so inadequate to lead the children of Israel that he offered several excuses to God, but found God to be his adequacy.

A right concept of God is essential to serving the Lord with, power, purpose, and proper perspective.

God not only reminded Moses of His covenant promise to Abraham, but used the name I AM (EHYEH) to teach him about His perfect and provider nature.

In answer to Moses' question in verse 13 of our text, "What is His name?" God clearly states His name to be EHYEH, I AM. The scribes and Pharisees of the New Testament were astounded when Jesus used this name in reference to Himself. In their way of thinking, it was to be used only of God. In fact, it was so revered that they dared not even speak it, substituting another name for God in its place.

But, since Jesus is fully God, He has every right to use this name.

And so He did!

John 8:24-"I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I AM He, ye shall die in your sins."

• The "He" is not in the original Greek text. Jesus stated emphatically that if a person did not believe in His deity (EHYEH), he would die in his sins. A sobering thought.

John 8:28-"When ye have lifted up the Son of man, then shall ye know that I AM He..."

• God became flesh, died for our sins, and desires to be our Savior.

Is it any wonder that Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life" ( John 14:6).

John 8:58-"Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am."

• In this statement Jesus is declaring His preexistence from eternity past.

John 13:19-"Now I tell you before it come, that, when it is come to pass, ye may believe that I am He." • Jesus predicted the betrayal of Judas to give evidence that He shared God's attribute of omniscience that He was all-knowing. The deity of Christ is one of the cardinal doctrines of our faith.

THE PROPOSITION The full revelation of God is Jesus Christ. The I AM of the Old Testament is the Jesus of the New Testament.

Let's look at several aspects of God's nature in order to enhance our sense of God's power, purpose, and perspective.

1. EHYEH (I AM) TEACHES US ABOUT GOD'S SELF-EXISTENCE • We can praise God for His preexistence before time. "In the beginning, God" (Genesis 1:1). God is the Great I AM! It means that from His Word, there is no past, no future, no was nor will be about Him, but only the now since HE IS. No one created God so He is not beholden to anyone else.

• EHYEH is above all, before all, and greater than all. Thank God for His eternality that transcends all of time, people, and events. He is greater than all history, present circumstances or future opposing powers because He always has been the eternally existing God. • There is only one God. God is the only Creator. The Creator must be before His creation can be. Therefore, God was before He created. All that is not God is His creation. ‘All That Is’ is God and His creation. God was before He created. Therefore, there was a condition of ‘All That Is’ when there was only God. Let's teach, preach, and serve a God who has neither beginning nor end.

Ask God to give you more of His eternal perspective, power, and peace today.

RELIGION 2. EHYEH (I AM) TEACHES US ABOUT GOD'S COMPLETENESS • Moses had to learn that whenever he was feeling inadequate, God is totally sufficient, complete, and adequate for all his needs. God completes whatever we are lacking in. May it be courage, wisdom, or ability, He is our great I AM. • EHYEH gives us the authority to do things that are far beyond the ability of human beings because He supernaturally enables us with the Holy Spirit. The Apostle Paul wrote: "Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think any thing as of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of God; who hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life."

2 Corinthians 3:5-6 • Before He created, ‘All That Is’ was God. God is perfect. Disunity is imperfect. Therefore, in God there is no disunity. In God there is perfect unity.

“For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.”

1 Corinthians 14:33 • God in Himself is perfect in UNITY. Perfect unity is a condition in which there are no differences by which to be distinguished.

• It is a condition of perfect oneness in all aspects of being.

• In perfect unity there is no distinction of one from another. In perfect unity there is only ONE. In perfect unity there is no other.

3. EHYEH (I AM) TEACHES US ABOUT GOD'S SUPPLY. • EHYEH is the purveyor of every good and perfect gift. He is the only One who always supplies without adding any sorrow. Moses doubted if he had the wherewithal to teach, lead, and govern the people of Israel, but EHYEH assured him of the availability of total resources.

• As New Testament believers, we count on the promise, "But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory

by Christ Jesus."

Philippians 4:19 • We also find our supply in the promise, "He that spared not his own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things?"

Romans 8:32 • We can be assured that whatever spiritual, material, mental, emotional, financial, relational, academic, or physical need we might have, EHYEH is able to supply it.. Hudson Taylor, the famous founder of the China Inland Mission, wrote, and I quote, "God's will done in God's way will not lack God's support," unquote.

4. EHYEH (I AM) TEACHES US ABOUT GOD'S PROMISES • When God told Moses, "EHYEH hath sent me unto you," He provided a sort of blank check. In other words, whatever need you might have and in whatever circumstance, EHYEH will provide.

• Let's find strength for our weakness, find solutions to our problems, find deliverance from our difficulties, find peace in our stress, find relief from our pains, find victory from our

defeat, find ability for our inabilities.

• God gives us this Great I AM to live in our souls, in the Person of the Holy Spirit so He can fill us with whatever need, at any time and in any situation, if we will trust Him, ask Him, and look to His Word for the solutions to our problems.

5. EHYEH (I AM) TEACHES US ABOUT GOD'S HOLINESS • The Great I AM is perfect, pure, and completely worthy of our worship.

The Apostle Peter wrote, "Be ye holy as I AM holy" (1 Peter 1:15).

• It is not enough to just look to the Lord to meet our needs, but we need to recognize that we please Him the most when we are holy, above reproach, and blameless in all aspects of life.

• We learn more about the HOLINESS of God when we recognize that He is forever holy and not one person, problem or event has caused Him to lose an iota of His Holiness.

• His holiness is the center of His Being as everything emanates from His holy standards of righteousness, truth, and purity.

Let's purge ourselves from an unclean conscience so we may serve Him with purity, holiness, and truth.

6. EHYEH (I AM) TEACHES US ABOUT GOD'S COMFORT • Just as God comforted Moses at a time of desperation, so He comforts us in all our afflictions so that we can comfort anyone who is undergoing distress with the same comfort we receive from God. 2 Corinthians 1:3-4-"Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort.

Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God." • Let's trust the Lord to comfort us when we are in distress. He has sent the Comforter in the Person of the Holy Spirit to be with us always.

• Hannah Smith wrote, and I quote, "I AM implies that we may ask for what is not complete. This apparently unfinished name is the most comforting name the heart of man could devise, because it allows us to add to it without any limitations. Whatever we feel the need of and even exceeding abundantly above all we can ask or think" unquote.

Let's allow the Lord to comfort, buoy our spirits and relieve our minds from stress as we call upon Him to comfort us, deliver us, and relieve us from all our burdens.

Isaiah 26:3-4-"Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.

Trust ye in the Lord for ever: for in the Lord JEHOVAH is everlasting strength."

7. EHYEH (I AM) TEACHES US ABOUT GOD'S CHARACTER • Let's teach God's character to the people around us.

• Once a person understands the characteristics of God then he will become more like the Master.

John 17:3-"And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent."

Application:

NOVEMBER 2018 • Let's ask God for help in reflecting His character in our attitudes and actions.

• By teaching character development we will enhance maturity, depth, and breadth in the lives of the people we seek to influence for the long haul.

• The greatest tool we have to influence people is our example. Our Lord Jesus said, "The disciple is not above his master: but every one that is perfect shall be as his master."

Luke 6:40 We learn more about God by reading and studying His Word, but praising Him for His attributes and the Biblical descriptions about God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.

8. EHYEH (I AM) TEACHES US ABOUT GOD'S PROTECTION • When people know that we are sent from God, then, if they reject or discount our teaching, they have to deal with God. • When we make it clear that we are merely representing EHYEH it becomes clear people are not rejecting us or our teaching but God and His Word.

• Moses needed to know that even if people would laugh, ridicule or criticize him, God would be his Deliverer.

As long as we trust and obey the Lord, we can be assured of God's approval, regardless of people's response.

Illustration: One day, the late Adrian Rogers, the former president of the Southern Baptist Convention, then pastor of Bellevue Baptist in Memphis, Tennessee, felt discouraged that people were not responding to his invitations. He felt distraught that he asked God to give him a verse for encouragement. He opened the Bible and pointed at a verse and it read, "Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that receiveth whomsoever I send receiveth me; and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me."

John 13:20 After that, Adrian Rogers no longer worried about the results from his invitations knowing that people were not rejecting him or his teaching, but God and His Word's invitation.

That took all of the pressure off of him to see success.

CONCLUSION EHYEH ASHER EHYEH, I AM THAT I AM--the self-existent and eternal God is a declaration of the unity and spirituality of the Divine Nature, the exact opposite of all the forms of idolatry, human, animal, and celestial that prevailed everywhere else.

It is, however, not merely a philosophical phrase. The emphasis must be on the active manifestation of the Divine existence.

To the Israelites in bondage, the meaning would be, 'Although He has not yet displayed His power towards you, He will do so.'

The answer, which Moses receives in these words, is thus equivalent to, 'I shall save in the way I shall save.'

It is to assure the Israelites of the fact of deliverance, but does not disclose the manner.

It must suffice the Israelites (and us) that: "EHYEH, I WILL BE (WITH YOU) HATH SENT ME UNTO YOU." AMEN!

hirteen-year-old Anson Chua has been performing as an opening act on several Filipino events, the latest at the Piolo and Inigo Pascual concert, in Edmonton, hoping to hone further his singing skills and develop more confidence along the way.

Anson, son of Elvie and Andy Chua, started performing at the age of 10 and has since been taking voice lessons and loves to play the piano during his breaks.

“Actually, Lydia Jimenez

heard him sing three years ago at the Palabok House, and was encouraged to keep on singing,” said Elvie. Anson first performed at the concert of Alden Richard, an event organized by Palabok Promotions.

Anson also received an invitation from World FM 101.7 Himig Pinoy’s Rolan Latorre to grace the radio program and sing for their listeners.

“Gusto din naming e feature ang mga upcoming singers na Pilipino. Yan din naman ang ginagawa namin for a number of years na din,” said Latorre.

efore I start, allow me first to greet a Happiest Birthday to Fly Friendly Travel and Tours president Resty Reyes, who just turned 53 last November 5.

Even before I met Resty, I was already writing about his Fly Friendly Travel basketball team because of the information provided to me by Edwin Arciaga.

Your Kuya Resty turns out to be one hell of a gentleman, candid and whose friendship I have become fond of. You remind me of dearest friends (some are dead and some are living) back home Resty who have become true friends all these long, long years.

Auto Centre who gladly informed me that their dealer principal Kuya Joe Medina and the dealership are supporting a basketball league

organized by Rey Nodado in Cold Lake.

They just finished their basketball league with a humble start of five teams that included a rag tag squad from Lac La Biche.

Nodado said they are happy to organize a league for the Filipino community which has drawn support from Crosstown Auto Centre, the media in Cold Lake including from Mayor Copeland, who insists not to be addressed as Mayor but just by his first name, Craig.

He added that all Filipinos are busy with work and a basketball league would give them the needed break. Right after the basketball season, they also followed it up with a volleyball league that would give the players’ spouses a chance to

get some needed exercise and fun.

And yes, they have fun every Sunday. It’s not just to play and have fun but to feel the warmth of genuine Filipino hospitality in Cold Lake.

Feels like it’s not really that “cold” in Cold Lake. *** Nodado said while the volleyball games are ongoing, they are excited to resume the basketball league in January next year and then by summer, probably in May, they will have their Summer League.

I know that Crosstown Auto has been supporting Filipino leagues around the province and we would like to thank the dealership for being generous in keeping sports alive in the Filipino community.

We are just lucky that Kuya Joe Medina loves to play basketball and coach Chester, who used to be an assistant of coach Norman Black, is also very much into basketball, forming his teams to represent the dealership in various invitational tournaments, despite his hectic new post as manager.

Davao City - The Department of Education (Deped) and the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) yesterday lauded the start of their collaboration, citing the two-day National Sports Planning Workshop that was set to close here at the Pinnacle Hotel and Suites, Nov.7.

Deped Assistant Secretary Revsee Escobedo, during a press conference, praised the national sports agency for the initiative and efforts to unify the country’s grassroots sports development program.

“This collaboration is a brainchild of our Chairman (William “Butch” Ramirez) and Secretary (Leonor) Briones. We welcome this major step and development in our grassroots program especially for the benefit of our athletes of Deped,” Escobedo said.

He also said that through the partnership, PSC will help Deped develop and train its athletes and coaches. This, he added, will raise the level of standards and capabilities of the athletes and coaches not just

for national competitions but in the international stage as well.

Ramirez thanked Secretary Briones, sharing that the Deped-PSC collaboration was initiated when they talked during the Philippine National Games (PNG) 2018 opening ceremonies in Cebu last summer.

“This is a milestone development, for we believe without Deped there will be no grassroots sports program,” the PSC chief said.

The collaboration with Deped and local government units (LGUs),

The Edmonton Oilers’ Hot Start

t has only been just over a month into the regular season for the Oilers and things are starting to move in the right direction after a shaky start. The Oilers started the season off with two losses against New Jersey and Boston but now have a record of 8 wins, 4 losses, and one overtime loss. The fourth line of Zack Kassian, JujharKhaira, and Kyle Brodziak have developed some chemistry and have been a huge part of the team’s success.

Moreover, Connor McDavid has also gotten himself off to a good start to the season sitting with 21 points through the first 13 games.

hanges to the Cannabis Act (CA) came into force as of October 17, 2018. The Government of Canada has published changes to have a better understanding of these changes which I outlined below: The main change brought about by the CA is to allow adults (over 18 years of age) to legally: • possess up to 30 grams of legal cannabis, dried or equivalent in nondried form in public • share up to 30 grams of legal cannabis with other adults • buy dried or fresh cannabis and cannabis oil from a provinciallylicensed retailer

• in provinces and territories without a regulated retail framework, individuals are able to purchase cannabis online from federally-licensed producers • grow, from licensed seed or seedlings, up to 4 cannabis plants per residence for personal use • make cannabis products, such as food and drinks, at home as long as organic solvents are not used to create concentrated products.[1] The same law (ca) also introduces a category of “illicit” cannabis. Possessing any quantity of “illicit cannabis”, will remain illegal, and punishable as outlined below. For a better understanding and clarity “illicit cannabis” means

cannabis that is or was sold, produced or distributed by a person prohibited from doing so under this Act or any provincial Act or that was imported by a person prohibited from doing so under this Act (cannabis illicite).

Section 8 of the CA creates a new offence that prohibits, among other things the following: • Possession of more than 30g of dried cannabis (or its equivalent in other forms); • Possession of “illicit cannabis” (which includes cannabis not purchased from a licensed distributor).

• The offence under the CA is now strictly ‘hybrid’ (or indictable). Under the CDSA, possession of small amounts was a purely summary offence.

Now the question is how are these changes affecting the immigration status of permanent and temporary residents?

Out of duty to the family, Dr. Leonila Ramos Mateo left a successful dentistry practice in Las Pinas to come to Canada.

“My brother petitioned us,” Dr.Mateo said during the 14th Women’s Heart Engaging Network (WHEN) Ladies’ Night Out, November 2, at the Edmonton Inn. Speaking to more than 100 ladies, Dr. Mateo recalled the struggles of becoming a newcomer in a new country specially adjusting to the winter season.

It was not easy, she said, but she just worked hard and smart and one of the keys to her success is her continued faith Jesus Christ, making the Savior the center of all her endeavors.

Dr.Mateo has continued her dentistry practice in Edmonton. “Dentistry work, I find it very rewarding,” she said.

WHEN Edmonton members have been meeting twice a year, according to Allen Briones, for big gatherings and in small meetings every week to keep in touch with members.

Briones and Evelyn Tejada made the meeting a lively night for everyone as emcees, keeping the momentum all through the night with various activities like raffle draws, gift giving and dances.

WHEN was established in 2008 with the mission to connect women to Jesus and the local church.

DMONTON - Dubbed as “UNDAS 2018” the Edmonton Filipino Community celebrated UNDAS (TODOS LOS SANTOS or ALL SAINTS/ALL-SOULS DAY) last November 1, 2018 at Westlawn Memorial Gardens and Funeral Home and last November 3, 2018 at Evergreen Memorial Gardens and Funeral Home. More than 200 Edmonton Filipino Community members and friends attended at both Locations and witnessed Filipino Priest Rev. Fr. JOSELITO CANTAL preside over the Memorial services.

In Evergreen, Liturgical and Memorial Services were held and the traditional Blessing of the FILIPINO GARDEN (HIMLAYANG FILIPINO), the MEMORIAL BOOK OF THE DEARLY DEPARTED and the “EXPRESSION OF THOUGHTS & LOVE for our Dearly Departed (a novel concept started in 2015).

When interviewed and asked what prompted him to revive the UNDAS Tradition in Edmonton, Event Organizer HERMO T. PAGTAKHAN, Family Services Director with ARBOR MEMORIAL at EVERGREEN, explained: “UNDAS (or TODOS LOS SANTOS or ALL SAINTS DAY) is the Third biggest and most celebrated Philippine national holiday after Christmas and Holy Week/Easter.

Linda was reacting to the bicameral approval of the bill imposing the mandatory SSS for all OFWs. From the Php 4.64 Billion worth of voluntary contributions garnered

by SSS from OFWs in 2016, the amount is set to increase by 3000 % next year 2019. That would translate to Php 144 Billion in the first year of implementation alone.

“The Duterte government will be amassing hundreds of billions from SSS collections at the expense of OFWs who are already burdened by numerous state exactions. Forcing all OFWs to be covered as compulsory SSS members is outrageous since this exaction will be on top of the US$144 mandatory insurance recently enacted under the Duterte regime through POEA,” Migrante International spokesperson Arman Hernando said.

Under the proposed Social Security Act of 2018, the mandatory SSS membership will include both sea-based and land-based migrant workers as the monthly contribution

The bill will necessitate the government’s negotiations of labor agreements with host countries like Canada to compel foreign employers to pay the required monthly contribution for migrant workers. However in the instance that host countries refuse to get foreign employers to comply with this SSS scheme, the workers themselves will be forced to fully pay for the entire monthly contribution rate.

Once the bill gets signed, it will be the largest monetary accumulation imposed by the government on its foreign workers in the history of the Philippines’ labor export program.

Prior to this, there was another state exaction by the Duterte government through POEA Governing Board Resolution No.04. It ordered the inclusion of returning OFWs in its compulsory insurance policy. This

resolution exhibits the government handing over its responsibility of providing protective services for OFWs to the private sector. This mandatory insurance was only from new hires, but now the government is now looking into increasing state income from rehires to further boost the profit of private insurance providers.

By charging each rehire with the insurance cost of US$144, POEAaccredited insurance providers are set to rake at least Php 7.6 billion every year hinging on last year’s deployment figure of almost a million rehires. This whopping amount does not include collections from new hires. In most cases, these additional exactions either end up as salary deductions or as excessive charges by recruitment agencies and many migrant repatriates do not even receive their insurance claims. Instead, their ticket fares are deducted from their salaries.

If POEA claims that there are 6,000 OFWs that leave daily to work abroad, it means that the government earns an average P166.6 million a day, or roughly P59 billion yearly, from processing fees and other costs shouldered by OFWs. These fees do not yet include other fees and tax schemes imposed on OFWs, such as the affidavit of support (AOS), in some countries and the compulsory insurance policy.

Migrant workers face many hardships and issues. And the Philippine Embassies and Consulates are last to assist. One worry is where this money goes if it does not serve migrants. Aside from the official government fees many migrants pay for other expenses like loans, fees of host countries and fees of their consultants and recruiters.

As far as Linda is concerned, she needs to work two jobs during the week and one on weekends. A big portion of her salary goes to paying for the fees, her loans and her immigration consultant. The rest of her salary goes to her daughter back home. She hardly spends for herself.

Like many migrant workers, her dream is to be with her daughter. The Filipino Food Movement Finds its Place in the Mainstream in “ULAM” Toronto, Canada – “ULAM”, a criticallyacclaimed documentary by Filipina director Alexandra Cuerdo on the rise of the Filipino food movement in the United States will have its Toronto premiere screening on November 12, 2018 at the Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema.

The special screening is organized by the Reel Asian Film Festival as part of its 2018 festival programming, Eatable Films and Hot Docs.

In the last few years, Filipino food has been touted as the Next Great American Cuisine, and while Filipino restaurants across the continent have drawn fans of all backgrounds, Filipino food has remained at the margins, perpetually on the verge of breaking into the mainstream – until today.

There has been a recent wave of Filipino restaurants making their marks in the American culinary industry.

“ULAM” features the Filipino chefs

and restaurateurs leading the charge of the exploding Filipino food movement that is finally gaining momentum. Why is it only now that Filipino cuisine is getting the widespread recognition it deserves? “ULAM” asks just that, positing that today’s Filipino gastro-visionaries are here to stay.

“Filipino food is truly having a moment,” remarks Senior Trade Commissioner Maria Roseni Alvero.

“There are so many talented chefs that are able to push the Filipino soul food, an amalgam of eastern (Malay and Chinese) and western (Spanish and American) influence, to new and innovative levels of refinement and

creativity. We are thrilled for this opportunity to not only celebrate the talent of the Filipino American chefs making their mark in the United States, but to also recognize the undeniably

talented Filipino Canadian chefs and food purveyors here in Toronto.”

The special screening of “ULAM”

aims to put a spotlight on Filipino cuisine by allowing movie-goers to experience Filipino food for themselves.

Guests will be treated to cocktails and dinner by LAMESA Filipino Kitchen, served as they watch the documentary, giving them a truly multisensory introduction to Philippine cuisine.

Movie-goers will also have the opportunity to win a round trip ticket from Toronto to Manila via Philippine Airlines, allowing them to experience Filipino food and culture firsthand.

This brings to 73 the total of proclaimed National Artists of the Philippines, the highest national recognition bestowed on Filipinos who have made significant contributions to their artistic field.

Cartoonist and illustrator Larry Alcala is best known for his Slice of Life which depicts the quirks of the Filipinop syche.

He pioneered animation for TV commercials in the late 1950s, and was given the title Dean of Filipino Cartoonists. He is the creator of 500 cartoon characters, 20 comic strips, six movies, two murals, and 15,000 published pages of comic strips.

Amelia Lapeña Bonifacio is the founder of Teatrong Mulat ng Pilipinas, a children’s theatre and puppetry company based in the University of the Philippines (UP). Known as the Grand Dame of Southeast Asian Children’s Theatre, she was also the chairperson of the UP’s Creative Writing Program.

Her literary output covers 20 books, 40 plays, 130 stories, and a number of essays and research on theatre.

Musician, composer and conductor Ryan Cayabyab, aka Mr. C, is probably the most famous composer of the century, having crossed over many disciplines and industries.

His body of works range from theatre musicals,commissioned full-length ballets, an opera, a Mass, popular music, film

scores, TV specials, and orchestral pieces. He has been a recipient of numerous awards, i.e. Philippines’ Ten Outstanding Young Men, 2001 Onassis International Competition in Greece, as well as accolades from the film, television and recording industries.

Architect Francisco Bobby Mañosa is known for his designs using indigenous materials and forms (i.e. bahay kubo, bahay na bato), combined with modern building technology.

Among his iconic designs are: the CoconutPalace; Amanpulo Resort in Palawan; Pearl Farm in Samal Island; Shangri-La Hotel in Mactan, the San Miguel building in Mandaluyong, and the EDSA Shrine. He was among those

proclaimed National Artists in 2009 by President Gloria Arroyo but was rescinded by the Supreme Court due to legalities in the proclamation.

Writer, historian and literary critic Resil Mojares’ writings focus on literary criticism, urban and rural history,and political biography. He is the founder of the Cebuano Studies Center, a library and research center dedicated to Cebuano culture and history. Because of his significant work on Visayan literature, he is touted by peers as Visayan Titan of Letters. He has won numerous National Book Awards by the Manila

curiosity about Filipino food. From the rising popularity of many Filipino restaurants all over the Greater Toronto Area, to the novelty of kamayan feasts, to the excitement surrounding the arrival of Jollibee – there has never been greater awareness of Filipino food and culture in the city. Perhaps, this is the beginning of the phenomenon of the Filipino food movement finally spreading to Canada.

“There is growing interest in Filipino cuisine from not only inside the Filipino community, but in the mainstream. “ULAM” is a testament to that,” says Alvero. “It is about time that Filipino food finally gains the same recognition and becomes enjoyed at the same levels as other internationally embraced Asian cuisine.”

Critics Circle and was honoured with a Gawad Balagtas award from the Unyon ng Manunulat sa Pilipinas (UMPIL).

Ramon Muzones completed his law degree at the Central Philippine University in Iloilo City. He founded Sumakwelan, a group of Hiligaynon writers, and has 62 novels to his name. He was awarded the Gawad Pambansang Alagad ni Balagtas from UMPIL in 1988, and the Cultural Center of the Philippines’ Gawad para sa Sining in 1989. He passed away in 1992 at the age of 79.

Kidlat Tahimik (real name Eric de Guia) is widely regarded as the father of independent Philippine cinema. He earned his MBA from Pennsylvania’s Wharton Business School and worked in Paris for the Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development. It was a chance meeting and a small role in Werner Herzog’s film that started Kidlat’s film career. His first film, Perfumed Nightmare in 1977, won the International Critics Award at the Berlin Film Festival. Since then, he has acquired international and local awards for his films, and has inspired filmmakers to pursue their vision, independent of commercialism.

These are some of the artists who have forged paths in Philippine art and culture and are a source of national pride. The bestowment of the National Artist Award is valuable in that nominations come from peers and as proclaimed by the President of the Philippines, is the highest state honour conferred to artists. May the legacy of all National Artists continue to be recognized and appreciated by Filipinos, in the Philippines and globally,for the present and the succeeding years.

The FANTASTIC COUPLES IN HARMONY CHOIR led the Singing at the Chapel. THE AMAZING KORO FILIPINO and TALENTED EMMA CANONIGO on Sax provided the Entertainment during the Reception.

The Commemoration of all the Faithful Departed (All Souls Day) Matthew 25:31-46 Psalm 90:10 says: “The life span of a man is 70, 80 for those who are strong.”

Today’s occasion is reminding us of the truth about the reality of death. Friends, none of us here are immortal. We are finite and will someday be gone. When? In what way? Where? What time? I don’t know. What is certain is, someday we will face the reality of death. We are only pilgrims on this earth. We are on a journey.

All Soul’s Day reminds us that death takes the body but God takes our soul. Our physical body will disappear but our soul will continue to exist. Life is changed but not ended. Our faith tells us that one day, we will rise again on the resurrection of the dead.

This conviction is very evident in our gospel for today. There is a judgement day. “All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats, and he will put the sheep at his right hand and the goats at the left. Then the king will say to those at his right hand.”

The righteous will be rewarded and

the wicked will be punished.

How to escape the punishment?

Today’s gospel tells us the answer.

“Whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did it for me.” Simply put, to gain the reward of eternal life, we are encouraged to observe the following seven corporal works of mercy: feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothe the naked, shelter the homeless, care for the sick, visit the imprisoned and bury the dead.

Are we not wondering why dead people receive more flowers than living ones? It is because regret is stronger than gratitude.

Friends, life is like ice cream. Enjoy it before it melts. How to enjoy it?

Love people, not things. Do good and be good!

As we remember the souls of our faithful departed, we turn to God and implore His mercy for our beloved dead. Eternal rest grant unto them O Lord, and let Your perpetual light shine upon them.

May they rest in peace. Amen.

Memories of the Philippines I remember strolling through the palengkes as I held my mother’s hand.

We rushed through and past people, my legs and breath tried to catch up as three of my footsteps were equivalent to one of my mother’s.

I remember the yelling and the commotion as people bartered, the vendors barked orders at one another, and people fanned themselves with whatever was available to relieve themselves from the heat.

I remember the flashes of colour - the silver gleam of the fish, the yellows of the bananas and the reds of rambutans.

I remember licking my lips at the sight of fresh peanuts fried and doused in salt. I remember then tugging on my mother’s shirt, pointing at the peanut stand in hopes of going home with a greasy brown paper bag that day.

My days were filled with mango bright yellows, intense oranges, mellow greens, and the searing hot sun which was made up for by the rainy days which cooled us all down.

Memories of Canada I remember my mouth agape in wonder that the sun was still up at 8 PM during the summer, unheard of in the Philippines.

My head tilted sideways as I tried to figure out the new slang— “So a loonie refers… to a dollar?”

I remember the first night my family reunited,all of us asleep on one bed — a tangle of legs and arms.

That bed was the softest place I had ever landed on.

I was made in the Philippines and then moved to Canada, but that is not all there is to be known.

My tag is Filipino-Canadian, but there is more to it than a demographic. Each one that makes up the hundreds of thousands is more than.

• Not quite knowing the right word to use in a statement or story. Similar to Tagalog, there are a dozen ways to express emotions, and some descriptors have subtle differences. There are different degrees that are more appropriate in certain contexts. For example, I can say that both a baby and a puppy look adorable, but it would be a bit weird to use that word when describing a piece of art. On the other hand, depending on the cause, one can say that they may feel attacked, threatened, violated, or annoyed.

• Being flustered in choosing the right prepositions and conjunctions.

I Will Always Be ESL school in the Philippines. The class provided refreshers on components of grammar and how they are misused, and these were the daily exercises we had in school. Prepositional phrases, adverbs and adjectives that don’t look like one, gerunds, missing verbs in a sentence, the list goes on.

Afterwards, she asked me if this would be a good class for my other co-worker to take. She came to Canada a bit more recently than I did, and at a more mature age. During this conversation, my supervisor asked me if I describe myself as “ESL”. This is quite an interesting question and I took a moment to ponder it before responding. I told her yes, yes absolutely. While it is true that I am fairly competent in the language, and that I get compliments for having a ‘minimal accent’ or ‘advanced vocabulary’, communicating in English just takes a bit of extra effort.

Next month, December 18, 2018, the impaired driving penalties will take effect. Most impaired driving offences will then be considered serious crimes in Canada. The maximum penalty for most impaired driving offences will increase from five (5) years to ten (10) years.

Otherwise, the translation would be pointless in my opinion.

Since the Spelling and Grammar Check tool on Microsoft Word was useless in this case, I printed the draft translation, recorded myself reading it, and listened to my own recording afterwards. That’s when I realized something as I read the document and listened to the translation: The ease in my chest while reading very formal and very advanced Filipino vocabulary.

The even pacing of my voice, not even stumbling upon unfamiliar words that I haven’t used for years was in contrast to speaking in English, where I even struggle with pronouncing the word ‘liaison’, or get confused on whether I should use the word ‘preventive’ or ‘preventative.

To give myself a bit of comfort, I re-watched YouTube video by Mikey Bustos called ‘Filipino Accent Tutorial’ for about the hundredth time. Since he grew up in Canada, I found it quite relatable. I’ve lived here for more than ten years, and I can’t help but wonder how I would feel in 20 or 50 years when it comes to fluency, accent, and ease in communicating in English.

Piolo, Inigo send fans to dreamland

T

he Filipino community have several concert organizers but when Palabok House Promotions of Lydia Jimenez brought Piolo Pascual and son Inigo last October 27 in Edmonton, it was a night to remember for a long, long time.

Even right after the concert, the Facebook accounts of Piolo fans are still posting “late uploads” of the Father and Son concert.

Thanks to Lydia for flying in, through Fly Friendly Travel and Tours, arguably the most handsome actor from the Philippines.

Ladies screamed Piolo’s name out loud at the jampacked South Pointe Community Center and some bravely eluded concert security staff to plant a kiss on the actor’s cheek as if she just kissed a god. After that in Edmonton, it was a sleepless night for most of the fans that even Quality Sleep Care, a Filipino co-owned sleep medicine company, probably could not find a cure.

“Masaya lahat ang mga ladies,” said Resty Reyes, president of Fly Friendly Travel and Tours, whose office staff, five of them ladies, made sure they did not miss the concert.

When Piolo started singing “The Gift”, this was the part of the concert that all women wished they had one moment with him.

But the entire three minutes and 47 seconds of that song was entirely dedicated to Lydia, who years ago in the Philippines have dreamed of watching famous actors someday only to make it a reality in Canada after years of hard work of running the successful Palabok House restaurant have afforded her to bring famous Filipino singers and actors to entertain the Filipino community.

It was Piolo’s way of saying many thanks to Lydia and her sponsor friends for bringing him and his crew again to Edmonton. Piolo’s son Inigo, Maris Rasal and Wacky Kiray also performed for the fans of the most successful concert, so far, that was co-presented by Skin Lueur, Fly Friendly Travel and Tours, Palabok House Filipino & Chinese Cuisine and Sun Life Financial-EVT Insurance Services Inc. A group of Team Marnigo (Maris and Inigo) fans also attended the concert, carrying banners and specially-made shirts to show to their idols. “Masaya kami talaga,” said MJ Matandac, president of the fans club.
