The leadership skills of the Philippine Consul General Julius Torres as well as Deputy Consul Erick Aquino, their Staff , and set of Volunteers have been very impressive and equivalently

contagious. Their charisms are notably incredible as they can set people into action without being forced. For instance, the Duterte Volunteers in Alberta, headed by Benjie Lindo, has been very instrumental to the Philippine Consulate’s mission.

They have continuously been

setting up the schedules of the Outreach Projects and their Venues, inviting other volunteers, and disseminating informations.

Not only that, they worked beyond schedules. They were able to extend their services until midnight. Not because

they’re too slow, but for the reason that the quantity of the people to be served is disproportionate to the numbers of those who were serving. And, if they noticed that they couldn’t accomplish all in one sitting; the Team always had the good hearts to offer extensions.

That’s why, on April 29 - 30, 2017 on the same venue, another set of Outreach Project was conducted. Approximately, four hundred people were being served by the Calgary based Philippine Consulate’s Outreach Program.

Corpus Christi Spring Dance Fund Raising a Success The Spring Dance fund raising event held last Saturday May 6, 2017 was successfully attended by the parishioners and friends of Corpus Christi Parish. Deacon Gem Mella headed the committee for this much needed fund raising event.

She says that she is happy but she is not. She sings you a lullaby to sleep, from her angelic voice. She says that she is “okay” and that she has no problems, but why do I see her wailing at one side? She always goes to work for you, even though she is tired, but she will still say that- “I’m okay”. That is why I realized that a mother tells a lie. They will bring you joy and happiness, but they are also the reason of why we are breathing and living a beautiful life.

Are Internationally Educated Engineers are welcome to Canadian Workforce?

The answer is Yes and No.

I

nternationally educated Engineers need to satisfy certain conditions before they practice their profession as engineers elsewhere in Canada.

These conditions include education and experience their earned outside Canada. Unfortunately, these requirements are not that easy to satisfy and this recognition is only the tip of the iceberg for you to eventually join the Canadian workforce.

The economic condition of the province and the culture embodied in the system of employers matter most in the hiring process.

Although, no discrimination on age, nationality, ethnic origin,

religion and color are the main advocacy of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedom, yet it is undeniably happening sometimes in the hiring process.

Network of peers is encouraged to be able to land in your dream job. Connections and referral system is the main ingredient of landing in an interview for your prospect employer. The Beauty of God’s Holiness

W

hat is Beauty? This is a very important question that every believer needs to have a personal answer. For me, a personal delight in God’s Holiness is the evidence of God’s active grace in a believer’s life. How that Holiness connects to Beauty, is one that I need to unveil to you. Let me begin by contrasting God’s natural attributes with His moral attributes.

God’s natural attributes are His grandeur, strength, and power. It is entirely possible to stand amazed by these natural attributes and yet remain unconverted. It is also possible that those who are wholly without grace, should have a clear sight, and a very great and affecting sense of God’s Greatness, His Mighty Power, and Awesome Majesty; for this is what the devils have … yet they are perfectly destitute of any sense of delight of God’s Beauty.

A sight of the Awesome Greatness of God, may overpower men’s strength, and be more than they can endure; but if the Moral Beauty of God be hid, the enmity of the heart will remain in its full strength, no love will be enkindled, all will not be effectual to gain the will … whereas the first glimpse of the Moral and Spiritual Glory of God shining into the heart, produces all these effects, as it were with Omnipotent Power, which nothing can withstand.

Genuine conversion should be marked by something deeper than reverence for God’s Natural Attributes. A believer will actually find what no unbeliever will find—

Heaven is sweet because it is the Holy Jerusalem where the Holiness of Christ is celebrated (Isaiah 63:15; Revelation 4:8, 21:2, 10–11). God’s Word is sweet because the doctrines are holy doctrines. This explains the

Psalmist’s delight (Psalm 19:7-10; 119:140).

The Gospel Is Sweet Because It Is A Holy Gospel.

These themes merge even closer in three Old Testament passages that highlight the Beauty, Splendor, and Attractiveness of God’s Holiness (1 Chronicles 16:29; Psalm 29:2; 96:9): Worship The LORD In The Splendor Of Holiness Divine Holiness is the very definition of Supreme Beauty. And once the heart is given a sweet taste of God’s Moral Perfections, the redeemed heart cannot but be attracted to the Beauty of God’s Holiness. This is what sets the saint apart from all others. Others may also see divine things, but they don’t see their beauty or glory. The unregenerate person may see or know divine things (some don’t ever see divine things at all) but they never see their beauty—which is the Beauty of Holiness.

The Splendor of Holiness is the Glory that the Scripture says is the central thing that makes God and His ways attractive—that lures

humans in love to Him. This is the Light that makes the Person of Jesus so ravishingly beautiful, that has drawn the hearts of millions to Him for the last two millennia. This is the Brightness that all saints see in comparison to which their own hearts appear filthy.

In our visually-driven world, where beauty is measured by a worldly fad or by some subjective visual response, these truths carry enormous consequences.

Holiness Is Beautiful.

Sin cannot be anything other than ugliness. Or consider personal renewal. What we so often mistake as drudgery when we think about battling sin is actually our personal participation in God’s own striking Holiness (1 Peter 1:16).Which is why it’s not surprising that feminine beauty is shaped and defined by God’s Holiness (1 Peter 3:1–6). The implications to this Beauty-Holiness connection are nearly endless.

To quote Jonathan Edwards: "The splendor of God’s holiness is the pinnacle of all beauty. And it is a beauty that should tug at the strings of our affections."

What is ANCOP Walk?

he ANCOP Walk is a global annual event of ANCOP (Answering the Cry of the Poor), a registered non-profit charity in Canada, (Registration #879350312RR0001) that raises funds for its SHELTER, CHILD SPONSORSHIP, and HUMANITARIAN RELIEF programs. It is faith in action!

Individuals and groups participate in the walk, generously giving donations or helping solicit funds for ANCOP. Kids, youth, adults, and seniors join together to walk for the poor and rally the public to support the cause.

In Canada, the ANCOP Walk is conducted simultaneously in various locations around the country. For 2017, all of the walks will be held in the month of August. Seventeen cities and areas are expected to participate: Toronto, Ottawa, Windsor and Hamilton in Ontario; Vancouver and Victoria in British Columbia; Montreal in Quebec; Calgary, Edmonton, Red Deer, Lethbridge and Fort McMurray in Alberta; Saskatoon and Regina in Saskatchewan; Winnipeg and Brandon in Manitoba and Yellowknife in the Northern Territories!

Service-Oriented Professional My name is Payman Parseyan and I am running to be your city Councillor in Ward 9 of Edmonton. Ward 9 is the southwest (From Riverbend and Terwillegar to Windermere and Rutherford). Like many FilipinoCanadians, I was born overseas and immigrated here about 20 years ago.

I knew that I wanted to become a politician at 15 years old and set on this path. I always liked the idea of a moderate politician who considers the big picture and then decides. A doctor will say “eat your vegetables moderately, exercise moderately… everything in moderation.” I tend to practice this into every aspect of my life. I was a former law enforcement officer and currently a self-employed Oil & Gas field-project manager, a National Construction Safety Officer, a Realtor/real estate team owner and a small restaurant owner. I have the diverse professional experience to interact with and engage with a more complete picture of the professional community. While I hold the utmost respect for doctors, engineers, or realtors with 20+ years of experience, the job of a politician is to represent the community as a whole and speak to a broad spectrum of the community. I live in the heart of Terwillegar towne, volunteer with several organizations (multicultural, cultural, political, recreational and a women’s housing) and am a young leader. I speak 3 dissimilar languages: English, Persian and Yugoslavian (learning more) and heavily involved with the Edmonton Heritage Festival. This allows me to personally connect to the community at large, various professions within ward 9, the youth and multicultural societies. I am young, creative and energetic. Moses Billacura was a sports correspondent for national newspapers in the Philippines since 1992 and served as sports editor and columnist for a community paper before moving to Canada in 2010. He is an Edmonton Oilers fan.

Jeff Menzi arrived in Canada when he was six years old and has since got involved in sports.

He is currently a project coordinator for Helix IT, a full service information technology company, and has a normal busy weekend because of basketball activities, that includes coaching the Trinity High School team which started four years ago and playing in the ongoing PSA-Crosstown Auto Centre tournament.

Such a very busy gentleman yet he has found the time to start Athlete Profile in response to some players’ need for basketball training. “I just wanted to help them. Duenas revealed that there is one big company that has not shown interest to support in raising funds for the building fund but to offer handsome prizes to the players too, like tickets to The Masters. Isn’t that amazing if that is confirmed?

The Fiesta in Philippine Culture

F

iesta is a Spanish and Latin word for a festive celebration of a religious holiday. In modern times, it connotes a feast, a holiday or a carnival. The Philippine culture is marked with various fiestas, both pagan and Christian in origin. These fiestas may commemorate a moment in history, the feast of a patron saint, or celebrate a bountiful harvest. The fiestas are so spread out in time and geography that it is virtually impossible to participate or witness them all. In fact, the Manila Broadcasting Company has organized the Aliwan Fiesta, an annual event that gathers the different cultural festivals, as a one-stop showcase not only to the people in Metro Manila, but as an attraction to those abroad.

Before the arrival of the Spanish colonizers, the Filipinos were already engaged in mystical beliefs, worshipping and appeasing gods believed to control their family, livelihood, prosperity, health and their safety.

The Spanish colonizers, especially the friars, used the fiesta in converting the pagan Filipinos into Christianity. The processions, festivities, music and pomp, would lure the “natives” from the remote fields, into the “plaza” or centre of the town. Instead of outlawing the pagan celebrations, the dances and rituals were altered as offerings to the saints.

In these modern times, the fiestas may be used to promote economic, political or tourism objectives. But with every

Filipino, it is a social time, a time for fellowship, and a holiday.

Although most fiestas originated as religious events, it has become secondary to the general spirit of celebration.

Components of Filipino fiestas are banderitas (small flags), endless or continuous eating, processions, parades, dances, entertainment programs, religious or cultural rituals, trade fairs, pageants, games and contests and holy mass. Filipinos are known for their hospitality and there is no better avenue to showcase this than during a fiesta. One can be in a fiesta and partake in meals in several houses in one street!

Much like the fiestas organized by the early Spanish missionaries who were homesick, and flavored the festivities with practices back home, anywhere in the globe where there is a strong Filipino community, some form of fiesta has been celebrated. Go through any social media news feed and you will find Filipino fiestas held in North America, United Arab Emirates, Australia, and Europe. In Edmonton alone, there have been several events on patron saint’s feast days and regional festivals. Because as diverse as the Filipinos are in geography and ethnolinguistics, it is the fiesta that unifies us all. With its atmosphere of revelry and pageantry, the fiesta embodies what we crave for and aim to sustain - the invitation to connect, celebrate, and affirm the Filipino life and culture.

To quote Florentino H. Hornedo in his book Culture and

Community in the Philippine Fiesta and Other Celebrations , the fiesta is rooted in the communitarian and expressive instincts of human nature, is a durable venue for Filipino culture and expressions, and is a symbol of Filipino sense of community as they struggle against modernization, involving individuals in their community.

It serves as a cultural anchor, whereby the fiesta recreates for the Filipino a sense of being home, renewing his identity, and sense of belonging to a home and familial village.

History has shown how the fiestas serve as a tool for varying purposes. The Filipino fiesta in today’s context, especially abroad, is whatever we, as a Filipino, make of it. We shape it based on how we view our Filipino-ness and how we want it to be perceived and celebrated in the society or community we live in. It is a reflection of who we are in that point of time and location.

It an event by the Filipino community, for the Filipino community and secondary to the other people in whatever foreign place the Filipino may be.

Edmonton will be having its own Edmonton Filipino Fiesta on June 9-11, 2017 at the Sir Winston Churchill Square.

I

f you are a Filipino with family in the Philippines and who lives in Edmonton, you have either known of or have heard the name Celso Andrade, one of the city's largest door-to-door cargo delivery.

Before he was Celso of Sunfreight, Mr. Andrade was born in Looc , Romblon Philippines on February 1964 to his proud parents, Atty. Celso F. Andrade Sr. and Leonida Andrade, a District Supervisor.

In Philippines, he completed a Bachelor of Science in Customs Administration & Associate in Marine Engineering in 1986 and subsequently worked for one of the leading freight forwarders in the Philippines.

After working for the industry for 5 years, his experience and skill set acquired him a position at SEALAND SERVICE/APL, one

of the largest containerized shipping companies in the world, to work as Operations Supervisor in Saipan, CNMI .

At the peak of his career, Celso found himself embarking on a different journey. In 1994, Celso immigrated to Canada to join his wife Myrna to start a family. The move was a big change and a culture shock for him. Nonetheless, he found himself shipped across the world where he had to start over amid the start of a downturn economy. Being a workaholic, and expecting a growing family, in order to make ends meet in his new home, he had to work multiple odd jobs here and there such as: custodian and warehouseman, until eventually he got a part time job at one of the hospitals in Edmonton and ended up serving as Vice

President of the hospital's union.

As he got accustomed to his new life, working and living in Canada while at the same time helping his family back home, he observed a missing link within the Edmonton Filipino Community. He noticed the lack in reliable and efficient door-to-door (balikbayan) freight service provider in Edmonton. In 1997, Celso and his partner set up a company and in 2001, what is now Sunfreight Cargo International, building on years of experience and background knowledge working in the international and domestic shipping industry. To their surprise, the company expanded exponentially, and in 2007 they set up an office in downtown Edmonton, where they established a Filipino

convenience store (Sunfreight Cargo/ Sari-Sari Store) simultaneously.

Sunfreight grew from a primary shipping company to a one-stop shop for kababayans where they can buy Filipino products, ship balikbayan boxes and even remitt and send funds to families back home.

In 2011, their business expansion enabled them to set up their first branch outside Edmonton at Red Deer, Alberta, which is currently managed by his sister Celita Eiseman as their partner. Now Sunfreight Cargo International has 32 agents working across the province of Alberta, B.C & Saskatchewan, boasting as the first Better Business Bureau (BBB) accredited company in the province of Alberta with an A+ rating . Moreover, Celso found a solution to accomodate the needs of the growing Filipino community in Edmonton.

Even to this day, Celso and his wife Myrna are actively involved in assisting the Filipino community, most notably during the Typhoon Ondoy & Haiyan crisis by giving discounted rates to all registered Filipino Organizations who wanted

to send relief boxes to the affected areas. Additionally, they volunteer consistently with community outreaches held by the Philippine Consulate to provide services to foreign workers and Filipino residents in Canada and are avid supporters of the Alberta Duterte Volunteer Group.

Still, their success is nothing without the continual love and support of his family, especially his wife Myrna, and his children Josh & Kayla.

Subsequently, Celso and his family give great credit to the continual welcoming support of the Filipino community, his valued customers, friends & partners and most importantly to the Lord who continuously blessed him all these years.

Pinoy Designer stole the Western Canada Fashion Week

he Western Canada Fashion Week held in Edmonton, Alberta Canada.

This week-long exhibition features both local and international emerging designers. This year, for the first time since it started, WCFW invites a Filipino designer, Cherry Samuyo Veric.

Cherry Veric has a repertoire of dressing Philippine icons. However, he started from humble beginnings from Ibajay, Aklan. He obtained a degree in Fine Arts at Far Eastern University and earned capital to start his business from working abroad.

In an interview with Cherry Veric Filipino ."Nagsimula ako since I was a kid. I would play barbie dolls, dinadamitan ko ang barbie dolls ng ate ko. I took fine arts actually, Im an artist before I became a designer. I also joined some competitions, luckily I'm one of the finalists.

Then I realized it's not really my thing. Sinunod ko yong passion ko for fashion."

The night Cherry Veric’s designs were exhibited included 3 other designers from Portugal, Vietnam, and India. But it was clear from the audience reception that Cherry Veric stole the show with a collection of over 26 sets of evening wear.

The collection, which included predominantly high fashion evening gowns embedded with beads. Some of these evening gowns boasted proud Filipino themes in colors of blue, red, and green, resembling the vivacity and verdant of Cherry’s home country.

Cherry Veric explained how he get his inspiration and themes in his collections.

"When you do a collection, you need an inspiration.

Makikita mo naman saan saan sa paligid lang. I took the inspiration from Sto Nino, the Ati-Atihan Festival. Doon lahat nagsimula yong collection ko ngayon. Medyo parang aztec yong print for international pero pag sa local parang ati-atihan."

Among the collection, the dresses worn by the likes of Miss International Kylie Verzosa, Miss Universe Philippine contestant Maxine Medina and, most notably, Miss Universe 2016 Pia Wurtzbach. At the end of the show, Cherry was awarded a token of recognition from the Western Canada Fashion Week handed by the Philippine Honorary Consul of Edmonton, Esmeralda Agbulos.

While Cherry Veric maintains a down to earth profile, his repertoire is filled with designs that have been featured by Philippines most recognized faces. His creativity and talent for design has imprinted an international mark that has made every Filipino proud to have him as their own.

Fashion Week is not just about the designers. It made history when, it held the very first fashion show featuring 13 models with disabilities.

These models were either amputee models and models in wheelchairs or using walkers.

Mia Mulingtapang Manager of Alberta Medical Supplies explained..."We came up with the idea that we would have to raise awareness for people with disabilities and this would be first time in Canada. This has happened in New York Fashion Week but this is the first time happening here and only here in Edmonton that first time that people with disabilities will grace the runway for tonight."

HABITUAL EXCUSES Habitual Excuse is a kind of mental illness that kills creativity and success. A person having this has contributed a lot to hinder personal and societal progress.

People filled with excuses do always have the reasons not to show up to a prior commitments or scheduled appointments.

Sila yong madaling lapitan at mahusay mangako; subalit mahirap hanapin (Easy to approach and good at promising; but hard to find). If you ignored going about your business the same way every day, your routine is widely opening you up to

mistakes. Why? Simply because, chances are, your habits will be causing you to lose ability to think, reflect, and scrutinize your strategies, work styles, methods, and approaches.

You will notice that the more successful the individual is, the less inclined he makes excuses.

But the person who has gone nowhere and has no plans for achieving something and getting anywhere has a bunch of reasons to explain why he hasn’t, why he doesn’t, why he can’t, and why he isn’t. Take note, all the habitual excuses

made by the mediocre people could be but are not practised by the successful ones.

They are good at scapegoating for each failure.

Here are some habitual excuses that we frequently hear as alibi: “lack of education, too old, poor health (e.g., I am not feeing well), too young, wife or husband, family orientation, and bad luck. Whenever victimized by this habit of excusing from commitments, taking the plan of action for granted, just to have the “best excuse” then, one sticks with it. The tendency is to rely on the excuses to explain to himself and to others why he is not progressing.

In life, we are all confronted with all bodily changes and activities. That is the reason why I mentioned in my previous editorials that a Calendar is useless, unless it is filled with Activities.

Calendar of Activities should always be checked so we can be reminded by our appointments.

Time must be managed as it is the measurement of motion.

Time and Motion are inseparable entity in order for us to succeed.

Management of Time and Delegation of Responsibility cannot also be dichotomized if we want to come up with a good result. For a person who is stricken with the Habitually or Acquired Excuse Disease, these calendar of activities will only turn into ashes.

Discipline is the cure for this.

If you cannot do that to yourself, seek for your counsellor’s pieces of advice. But the primordial requirement of course is to admit your weaknesses. That, you’re at fault. Accept the cause and effect relationship. Take a second glance at what appears to be someone’s “triumphs.”

You will surely discover not luck but the preparation, planning, evaluating, and successproducing mentality preceded his good fortune. Again, take a second glance to what shows up to be someone’s “failure.” Look

back; he learns and succeeds.

But when a mediocre loses, he is a failure. You can also avoid being a wishful thinker (mapag-bakasakali o bahala na syndrome) Never waste your time and mental muscles aspiring of a effortless way to achieve success. You do not become successful simply through luck (Lotto Mania).

Success comes from the fruit of your labour. Never count luck for promotions and victories in life. The delivery of good stuff in life doesn’t depend upon luck.

But rather, by concentrating and developing the good qualities in your self that will make you prosper.

Soren Kierkegaard once said: “It is better to be a participator, rather than spectator.”

Be reminded of your commitments and appointments.

Double-check your calendars to set you in motion. Get involved! No more excuses!

Reflections on International Workers Day

s we enter the month of May, its also the International Workers Month. On May 1st people marched on the streets of Edmonton celebrating the day also known as “Mayday”.

Reflecting on the conditions of workers, I’m sharing with you the statement of Migrante Alberta on this day.

------------On May 1st the whole world celebrate the International Workers Day except in Canada and USA. Its celebrated on the first Monday of September in North America. Also knows as “May Day”, it is always a day of resistance and celebration for all workers around the world. It is a day of resistance against oppressive labour laws and unfair workplace practices. It is a day of resistance where the masses of the working people march and shout in unity to denounce the abuses and attacks against them by the forces of global capital.

On this year’s may day, workers continue to face hardships in the province. From the workers in the oil patch that were extremely affected by the economic downturn and the drop in the oil industry to the migrants that provide services to the same industry were all victims of this capitalist economy, driven by its neo-liberal agenda. After a couple of years, the elected provincial government have not pushed through its promises of better working conditions to all workers, to both local Canadian workers and migrant workers.

Often voices of temporary workers are not heard. Workers in Alberta continue to fight for better wages, better working conditions, for the right to unionize.

worker program. Under the guise of immigration reform and being different from the former conservative government, they have made no major changes to the TFWP but rather reverting it back to where it was. Immigration at the moment is essentially a lottery system. It makes workers compete among each other and opening back doors to those who can afford to come.

The deportations of temporary foreign workers who have reached their fouryear limit is ongoing, hundreds became undocumented workers in the last 2 years and chose to stay underground – in other parts of Canada hard-working migrants are being rounded up as common criminals by immigration and border authorities. These deportations will not stop employers from abusing the Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP), but the government continues the tradition of the Conservatives of deceiving the Canadian public into believing that it is doing this to protect Canadians.

The reality is that local Canadian workers in Alberta, in Canada and in other parts of the world are increasingly finding themselves in precarious work.

Jobs that are insecure, parttime and contractual are rising in numbers everywhere. The

exploitative labour practices of transnational and multinational corporations in their neverending quest to maximize their profits are becoming the norm for all types of employers.

Temporary foreign workers (TFWs) are the ultimate precarious work force. They have no or few prospects of protection and for becoming permanent resident. They endure low wages and difficult working conditions.

Worse of all, their temporary status bars them from fighting for their rights or to join unions who can help them to do so. This works for employers who want to cut their labour costs. It is the Employers that are taking away jobs from Canadians, not TFWs. While he (Trudeau) continue his rhetoric of peace and opening its borders to over 25k Syrian refugees, Canada continues to be a major actor in the global war theatre, committed to selling over $15 billion of weapons globally. Canada continues to subsidize war that displace people and create millions of refugees.

This federal government have no intention of getting rid of the TFW program, or its current abusive immigration policies, but brothers and sisters they are only replacing it with new exploitative immigration programs. Let us be reminded that Cheap labour is

needed by countries like Canada to push their neo-liberal agenda by putting super-profit over the interest its people. Privatization, liberalization and importing migrants through guest-worker programs are tools to facilitate this neo-liberal agenda. And migrant workers are the cheapest and most disposable labour.

It is time for all workers to join in solidarity to call on governments to uphold the rights of all workers for decent jobs, good working conditions and job security, wherever they may be.

Together, we must not let the employers and conservative elements of the government and our community create differences between migrant and Canadian workers and pit one group against another. We need to push for a pro-worker immigration policy and labour protections, at the same time we need to organize around the broadest possible worker solidarity.

Long live international solidarity ! Long live international workers day!

To show the government's commitment to family reunification, it just published new regulatory changes increasing the maximum age of a dependent child which will allow more families to stay together.

The new age limit of under 22 will come into force in October 24, 2017, increasing it from the current under 19 requirement. The new age limit will apply to new applications for all immigration programs under Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada, including that of refugees. However, dependent children who are above 22 years old or older and who rely on their parents due to a physical or mental health condition will continue to be considered dependent children.

According to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) increasing the age limit will have more positive social and cultural impacts by keeping families together.

Such move will help enhance

Family reunification

has been a priority of the Government of Canada.

Recently several changes have been made to uphold this commitment.

An important change under the Family Sponsorship Category was the elimination of the two year conditional permanent residence measure in recognition that most marriages are genuine and to reduce the vulnerability of sponsored spouses. Processing time of sponsorship applications submitted after December 7, 2016 would be reduced to 12 months. IRCC has also increased from 5,000 to 10,000 applications under the Parent and Grandparent sponsorship applications starting this year.

IRCC has made changes to Express Entry, the system used to manage applications for key economic immigration programs.

Starting June 6, 2017, candidates with strong French language skills will be awarded additional points.

Points will also be awarded to candidates with siblings in Canada and candidates will now be allowed to voluntarily register with the Job Bank of Canada.

PAALALA MULA SA KONSULADO Nagpapasalamat po ang Konsulado sa mga Pilipino sa Alberta at Saskatchewan sa patuloy na suporta sa ating mga gawain at adhikain, at nais naming ipaalala sa lahat ang mga sumusunod: 1. Tumatanggap ang Konsulado ng aplikante para sa consular services (passporting, SPA, notarials, civil registrations) mula 9:00AM hanggang 4:00PM, Lunes hanggang Biyernes.

2. Hindi po tumatanggap ang Konsulado ng mga walk-in passport applicants mula sa Calgary tuwing una at huling araw ng linggo; mga walk-in passport applicants mula sa mga lugar sa labas ng Calgary lamang ang tatanggapin sa mga araw na iyon. Ang mga walk-in passport applicants mula sa Calgary ay maaaring mag-set ng appointment para sa passport renewal para sa ibang araw.

3. Hinihiling po ng Konsulado sa mga aplikanteng pupunta na iwasang magdala ng mga kasama na hindi nangangailangan ng serbisyo mula sa Konsulado upang maiwasan ang lubhang dami ng tao at labis na ingay na nagiging sanhi ng mga reklamo ng iba'ng mga opisina sa gusali.

5. Sarado po ang Konsulado tuwing holidays sa Pilipinas at Canada. Maaaring makita ang listahan ng mga araw na walang pasok sa website ng Konsulado - www.calgarypcg.org. May mga announcement ring nakapaskil sa Konsulado tuwing may nalalapit na piyesta opisyal.

Humihiling rin po ang Konsulado ng paumanhin sa lahat ng mga panahong hindi nasasagot ang kanilang mga tawag sa telepono o mga email. Aanim lang po ang tauhan ng Konsulado, at dahil po sa dami ng mga aplikante, minsan ay hindi po nabibigyan ng kaukulang pansin ang mga tumatawag at nag-e-email. Humingi na po ang Konsulado mula sa Maynila ng karagdagang tauhan upang makapagbigay ng higit na mabilis at mainam na serbisyo sa lahat.

The new Alberta government initiative, believed to be the first of its kind in Canada will be closely monitored by the federal government to see if it can be implemented federally or in other provinces, according to Federal Employment , Workforce Development and Labour Minister Patty Hajdu in an interview.

"The focus of the federal government with the temporary foreign worker program is always to make sure Canadians have the first crack at available jobs, and then after that is done, then to look at supporting employers

with prolonged labour shortages in very specific areas".

The 29 skilled occupations were chosen because there is a sufficient pool of unemployed workers with those skills in Alberta.

Alberta Labour Minister Christina Gray said the program will evaluated every quarter and future adjustments could be made to the job categories covered by the initiative.

Reasons I’m Grateful for Living in Canada

Oh, you just accidentally ran your shoulder into mine? “I’m sorry for being in the way.” Next time you’re around a Canadian, just count how many times they say the word “sorry” or apologize for small silly things – you’ll find it entertainingly ridiculous.

very time I leave Canada and travel to another country, I’m always reminded of how kind Canadians truly are, and more importantly, how fortunate I am to live in such a unique and welcoming country. Here are five things I

am grateful for living in Canada.

A Traffic Jam of Kindness Canadians are the type of people to unintentionally cause a traffic jam at the door. We’ll both go for the handle, and then say sorry for almost butting hands.

After apologizing for about a minute, we’ll say, “no after you,” for about the next two minutes.

After these small moments of deciding who to let ahead, we’ll probably apologize once more before either proceeds. While all of this happening, everyone

We definitely got that! If you ever get bored of the topography of where you are, chances are there’ll be something entirely different just a few hours drive in any direction.

Tim Hortons The words “Can I get a large double double” will make sense to a Canadian who avidly drinks Tim’s. No, it doesn’t mean double cupped or double your order, it simply means a coffee with two creams and two sugars. It’s a nice feeling knowing that only Canadians use such lingo with a restaurant chain that is directly associated with their country. The first thing many Canadians may do after being away for so long may be

to get a box of Timbits with an ice cap or double-double or single-single on the side. Maybe only a Canadian will understand how that in itself is the perfect welcome home.

The Seasons Sometimes we Canadians dream about what it may be like to have summer all year– nothing but sunshine, beach time and sunburns. But when I think about it, I am actually quite grateful for also having fall, winter and spring; it makes every part of the year so different. Different seasons only mean a much wider variety of entertainment and activities.

Sun burns in the summer and frost bites in the winter. I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Melting Pot But, what I’m most grateful for is how we don’t have one specific homogeneous culture.

We’re so diverse. There’s something special about having numerous cultures all within a close radius.“Oh, I don’t feel like having sushi tonight?” That’s not a problem! If you continue to go down a block or two, you may just find Middle Eastern or Indian Cuisine, or maybe even just your classic North American restaurant. We embrace all the cultures that come into our country and we aren’t afraid to show it off.

The Filipino Senior Citizens Association in Edmonton organized the "Pabasa", Passion of Christ, on April 13 at the Korean Hall. Organizers led by Abel Cereno, Joyce Dizon, Mario Estrada, Rose Lampa, Tito Lopez, Lucy Manuntag, Bernie Pagsisihan, Rudy Valencia and Johnny Yu helped in setting up the two-day Filipino Lenten Tradition for the Filipinos in Edmonton which was also attended by Journal editor Lito Velasco.

In celebration of the Centennial Anniversary of the Apparition of the Virgin Mary - Our Lady of Fatima refers to the appearances of the Virgin Mary in Fatima, Portugal between May 13, 1917 and October 13, 1917.

Katrina Cereno is a junior high student. She spent her efforts in writing and interested to drawings and photography. She's looking forward to be a future architect. She lives in Edmonton, Alberta with her family.

The Virgin Mary appeared to three peasant children: Lucia Santos, Jacinta, and Francisco Marto. During her visits, she delivered secret messages to the children, to be revealed at later dates. These became known as the "Three Secrets of Fatima.

"The secrets are exceptional because they contained predictions that have come true.

Our Lady's first secret was a vision of hell. Her second secret predicted the end of World War I and the arrival and spread of Communism. It also predicted the end of Communism and the victory of the Church, which we have observed in Russia. A sign was promised in the heavens, which occurred on January 25, 1938, with the appearance of the aurora borealis.

The Third Secret has been the subject of great speculation because it was not revealed until June 26, 2000. Church officials widely believe the Third Secret predicted the assassination of Pope John Paul II, although this conclusion remains controversial to some.

The appearance of Our Lady of Fatima, and the following miracles, were unique because they were widely recorded and documented. The most famous miracle was the Miracle of the Sun, which was seen by no less than 30,000 people, including newspaper reporters and photographers. Some estimates place the number of witnesses as high as 100,000.

In the miracle, the sun was said to dance in the sky, change colors, and rotate like a wheel. It did not harm the eyes of those who saw it and the phenomenon was reported simultaneously by observers from as far as nearly 25 miles away.

Following the appearance of Our Lady of Fatima, an estimated two million pilgrims flocked to the site for the next two years and built a chapel there, despite government opposition.

Of the three children who saw the Virgin Mary, only Sister Lucia survived childhood. Francisco and Jacinta died in 1919 and 1920, respectively. Sister Lucia entered a convent, lived quietly, and rarely spoke of the event; though she composed her memoirs in the 1930s and 40s, which have since been widely published.Our Lady called for the conversion of hearts as part of her apparition. Several prayers have been derived from her message, including the now famous "Fatima Prayer," said at the end of each decade of the Rosary."O my Jesus, pardon us, save us from the fires of hell.
